Abstract:We demonstrate the fabrication of amphiphilic nano-sheets, which are either surface-or edge-modified plates with thickness at the atomic scale, one of the thinnest amphiphilic particles reported so far. They are obtained by exfoliation of functionalized layered crystals, the first time that laminar structures have been utilized to produce such particles. Stable emulsions were made utilizing these nano-sheets. The adsorption of the amphiphilic nano-sheets onto the oil-in-water interfaces and the reduction of surface tension between the PDMS and the amphiphilic nano-sheet suspensions were quantitatively characterized.

Abstract:In this work, short rod-like cationic cellulose nanocrystals (AH-CNCs) were prepared by sodium periodate oxidation combined with deep eutectic solvent method. The effects of different content AH-CNCs on the properties of the emulsion were studied. With the increase of AH-CNCs content, the diameter of emulsion droplets decreased and the stabilization time prolonged. The electrostatic attraction between the negative charge accumulated at the oil-water interface and AH-CNCs with positive charge improved the stability of the emulsion. Then, the rheological properties showed the interaction of nanocellulose in the continuous phase increased the viscosity of the emulsion. In addition, the droplet diameter of emulsion of 120 s was smaller at different ultrasonic time, the particle size distribution of emulsion changed from monodisperse to polydisperse with the increase of oil volume, the salt concentration had little effect on the droplet size of emulsion, and the preparation of emulsion under acidic conditions was more stable.

Abstract:This study explores the use of cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-stabilized Pickering emulsions for paper coatings, focusing on their rheological properties and effects on hydrophilicity and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). Two types of Pickering emulsions, oil-in-water (O/W), were stabilized with 1 wt% CNF extracted from fique by-products. The oily phases of the emulsions were composed of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and cocoa butter (CB). The physical stability, viscosity, and viscoelasticity of the emulsions were characterized. The emulsions were applied to the surfaces of Bond and Kraft papers using the rod-coating method. The coating process involved first applying a layer of the PLA emulsion followed by a layer of the CB emulsion. The coated papers were then evaluated by FE-SEM, contact angle, adhesion work, and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). The results indicated that the coatings effectively produced a slightly hydrophobic surface on the papers, with contact angles approaching 90°. Initially, Kraft paper exhibited a WVTR value of 29.20 ± 1.13 g/m2·h, which significantly decreased to 7.06 ± 2.80 g/m2·h after coating, representing a reduction of 75.82%. Similarly, natural Bond paper showed a WVTR value of 30.56 ± 0.34 g/m2·h, which decreased to 14.37 ± 5.91 g/m2·h after coating, indicating a reduction of 47.02%. These findings demonstrate the potential of CNF-stabilized Pickering emulsions for enhancing the performance of paper coatings in terms of hydrophobicity and moisture barrier properties. The approach of this study aligns with global sustainability goals in packaging materials combining the use of PLA and CB to develop a waterborne coating to enhance the moisture barrier properties, demonstrated by a substantial reduction in water vapor transmission rates, and an improved hydrophobicity of coated papers.

Abstract:Biodegradable colloidal particle materials are becoming attractive candidates as eco-friendly chemical additives in the low-carbon economy era. However, developing cheap, stable, and efficient paper-sizing agents is still a challenging issue for both the paper-making academic community and industry. Here, an easy-fabricating, stable, and high-performance alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) paper-sizing emulsion that is stabilized by lauric arginate (LAE)/cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) nanorods is developed. Furthermore, the partial hydrophobization between ASA and LAE/CNCs can be adjusted due to the partial hydrophobization between ASA and LAE/CNC nanorods, resulting in improved stability of the ASA-sizing emulsion. This novel paper-sizing emulsion is shown to have a small droplet size (0.8 μm), high hydrolysis resistance, and a high paper-sizing degree (300 s) along with a remarkable hydrophobicity contact angle of 110° for long-term storage. This work enables the realization of an interfacial self-assembled Pickering-stabilizer, which leads to an environmentally friendly, pervasive and cost-effective emulsification technique for next-generation paper-sizing additives.

