Abstract:2,2 ',7,7 '-Tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) is an irreplaceable hole transport material (HTM) for high-performance n-i-p perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and an oxidation process is necessary to improve its conductivity and hole mobility. The conventional oxidation process takes overnight or even longer in dry air with low reproducibility. Herein, we develop a hot pure oxygen treatment (HPOT) strategy to shorten the oxidation process to 5 h. Compared to the conventional method, HPOT intrinsically improves the conductivity and hole mobility of the spiro-OMeTAD film, resulting in a lower series resistance for the PSC devices. With the downshift of the Fermi level, the hole injection from the perovskite layer to the spiro-OMeTAD was facilitated. As a result, the conventional n-i-p PSC devices based on HPOT-spiro-OMeTAD deliver a certified power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.34% with a record certified fill factor (FF) reaching 87.02%. Meanwhile, the HPOT-spiro-OMeTAD layer affords enhanced light stability to the PSC devices.

Abstract:Surface treatment of SnO2 as an electron transport layer is essential for improving charge transport and device performance in the fabrication of perovskite solar cells. In this study, oxygen plasma with a controlled ion–radical composition ratio was used for rapid surface treatment to clean the surface of SnO2, and its performance was compared with that of the conventional UV–ozone treatment. Consequently, the plasma treatment succeeded in increasing the processing speed up to 40 times faster than that required for the conventional UV–ozone pretreatment. Furthermore, plasma pretreatment improved the photostability of solar cells.

Abstract:Spiro-OMeTAD has been playing an indispensable role in highly-efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, a long air oxidation progress is usually required, which is harmful to the device stability. Herein, a simple and efficient doping strategy is proposed by adding a low-cost organic oxidant (2-Iodoxybenzoic acid, IBX) to spiro-OMeTAD. IBX can accelerate the oxidation process of spiro-OMeTAD, thus effectively improving the conductivity and hole mobility of hole transport layer. What's more interesting, it is found that the reduction product of IBX, 2-iodobenzoic acid, can passivate the I vacancies and uncoordinated Pb2+ defects on the surface of perovskite, thereby inhibiting the nonradiative recombination. Ultimately, the IBX-treated PSCs achieved a power conversion efficiency of 22.45%, superior to the pristine device (20.42%). In addition, the stability of the IBX-based device is improved. Overall speaking, the cost-effective, facile and dual functional doping strategy is quite promising in improving the efficiency and stability of PSCs.

Abstract:Lithium salt-doped spiro-OMeTAD is widely used as a hole-transport layer (HTL) for high-efficiency n-i-p perovskite solar cells (PSCs), but unfortunately facing awkward instability for commercialization arising from the intrinsic Li+ migration and hygroscopicity. We herein demonstrate a superoxide radicals (•O2-) derived HTL of metal-free spiro-OMeTAD with remarkable capability of avoiding the conventional tedious oxidation treatment in air for highly stable PSCs. Present work explores the employing of variant-valence Eu(TFSI)2 salts that could generate •O2- for facile and adequate pre-oxidation of spiro-OMeTAD, resulting in the HTL with dramatically increased conductivity and work function. Comparing to devices adopting HTL with LiTFSI doping, the •O2--derived spiro-OMeTAD increases the PSCs efficiency up to 25.45% and 20.76% for 0.05 cm2 active area and 6 × 6 cm2 module, respectively. State-of-art PSCs employing such metal-free HTLs are also demonstrated to show much-improved environmental stability even under harsh conditions, e.g., maintaining over 90% of their initial efficiency after 1000 h of operation at the maximum power point and after 80 light-thermal cycles under simulated low earth orbit conditions, respectively, indicating the potentials of developing metal-free spiro-OMeTAD for low-cost and shortened processing of perovskite photovoltaics.

