Abstract:Sportswear manufactured from hygroscopic fibres can absorb moisture during activity or intermittent exercise and may change the thermal management of clothing. This change in the thermal behaviour of the fabric can lead to buffer the post-exercise chill. During activity in a moderately cold environment clothing made of 100% wool fibre helps wearers to slow down evaporative and conductive cooling, which can provide more thermal and comfort sensation compared to 100% cotton, 100% viscose, and 100% polyester. Twelve males performed cycling in a controlled climate chamber of temperature: 15 ± 0.5 °C, and relative humidity (RH):50 ± 5% followed by a drying phase in a windy environment by wearing full-sleeve t-shirts. Wool shirt was observed to hold a greater torso skin temperature (p < 0.05) than the other fibre types. Participants were asked a range of comfort-related questions at varying intervals. The temperature sensation was found (p < 0.05) significant for wool clothing. Moreover, participants rated wool shirt significantly (p < 0.05) as more comfortable during the post-exercise phase.
Differences in wearer response to garments for outdoor activity

Abstract:The performance of garments for outdoor activity was compared. Three fabrics, each in garments for the upper body, matched garment/wearer dimensions, were worn by 10 athletically 'well-trained' males under controlled conditions (hot 32 +/- 2 degrees C, 20 +/- 2% relative humidity (RH); cold 8 +/- 2 degrees C, 40 +/- 2% RH) with physical (instrumental) and sensory responses obtained during the trials. Differences in human responses to the fabrics/garments included heart rate, core temperature during run (hot, cold), rest (hot) and walk (cold), heat content of the body, humidity under garments during rest and run and time to onset of sweating. No such differences were identified for change in body mass, core temperature during walk (hot) and rest (cold), skin temperature, temperature of skin covered by the garment, humidity under the garments during walk or for any perceptions (thermal sensations, thermal comfort of torso, exertion, wetness). The garment in single jersey wool fabric performed best in both hot and cold conditions. Effects of garments on wearers are often related to properties of the fabrics from which the garments are made. This study shows that only some differences in fabric properties result in measurable thermophysiological and perceptual responses of the garment wearers and underlines the difficulty in predicting performance of garments/persons from laboratory tests on fabrics.
Thermophysiological Effect of Clothing Temperature Control in Cold Environment During Exercise

Abstract:This paper reports a study on effect of temperature control in design of cold protective clothing. In this research, eleven young male subjects volunteered to take part in wear trial experiments. Two kinds clothing systems were tested. Both clothing systems were treated with phase change material. One clothing was smart clothing (clothing C), the other one was intelligent thermal protective clothing (clothing D). There was a heating system installed in clothing D. All experiments were conducted in a climate chamber where temperature was controlled on -15 degrees C. The experimental results showed the skin temperature when subjects wore clothing D was higher than that when subjects wore clothing C. In the whole experimental process, the absolute humidity of skin surface when subjects wore clothing D was lower than that subjects wore clothing C. Subjects wearing clothing D felt drier and warmer than wearing clothing C. These results showed that temperature control could significantly improve the temperature and decrease the absolute humidity of the microclimate, make subjects more comfortable in the cold environment.
Transient thermal comfort and physiological responses following a step change in activity status under summer indoor environments

Abstract:People always experience changes in their daily activities. However, previous dynamic thermal comfort studies have focused on the changes in environmental parameters. Transient subjective and physiological responses following a step change in the activity status have rarely been addressed. To address this, 21 healthy male subjects dressed at 0.5 clo underwent three sessions: sitting for 15 min, walking for 20 min, and sitting for 20 min under three typical summer indoor conditions (operative temperatures (Top) and relative humidity: 23 °C and 60 %, 26 °C and 50 %, and 29 °C and 40 %). There were two walking speeds: 2 and 4 km/h. In addition to subjective votes, physiological parameters such as metabolic rate, skin temperature, and skin wettedness were investigated. The variations in the rate of heat loss from the skin, the rate of heat storage (S), and the core temperature were analysed using the JOS-3 model. The results showed that S was above zero while walking because of the delay in sweating. The heat storage took more than 20 min to dissipate at a typical summer indoor Top (23–29 °C) after experiencing moderate activity intensities (2.2–3.4 met). People were more sensitive to changes in core temperature during the downstep of activity than during the upstep of activity. The findings from this study revealed patterns of change in thermal comfort following a step change in activity status, which can be used to expand the theory of dynamic thermal comfort.