Abstract:Nanocellulose crystals (NCC) are efficient bio-particles in preparing Pickering emulsion with sustainable merits. In this study, a thermally curable coating emulsion was developed by stabilizing sustainable acrylate epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) in water using pristine NCC alone. A stable AESO aqueous emulsion was obtained by adjusting the AESO fraction to 10% and the concentration of NCC to 1.0 wt%. Fluorescence microscopy and conductivity measurement confirmed the emulsion inversed from oil-in-water to water-in-oil as AESO fraction increasing. Pickering emulsion of NCC concentrations ranging from 0.5 wt% to 3.0 wt% exhibited different droplets microstructure and rheological behavior. Increasing the concentration of NCC enhanced the stability of the corresponding emulsion, including an increase in viscosity and deformation recovery ability. The stability of the emulsion was correlative with the concentration of NCC suspensions, and the dynamic viscoelastic study provided useful guidance for identifying the fine difference between emulsions with respect to NCC concentration. Implementing of the AESO emulsion as a reactive coating on paper enhanced the paper water barrier and tensile strength due to the curing of AESO. This novel NCC stabilized AESO emulsion is surfactant-free in preparation and has a flexible application on paper as a reactive coating for enhanced barrier performances.

Abstract:The usage of bio-based polymers to construct paper-based functional materials is currently an important topic in the food packaging industry. Nevertheless, the facile and effective construction of packaging paper materials with excellent water and oil repellency, self-cleaning property, biodegradability and recyclability currently faces distinct challenges. In this aspect, we have developed a one-step coating method for preparing hydrophobic and grease-resistant paper basing on templating dichloromethane-in-water (O/W) cellulose nanocrystals-stabilized Pickering emulsions, which contain chitosan (CS) and glutinous rice starch (GRS) in water phase and polylactic acid (PLA) in oil phase. Herein, the greaseproof polysaccharides CS and GRS are served as the coating film matrix, where the hydrophobic PLA is embedded in the form of microspheres. The optimized coated paper with rough surface structure display highly hydrophobic and water barrier properties with the water contact angle of larger than 130° and water vapor transmission rate of 3.57 × 10−10 gm−1s−1Pa−1, outstanding oil resistance with the kit rating of 9.5/12 and self-cleaning performance. Most interestingly, the soil burial test shows the favourable biodegradability of the coated paper. In addition, the pulp can be recycled from the coated paper and then reused to make paper, validating the recyclability of the coated paper. This study provides a new sustainable and universal research strategy for the large-scale preparation of fully bio-based, recyclable, hydrophobic and oil-resistant, self-cleaning, biodegradable paper materials, which exhibit the highly promising applications in food packaging industry.

Abstract:Sulfated cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) with high surface charge density are inadequate for stabilizing oil-water emulsions, which limits their applications as interfacial stabilizers. We performed end-group modification by introducing hydrophobic chains (polystyrene) to CNC. Results showed that the modified CNC are more effective in emulsifying toluene and hexadecane than pristine CNC. Various parameters were investigated, such as concentration of particles, electrolytes, and polarity of solvents on the characteristics of the emulsions. This study provides strategies for the modification of cellulose nanocrystals to yield amphiphilic nanoparticles that enhance the stability of emulsions. Such systems, bearing biocompatible and environmentally friendly characteristics, are attractive for use in a wide range of industries spanning food, biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and petrochemicals.

