Abstract:Interior design that imitates nature or plant channels that are easy to contact with nature has been proven to be an effective means to overcome the boring shortcomings of underground windowless environments, and artificial Windows (AW) with greenery vision provide similar external channels for underground spaces. This study assessed the impact of AW in simulated underground space on subjective perceptions, physiological, and work performance. We conducted a laboratory experiment with 20 participants in the rooms with and without AW and set three temperatures at 22°C, 25°C, and 28°C, and illumination to 550 lx, 750 lx, and 950 lx. Environmental and physiological parameters were monitored and responses to subjective questionnaires were collected. The results showed that AW help participants to blur the impression of uncomfortable ambient temperature in underground spaces (thermal acceptability vote increased by 0.39 at 22°C and 0.36 at 28°C), broaden the temperature range of 0.6°C. Participants were more likely to be sensitive to changes in the light environment (the effect of illuminance on lighting sensation vote increased by 3.9%). AW improved the monotonicity of the underground spaces, made participants feel more vivid and relaxed, and alleviated sick building syndrome (2.5% lower). The natural link channel provided by AW improves participants' subjective perceptions and subjective work performance, but it will reduce the objective work performance, and the impact on physiological parameters was not significant. This study demonstrates that AW in underground spaces positively impacts the subjective thermal perceptions, environment perceptions, and subjective work performance of office workers and has a certain energy-saving effect.
