Abstract:Water scarcity has emerged as an intense global threat to humanity and needs prompt attention from the scientific community. Solar-driven interfacial evaporation and seawater desalination are promising strategies to resolve the primitive water shortage issue using renewable resources. However, the fragile solar thermal devices, complex fabricating techniques, and high cost greatly hinder extensive solar energy utilization in remote locations. Herein, we report the facile fabrication of a cost-effective solar-driven interfacial evaporator and seawater desalination system composed of carbon cloth (CC)-wrapped polyurethane foam (CC@PU). The developed solar evaporator had outstanding photo-thermal conversion efficiency (90%) with a high evaporation rate (1.71 kg m−2 h−1). The interfacial layer of black CC induced multiple incident rays on the surface allowing the excellent solar absorption (92%) and intensifying heat localization (67.37 °C) under 1 kW m−2 with spatially defined hydrophilicity to facilitate the easy vapor escape and validate the efficacious evaporation structure using extensive solar energy exploitation for practical application. More importantly, the long-term evaporation experiments with minimum discrepancy under seawater conditions endowed excellent mass change (15.24 kg m−2 in consecutive 8 h under 1 kW m−2 solar irradiations) and promoted its operational sustainability for multi-media rejection and self-dissolving potential (3.5 g NaCl rejected from CC@PU surface in 210 min). Hence, the low-cost and facile fabrication of CC@PU-based interfacial evaporation structure showcases the potential for enhanced solar-driven interfacial heat accumulation for freshwater production with simultaneous salt rejection.

Abstract:Photothermal desalination driven by solar energy has emerged as a promising strategy for freshwater and clean energy production. One of the great challenges in interfacial evaporation is simultaneous achievement of superior freshwater production, salt harvesting, and electricity generation in an evaporator. Herein, an all‐inclusive photothermal solar steam generator using high‐performance photothermic converting film is reported, featuring in interconnected fibrous network, broadband absorption, heat insulation, and unidirectional water transfer. The superior characteristics can readily form a constant salinity gradient in system during vaporization, not only realizing the spatial isolation of evaporation and salt crystallization zones to harvesting freshwater and salt separately, but more importantly achieving continuous electricity generation from salinity gradient power without trade‐offs. Such stable solar steam generator integrated with efficient photothermal converting material and rational structural design highlights the practical consideration toward solar distillation by deep desalination, which can not only sustainably achieve the freshwater and salt production, but collaboratively generate the electricity for emergency needs.

Abstract:Clean water scarcity is still an intense, prolonged global issue that needs to be resolved urgently. The solar steam generation has shown great potential with a high energy conversion efficiency for clean water production from seawater and wastewater. However, the high evaporation rate of water cannot be preserved due to the inevitable fouling of solar absorbers. Herein, a self-floatable and super hydrophilic solar-driven steam generator composed of activated carbon coated melamine foam (ACM). The deposited ACM photothermal layer exhibits outstanding solar absorption (92%) and an efficient evaporation rate of 1.27 kg m−2 h−1, along with excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (80%) as compared to commercially available primitive solar stills. The open porous assembly of melamine foam equipped with 80% flexibility (0.8 MPa) enabled smooth water transport and sustain heat accumulation within the matrix. The thermal insulation of ACM is 10 times greater than pure water. Moreover, open porous assembly of designed solar-powered steam generator rejects salt ions as well as volatile organic compounds efficiently. The low-cost and facile fabrication of photothermal based water production presents a potential solution to single step drinking water supply from various resources of the sea, the lakes and mixtures of emulsified oil and industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Nowadays, sweet and drinkable water shortage is a global issue which has attracted widespread attention. Desalination of seawater as the greatest source of water on our planet using solar energy as the most abundant and green energy source for producing fresh water can help us address this issue. Interfacial solar desalination is a state-of-the-art, sustainable, green, and energy-efficient method that has been studied lately. One of the key parameters for researching this method with reasonable efficiency is a photothermal material. Herein, carbon-coated sand was synthesized using abundant, green, and low-cost materials (sand and sugar), and its performance as a photothermal material is investigated and reported. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) system is introduced to develop the performance and efficiency of the system under real sun irradiation and natural circumstances. The salt rejection ability of the system is another important thing we should notice due to the high salinity of seawater that we want to desalinate. The superhydrophilic carbonized sand demonstrated a good evaporation rate of 1.53 kg/m2h and 82% efficiency under 1 sun irradiation and upright salt rejection ability, which exhibited its capability to be used in green solar-driven water vaporization technology for sweet water production. The effects of important parameters, including light intensity, wind speed, and environment temperature, on the evaporation rate using carbonized sand as a solar collector in a solar desalination system were studied in both laboratory and real systems.

