Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors are important components in the future rollable touch screens, health care devices, electronic skins, and more. However, large-area array pressure sensors with small-size, good sensitivity, and the ability of detecting high-frequency dynamic force remain the key challenges for their practical applications. In this letter, we proposed a novel flexible piezoelectric pressure sensor system combined with a P(VDF-TrFE)/AgNWs thin film and an a-IGZO TFT. The doping of AgNWs into the P(VDF-TrFE) can improve the piezoelectric performance of P(VDF-TrFE) without high-voltage polarization and pressure stretching process, which are harmful to the performance of the TFT. With the combination of the a-IGZO TFT, this pressure sensor can be arrayed 4 $\times$ 4 in an active-matrix design with a dynamic force detecting ability (a response of 1100 mV/N), exhibiting good flexibility, fast response speed, high amplification, and lower energy consumption.

Abstract:A wearable pressure sensor is developed based on the array of polymeric piezoelectric fiber with metal core covered by beta phase polyvinylidene fluoride layer. Each fiber consists of a polyester-imide enameled copper core, a piezoelectric layer and sputtered gold electrode. Fiber array is fixed on an insulating substrate and well packaged to ensure stable work. This pressure sensor is tested to declare high sensitivity and fast response. Meanwhile, flexibility of this structure indicates its potentiality to be wearable.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have attracted much attention because of their application prospects in wearable devices, electronic skin, and health monitoring. However, it is still difficult to obtain pressure sensors with excellent performance simply and efficiently. Indium tin oxide (ITO) is a widely used transparent conductive material, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is an elastic insulating material with the advantages of easy processing and stable mechanical properties. ITO nano‐crystalline particles are dispersed into PVA polymers to form an ITO nanocrystalline‐PVA composite film with good electrical conductivity as a piezorestoresistive material, fabricating a pressure sensor with excellent performance. The pressure sensor possesses superior sensitivity (641.15 kPa−1), wide detection range (0–80 kPa), fast response time (10.93 ms), and recovery time (8.05 ms), and excellent stability (more than 1500 cycles). The pressure sensor shows excellent performance in a variety of applications, such as pulse testing, speech recognition, and detection of various joint movements of the human body (such as knees, fingers, elbows, etc.). The sensor has application prospects in health monitoring and motion perception.
Polyelectrolyte Dielectrics for Flexible Low‐Voltage Organic Thin‐Film Transistors in Highly Sensitive Pressure Sensing

Abstract:Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) can provide an effective platform to develop flexible pressure sensors in wearable electronics due to their good signal amplification function. However, it is particularly difficult to realize OTFT-based pressure sensors with both low-voltage operation and high sensitivity. Here, controllable polyelectrolyte composites based on poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) are developed as a type of high-capacitance dielectrics for flexible OTFTs and ultrasensitive pressure sensors with sub-1 V operation. Flexible OTFTs using the PAA:PEG dielectrics show good universality and greatly enhanced electrical performance under a much smaller operating voltage of -0.7 V than those with a pristine PAA dielectric. The low-voltage OTFTs also exhibit excellent flexibility and bending stability under various bending radii and long cycles. Flexible OTFT-based pressure sensors with low-voltage operation and superhigh sensitivity are demonstrated by using a suspended semiconductor/dielectric/gate structure in combination with the PAA:PEG dielectric. The sensors deliver a record high sensitivity of 452.7 kPa(-1) under a low-voltage of -0.7 V, and excellent operating stability over 5000 cycles. The OTFT sensors can be built into a wearable sensor array for spatial pressure mapping, which shows a bright potential in flexible electronics such as wearable devices and smart skins.

Abstract:At present, the challenge of high-performance flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors remains the combination of high sensitivity and a wide monitoring range. The micro-morphological engineering of sensing materials will greatly contribute to the design and development of flexible piezoresistive sensors. Therefore, a flexible piezoresistive sensor based on a multi-layer interlocking "sandwich" structure was developed. The structure is assembled from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/carbon nanotube (CNT) films with microdome arrays and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/Ti3C2Tx MXene nanofiber films. The multi-layer interlocking structure not only significantly increases the contact area and sensitivity between layers, but also greatly improves mechanical and electrical stability. The results show that the PDMS/CNT-TPU/MXene pressure sensor has a high sensitivity of 82.17 kPa-1, a wide pressure detection range of 0 ~ 25 kPa, an extremely short response and recovery time of 100 ms, and an excellent dynamic cycling stability of more than 2000 cycles. In addition, the sensor has been used to perform comprehensive human motion monitoring, such as joint flexion, gait monitoring, and gesture recognition, demonstrating its potential for applications in health monitoring, wearable devices, and human-computer interaction.