Abstract:The structure and properties of functional nanoparticles are important for stabilizing Pickering emulsion polymerization. Recently, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are increasingly favored as a bio-based stabilizer for Pickering emulsions. In this study, we reported a novel functionalized polyphosphoester-grafted CNCs for the stabilization of oil-in-water Pickering emulsions and the emulsion polymerization of styrene. First, polyphosphoester containing an amino group at one end of the chain, abbreviated as PBYP-NH2, was prepared by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and hydrolysis reaction, wherein PBYP represents poly[2-(but-3-yn-1-yloxy)-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane]. Subsequently, CNC-COOH was obtained via 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidation of CNCs. The functionalized nanocrystals CNC-PBYP-COOH with carboxyl groups and polyphosphoester on the surface were obtained by the amidation reaction of PBYP-NH2 with CNC-COOH. Finally, we used CNC-PBYP-COOH as sole particle emulsifiers to stabilize styrene-in-water Pickering emulsions and studied its effects on the emulsions in details by using dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results indicated that the properties of these emulsions depended on the concentration of hydrophobically modified CNCs, volume ratios of oil to water, and pH values. The modified CNCs had higher ability to stabilize the styrene-in-water emulsions relative to the unmodified CNCs, and a stable oil-in-water (o/w) Pickering emulsion with diameter of hundreds of nanometers could be obtained. The resulting emulsions could be polymerized to yield nanosized latexes. The polyphosphoester-modified CNCs as green particle emulsifiers can efficiently stabilize nanoemulsions and latexes, which would promote the development of novel environmentally friendly materials.

Abstract:This work was focused on the fabrication of a stable O/W Pickering emulsion by using cellulose-rich composites that prepared by selectively oxidation with sodium periodate firstly, and followed by grafting dodecylamine to the 2,3-dialdehyde cellulose particles. The structure and properties of the modified cellulose microparticles were characterized, and the performance for the stabilization of O/W Pickering emulsions was investigated. The surface wettability, rheological behavior of the cellulose microparticles before and after being modified had been compared. The results indicated that the hydrophobically modified cellulose microparticles were more effective in emulsifying oil than that of the pristine cellulose microparticles. The contents of oil and cellulose microparticles used had an influence on the size of emulsion droplets, however, the responsiveness of the emulsions towards pH changed slightly, and oil was not leaked from the droplets at decreased pH. This could be explained by the amphiphilicity of the hydrophobically modified cellulose particles. This work provided a facile method for the modification of cellulose microparticles with amphiphilic properties and enhanced emulsifying capacity. Abstract:In recent years, there has been growing interest in replacing petroleum-based water-in-oil (W/O) emulsifiers with sustainable and less toxic natural materials. Pickering emulsifiers are considered well-suited candidates due to their high interfacial activity and the ability to form emulsions with long-term stability. However, only sporadic examples of natural materials have been considered as inverse Pickering emulsifiers. This study describes the synthesis of a series of hydrophobic cellulose nanospheres by bulk modification with acyl groups of different chain lengths followed by nanoprecipitation, and their application as inverse emulsifiers. Modification with acyl groups of longer chain length (C16, C18) afforded lower degrees of substitution, but resulted in greater thermal stability than groups with shorter acyl chains (C12, C14). Formation of nanospheres with low aspect ratios and narrow size distributions required low initial cellulose concentrations ( 10:1), and slow addition rates (< 20 mL/h). The modified cellulose nanospheres were able to reduce the interfacial tension between water and hexane from 45.8 mN/m to 31.1 mN/m, with an effect that increased with the number of carbons in the added acyl chains. The stearate-modified nanospheres exhibited superhydrophobic behavior, showing a contact angle of 156° ± 4° with water, and demonstrated emulsification performance comparable to the commonly used molecular surfactant sorbitan stearate. Our findings suggest that hydrophobically modified cellulose nanospheres have the potential to be a bio-derived alternative to traditional molecular W/O emulsifiers.