Abstract:As one of the most widely used hole transport materials (HTMs) in optoelectronics devices, 2,2’,7,7’‐tetrakis[N,N‐di(4‐methoxyphenyl)amino]‐9,9‐spirobifluorene (spiro‐OMeTAD) has endowed perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with record power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). However, the long oxidation time in the ambient atmosphere is time‐consuming. Furthermore, commonly used solvents for spiro‐OMeTAD film processing such as chlorobenzene (CB) are toxic, which severely hinders the commercialization of PSCs. Herein, ethyl acetate (EA) serves as a superior green solvent alternative to the typical processing solvent, which substantially reduces the oxidation time of spiro‐OMeTAD. Without postoxidation treatment and any other additional oxidizing agents, the resultant device delivers a high PCE of 23.3%, significantly outperforming the CB‐based device. It is also the highest efficiency obtained from nonhalogenated solvent‐processed spiro‐OMeTAD. The electrostatic potential mapping demonstrates that the electron density at nitrogen atoms of EA‐processed spiro‐OMeTAD is more delocalized, leading to a faster oxidation. Furthermore, the processing solvent EA is a green solvent with low toxicity, and the amount of HTMs used in the fabrication of solar cells can be dramatically reduced. This study provides a new solution for processing spiro‐OMeTAD, which is ideal for the mass production of PSCs.

Abstract:A series of spiro-type hole transporting materials, spiro-OMeTAD, spiro-SMeTAD and spiro-OSMeTAD, with methoxy, methylsulfanyl or half methoxy and half methylsulfanyl terminal groups are designed and prepared. The impact of varied terminal groups on bulk properties, such as photophysical, electrochemical, thermal, hole extraction, and photovoltaic performance in perovskite solar cells is investigated. It is noted that the terminal groups of the hole transporting material with half methoxy and half methylsulfanyl exhibit a better device performance and decreased hysteresis compared with all methoxy or methylsulfanyl counterparts due to better film-forming ability and improved hole extraction capability. Promisingly, the spiro-OSMeTAD also shows comparable performance than high-purity commercial spiro-OMeTAD. Moreover, the highest power conversion efficiency of the optimized device employing spiro-OSMeTAD exceeding 20% has been achieved.

Abstract:The performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is significantly governed by the interface of perovskite layer. Therefore, a great deal of attention has been paid to the interface engineering of perovskite layer to improve the performance of PSC. In the meantime, KCl is one of the popular molecules being utilized for the interface treatment between SnO2 and perovskite. In this study, we investigate the effect of UV‐ozone (UVO) treatment of KCl interlayer on the photovoltaic performance. A device employing UVO‐treated KCl shows a higher power conversion efficiency mainly based on an increased open‐circuit voltage (VOC). Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicates that the UVO treatment induces a rearrangement of energy level at the interface, being responsible for the increase in VOC. Accordingly, an increased charge recombination resistance is evidenced by impedance spectroscopy owing to the inhibited recombination at the SnO2 and perovskite interface by the aid of the aligned energy level.

Abstract:Hole transport materials (HTMs) play an important role for achieving high performance and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Although the state-of-the-art HTM, spiro-OMeTAD, has been successfully applied in PSCs, it exhibits an inferior conductivity and hole mobility, which hampers its future application in commercial PSCs. In this study, a common and strong inorganic oxidant, kalium persulfate (KPS), is introduced as a p-type dopant into spiro-OMeTAD for PSCs with a regular n-i-p architecture. By the introduction of KPS into spiro-OMeTAD films, we systematically investigated the morphology, optoelectrical properties and energy level of KPS-doped hole transport layer (HTL). The results indicate that the incorporation of KPS could not only oxidize spiro-OMeTAD efficiently, but also suppress ion migration by passivating the defect states at the perovskite surface. Accordingly, the KPS-modified PSC with a champion PCE of 20.23% delivered a stabilized output efficiency of 19.59%, while the control device exhibited an inferior PCE of 18.29% with a stabilized power output of 17.51%. More importantly, the devices employed KPS-doped spiro-OMeTAD exhibited less hysteresis and superior long-term stability. Our study provides an insight for HTL engineering by using a low-cost inorganic oxidant for highly efficient and stable PSCs.