Abstract:Flexible electronics show wide application prospects in electronic skin, health monitoring, and human–machine interfacing. As an essential part of flexible electronics, flexible pressure sensors have become a compelling subject of academic research. There is an urgent need to develop piezoelectric sensors with high sensitivity and stability. In this work, the high flexibility of polylactic acid (PLA) film and the excellent ferroelectric properties and high dielectric constant of tetragonal barium titanate (BTO) led to their use as filling materials to fabricate flexible piezoelectric composite films by spinning coating. PLA is used to produce flexible binding substrates, and BTO is added to the composite to enhance its electrical output by improving its piezoelectric performance. The peak output voltage of the PLA/BTO tetragonal piezoelectric film is 22.57 V, and the maximum short-circuit current was 3041 nA. Durability tests showed that during 40,000 s of continuous operation, in the range of 15~120 kPa, the linear relationship between pressure and the film was excellent, the sensitivity for the output voltage is 0.176 V/kPa, and the output current is 27.77 nA/kPa. The piezoelectric pressure sensor (PPS) also enables accurate motion detection, and the extensive capabilities of the PENG highlight its potential in advancing motion sensing and human–computer interactions.

Abstract:<p>The construction of flexible all-polymer-based conductive aerogels for piezoresistive pressure sensors is often hindered by a trade-off between robust mechanical properties and elastic-responsive conductivity. Here, a highly flexible and compressible conductive aerogel was fabricated by integrating poly(3,4-thylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) with polyimide (PI) through facile strategies of freeze-drying and thermal annealing. With a controlled ratio of the two components, the composite demonstrates a well-ordered and interconnected porous structure composed of "<em>layer-strut</em>" skeletons with linked fibrils. Benefiting from the unique structure and synergistic effects between the two polymers, the PEDOT:PSS/PI aerogel exhibits excellent compressibility, stable and linear piezoresistive responses at various compressive strains and good reproducibility over 200 cycles. Furthermore, the hybrid can retain good compression sensitivity and durable stability in severe environments, such as at high and low temperatures and under acidic conditions, demonstrating its great potential for a wide range of pressure sensor applications in harsh environments.</p>

Abstract:Flexible, semitransparent ionic liquid gel (ionogels) film was first fabricated by in situ polymerization. The optimized ionogels exhibited excellent mechanical properties, high conductivity, and force sensing characteristics. The multifunctional sensor based on the ionogel film was constructed and provided the high sensitivity of 15.4 kPa-1 and wide detection range sensing from 5 Pa to 5 kPa. Moreover, the aforementioned sensor demonstrated excellent mechanical stability against repeated external deformations (for 3000 cycles under 90° bending). Importantly, the sensor showed advantages in detection of environmental changes to the external stimulus of subtle signals, including a rubber blower blowing the sensor, gently touching, torsion, and bending.

Abstract:In the area of flexible electronics, pressure sensors are a widely utilized variety of flexible electronics that are both indispensable and prevalent. The importance of pressure sensors in various fields is currently increasing, leading to the exploration of materials with unique structural and piezoelectric properties. Perovskite-based materials are ideal for use as flexible pressure sensors (FPSs) due to their flexibility, chemical composition, strain tolerance, high piezoelectric and piezoresistive properties, and potential integration with other technologies. This article presents a comprehensive study of perovskite-based materials used in FPSs and discusses their components, performance, and applications in detecting human movement, electronic skin, and wireless monitoring. This work also discusses challenges like material instability, durability, and toxicity, the limited widespread application due to environmental factors and toxicity concerns, and complex fabrication and future directions for perovskite-based FPSs, providing valuable insights for researchers in structural health monitoring, physical health monitoring, and industrial applications.

Abstract:Recently, flexible pressure sensors rooting in piezoresistive mechanism have gained immense popularity due to their excellent application potential in the fields of software robotics, electronic skins and human health monitoring, etc. However, the trade-off between sensitivity and pressure range still remains challenging for the wide application of piezoresistive sensors. Herein, a novel flexible pressure sensor constructing from electrospun ionic liquids/Multi-walled carbon nanotubes/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (ILs/MWCNTs/PVDF) ternary composite that permits high-sensitivity detection over broad pressure range is implemented. Benefitting from the filamentous porous network coupled with urchin-shaped beads, the newly developed active ternary composite showed excellent compressibility and high sensitivity to pressure, endowing the resultant piezoresistive sensor with broad-pressure detection ranging from 1.0 Pa to 307 kPa with a maximum sensitivity of 0.075 kPa −1 . Simultaneously, the proposed sensor present fast response/recovery time of 120/80 ms and high operation stability over 14000 cyclic pressings. Also, the feasibility of sensor in effectively monitoring various physiological signals, recognizing keyboards and expressing spatial pressure distribution is demonstrated, implying their great potential as viable high-performance pressure sensor.