Abstract:Extremely cold weather frequently occurs worldwide, increasing the risk of exposure to extremely cold environments, particularly for outdoor workers. Cold stress can significantly reduce work performance and impair workers' health and safety. However, few studies have focused on the thermal comfort characteristics and heating demands of people involved in different activities during extremely cold exposure. Herein, 18 male subjects were recruited to perform different activities in a cryogenic chamber with an ambient temperature of −14.0 °C. They underwent 15 min of standing adaptation, 40 min of heating and 15 min of standing recovery. During the heating phase, they experienced four activity status with adjustable heated garments switched on: standing, continuous 4 km/h and 6 km/h walking, and intermittent 4 km/h walking. Variations in subjective perception, physiological responses and heating parameters over time were recorded throughout the experiments. The thermal sensation zone corresponding to thermal comfort shifted and expanded towards the warm side, which may be attributed to local cold exposure. Subjective feedback and self-adjustment were combined to quantify heating demands. Thermal comfort and energy savings were simultaneously considered when determining the heating demand. The comfortable temperature inside the clothes for standing was 23.5–32.9 °C, and active heating was not required for walking at 6 km/h. The actual heating demand decreased with increasing activity intensity and was much lower than the commercially heated garments provided. Heating strategies for different activity status were recommended to guide the design of personal comfort systems.

Effect of base layer materials on physiological and perceptual responses to exercise in personal protective equipment

Abstract:Ten men (non-firefighters) completed a 110 min walking/recovery protocol (three 20-min exercise bouts, with recovery periods of 10, 20, and 20 min following successive bouts) in a thermoneutral laboratory while wearing firefighting personal protective equipment over one of four base layers: cotton, modacrylic, wool, and phase change material. There were no significant differences in changes in heart rate, core temperature, rating of perceived exertion, thermal discomfort, and thermal strain among base layers. Sticking to skin, coolness/hotness, and clothing humidity sensation were more favorable (p < 0.05) for wool compared with cotton; no significant differences were identified for the other 7 clothing sensations assessed. Separate materials performance testing of the individual base layers and firefighting ensembles (base layer + turnout gear) indicated differences in thermal protective performance and total heat loss among the base layers and among ensembles; however, differences in heat dissipation did not correspond with physiological responses during exercise or recovery.
Effects of two cooling garments on post-exercise thermal comfort of female subjects in the heat

Abstract:The purpose of the study was to investigate and compare the effect of two cooling garments with phase change material (PCM) and ventilation on thermal comfort. Eight female university students (age 24±1 years; height 162±4 cm; body weight 54±4 kg) exercised on a treadmill in an environment of 32 ℃ with 50 % relative humidity. Tests in three conditions were carried out after moderate exercise with t-shirt and shorts: cooling with a PCM vest (PCM); cooling with a ventilation jacket (VEN) and without cooling clothing (natural cooling, a control condition, CON). Results showed that no significant differences were observed in the mean skin temperature and heart rate among the two cooling garment conditions and the control condition (p>0.05). The local torso skin temperature was observed with significant difference among the three conditions (p<0.05) and it was mostly reduced by 0.7 ℃ and 0.9 ℃, respectively in PCM and VEN. Significant differences were observed in the clothing torso micro-climate temperature and humidity among the three testing scenarios (p<0.05). The clothing micro-climate temperature was dropped by 2 ℃ in PCM and 0.8 ℃ in VEN. The clothing micro-climate humidity in PCM was 40 % higher than that in VEN after 30 minutes cooling. The perceived thermal sensation was the lowest in PCM whereas the perceived skin wettedness sensation was the lowest in VEN.

Abstract:A human physiological study was performed to verify the claim that the structure of a layer, without a change in the component materials, can reduce condensation in a multilayered cold weather clothing ensemble. Two five-layered clothing ensembles were constructed using different array types: an all-separated type and a combined type in which the final insulating layer was mechanically attached to a jacket without an air gap. The materials in the two arrays were identical and 100% polyester. The results showed that the combined type produced significantly less sweat (33.8%), displayed 31.3% improved vapor permeability, and had 25.0% lower sweat accumulation compared to the separated type ( p < 0.05). Following exercise, the all-separated type displayed up to a 74% greater cooling rate of skin temperature compared to the combined-type ensemble. There was a tendency to note a warmer, drier, and less clammy condition in the combined clothing ensemble by participants. The results were in good agreement with the simulator results, and suggest that an appropriate layer arrangement, in addition to material selection, should be considered for the design of novel functional clothing for cold conditions.

