Abstract:Output power is one of the most performance indicators in Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS). It depends on wind speed status, hub height, turbine nacelle orientation, and variable pitch angle control mechanism of the turbine blade. The purpose of this article is to improve the performance of a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) based wind energy conversion system. For this reason, an uncertain and linear model of the WECS is estimated. Also, the influence of parametric uncertainty on the output power of WECS is examined, and a control method is developed. Using real-time input–output data of the WECS and MATLAB/Simulink system identification toolbox, an equivalent Auto-Regressive Moving Average (ARMAX) model structure is estimated. It is found that the parameters in the estimated model of WECS are varying with input wind speed. This affects the dynamic and steady-state performances of the DFIG-based wind turbine system. Furthermore, it caused instability in the model and impacted the output power of the wind turbine. Thus, the designed controller stabilized the WECS model and improved the output power of the generator. The proposed control strategy for the wind turbine blade pitch angle is implemented and verified on a real-time 1.5 MW DFIG-based horizontal axis wind turbine of the SANY SE7715 model used at the Adama-II wind farm of Ethiopia. The result of the study shows that the control method improved the power conversion coefficient of a wind turbine from 0.4141 to 0.5478. This is equivalent to a 32.20% improvement in the power conversion capacity of the SANY SE7715 wind turbine of the site.