Effective Regulation of Surface Bridging Hydroxyls on TiO2 for Superior Photocatalytic Activity Via Ozone Treatment

Abstract:A gas-solid and postsynthetic modification was proposed to enrich surface bridging hydroxyls (OHB) on TiO2 using ozone. It was found that the adsorbed ozone and its decomposition into oxygen atoms on oxygen vacancies would induce water dissociation and form OHB, narrowing the bandgap and enhancing the photoresponse. The increased OHB significantly doubled the efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers transfer, thus generating more reactive oxygen species. Additionally, OHB provided more adsorption sites for toluene, contributing to the excellent activity and stability. The degradation pathways of toluene containing OH addition and hydrogen abstraction were proposed based on in situ DRIFTS results. Ozone treatment was more effective than other reported surface treatments, and presented a universal improvement on both gas-solid and liquid-solid photodegradation. This work provides a facile, effective, and alternative strategy for the targeted regulation of OHB on TiO2 under mild conditions and insight into the mechanism underlying the process.
Oxidization-Free Spiro-OMeTAD Hole-Transporting Layer for Efficient CsPbI 2 Br Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The inorganic CsPbI2Br perovskite faces serious challenges of low phase stability and high moisture sensitivity. The moisture controllable process of a hole-transporting layer (HTL) is crucial for the development of stable and efficient inorganic perovskite solar cells (IPSCs). In this work, we proposed an oxidization-free spiro-OMeTAD hole-transport layer (HTL) with a preoxidized spiro-OMeTAD solution to prevent moisture and completely avoid the phase transition of CsPbI2Br from the α-phase to β-phase. The oxidization-free HTL exhibited improved surface hydrophobic properties, smoother morphology, and optimized energy-level alignment compared with a traditional HTL. As a result, the CsPbI2Br-based IPSCs achieved an efficiency of up to 14.2 and 86.6% of the initial power conversion efficiency (PCE) with 2000 h storage. Meanwhile, this oxidization-free HTL was applied in CH3NH3PbI3-based PSCs and obtained 13.8% PCE enhancement, which proved the universality of the solution preoxidization tactic. Investigation on the Mechanism of Radical Intermediate Formation and Moderate Oxidation of Spiro-OMeTAD by the Synergistic Effect of Multisubstituted Polyoxometalates in Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Conventional oxidation of 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9′-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) by air would bring various drawbacks for perovskite solar cells (PSCs), such as low power conversion efficiency (PCE) and poor stability. Here, a series of heteroatom-substituted Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs), H4PMo11VO40 (PMo11V), H5PMo10V2O40 (PMo10V2), and H6PMo9V3O40 (PMo9V3) are prepared and applied as p-type dopants to realize quantitative and controllable oxidation of Spiro-OMeTAD under an inert condition. The possible mechanism and electron donor regions in the oxidation of Spiro-OMeTAD are investigated using two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and the relationship between POM structures and the oxidation degree of Spiro-OMeTAD is proposed. In addition, the synergistic effect of heteroatoms makes V2-substituted PMo10V2 exhibit appropriate oxidation of Spiro-OMeTAD and promoted the highest efficient hole extraction as well as the decreased charge recombination. Therefore, the champion device doped with PMo10V2 shows a PCE of 20.41% and a superior open circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.133 V, surpassing that of the pristine device (18.61%). Abstract:Spiro-OMeTAD, one of the most widely used hole-transport materials (HTMs) in optoelectronic devices, typically requires chemical doping with a lithium compound (LiTFSI) to attain sufficient conductivity and efficient hole extraction. However, the doping step requires an activation process that comprises exposure of the blend films to an ambient atmosphere. Additionally, the lithium dopant induces crystallization, and its hygroscopic nature negatively impacts device performance and lifetime. Here we report a facile approach based on the incorporation of a low-cost alkylthiol additive (1-dodecanethiol, DDT) in the spiro-OMeTAD HTM. We discover that DDT provides a more efficient and controllable doping process with significantly reduced doping duration, enabling the HTM to achieve comparable performance before air activation. The coordination between DDT and LiTFSI increases the concentration of dopants in the HTM bulk, reduces their accumulation at interfaces, and enhances the structural integrity of the HTM under wetting, heat and light stress. We fabricate perovskite solar cells using DDT-treated spiro-OMeTAD as the HTM. Our best devices exhibit a certified power conversion efficiency of 23.1%. Furthermore, the devices can retain 90% of peak performance under continuous illumination for 1,000 h. Our findings represent an important step forward in the production of doped spiro-OMeTAD, as well as its reliable application and future device commercialization.