Abstract:People working in cold regions often need to move frequently between indoor and outdoor environments. Due to sex differences in metabolic rates and thermal sensitivity, repeated exposure to large temperature differences may stress physiological and perceptual systems of males and females differently. This study aims to explore the physiological responses and thermal perception changes in males and females repeatedly exposed to −15 °C. The experiment involved 20 participants (gender balanced), who experienced two consecutive cycles of cold exposure. Each cycle included 30 min of cold exposure and 30 min of recovery. During the experiment, multiple physiological parameters as well as overall and local thermal perception were recorded. The experimental results indicate that repeated cold exposure can lead to thermal habituation in both males and females. Males exhibited higher skin temperatures in extremities such as the hands, fingers, face, and feet, while females reported lower thermal sensations in these areas during the recovery period. Furthermore, repeated cold exposure has a greater impact on the rate of recovery of extremity skin temperatures in females, requiring a longer recovery time compared to males. This article has reference value for considering sex differences in the design of temporary transition spaces in winter, which is beneficial to improving thermal comfort and energy efficiency.

Abstract:Purpose The paper aims to investigate thermal comfort properties, such as heat and moisture transmission through male business clothing systems, by using a sweating thermal manikin Coppelius that simulates heat and moisture production in a similar way to the human body and measures the influence of clothing on heat exchange in different environmental and sweating conditions. Design/methodology/approach Ten different combination of male business clothing systems were measured using the sweating manikin, under three environmental conditions (10°C/50 per cent RH, 25°C/50 per cent RH and −5°C), and at 0 and 50 gm −2 h −1 sweating levels, in order to evaluate the influence of environmental and sweating conditions on thermal comfort properties of clothing systems. Findings The results show how business clothing systems influence on the dry and evaporative heat loss between the manikin surface and environment in different environmental and sweating conditions. Practical implications When using sweating thermal manikin Coppelius, water vapour transmission (WVT) through and water condensation on the clothing can be determined simultaneously with the thermal insulation ( I t ) of clothing system. Measured thermal comfort properties of clothing systems evaluated with a sweating thermal manikin can provide valuable information for the clothing industry by manufacturing/designing new clothing systems. Originality/value In this investigation, the heat and moisture transmission properties of male business clothing systems were measured in different environmental and sweating conditions. In the past few years, clothing materials containing microencapsulated phase‐change materials (PCMs) have appeared in outdoor garments, particularly sportswear; therefore, we decided to investigate the thermal comfort properties of different standard male business apparel, as well as male business clothing that contain PCMs used as liner and outerwear material.

Abstract:Objectives. This study explores the effects of temperature steps on thermal responses to understand abrupt temperature shifts faced by heat-exposed workers during winter. Methods. Three temperature step changes with three phases (S20: 20–40–20 °C, S30: 10–40–10 °C, S40: 0–40–0 °C) were conducted. Phase 1 took 30 min, phase 2 took 60 min and phase 3 took 40 min. Eleven participants remained sedentary throughout the experiment, and physiological responses, thermal perception and self-reported health symptoms were recorded. Results. In temperature up steps, steady skin temperature and sweating onset were delayed, and heart rate dropped by 10 bpm from S20 to S40. In temperature down steps to cold conditions, individuals transitioned from thermal comfort to discomfort and eventually cold strain. Blood pressure increased in temperature down steps, correlating with temperature step magnitudes. Thermal responses to temperature steps of equal magnitude but opposite directions were asymmetries, which weakened as step magnitude increased. Thermal perceptions responded faster than physiological changes after temperature steps, while self-reported health symptoms lagged behind physiological responses. Conclusions. These findings contribute to expanding basic data to understand the effects of temperature step magnitude and direction.

Latent Heat Loss Through Fabrics During an Alternate Simulated Work–Rest Sequence

Abstract:Humans produce different rates of sweating depending on the intensity level of a given activity. The clothing worn during the activity has a significant effect on the latent heat loss that can occur before, during, and after the activity. The water adsorption and spreading properties of a material yield differences in the amount of heat exchange that can occur between the person and the environment. Current test methods evaluate this using a value known as evaporative resistance, which is used to determine the heat exchange potential of a material. However, this value is only taken once the material has reached “steady state” and does not consider the sweating period before steady state is reached, or the drying period after steady state is reached. Therefore, an area under the curve (AUC) value was derived during these periods to compare the heat exchange properties of different materials. A sweating guarded hot plate was used to simulate different sweat rates, and therefore activity levels, to compare materials constructed of cotton, viscose, polyester, and wool. The overall latent heat loss of the hydrophobic wool was much less compared to the other samples with a gentler slope and lower AUC values than the other samples. It was found that the segment of time analyzed has a significant impact on the conclusion drawn about the latent heat loss of a material, p < 0.0001. Sweat rate also has a significant impact on the heat loss value, p < 0.0001, but is perhaps less useful when comparing samples to each other. It was found that comparing the different periods of the test could yield different conclusions when comparing materials for latent heat loss. Several current test methods do not consider phases outside of the steady state period and therefore miss valuable information pertinent to user comfort during these phases, especially in the post-exercise phase.