Abstract:A series of urethane-linked alkyl-cellulose was efficiently fabricated and served as a promising stabilizer for oil-in-oil Pickering emulsions. Oil-in-oil emulsions or nonaqueous emulsions are formulated from two immiscible organic solvents, and provide an ideal platform for water-sensitive systems such as readily hydrolyzable reagents and polymerization in anhydrous conditions. However, surfactants to stabilize nonaqueous emulsions are scarce, severely limiting their development. Herein, we report a simple and effective strategy to transform cellulosic biomass into stabilizers for nonaqueous emulsions via decorating with alkyl chains. The process involves the activation of cellulose with N , N ′-carbonyldiimidazole, followed by installing alkyl chains with different lengths via alkyl amine exchange, and the surface properties of the celluloses are finely tuned to reach a favorable state for stabilizing nonaqueous emulsions. It is demonstrated that the length of the alkyl chains significantly influences the stability and type of oil-in-oil Pickering emulsions (polar-in-nonpolar or nonpolar-in-polar), and the obtained emulsions exhibit long-term stability (even after six months). Moreover, the influences of stabilizer loadings and ratios of oil phases on the size and stability of emulsions are examined. Templated by these nonaqueous emulsions, water-sensitive thiol–isocyanate interfacial polymerizations are successfully performed to produce capsules and particles. This work proposes a simple and promising method to obtain biomass-based stabilizer for nonaqueous emulsions and thereby provides more possibilities for water-sensitive systems.

Abstract:Emulsified solid particles adsorbed at the oil–water interface can stabilise Pickering emulsions by acting as a physical barrier to the coalescence of oil droplets. Cellulose nanofibres (CNFs) have been used in food-grade Pickering emulsions because of their excellent performance as a low cost and sustainable material. Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a small-molecule zwitterion with polar functionality capable of interacting with the CNFs. The ability of cationic CNFs and NMN to co-stabilise sunflower oil Pickering emulsions was investigated under various conditions using methods such as contact angle measurement, creaming stability, rheology, microscopy, thermal stability, and water-holding capacity. Emulsions with ultra-high stability, good gelation, and high plasticity were obtained using single-step shear dispersion with 0.25 wt% CNFs, 0.05–0.3 wt% NMN, and near-neutral pH. NMN stabilised the oil–water interface through electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding with CNFs. NMN transferred into the aqueous phase and interacted with CNFs to form a complex with a three-dimensional network structure, which improved the bulk viscosity and steric hindrance of the emulsion and created more compact adsorption of CNFs at the oil–water interfaces. Overall, the synergistic effects of various factors allow NMN to effectively co-stabilise Pickering emulsions with CNFs, making it an exciting method that can be used to encapsulate oil-soluble substances.

Abstract:Abstract The aims of this study were to study the performance changes of S-CNCs (spherical cellulose nanocrystals) modified by OSA (octenyl succinic anhydride) stabilized Pickering oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and contact angle change of the MS-CNCs (modified spherical cellulose nanocrystals) prove the successful modification of OSA and the improvement of hydrophobicity. The effect of a series of MS-CNCs concentration on the volume mean diameter, emulsion ratio, stability and micro-rheological characteristic viscosity of the emulsion was studied. The results show that the emulsifying ability of the S-CNCs have been greatly improved. In addition, at a concentration of 10g/l, the volume mean diameter reaches the nanometer level (0.95 μm), and the emulsion ratio reaches 100%, while still maintaining its unique ultra-low viscosity characteristics. Furthermore, the emulsion still exhibits high-strength resistance to ionic strength, but exhibits unique responsiveness to pH (pH≤5) at special stages.
Laponite/lauric arginate stabilized AKD Pickering emulsions with shell-tunable hydrolytic resistance for use in sizing paper

Abstract:Utilizing the assembly and formation of laponite/lauric arginate (LAE) complexes near the water-oil interface, where laponite and LAE interact, the stability and preparation of alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) Pickering emulsions with tunable shells were investigated. Stable spherical emulsions were generated with homogenization due to the interfacial jamming of laponite/LAE complexes. The packing density of laponite at the oil/water interface was adjustable via LAE concentration tuning. The Pickering system with a tunable shell, droplet size, resistance to oil agglomeration and hydrolysis over a long period of time was achieved based on LAE loading. Hydrophobic paper with a 126.6° of water contact angle was prepared under a surface sizing process with the laponite/LAE-stabilized AKD emulsion loading of 0.12 wt% LAE, which exhibited 90 days' long-term storage stability. The confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) shows that laponite/LAE forms a dense layer at the oil/water interface and 3D-network in a continuous phase. The properties provided by laponite/LAE, a highly efficient complex with resistance to phase permeability and hydrolysis, open new opportunities in biodegradable and food-grade emulsifiers for paper sizing agents, where LAE achieves synergistic effects with laponite.

