Abstract:This review provides an overview of the biosynthesis of bacterial cellulose (BC) produced by Komagataeibacter xylinus and its applications. We first discuss the current classification criteria of the species and its physiological aspects, emphasizing the factors related to acetic acid resistance and the proteins involved in the response to stress in the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA), along with their regulatory mechanisms. The main pathways involved in BC biosynthesis, including the cellulose synthase enzyme complex ( bcs ) and its core and accessory genes, are also discussed. The importance of culture medium, substrates, and strain parameters for bioprocesses and BC applications are presented. Lastly, we highlight current and potential applications of BC, focusing on food, pharmaceutical, textile, electronic, cosmetic, and biomedical fields. Notably, the application of BC as "green composites" is highlighted as a promising area of research.