Abstract:<p>Localized heating-based solar distillation has recently emerged as an efficient and facile way to generate freshwater out of saline water. Salt fouling, however, remains a fundamental challenge to stable operation of the desalination system, in particular for high-salinity brine. Here we demonstrate a solar-driven interfacial evaporation-based desalination structure, which achieves localized surface salt precipitation through mediating the horizontal salt concentration gradient within the printed paper-based solar absorber, to minimize salt fouling while maintaining heat localization. With optimized design, such desalination system achieves a stable evaporation efficiency of ~78% under 1100 W m<sup>−2</sup> solar illumination, and simultaneously generates drinkable water out of 10 wt% brine with a solar-to-water conversion efficiency more than 40% and NaCl salts with higher productivity over conventional bulk heating-based salt farm technology. This low-cost, environmentally-friendly, bifunctional desalination technology not only helps solve the salt fouling issue but also holds the potential to offer a new way to extract minerals from seawater.</p>

Abstract:Interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly strategy for addressing the energy and water crises. In this study, we fabricated a highly efficient and cost-effective plasmonic photoabsorber for ISSG of seawater by coating silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on pinecone (PC). The PC with low thermal conductivity and numerous aligned microchannels for fast water transport, provides sufficient water supply and reduces the bulk heat loss. In addition, Ag NPs strongly absorb solar radiation through the surface plasmon resonance effect. Using Ag/PC under 1 sun (1 kW m –2 ), we achieved an evaporation flux and efficiency of 1.82 kg m –2 h –1 and 100%, respectively. Moreover, Ag/PC removed more than 99% of Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ ions from seawater. The plasmonic PC also exhibited excellent cycling during 10 cycles efficiency of ISSG. Furthermore, treatment of paper industry wastewater with Ag/PC resulted in a significant decrease in the concentration of ions.

Abstract:Solar-driven seawater desalination has received massive attention as it holds great promise to solve the worldwide freshwater and energy issues. The key of this technology relies on the exploitation of broad-spectrum solar absorbers and the construction of evaporators with high-efficient thermal management. Among all the available solar absorbers, photothermal fabrics stand out with conspicuous properties, such as rich source, low cost, large specific surface area, wide versatility, high structure tunability and excellent flexibility. This review aims to summarize the recent advancement in the fabrication strategies of photothermal fabrics, including surface modification, high-temperature carbonization, electrospinning, blowspinning, and weaving. The design of superstructural photothermal fabrics is also discussed in relation to the wide-spectral photoabsorption and directional moisture transport. The construction of solar evaporators with photothermal fabrics are also highlighted, including floating evaporator, reversible evaporator, three-dimensional isolated evaporator, hanging evaporator, heliotropic evaporator; which focus on their structure–function relationships on light absorption enhancement, heat loss reduction, salt-crystallization resistance, etc. At last, this review provides a detailed introduction and outlook on the transference applications of solar-driven seawater evaporation in catalysis, electric energy generation, and saline soil remediation, aiming to address the potential solution to the interconnected challenges of freshwater scarcity, energy deficits, and environmental pollution.

Abstract:Inadequate access to clean water and wasteful resource consumption during production pose significant challenges in global development. To combat these issues, interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) has emerged as an energy-efficient solution to mitigate the ongoing water scarcity crisis. However, the application of ISSG is hindered by high costs and intricate fabrication processes associated with synthetic functional materials. In response, this study introduces an innovative approach that repurposes abundant by-products generated from hemp fiber production. Hemp fiber noil are transformed into a nonwoven fabric substrate, onto which hemp stem-derived biochar is seamlessly integrated using a straightforward spray-coating technique, establishing an efficient solar-to-heat conversion evaporator. Leveraging the durability of hemp fibers, this system achieves an impressive seawater evaporation rate of 1.47 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 sun condition, making it highly competitive in seawater desalination research. This pioneering strategy combines waste green materials and their functional counterparts, unlocking practical applications, addressing resource scarcity, and mitigating environmental pollution. This research highlights the potential of sustainable material utilization to tackle pressing global challenges.