Stabilization of Oil-in-Water Pickering Emulsions by Surface-Functionalized Cellulose Hydrogel

Abstract:An amphiphilic cellulose (CLH) hydrogel was synthesized via grafting of quaternary ammonium groups onto cellulose. The structural properties of CLH were characterized via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)/13C solid-state NMR spectroscopy, elemental (CHN) analysis, particle size distribution (PSD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and wettability was assessed through contact angle measurements. Pickering emulsions of apolar oils in water were prepared using variable weights of the CLH hydrogel as the stabilizing agent, along with different methods of agitation (mechanical shaking and sonication). The characterization results for CLH provide support for the successful grafting of quaternary ammonium groups onto cellulose to produce hydrogels. Different methods of agitation of an oil/water mixture revealed the formation of an oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsion that was stable to coalescence for over 14 days. The resulting emulsions showed variable droplet sizes and stability according to the dosage of CLH in the emulsion and the agitation method, where the emulsion droplet size is related to the particle size of CLH. The addition of methyl orange (MO), a probe to evaluate the phase partitioning of the dye, had minor effects on the emulsion droplet size, and the emulsion prepared with 0.8 wt.% of CLH and agitated via sonication exhibited the smallest droplet size and greatest stability. This study is anticipated to catalyze further research and the development of low-cost and sustainable biopolymer hydrogels as stabilizers for tunable Pickering emulsion. Grafted cellulose materials of this type represent versatile stabilizing agents for foods, agrochemicals, and pharmaceutical products and technologies.

Sustainable and Versatile Superhydrophobic Cellulose Nanocrystals

Abstract:Paper-based materials have been widely used in packaging replacing nonbiodegradable fossil-based polymers due to the increasing concerns on environmental pollution. However, paper is hygroscopic and its mechanical strength is dramatically reduced in the presence of moisture. The current hydrophobic modification of paper via nonbiodegradable polymer coating hinders the recycling of paper. A sustainable approach was proposed to prepare superhydrophobic cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) by anchoring octadecylamine (ODA) on the surface of CNCs via the self-polymerization of tannic acid and Michael addition/Schiff base reaction between polytannic acid-coated CNCs (PTA@CNCs) and ODA. The obtained ODA–PTA@CNCs could be well dispersed in ethanol and sprayed onto different substrates to form superhydrophobic coatings, such as paper, cotton, and polyurethane. The outstanding superhydrophobicity of ODA–PTA@CNCs is attributed to the low surface energy of ODA and multiscale roughness of CNC nanorods. The promising applications of ODA–PTA@CNCs in waterproof paper-based packaging, antifouling and breathable textile, semipermeable membrane, oil–water separation, Janus paper, and actuators were demonstrated. Furthermore, the durability of superhydrophobic ODA–PTA@CNCs was confirmed by abrasion and washing tests. Overall, ODA–PTA@CNCs are promising sustainable and versatile hydrophobic coatings due to their facile preparation, biodegradability, convenience, and durability.

Some modification of cellulose nanocrystals for functional Pickering emulsions

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are negatively charged colloidal particles well known to form highly stable surfactant-free Pickering emulsions. These particles can vary in surface charge density depending on their preparation by acid hydrolysis or applying post-treatments. CNCs with three different surface charge densities were prepared corresponding to 0.08, 0.16 and 0.64 e nm −2 , respectively. Post-treatment might also increase the surface charge density. The well-known TEMPO-mediated oxidation substitutes C 6 -hydroxyl groups by C 6 -carboxyl groups on the surface. We report that these different modified CNCs lead to stable oil-in-water emulsions. TEMPO-oxidized CNC might be the basis of further modifications. It is shown that they can, for example, lead to hydrophobic CNCs with a simple method using quaternary ammonium salts that allow producing inverse water-in-oil emulsions. Different from CNC modification before emulsification, modification can be carried out on the droplets after emulsification. This way allows preparing functional capsules according to the layer-by-layer process. As a result, it is demonstrated here the large range of use of these biobased rod-like nanoparticles, extending therefore their potential use to highly sophisticated formulations. Preparation of cellulose nanocrystals from lignin-rich reject material for oil emulsification in an aqueous environment

