Abstract:Dialect classification and drawing boundaries between dialects is a subject of great interest and concern among scholars.In most situations,a single criterion is sufficient and workable.But the dialect situation is quite complex in the transition zone between Jiang-Huai(江淮)Mandarin and Wu(吴) Dialects in Jiangsu(江苏).Any single criterion is only partially reflective of the boundary in this region. In order to more accurately and clearly reflect the complex nature of the transitional region and the true character of the dialects there,we draw a representative isogloss using one important criterion highlights a basic distinction between the two dialect types.At the same time we additionally use a set of other criteria to delineate other isoglosses and isogloss bundles.In the process we investigate overlap and competition between Jiang-Huai(江淮)Mandarin and Wu(吴)Dialects and analyze their historical layers.

Abstract:Investigating lexical features with statistical methods has always been a key object of quantitative linguistic research. However, though Zhuang is the mother tongue of the minority with the largest population in China, its lexical features have attracted little attention from the researchers employing quantitative means. Based on a corpus (CZL) of over 500,000 tokens of the Zhuang language, this study addresses the features of word frequency distribution of Zhuang. The results show that Zhuang shares the universal feature of other tested languages in that its word frequency distribution abides by the Zipf's Law and the "Least Effort Principle". The study also tests the word frequency distribution of Zhuang texts of different genres, which shows that for different genres, the values of some parameters, such as b, are different. Moreover, in order to test whether Zhuang language has any distinctive or typological features in word frequency distribution, the values of the h-point and a-index of the texts in CZL are computed as well. It is found that the two indexes are effective in distinguishing Zhuang from other languages, and the position of Zhuang on the analytism-synthetism continuum proposed by Popescu is close to those of the Polynesian language family, which may be helpful for intersubjective placement of Zhuang into a language group. This study would open a new perspective in the statistical lexical research of Zhuang language and present a "new" corroborated language with respect to the laws in quantitative linguistics.

Abstract:Pinghua was regarded as an independent group in Languages Atlas of China. There are skepticism and hesitation in the acadmic circles. The current pronunciations of medieval Fully Voiced Initials are the main criterion for classification of Chinese dialects. According to this criterion, Goulou Cantonese should belong to Pinghua Group, and Jin Group should belong to Mandarin. Hui Group is a separated hybrid dialectal group. Gan Group and Hakka Group were devided into two groups according to cultural identity. Modern Chinese dialects consist of nine groups: Mandarin, Wu, Xiang, Min, Yue, Pinghua, Gan, Hakka, Hui.

Abstract:Historically-speaking, centuries of interactions between Han Chinese newcomers from the north of China and indigenous Tai-speaking ethnic minorities in the south have left deep, indelible traces in the language and culture of the latter and raise questions of identity and language policy in modern times. The language and culture in this study is Zhuang, one of many Tai languages and the largest minority language in China today. Using kinship terms as an example, we employ the analytical tools of Geographic Information System (GIS) to map and analyze the spatial pattern of sinification of kinship terms and attempt to explain the process of cultural and linguistic interaction that may have led to such distribution in the Zhuang domain. We use published data on Zhuang kinship terms from thiry-four representative locations in Guangxi and border areas (four in eastern Yunnan and one in western Guangdong) and semi-quantify them according to their pronunciations: three for Han-like pronunciations, one for more clearly Zhuang, and two for linguistic forms in between. The spatial pattern of kinship term sinification scores based on interpolation of the sampling locations shows that high degrees of sinification are located in areas close to the coast or international border with Vietnam, with gentle land slope and close proximity to major transportation hubs, reflecting the importance of both physical features and economic development in those areas in facilitating interactions between the two cultures in the sinification process. The degree of sinification of kinship terms also varies with their positions in a family kinship tree, perhaps reflecting Han social customs and male dominance in society more than traditional Tai kinship systems, which are generally more bilateral in nature.