Abstract:An interfacial assembled hydrogel evaporator MPPH‐S is obtained. Its unique interfacial assembly structure enables long‐term high‐performance solar desalination and effective purification of organic pollutant solutions, showcasing remarkable stability and adaptability. The structure formed by interfacial assembly can also serve as a platform for hydrogen production through overall water splitting in a coupled photothermal evaporation–catalysis system. This study presents the design and synthesis of a hydrogel composite optimized for Interface Solar Steam Generation (ISSG), merging photothermal MoS2 hollow nanospheres, enhanced via polydopamine (PDA) coating for superior light absorption, with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel matrix. The composite achieves a photothermal conversion efficiency of 95.6% at the interface, highlighting its effectiveness in solar energy harvesting. Under 1 kW m−2 solar irradiance, remarkable evaporation rates of 5.41 kg m−2 h−1 (pure water) and 5.07 kg m−2 h−1 (seawater) are recorded, alongside conversion efficiencies of 93.7% and 90.8%. Outdoor testing confirms a steady freshwater production at 3.11 kg m−2 h−1. Incorporating the photothermal evaporation coupled with water splitting for hydrogen production, this system effectively mitigates the corrosive effects of chloride ions typically encountered in seawater, ensuring the integrity of the catalyst and thereby maintaining a high hydrogen production rate of 45.5 mmol m−2 h−1. It exemplifies a sophisticated approach to balancing thermal dynamics and water transportation in solar evaporation technology. By demonstrating the feasibility of concurrent efficient photothermal evaporation and catalytic hydrogen production, this research introduces a pivotal strategy for enhancing the practicality and versatility of ISSG systems, thereby advancing sustainable energy and water treatment solutions.

Abstract:Solar‐driven interfacial steam generation covers a wide range of application from wastewater purification to desalination and distillation through development of photothermal materials via various synthesis approach and development technique in sustainable manner. The solar steam generation with salt rejection method can be a potential solution of seawater purification with most sustainable approach and zero‐liquid discharge. Solar energy is one of the most efficient origins of energy for a wide range of environmentally beneficial purposes. Water desalination by steam generation with the help of solar energy is not only an economical and straightforward approach, but it also utilizes free energy sources to solve the problem of increasing freshwater scarcity. Solar water evaporation is an essential component of the low‐energy method for generating fresh water, which is required for economic development and human health. Freshwater productivity determines how effectively the system captures incoming solar energy and transforms it into usable heat. Effective water distillation has recently gained a lot of attention. The photothermal conversion process is built on the performance of the evaporator. This review thoroughly examines the most recent developments in photothermal materials, structure design, and engineering strategies, including design principles for highly efficient photothermal conversion, thermal management, water transport phenomena, salt rejection behavior, and improved evaporation rate. The prospective applications of this technique in saline water desalination, waste water purification, and energy generation are highlighted. Abstract:Interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) technology provides a promising solution to the global issue of freshwater scarcity. However, its practical application is hindered by salt fouling and inconsistent solar illumination. In this work, a novel interfacial solar steam generator is proposed that integrates contactless design with low-voltage joule heating to provide all-day, all-weather freshwater generation. The contactless design utilizes a solar-reduced graphene oxide coated carbon fabric (SRGO-CF) as a heat generator and super hydrophilic paper walls as water transport channels. The contactless device can generate steam at the maximum rate of 4.27 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun solar illumination and small input voltage due to the excellent photothermal and electrothermal capabilities of SRGO-CF. At an input voltage of 2.5 V, the SRGO-CF evaporator exhibits an evaporation rate of 3.52 kg m-2 h-1 and 2.32 kg m-2 h-1 for 3.5 wt % salt water respectively with and without 1 sun illumination for a long period of time without any salt fouling, demonstrating its all-day, all-weather capability. The proposed contactless ISSG evaporator can resolve the impractical issue of conventional ISSG-based evaporators owing to irregular weather conditions and salt fouling issues while also promoting zero liquid discharge-based salt harvesting.

Abstract:The freshwater shortage continues to be one of the greatest challenges affecting our planet. Although traditional membrane distillation (MD) can produce clean water regardless of climatic conditions, the process wastes a lot of energy. The technique of solar-powered membrane distillation (SPMD) has received a lot of interest in the past decade, thanks to the development of photothermal materials. SPMD is a promising replacement for the traditional MD based on fossil fuels, as it can prevent the harmful effects of emissions on the environment. Integrating green solar energy with MD can reduce the cost of the water purification process and secure freshwater production in remote areas. At this point, it is important to consider the most current progress of the SPMD system and highlight the challenges and prospects of this technology. Based on this, the background, recent advances, and principles of MD and SPMD, their configurations and mechanisms, fabrication methods, advantages, and current limitations are discussed. Detailed comparisons between SPMD and traditional MD, assessments of various standards for incorporating photothermal materials with desirable properties, discussions of desalination and other applications of SPMD and MD, and energy consumption rates are also covered. The final section addresses the potential of SPMD to outperform traditional desalination technology while improving water production without requiring a significant amount of electrical or high-grade thermal energy.