Abstract:Spiro-OMeTAD is a widely used hole-transporting material (HTM) that plays a crucial role in achieving highly efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, a series of demethylated functionalized spiro-OMeTAD-based derivatives with different numbers of hydroxyl substituted groups (named as SOH2, SOH4, and SOH6) were synthesized, and their thermal, optical, electrical, and electrochemical properties have been investigated as potential HTMs for PSCs. It has been found that the molecule with six hydroxyl substituted groups on the spiro-OMeTAD-based structure SOH6 exhibited the highest glass transition temperature (Tg) and melting point (Tm) as compared to SOH2 and SOH4 molecules. The UV-Vis absorption spectra portrayed a distinct pattern with the increase in hydroxyl substituted groups as it was slightly blue-shifted for the SOH6 molecule compared to red-shifted for SOH2 and SOH4 molecules. Carrier mobility shows a notable improvement with the hydroxyl substitution. The density functional theory (DFT) has provided useful insight into identifying the chemical stability of spiro-OMeTAD derivatives. In the device simulation, hydroxyl substituted spiro SOH2 was found to outperform its pristine counterpart, achieving a peak PCE of 17.61% with a Voc of 0.98 V, a Jsc of 22.69 mA/cm2, and an FF of 80.67% within the device structure FTO/TiO2/MAPbI3/HTMs/Au. This investigation provided insight into the development of novel spiro-OMeTAD-based derivatives with enhanced optoelectronic properties and showed promising potential for addressing the limitations of traditional HTMs in PSCs.

Abstract:High efficiency organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells have attracted significant attention and experienced a rapid development in recent years. Lithium-doped spiro-OMeTAD is one of the most commonly used hole transporting material, however, the hygroscopicity of lithium dopant usually causes serious moisture instability of devices. Herein, we demonstrate a dopant-free spiro-OMeTAD as hole transporting layer to improve the ambient stability of planar perovskite solar cells. With the optimization of the thickness of spiro-OMeTAD layer, the dopant-free spiro-OMeTAD based device achieved a comparable device performance with a champion power conversion efficiency of 16.92%. Moreover, the unencapsulated dopant-free device showed significantly improved stability, which still maintained 95% of its initial efficiency after storage in ambient environment for 60 days. This work provides a simple and valid approach to overcome the instability issue of spiro-OMeTAD based devices, paving a way to manufacture more stable and efficient perovskite photovoltaics.