Abstract:Dynamic thermal environments may achieve higher thermal comfort levels than steady-state conditions. This is attributed to the impact of thermal alliesthesia and short-term adaptation phenomena on thermal perceptions. However, few studies have explored the combined effect of these two phenomena in transient environments. This study examined the short-term dynamic thermal perceptions and physiological responses of 50 subjects exposed to step-change indoor and different outdoor environments, including underneath an elevated building (UEB) and sunlit areas. Environmental parameters were monitored using a microclimate station, while physiological parameters were characterized by mean and local skin temperatures and sweat rate. Results show that short-term transitions lead to thermal alliesthesia and adaptation. When thermal environment changed, overshoot in thermal sensation persisted for at least 5 mins, and its influence on thermal comfort increased and then diminished at around the 5 min, at which point thermal adaptation began to occur. The current thermal comfort was affected by the preceding thermal status: in the strong alliesthesia zone, a 1.00 scale decrease in dTSV resulted in a 0.44 scale increase in dTCV; whereas in the moderate alliesthesia zone, a slight dTSV within 1.00 scale could positively affect dTCV. Skin temperature of exposed segments correlated better with TSV than those of unexposed ones. Still, skin temperatures had lower correlations with TSV compared with other static experiments. Besides thermal alliesthesia and adaptation effects, sweat accumulation and evaporation are possible reasons for the low correlations. The findings may have implications in adopting dynamic features outdoors for better design of thermal environment.

Early prognostic significance of umbilical cord troponin I in critically ill newborns. Prospective study with a control group

Abstract:Abstract Aim: To determine the value of cord blood cardiac troponin I levels (cTnI) as an early prognostic factor in critically ill newborns, and to compare cord cTnI levels with the prognostic value of the score for neonatal acute physiology (SNAP). Methods: Cord arterial samples were collected routinely for blood gas analysis, and cord venous samples for cTnI and cardiac-specific creatine kinase assay. The study group (n=109) comprised critically ill newborns who required mechanical ventilation. The control group (n=96) comprised newborns who were either completely healthy (n=48) or were followed in a level I neonatal care unit due to moderate-severity problems. Results: The critically ill newborns had significantly higher cTnI levels than control babies (median [min-max] 1.4 [0–13] vs. 0 [0–1.8] ng/mL, respectively; P<0.001). In critically ill newborns, non-survivors had significantly higher cTnI levels than survivors (median [min-max] 6.6 [1.3–13.0] vs. 1.3 [0–8.0] ng/mL, respectively; P<0.001). Receiver-operator curve analysis revealed that, compared with SNAP, cTnI was a more sensitive predictor of mortality in critically ill newborns (area under curve=0.96; 95% CI=0.90–1.02). Conclusion: Significantly elevated cord cTnI may be a valuable predictor of mortality in critically ill newborns.
Effects of moisture content and clothing fit on clothing apparent ‘wet’ thermal insulation: A thermal manikin study

Abstract:‘Wet’ thermal insulation, defined as the thermal insulation when clothing gets partially or fully wet, is an important physical parameter to quantify clothing thermal comfort. As the water/sweat gradually occupies the intra-yarn and inter-yarn air voids of the clothing material, the clothing intrinsic thermal insulation will be diminished and, hence, contribute to the loss of total insulation. In cold conditions, a loss in total thermal insulation caused by sweating may result in an inadequate thermal insulation to keep thermal balance and eventually leads to the development of hypothermia and cold injuries. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate the effect of clothing fit and moisture content on clothing ‘wet’ insulation. In this study, the ‘wet’ thermal insulation of three two-layer clothing ensembles was determined using a Newton thermal manikin. Four levels of moisture content were added to the underwear: 100, 200, 500 and 700 g. The clothing apparent ‘wet’ thermal insulation under different testing scenarios was calculated and compared. A third-degree polynomial relationship between the reduction in ‘wet’ thermal insulation and the moisture content added to underwear was obtained. Further, it was evident that the clothing fit has a minimal effect on the apparent ‘wet’ thermal insulation. The findings may have important applications in designing and engineering functional cold weather clothing and immersion suits.

The role of CD8+ T-cell replicative senescence in human aging.