Abstract:The demand for flexible pressure sensors in wearable devices is dramatically increasing. However, challenges still exist in making flexible pressure sensors, including complex or costly fabrication processes and difficulty in mass production. In this paper, a new method is proposed for preparing the flexible pressure sensors that combines an imprinting technique with blade-coating of a graphene–silver nanosheet–polymer nanocomposite. The piezo-resistive type flexible pressure sensor consists of interdigital electrodes and nanocomposite as a sensing layer, as well as a micropillar array structure. The morphology of the sensitive layer of the sensor is characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The response performance, sensitivity, and stability of the sensor are investigated. The test results show that the initial resistance of the pressure sensor is only 1.6 Ω, the sensitivity is 0.04 kPa−1, and the response time is about 286 ms. In addition, a highly hydrophobic wetting property can be observed on the functional structure surface of the sensor. The contact angle is 137.2 degrees, revealing the self-cleaning property of the sensor. Finally, the prepared sensor is demonstrated as a wearable device, indicating promising potential in practical applications.

Abstract:Highly sensitive flexible pressure sensors have been extensively studied due to their promising applications in many fields. Various sensing mechanisms have been proposed to convert pressure into a readable electrical signal, among which piezocapacitive presents advantages due to its simple structure and convenient integration. The modification of the dielectric layer composing these sensors is a common strategy to improve their sensing performance. In this paper, we propose the fabrication of a novel capacitive-based flexible pressure sensor with honeycomb-like microarchitecture by using femtosecond laser filament based far-field technique. The fabricated flexible sensing device is assembled face-to-face with two layers of micro-structured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) thin films that is duplicated from laser filament-processed silicon mold. The as-prepared flexible sensor features excellent sensing performance with high reliability, and enables detection of multi-modal signals, including pressure, proximity, and bending. Owing to the advantages mentioned above, the obtained flexible pressure sensor can be attached on non-planar human skin to monitor the physiological signals as well as joint deformation during exercise, revealing it great application potential in cutting-edge fields, such as robotic tactility.

Abstract:To enable the design of more intuitive product user interfaces, the prospects of matching piezoelectric touch sensors with flexible organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology are investigated. Low stiffness piezoelectric composite sensors, combining piezoelectric Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 powder with a polymer matrix, are prepared and compared to existing ceramic and polymer sensors. The piezoelectric sensitivity per stiffness of these piezoelectric composites can be tailored by adapting the polymer matrix to the stiffness required by the OLED, while retaining a relatively high sensitivity. Concurrently, the relatively low energy output of these flexible piezoelectric sensors can be increased through optimized sensor design.

Abstract:Flexible and wearable devices have been gaining attention in recent years. Compared with other types of pressure sensors, capacitive pressure sensors provide more advantages including simple structure, high stability and reliability, and lower power consumption. This study proposed the flexible capacitive pressure sensors with a double dielectric layer of a porous micro-pillar composite structure of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the dielectric layer. To further enhance the sensitivity, barium titanate (BT) particles were mixed in the PDMS due to their high relative permittivity. Moreover, finite element analysis (FEA) was utilized to simulate the displacement of the dielectric layer under applying external pressure. The FEA simulation results showed that the proposed structure of the dielectric layer could effectively enhance the sensitivity of the flexible capacitive pressure sensor. Furthermore, the flexible capacitive pressure sensor demonstrates a superb performance with a high sensitivity of 7.847 kPa−1, a low detection limit of 0.21 Pa, and a fast response and release time of 20 ms and 25 ms. The developed sensors have an excellent sensing capability and can be applied widely for monitoring of heartbeat, sensing of the robot arm, measuring of floor height, detecting of weights of objects, and real-time monitoring of healthcare.