Abstract:Multi-dimensional Analysis (MD) is a quantitative corpus-based approach which describes and interprets patterns of register variations through factor analysis of a set of linguistic fea-tures across text varieties, and reveals their systematic relationships with communicative purposes. The model has been employed to explore language variation in many languages (e.g., English, Somali, Nukulaelae Tuvaluan, Korean, and Spanish), yet insufficient research has been carried out on register variation in Mandarin Chinese on a full scale. In this research, 88 linguistic features are tagged in a balanced corpus composed of 20 Mandarin Chinese spoken and written registers. Through factor analysis, five dimensions which consist of 65 linguistic features are identified and interpreted from linguistic and functional perspectives. The first two dimensions, interactive vs. informational discourse and narrative vs. non-narrative concern, are similar to dimensions that have been claimed to constitute universal parameters of register variation in previous MD studies. The exist-ence of two potential universal dimensions suggests that the basic communicative purposes and functions underlying the different languages are markedly similar, given the existing social, cultural, and linguistic dissimilarities. Dimension 4, casual real-time speech with stance, is identified as a distinctive dimension in Mandarin Chinese. Dimension 3, explicit-ness in cohesion and reasoning, and Dimension 5, abstract information, are found to be as-sociated with foreign influence, and their register variation patterns illustrate how foreign contact affects Chinese register variation in a quantitative manner.

Abstract:The areas sharing the same sound change are usually in accordance with historical administrational regions as a result of the impact of the dominant culture. In this paper, with examples such as the modern reflexes of division 2, division 3 and 4 of Middle Chinese Jianmu Kaikou initials, and modern reflexes of Middle Chinese Bingmu initials in level-tone syllables as shown in GIS, the author identifies two critical periods in forming Chinese southeastern dialects: Weijin as the formation period of colloquial readings of Chinese dialects, and Tang, Wudai, Song, and Yuan as the formation period of literary readings of Chinese dialects.

Abstract:Chinese features prominently in the Chinese communities located in the nations of Malay Archipelago. In these countries, Chinese has undergone the process of adjustment to the local languages and cultures, which leads to the occurrence of a Chinese variant in each country. In this paper, we conducted a quantitative analysis on Chinese news texts collected from five Malay Archipelago nations, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Brunei, trying to figure out their differences with the texts written in modern standard Chinese from a lexical and syntactic perspective. The statistical results show that the Chinese variants used in these five nations are quite different, diverging from their modern Chinese mainland counterpart. Meanwhile, we managed to extract and classify several featured Chinese words used in each nation. All these discrepancies reflect how Chinese evolves overseas, and demonstrate the profound impact rom local societies and cultures on the development of Chinese.

Abstract:Late Cenozoic strata are well exposed and have clear stratigraphic sequence in Yangyuan basin. They are well-known for rich fossils and ancient human relics. In recent years, different research methods were applied and the accuracy of the stratigraphic study has been improved steadily. Nevertheless, opinions remain different or even confused in stratigraphic division and names of stratigraphic units. Based on previous researches according to such projects as 1:50000 Regional Geological Survey for Huashaoying and Beishuiquan Sheets and the Study of Nihewan Stratigraphic Sequence and Restudy of the Standard Stratigraphic Unit of Late Pleistocene Xujiayao Unit in North China, the authors made a new division for the Late Pliocene laterite, Xujiayao Formation and Nihewan Formation in Yangyuan basin, with the emphasis placed on the characteristics of Pliocene laterite and Xujiayao Formation as well as the contact relationship between Xujiayao Formation and Nihewan Formation.Through analyzing lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, magnetostratigrphy and paleoenvironment, it is considered that Pliocene laterite should belong to a series of multi-genetic laterite formations, and hence it is unreasonable to repeat the formation building in Yangyuan basin. Based on profile survey of Quaternary geological structure identified by volcanic ash and fossils found in Xujiayao Formation, it is also thought that Xujiayao fauna belongs to Late Pleistocene, and the rock sequence below palaeontologic and ancient creature relics should belong to middle Pleistocene. The achievements made by the authors provide new evidence for studying the characteristics and attributes of the standard Late Cenozoic stratigraphic unit in Nihewan basin.

Abstract:Yue Dialect in Lianzhou city,which links with the subdialect Goulou(勾漏) in Western Guangdong and Eastern Guangxi as a whole,is called Sihui Shengby the natives.Owing to this,this paper demonstrates that the most distinguishing feature of Sihui Sheng is that the present pronounciation of ancient jing,zhuang,zhi,zhang initial groups can be divided into three types,taking the accent of Shizheng unincorporated village in ShiMa village for example,which belonged to Qingshui town but now belongs to Xi'an town.The type of level 3 of zhi group pronounced colloquially as duan group,which is rarely seen in Yue dialect while performs parallelly in some other dialects,reflects an ancient historical stratum of initials system in this kind of dialects.