Abstract:Solar desalination is regarded as a promising technology for addressing severe freshwater scarcity, yet its long-term performance is challenged by salt fouling. Here, we develop an integrated solar evaporator with a hierarchy composed of a porous melamine foam core (MF) as a framework, black graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets as the solar absorption layer, and a positively charged poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) shell as the salt rejecting layer. The solar evaporator equipped with a macro-, micro-, and nanoscale structure triggers multifunctional properties boosting efficiency and stability in desalinating multiple salinities. The solar evaporator achieves high energy efficiency in pure water and exhibits rather high efficiency under hypersaline conditions (82.8-93.4% in 0-25 wt% brine) compared with the state-of-the-art evaporators. The integral functions of the multiscale hierarchy bring about an optimized solar absorption rate (97.6%), improved photothermal conversion ability (25.0 degrees C), ultrahigh wettability (0.252 s), and excellent thermal insulation properties (0.0505 W m(-1) K-1). The multilayer properties were achieved with a neutral core, negatively charged GO interlayer, and positively charged PEI outlayer benefiting salt rejection by the electrostatic repulsion forces. The multiscale structure improves the solar evaporation efficiency by regulating the states of water molecules. In Situ Thermal and Electricity Utilization of Photovoltaic Devices by Membrane Distillation and Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation for Desalination and Degradation of Wastewater

Abstract:Freshwater shortages and water pollution have threatened the sustainable development of human beings. Efficient and sustainable technologies are urgently needed to achieve seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. Here, a hybrid device is developed consisting of photovoltaics (PV), membrane distillation (MD), and electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) for sustainable freshwater production and wastewater treatment. The device obtains freshwater from seawater with a stable rate of 0.97 kg m(-2) h(-1) under 1 sun, and the produced clean water reaches the drinking water limit of the WHO. This device also obtains freshwater from a methylene blue (MB) solution at a stable water production rate of 0.75 kg m(-2) h(-1), and the concentrated MB solution demonstrates a degradation rate of 96.05% by in situ degradation of EAOPs. The high water-production performance and degradation performance is attributed to the well-designed structure of the three stages PV-MD-EAOPs device, which enables both the latent heat recycle of water evaporation and the contaminants enrichment of wastewater. To summarize, a new path is explored for in situ thermal and electricity utilization of photovoltaic for efficient treatment of wastewater, which is a meaningful way for synchronous clean water production and wastewater treatment.
Highly efficient 3D-screen printed interfacial solar water desalination system

Abstract:Interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) using floating devices is one of the most efficient and simple methods of purifying saline water. In this work, multi-layered solar steam generation systems are fabricated using 3D-screen printing. The printed devices with a uniform layer-by-layer structure contain light-harvesting, thermal insulation, thermal conduction, and water-transfer layers. The graphite (Gr) photothermal layer as an absorber layer is screen printed on the felt substrate with three different 3D patterns, which is isolated by transparent hydrophobic silica aerogel (SA) as a light scattering agent to provide efficient photon capturing and heat localization. Furthermore, to transfer the generated heat to the water proficiently, a copper (Cu) layer is coated on the downside of the absorber layer. The devices with the best performances are introduced by evaluating the effect of the fabricated layers thickness and different configurations. The multi-layered device containing a photothermal layer with SP1-3rd pattern and different thicknesses of SA 32 μm (under Cu), Cu 16 μm, Gr 32 μm, and SA 32 μm (on top of the Gr) shows a steam generation efficiency of 97 %, and water evaporation flux of 1.43 kg.m −2 .h −1 , which are 86 % higher than the performance of the reference system.

Abstract:Water scarcity is a serious problem in several regions, especially in isolated communities located in desert or arid areas of the world. One of the most promising solutions to address this problem is desalination. Solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation technology has demonstrated that it can be an ideal and clean alternative to fossil fuels, especially in remote and isolated areas where there is no accessibility to power grids, or such accessibility is difficult. The integration of desalination plants with solar PV systems for water production is nearly competitive because of both the decreasing trend of PV prices and the increasing trend of fossil fuel prices over recent years. The generated electricity by PV systems integrated with desalination plants can be utilized to drive electromechanical devices, including pumps and fans, electric heaters, etc., and in a larger range, any direct-current (DC) apparatus. The most mature conventional desalination technologies for integration with solar PV systems are reverse osmosis (RO) and electrodialysis (ED). Due to operating RO based on alternative current (AC), a DC/AC inverter is required while ED systems operate based on DC current. Membrane distillation is another desalination technology that requires thermal power to operate, but PV modules can also be integrated to supply the required electricity for other attached equipment. In addition, the integration of PV modules with solar stills, which are the most favorable alternatives in remote areas for supplying freshwater, has great potential to overcome some of the problems regarding conventional distillation systems. In all mentioned PV-powered desalination systems, energy storage or an electricity back-up system is critical to guarantee sustained operation. The main barrier for worldwide deployment of PV-powered desalination systems is the high investment costs, resulting in high produced water costs. However, there is huge potential for further enhancement of performance, energy savings, and cost reductions.