Abstract:Linear piezoelectric materials offer new opportunities for next-generation multifunctional micro/nano systems on chip aside from ferroelectrics. However, the advantage of quantitative pressure sensing of linear piezoelectric materials over ferroelectrics has not been demonstrated, while the thermal stability of linear piezoelectric zinc oxide (ZnO) is yet to be evaluated. In this work, pressure sensors based on linear piezoelectric undoped ZnO and ferroelectric vanadium doped ZnO (V-ZnO) films are studied side by side. Both films possess similar fiber textures oriented along the polar ZnO [0 0 2] direction, yet each of the V-ZnO grains consists of strip-like domains observed by SEM. Applying triangular-wave pressures, the linear piezoelectric ZnO sensor generates triangular-wave voltage signals that are one-to-one linearly correlated to the applied pressure, showing decisive advantages for quantitative pressure sensing compared to the 'sail-like' voltage signals of the ferroelectric V-ZnO sensor that is many-to-one correlated to the applied pressure. Superior thermal stability is demonstrated in the linear piezoelectric ZnO sensor showing stable pressure sensing properties up to 450 °C compared to the degraded sensing properties of the ferroelectric V-ZnO sensor at 150 °C. The thermally stable piezoelectric sensors for quantitative pressure sensing based on linear piezoelectric ZnO films serve as candidates for high-performance multifunctional micro/nano systems.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have been widely used in health detection, robot sensing, and shape recognition. The micro-engineered design of the intermediate dielectric layer (IDL) has proven to be an effective way to optimize the performance of flexible pressure sensors. Nevertheless, the performance development of flexible pressure sensors is limited due to cost and process difficulty, prepared by inverted mold lithography. In this work, microstructured arrays printed by aerosol printing act as the IDL of the sensor. It is a facile way to prepare flexible pressure sensors with high performance, simplified processes, and reduced cost. Simultaneously, the effects of microstructure size, PDMS/MWCNTs film, microstructure height, and distance between the microstructures on the sensitivity and response time of the sensor are studied. When the microstructure size, height, and distance are 250 μm, 50 μm, and 400 μm, respectively, the sensor shows a sensitivity of 0.172 kPa−1 with a response time of 98.2 ms and a relaxation time of 111.4 ms. Studies have proven that the microstructured dielectric layer printed by aerosol printing could replace the inverted mold technology. Additionally, applications of the designed sensor are tested, such as the finger pressing test, elbow bending test, and human squatting test, which show good performance.

Abstract:The rapid advances in intelligence terminal devices have raised expectations for highly sensitive, reliable and flexible pressure sensor. Herein, we present a highly sensitive flexible pressure sensor based on piezoelectric MXene/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hybrid film. Making use of MXene nanosheet reinforcement, one can efficiently promote the piezoelectric output and consequently sensitivity of PVDF. For instance, upon a small loading of 0.4 wt%, the piezoelectric coefficient d33 of MXene/PVDF hybrid film reaches the peak of 43 pC/N. Meanwhile, the incorporation of MXene nanosheet is advantageous to strengthen the mechanical performance of PVDF. With the excellent piezoelectric response and mechanical property, the MXene/PVDF hybrid film sensor demonstrates to perform superior voltage sensitivity up to 0.0480 V/N, which is double that of PVDF based sensor. Meanwhile, the novel hybrid film sensor also exhibits fast recovery time of 3.1 ms and stable operation capability under cyclic force, confirming their applicability as reliable pressure sensor.

Abstract:Wearable devices impose stringent demands on sensor materials, structural processes, material costs, wearability, and operational performance. This study developed an innovative sandwich-structured flexible piezoelectric sensor fabricated using ionic conductive hydrogel and PVDF film. The fabrication process involved the preparation of ionic conductive PVA/gelatin double-network hydrogel (CPGH) through a freeze-thaw cycle and saltwater immersion process. The sandwich structure was developed using a CPGH and PVDF film, which effectively enhanced the deformation capacity of the PVDF film, stress concentration, and internal polarization intensity. Test results indicated that the proposed sensor can generate linear output and has higher sensitivity, short response times, robust stability, and reliability. The sensor can be used to monitor the bending angle of finger joints, displaying an impressive linear fit with a coefficient of determination ( ) of 0.97538 within the range of 30° to 135°. Furthermore, the sensor has potential in other applications, which involve distinguishing different human gait patterns.

Abstract:The flexible piezoelectric pressure sensors are fabricated by using Sb nanosheets/BaTiO3 nanoparticles/P(VDF‐TrFE) ternary flexible nanofiber mat. A high sensitivity of 96 mV kPa−1 and 2 ms ultra‐fast response time are achieved in the newly designed sensor. The boosting sensing performance is attributed to the interfacial polarization at the inorganic filler‐organic interface. Flexible piezoelectric pressure sensors (FPPS) received a lot of attention because of their prominent performance in body motion detection and energy recovery. However, it has faced a huge challenge in manufacturing FPPS with high sensitivity, low cost, and high flexibility. Herein, a ternary flexible nanofiber composite with Sb nanosheets and BaTiO3 nanoparticles as the fillers of P(VDF‐TrFE) is prepared by electrospinning. An impressive open‐circuit voltage of 17.1 V and short‐circuit current of 4.4 μA is obtained based on the composite nanofiber mat at a pressure of 128 kPa with 2 Hz frequency. The FPPS not only exhibit a high sensitivity of 96 mV kPa−1 but also an ultrafast response time of 2 ms. Excellent flexibility and reliability are demonstrated by the unchanged open‐circuit voltage after 2400 cycles. The enhanced FPPS performance is owed to the interfacial polarization effect at the inorganic filler‐organic matrix interface, which also enhances the ferroelectric and dielectric properties. The present FPPS is further confirmed to be a real‐time motion monitor and voice recognizer, which can distinguish various actions and sounds according to distinct output voltage signals and is expected to be used in virtual reality devices, robotic electronic skin, haptic simulation, artificial throat, etc.