Abstract:Owning to the special location of Shanghai, almost every large population migration throughout the history of China left traces in Shanghai. We collected data of Shanghai from 13 populations which have obvious differences in terms of dialects. The cluster analysis on the data showed that the populations to the east of Huangpu River are relatively pure while the populations to the west of Huangpu River are relatively mingled. Both the populations can be further clustered to a third one. This suggests that the populations in Shanghai suburb may have 3 sources. (Most of the inhabitants of Jinhui town in west Fengxian County and the Maqiao town of Minhang area are natives of South China. The inhabitants of Chongming County, Jiading area Pudong area and Nanhui County are the immigrants from North China, those of Touqiao town in Fengxian County, Jinshan area,Zhujiajiao and Shangta of Qingpu area, Tianmashan of Songjiang area are the immigrates from the west.) These conclusions are generally consistent to the historical record, except for some minor deviations.

Abstract:Principle component analysis on physical and surnames divides Shanghai suburbanites from 13 townships of 9 counties into 3 clusters. Conferring the result of other research fields, the 3 clusters shall be Yue(Daic), Wu and historical immigrants from North China. The variance percentages of the components show that the primary difference in Shanghai suburbanites is between Northern Immigrants and Southern Natives. Secondary difference is between two kinds of Southern Natives, Wu and Yue, then Yue is divided into two parts with different origins. Marking the components into the contour on the Shanghai map, the historical immigration events are shown in different maps. Geographic analysis on surname components also tells that the diffusion features and patterns of Southern surnames and Northern surnames are entirely different. 

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents data from a quantitative survey based on 746 written questionnaires and 23 semi-structured interviews. The main purpose of the study was to measure Southern Min and Mandarin lower domain language use among a cross-section of Taiwan’s multilingual population. As organizing elements for our discussion of Taiwan’s current language situation, we made use of Sridhar’s notion of societal multilingualism as well as Ó Riagáin’s idea that the home is possibly the first domain to exhibit language shift. This study followed Ó Riagáin by focusing our research on lower domain language use as well as relevant political determinants. We investigated whether Southern Min speakers tend to prefer a Taiwanese rather than Chinese identity, and whether the Taiwanese link their language choice to age, gender, and region of origin. Political improvements in Taiwan for the past two decades did enable the Taiwanese to compete with the Mainlanders who moved to Taiwan and they now have a stronger case to promote the status of Southern Min and maintain it. Evidence of language shift was discovered: proficiency in Mandarin by the Taiwanese is increasing, while that in Southern Min is decreasing. It is predicted that this language shift will continue, but that the attitudes held by Taiwanese toward their ethnic identity might slow down such a process considerably.

Abstract:The four counties on the south bank of the Yuanjiang River are the gathering places of the Hani, Yi, Dai, Miao, Yao, Zhuang and Han nationalities.In this paper, based on the GIS technology and field investigation, the spatial characteristics of multi-ethnic settlements are discussed in multi-scales, taking natural villages, administrative villages and typical cases as research objects. The main conclusions are: the multi-national settlement has three characteristics at the macro level, horizontal distribution matching with catchment, vertical stratification matching with altitude and homogeneity inhabited. In microcosmic level, the geographical differentiation, historical opportunity and cultural communication and other factors are exacerbated by the richness of settlement differences, forming a national and regional interlocking complex relationship between the mode of production and residential details have a significant performance.
On Problems in Bilingual Education of the Zhuang Language and Mandarin Chinese

Abstract:Since 1981,Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has been carrying out bilingual education of the Zhuang language and Mandarin Chinese.Investigating the relationship between language teaching and ethnic culture as well as the school curriculum,the study finds that the major problems include the utilitarianism of teaching goals,the excessive uniformity of teaching contents,and the incomplete curriculum management.It is proposed that the reform and development of Zhuang-Chinese bilingual education should be transformed from instrumentalism to resourcism,from singular culture-orientedness to integration of diversified cultures,and from experimental teaching to the building of a curriculum system.

They are named after family names and place names There are about 50 thousand people speaking them. According to their features, they can mainly be divided into three kinds:Xiazhui dialect, Zhanghuhe dialect and Wangshanluo dialect. Geographically these Tuhua are distributed along the watershed of several rivers in the quasi mountain area.