However, most molecular passivators currently employed to alleviate interfacial defects generate poorly conductive aggregates at the interfaces, hindering the extraction of charge carriers. Here, a holistic interface engineering strategy employing a highly crystalline small molecule of 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C8-BTBT) is reported. We reveal that C8-BTBT bridges the perovskite film to the hole-transporting layer with reduced interfacial defects and improved charge carrier management. Moreover, such interfacial modification with air-stable C8-BTBT achieves a desirable and robust morphology of Spiro-OMeTAD by reducing the aggregates. Accordingly, C8-BTBT-treated devices exhibit a great enhancement to all photovoltaic performance characteristics with an absolute efficiency improvement exceeding 2%. The C8-BTBT-modified Spiro-OMeTAD enables decent thermal tolerance, which paves the way for enhancing the performance of Spiro-OMeTAD-based perovskite optoelectronics.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites are a promising class of materials for low-cost and high-efficiency photovoltaics; however, there are still stability and scalability challenges that need to be overcome to realize the full potential of this technology. We report a method for making improved barrier layers within the perovskite solar cell stack to reduce interdiffusion between the perovskite absorber and the environment during both device fabrication and operation. This work studies the formation of these barriers and their impact on perovskites devices.

Degradation of UV328 by ozone/peroxymonosulfate system: Performance and mechanisms

Abstract:2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4,6-di-tert-pentylphenol (UV328) is an emerging persistent organic pollutant ubiquitously found in environmental matrices. Though some advanced oxidation processes have been tested to degrade UV328 in waste streams, the degradation mechanisms are largely unknown. In this study, the degradation of UV328 by ozone (O3) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was systemically investigated. At neutral pH, 97.0% UV328 was removed in 5 min with 6.4 mg/min O3 and 2 mM PMS, and the degradation rate was positively correlated with the concentration of oxidants. Hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) participated in the degradation of UV328, in which 1O2 played a key role. Based on the identified transformation intermediates and density functional theory simulations, three degradation pathways of dehydrogenation, cycloaddition and hydroxylation were proposed. •OH and SO4•- radicals could attack UV328 through hydrogen atom abstraction channel. 1O2-mediated cycloaddition reaction is favorable, and •OH could react with UV328 via radical adduct formation pathway. Toxicity assessment indicated that O3/PMS treatment mitigated the ecological risks of UV328.

Abstract:Due to a still limited understanding of the reasons making 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) the state-of-the-art hole-transporting material (HTM) for emerging photovoltaic applications, the molecular tailoring of organic components for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) lacks in solid design criteria. Charge delocalization in radical cationic states can undoubtedly be considered as one of the essential prerequisites for an HTM, but this aspect has been investigated to a relatively minor extent. In marked contrast with the 3-D structure of Spiro-OMeTAD, truxene-based HTMs Trux1 and Trux2 have been employed for the first time in PSCs fabricated with a direct (n-i-p) or inverted (p-i-n) architecture, exhibiting a peculiar behavior with respect to the referential HTM. Notwithstanding the efficient hole extraction from the perovskite layer exhibited by Trux1 and Trux2 in direct configuration devices, their photovoltaic performances were detrimentally affected by their poor hole transport. Conversely, an outstanding improvement of the photovoltaic performances in dopant-free inverted configuration devices compared to Spiro-OMeTAD was recorded, ascribable to the use of thinner HTM layers. The rationalization of the photovoltaic performances exhibited by different configuration devices discussed in this paper can provide new and unexpected prospects for engineering the interface between the active layer of perovskite-based solar cells and the hole transporters.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells are very promising for practical applications owing to their rapidly rising power conversion efficiency and low cost of solution-based processing. 2,2',7,7'-Tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine) 9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) is most widely used as a hole-transporting material (HTM) in perovskite solar cells. However, the tedious synthesis and high cost of Spiro-OMeTAD inhibit its commercial-scale application in the photovoltaic industry. In this article, we report a carbazole-based compound (R01) as a new HTM in efficient perovskite solar cells. R01 is synthesized via a facile route consisting of only two steps from inexpensive commercially available Furthermore, R01 exhibits higher hole mobility and conductivity than the state-of-the-art Spiro-OMeTAD. Perovskite solar cells fabricated with R01 produce a power conversion efficiency of 12.03%, comparable to that obtained in devices using Spiro-OMeTAD in this study. Our findings underscore R01 as a highly promising HTM with high performance, and its facile synthesis and low cost may facilitate the large-scale applications of perovskite solar cells.