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with amphiphilic features were used in oil drop stabilization in diesel oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion. The functionalized CNCs were synthesized from a lignin-rich reject cellulose source from the pulp and paper industry, i.e., the non-bleached fines fractions of carton pulp. Partial periodate-chlorite oxidation, which was followed by reductive butylamination, was used to obtain surface-modified amphiphilic CNCs. All studied CNCs prevented droplet coalescence by stabilizing oil droplets in the emulsion thus resulting in stable o/w Pickering-like emulsions. CNCs from the fines fractions at concentrations 0.05–0.1% (weight by weight, w/w) provided high stability against creaming (i.e., phase separation), and they did not de-emulsify at low temperatures since the oil droplet size remained small at + 5 °C at a 0.05% (w/w) CNC concentration. Salinity improved the stability against creaming with the reference chemical pulp CNC, but negatively affected the emulsion creaming rate for CNCs that had a higher level of lignin. However, the non-bleached fines fraction of the pulp may provide one potential and cost-effective raw material source for the development of a novel bio-based chemical.

Abstract:Hypothesis Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are sustainable rod-like nanoparticles that can be used to stabilize oil-in-water emulsions and can create hydrophilic coatings. Modifying the surface of CNCs can improve emulsion properties and allow for adjustable wettability. Experiments This study explores the improvement of Pickering emulsion properties for various oils and the adjustability of coated surfaces through the physical modification of CNCs, without chemical functionalization. Bio-based additives, including antioxidant tannic acid (TA), methyl cellulose (MC), and ethyl cellulose (EC) were used as surface modifiers. The identification of optimal formulations involved varying the weight fraction of the alkyl cellulose derivatives. Findings The findings suggest that, akin to pure CNCs, Pickering emulsions stabilized by TA and/or MC-modified CNCs demonstrate comparably high stability. The introduction of MC at a low weight fraction enhances hydrophilicity, and AFM analysis reveals smooth surfaces, mitigating the potential influence of roughness. In contrast, EC-modified CNCs result in less stable emulsions but exhibit more hydrophobic surfaces. This translates to a broad spectrum of characteristics, ranging from quasi-superhydrophilic to nearly hydrophobic (with contact angles spanning from below 11° up to 68°), all controllable through a straightforward physical coating process. This facile preparation of coated CNCs provides a versatile approach to customizing the wetting and emulsification properties of nanomaterials.

Abstract:As bio-based food packaging materials promise a more sustainable future, this work fabricated edible oleofilms by casting beeswax-in-water Pickering emulsions, which were formed by the physical hybrid particles of bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (BCNFs) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS) (BC/CCS). The emulsion droplet size was varied from 4 to 9 μm, and the emulsion index (EI) was all up to 100%. The obtained emulsions exhibited excellent long-term stability, and there was no change in the EI (100%) after the storage of the emulsion for 3 months. Moreover, the environmental temperature had almost no impact on the droplet size and EI of the emulsion. The mechanical properties of the oleofilms were significantly improved by enhancing the content of BC/CCS. There was also a visual reduction in the water vapor permeability (WVP) value, which was lower than 1.1 × 10-7 g·m-1·h-1·Pa-1. Furthermore, the obtained oleofilms exhibited a notable improvement in surface hydrophobicity, and surprisingly, it could be easily redispersed into water to recover back to the emulsion state without additional high energy mixing. This suggested that this edible oleofilm was prepared by a fully green method by casting Pickering emulsions stabilized by BC/CCS and could extend its application for the development of food-grade coating materials.
