Abstract:We report a digital framework for accelerated exploration and optimization of transition metal-based homogeneous catalytic reactions through autonomous experimentation and Bayesian Optimization (BO). Specifically, we utilize a machine learning model constructed with deep neural networks for a Rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation reaction to investigate the role of BO hyperparameteres, including acquisition function and sampling size on the efficiency of reaction Pareto-Front mapping.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to accelerate the exploration and optimization of the catalyst/ligand performance in transition - metal - based homogeneous catalytic reactions through autonomous experiments and Bayesian Optimization (BO) techniques. Specifically, the research aims to: 1. **Develop a digital framework**: Construct a digital framework that can accelerate the exploration and optimization of transition - metal - based homogeneous catalytic reactions, which combines autonomous experiments and Bayesian optimization methods. 2. **Evaluate the influence of BO hyper - parameters**: Study the influence of different Bayesian optimization hyper - parameters (such as acquisition functions and sampling sizes) on the mapping efficiency of the reaction Pareto - Front. 3. **Achieve efficient mapping**: By optimizing these hyper - parameters, achieve efficient Pareto - Front mapping of the reaction condition variables for a specific catalyst/ligand system, so as to better understand the performance of the catalyst/ligand under different reaction conditions. ### Specific objectives - **Construct a machine - learning model**: Use Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) to construct a machine - learning model to simulate the rhodium - catalyzed olefin hydroformylation reaction. - **Optimize hyper - parameters**: By adjusting the hyper - parameters of Bayesian optimization, improve the accuracy of the model in simulating the reaction space in a virtual environment. - **Systematically navigate the reaction space**: Use the trained and validated machine - learning model, combined with the virtual Bayesian optimization process, to systematically navigate the reaction space in order to find the best reaction conditions. - **Evaluate different acquisition functions**: Compare the performance of four different acquisition functions (Parallel Efficient Global Optimization (qParEGO), Expected Hypervolume Improvement (qEHVI), Noisy Expected Hypervolume Improvement (qNEHVI), random sampling) in mapping the Pareto - Front. ### Research background Homogeneous catalytic reactions are of great significance in industrial processes and fine chemical synthesis, but traditional catalyst/ligand screening and development strategies often fail to fully reveal the performance of candidate ligands. Therefore, a new framework is needed to more comprehensively evaluate the performance of catalysts/ligands, reduce experimental costs, and improve the optimization efficiency of reaction conditions. ### Main contributions - **Autonomous experiment platform**: An autonomous flow reactor integrated with an online gas chromatography (GC) unit is used to generate experimental data sets. - **Pareto - Front mapping**: Systematically map the Pareto - Front of the catalyst/ligand system through Bayesian optimization techniques and identify non - dominated solutions. - **Optimization strategy**: By adjusting different hyper - parameters and acquisition functions, optimize the exploration and selection strategies of reaction conditions and improve the yield and regioselectivity of the reaction. In conclusion, this paper provides an efficient and systematic method for exploring and optimizing the catalyst/ligand performance in homogeneous catalytic reactions by combining autonomous experiments and Bayesian optimization techniques, laying the foundation for future autonomous catalytic research.
