Abstract:Abstract 3D printing in construction, which is a technology for printing structural buildings layer-by-layer, addresses the limitations of traditional construction methods and has advantages of reduction in labor, time, material waste, and overall cost. This paper presents a literature review of the state-of-the-art of construction using 3D printing technology. A definition and a brief history of 3D printing in construction are presented, followed by a discussion of research contributions. Subsequently, methods of pre-printing design, 3D design programs for construction, and on-site printing methods are described. Furthermore, the nature of the materials used, the properties considered for printing, and different construction mixtures used in most construction projects are discussed. Additionally, the effects of commonly used chemical admixtures on the properties of the concrete mix are reviewed. Furthermore, mixture tests to ensure compliance with the requirements and some of the challenges in the standards and regulations and some challenges faced during printing are discussed. Subsequently, successful real-world cases from various companies and controlled laboratory environments using 3D printing based on the printing method, materials used, and challenges faced by each company are considered. Finally, future recommendations for this technology to improve its capability and printing quality are presented.
