Abstract:We prove that mean multiplicities in the length spectrum of a non-compact arithmetic hyperbolic orbifold of dimension $n \geqslant 4$ have exponential growth rate $$ \langle g(L) \rangle \geqslant c \frac{e^{([n/2] - 1)L}}{L^{1 + \delta_{5, 7}(n) }}, $$ extending the analogous result for even dimensions of Belolipetsky, Lalín, Murillo and Thompson. Our proof is based on the study of (square-rootable) Salem numbers. As a counterpart, we also prove an asymptotic formula for the distribution of square-rootable Salem numbers by adapting the argument of Götze and Gusakova. It shows that one can not obtain a better estimate on mean multiplicities using our approach.

Abstract:In 1992, Reid asked whether hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same geodesic length spectra are necessarily commensurable. While this is known to be true for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds, the non-arithmetic case is still open. Building towards a negative answer to this question, Futer and Millichap recently constructed infinitely many pairs of non-commensurable, non-arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have the same volume and whose length spectra begin with the same first $m$ geodesic lengths. In the present paper, we show that this phenomenon is surprisingly common in the arithmetic setting. In particular, given any arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifold derived from a quaternion algebra, any finite subset $S$ of its geodesic length spectrum, and any $k \geq 2$, we produce infinitely many $k$-tuples of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-orbifolds which are pairwise non-commensurable, have geodesic length spectra containing $S$, and have volumes lying in an interval of (universally) bounded length. The main technical ingredient in our proof is a bounded gaps result for prime ideals in number fields lying in Chebotarev sets which extends recent work of Thorner.

Multiplicity results for elliptic problems with critical exponential growth

Abstract:We prove new multiplicity results for some elliptic problems with critical exponential growth. More specifically, we show that the problems considered here have arbitrarily many solutions for all sufficiently large values of a certain parameter $\mu > 0$. In particular, the number of solutions goes to infinity as $\mu \to \infty$. The proof is based on an abstract critical point theorem.

Abstract:We show that for any natural number $n$ satisfying $n\equiv 4 \mod 8$ and $n\not\equiv 0 \mod 5$, and for any odd integer $t\geq \frac{n+6}{2}$ there are infinitely many Salem numbers ${\alpha}$ of degree $2t$ such that ${\alpha}^n-1$ is a unit. This result, obtained using a generalization of a construction due to Gross and McMullen [5], partially completes the main result of [7].

Abstract:We study multiplicities of jumping numbers of multiplier ideals in a smooth variety of arbitrary dimension. We prove that the multiplicity function is a quasi-polynomial, hence proving that the Poincaré series is a rational function. We further study when the various components of the quasi-polynomial have the highest possible degree and relate it to jumping numbers contributed by Rees valuations. Finally, we study the special case of monomial ideals.

Abstract:We provide a necessary and sufficient condition under which the set defined by a Möbius transformation of positive integers is a set of multiplicative recurrence. A Khinchin-type lower bound is also established. This not only answers a question of Donoso--Le--Moreira--Sun but also strengthens their result. The key input in our proof is Tao's logarithmically averaged correlations of non-pretentious multiplicative functions.

Abstract:We prove several rigidity results on multiplier and length spectrum. For example, we show that for every non-exceptional rational map $f:\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C})\to\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C})$ of degree $d\geq2$, the $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space generated by the characteristic exponents (that are not $-\infty$) of periodic points of $f$ has infinite dimension. This answers a stronger version of a question of Levy and Tucker. Our result can also be seen as a generalization of recent results of Ji-Xie and of Huguin which proved Milnor's conjecture about rational maps having integer multipliers. We also get a characterization of postcritically finite maps by using its length spectrum. Finally as an application of our result, we get a new proof of the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for endomorphisms on $(\mathbb{P}^1)^N, N\geq 1$.

Abstract:We study the multiplier ideals and the corresponding jumping numbers and multiplicities $\{m(c)\}_{c\in \mathbb{R}}$ in the following context: $(X,o)$ is a complex analytic normal surface singularity, ${\mathfrak a}\subset \mathcal{O}_{X,o}$ is an ${\mathfrak m}_{X,o}$--primary ideal, $\phi:\widetilde{X}\to X$ is a log resolution of $\mathfrak{a}$ such that $\mathfrak{a}\mathcal{O}_{\widetilde{X}}=\mathcal{O}_{\widetilde{X}}(-F)$, for some nonzero effective divisor $F$ supported on $\phi^{-1}(0)$. We show that $\{m(c)\}_{c>0}$ is combinatorially computable from $F$ and the resolution graph $\Gamma$ of $\phi$, and we provide several formulae. We also extend Budur's result (valid for $(X,o)=(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$), which makes an identification of $\sum_{c\in[0,1]}m(c)t^c$ with a certain Hodge spectrum. In our general case we use Hodge spectrum with coefficients in a mixed Hodge module. We show that $\{m(c)\}_{c\leq 0}$ usually depends on the analytic type of $(X,o)$. However, for some distinguished analytic types we determine it concretely. E.g., when $(X,o)$ is weighted homogeneous (and $F$ is associated with the central vertex), we recover $\sum_cm(c)t^c$ from the Poincaré series of $(X,o)$ and when $(X,o)$ is a splice quotient then we recover $\sum_cm(c)t^c$ from the multivariable topological Poincaré (zeta) function of $\Gamma$.