Abstract:The strict limit in proliferative potential of normal human somatic cells - a process known as replicative senescence - is highly relevant to the immune system, because clonal expansion is fundamental to adaptive immunity. CD8(+) T cells that undergo extensive rounds of antigen-driven proliferation in cell culture invariably reach the end stage of replicative senescence, characterized by irreversible cell-cycle arrest and a critically short telomere length. Cultures of senescent CD8(+) T cells also show resistance to apoptosis, permanent loss of CD28 expression, altered cytokine profiles, reduced ability to respond to stress, and various functional changes. Cells with similar characteristics accumulate during normal aging as well as in younger persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus, suggesting that the process of replicative senescence is not an artifact of cell culture but is also occurring in vivo. Interestingly, in elderly persons, the presence of high proportions of CD8(+) T cells with characteristics of replicative senescence is correlated with reduced antibody responses to vaccines as well as with osteoporotic fractures. CD8(+)CD28(-) T cells also accumulate in patients with certain types of cancer. The emerging picture is that senescent CD8(+) T cells may modulate both immune and non-immune functions, contributing not only to reduced anti-viral immunity but also to diverse age-related pathologies.
Impact of body fat and fitness on human thermal responses under transient neutral-cool indoor conditions

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to look into how body fat and fitness affect individual thermal response differences in young male college students in transient indoor conditions. Sixteen male subjects were recruited with similar anthropometric characteristics (i.e., all subjects had similar height, weight [M], body mass index, and body surface area [AD]). According to their fitness levels (VO2max was 43.4 and 34.2 ml/kg/min for PE and OE, respectively), the subjects are divided into two groups (high fitness level group [PE] and ordinary fitness level group [OE]). The body fat percentages of the two selected groups were 16.1% and 22%, respectively. Thermal responses, body composition, cardio-pulmonary capacity, and physical fitness of subjects were measured, as well as their health status. There were significant differences in thermal sensation votes (TSV) and thermal comfort votes (TCV) between PE and OE subjects. Body fatness had a significant impact on thermal responses. In practise, occupants with similar anthropometric characteristics (AD/M & body fatness) can be arranged to work in the same offices to maximise their indoor thermal comfort because they have comparable thermal responses to cool environemnts.

Abstract:BackgroundThermophysiological comfort in a cold environment is mainly ensured by clothing. However, the thermal performance and protective abilities of textile fabrics may be sensitive to extreme environmental conditions. This article evaluated the thermal insulation properties of three technical textile assemblies and determined the influence of environmental parameters (temperature, humidity, and wind speed) on their insulation capacity.MethodsThermal insulation capacity and air permeability of the assemblies were determined experimentally. A sweating-guarded hotplate apparatus, commonly called the “skin model,” based on International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 11092 standard and simulating the heat transfer from the body surface to the environment through clothing material, was adopted for the thermal resistance measurements.ResultsIt was found that the assemblies lost about 85% of their thermal insulation with increasing wind speed from 0 to 16 km/h. Under certain conditions, values approaching 1 clo have been measured. On the other hand, the results showed that temperature variation in the range (−40°C, 30°C), as well as humidity ratio changes (5 g/kg, 20 g/kg), had a limited influence on the thermal insulation of the studied assemblies.ConclusionThe present study showed that the most important variable impacting the thermal performance and protective abilities of textile fabrics is the wind speed, a parameter not taken into account by ISO 11092.

Abstract:Short-term cold exposure (<1 h) may adversely affect human thermal comfort and health. Few studies have investigated the effectiveness of body heating in providing thermal protection to the torso against sharp temperature decreases, as well as the optimal operation modes of torso heating equipment. In this study, 12 male subjects were acclimatised in a room at 20 & DEG;C, then exposed to a cold environment at -2.2 & DEG;C, and finally returned to the room for recovery; each phase lasted 30 min. During cold exposure, they wore uniform clothing with an electrically heated vest (EHV) operated under these modes: no heating (NH), stage-regulated heating (SH), and intermittent alternating heating (IAH). Variations in subjective perceptions, physiological responses, and temperatures set for heating were recorded during the experiments. Torso heating mitigated the adverse effects of the large temperature down-step and continuous cold exposure on thermal perception and decreased the occurrence of three symptoms: cold hands or feet, running or stuffy noses, and shivering during cold exposure. After torso heating, the same skin temperature of the non-directly heated parts corresponded to a higher local thermal sensation, which was attributed to an indirect effect of the improved overall thermal state. The IAH mode could achieve thermal comfort at a reduced energy level, and it outperformed SH in subjective perception enhancement and self-reported symptom relief at lower heating temperatures. Additionally, under the same heating setting temperatures and power capacity, it could achieve an approximately 50 % longer usage time than SH could. The results suggest that intermittent heating protocol can be an efficient way to achieve thermal comfort and energy savings for personal heating devices.