A Non-Trivial Minoration for the Set of Salem Numbers

Abstract:The set of Salem numbers is proved to be bounded from below by $\theta_{31}^{-1}= 1.08544\ldots$ where $\theta_{n}$, $ n \geq 2$, is the unique root in $(0,1)$ of the trinomial $-1+x+x^n$. Lehmer's number $1.176280\ldots$ belongs to the interval $(\theta_{12}^{-1}, \theta_{11}^{-1})$. We conjecture that there is no Salem number in $(\theta_{31}^{-1}, \theta_{12}^{-1}) = (1.08544\ldots, 1.17295\ldots)$. For proving the Main Theorem, the algebraic and analytic properties of the dynamical zeta function of the Rényi-Parry numeration system are used, with real bases running over the set of real reciprocal algebraic integers, and variable tending to 1.

Abstract:Roughly speaking, the spectrum of multiplicative functions is the set of all possible mean values. In this paper, we are interested in the spectra of multiplicative functions supported over powerful numbers. We prove that its real logarithmic spectrum takes values from $- \sqrt{2} / (4 + \sqrt{2}) = -0.26160...$ to $1$ while it is known that the logarithmic spectrum of real multiplicative functions over all natural numbers takes values from $0$ to $1$. In the course of this study, we correct a proof of Granville and Soundararajan concerning contribution of small primes in the study of mean value of multiplicative functions.

Transcendence of ${}_3F_2(1)$ Hypergeometric Series and $L$-values of Modular Forms

Abstract:We examine the families of hypergeometric series associated to a special class of modular hypergeometric Galois representations recently studied by Allen, Grove, Long, and Tu. The underlying motives allow us to express a special $L$-value of the corresponding modular form in terms of these hypergeometric series. We use extra symmetries coming from the underlying modular forms to study the transcendence of families of periods, which have the form ${}_3F_2(1)$, on hypergeometric surfaces. For several hypergeometric surfaces with four periods, we show that the vector space generated by these elements has dimension at most 2. As an application of our results, we utilize a classical formula of ${}_3F_2(1)$ series due to Kummer to find relations between $L$-values of modular forms that differ by an even twist, as predicted in a theorem of Shimura.

Abstract:We regard the classic Thue–Morse diffraction measure as an equilibrium measure for a potential function with a logarithmic singularity over the doubling map. Our focus is on unusually fast scaling of the Birkhoff sums (superlinear) and of the local measure decay (superpolynomial). For several scaling functions, we show that points with this behavior are abundant in the sense of full Hausdorff dimension. At the fastest possible scaling, the corresponding rates reveal several remarkable phenomena. There is a gap between level sets for dyadic rationals and non-dyadic points, and beyond dyadic rationals, non-zero accumulation points occur only within intervals of positive length. The dependence between the smallest and the largest accumulation point also manifests itself in a non-trivial joint dimension spectrum.

Abstract:In this short note we observe, on locally symmetric spaces of higher rank, a connection between the growth indicator function introduced by Quint and the modified critical exponent of the Poincaré series equipped with the polyhedral distance. As a consequence, we provide a different characterization of the bottom of the $L^2$-spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in terms of the growth indicator function. Moreover, we explore the relationship between these three objects and the temperedness.

Abstract:There are well-known analogs of the prime number theorem and Mertens' theorem for dynamical systems with hyperbolic behaviour. Here we consider the same question for the simplest non-hyperbolic algebraic systems. The asymptotic behaviour of the orbit-counting function is governed by a rotation on an associated compact group, and in simple examples we exhibit uncountably many different asymptotic growth rates for the orbit-counting function. Mertens' Theorem also holds in this setting, with an explicit rational leading coefficient obtained from arithmetic properties of the non-hyperbolic eigendirections.

Abstract:We exhibit closed hyperbolic surfaces of genus $10$ and $17$ such that the multiplicity of the first nonzero eigenvalue of their Laplacian is larger than the maximum conjectured by Yves Colin de Verdière in 1986. In order to determine these multiplicities, we apply the twisted Selberg trace formula to the representations induced by the isometry groups of these surfaces on corresponding triangle groups.
