Abstract:Ammonia (NH 3 ) energy has emerged as a new international strategy to mitigate climate change and energy crises because ammonia–hydrogen fuel can effectively overcome the barriers in hydrogen energy development. However, improvement of the combustion efficiency of ammonia fuel is a significant obstacle to this development. Therefore, this paper comprehensively reviews the potential and capability of ammonia as a carbon-free fuel in internal combustion engines (ICEs). This paper covers the key and representative developments in the areas of pure ammonia and ammonia–hydrogen combustion characteristics, ammonia spray, NH 3 -dissociated hydrogen process, and ammonia–hydrogen engines. Thereafter, we investigate the advantages of TJI in ICEs in terms of parameters such as the lean limit, knock limit, engine performance, and emissions. Overall, the prechamber TJI offers promising advantages of multipoint ignitions and fast jet-flame velocity to resolve the current limitations of ammonia combustion. The application of prechamber TJI on the ammonia engine is presented with the proposal of a novel concept of reactivity-controlled TJI for ammonia engines. Ultimately, the future challenges involving the hybrid system of ammonia engine, highly-efficient ammonia engine, and post-treatment SCR for NO x emission and unburnt NH 3 are presented. This review entails useful insights for the future design of the ammonia–hydrogen engine.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problem of low combustion efficiency of ammonia fuel in internal combustion engines. Specifically, ammonia (NH₃), as a carbon - free fuel, has great potential in addressing climate change and the energy crisis, but its poor combustion characteristics, such as high ignition temperature, slow flame propagation speed, and narrow flammable range, limit its wide application in internal combustion engines. For this reason, this article comprehensively reviews the application progress of ammonia and ammonia - hydrogen blended fuels in internal combustion engines, and focuses on how the pre - chamber turbulent jet ignition (TJI) technology improves the combustion efficiency of ammonia fuel through multi - point ignition and rapid jet flame speed. ### Main problems and solutions of the paper 1. **Problems with the combustion characteristics of ammonia fuel**: - The characteristics of ammonia fuel, such as high auto - ignition temperature, low flame propagation speed, narrow flammable range, and high latent heat of evaporation, lead to its low combustion efficiency in internal combustion engines. - Pure ammonia fuel performs poorly in spark - ignition (SI) engines, and pure ammonia fuel is hardly used in compression - ignition (CI) engines. 2. **Application of ammonia - hydrogen blended fuels**: - Hydrogen has a high laminar combustion speed and a wide flammable range, which can make up for the deficiencies of ammonia fuel. Therefore, the combined use of ammonia and hydrogen can improve combustion performance. - By generating hydrogen in an on - board catalytic cracking reactor, the application of ammonia - hydrogen blended fuels in engines can be realized. 3. **Pre - chamber turbulent jet ignition (TJI) technology**: - The TJI technology can significantly increase the flame propagation speed and combustion stability by generating high - speed turbulent jets in the pre - chamber, thus solving the problem of low combustion efficiency of ammonia fuel. - The article proposes a new concept of reactivity - controlled TJI (RCTJI), which further optimizes the combustion performance of ammonia fuel in internal combustion engines. ### Future challenges Although the TJI technology brings hope for the application of ammonia fuel in internal combustion engines, it still faces some challenges: - **Mixing system**: It is necessary to develop an efficient ammonia - hydrogen mixing system to ensure the optimal fuel ratio and combustion efficiency. - **Efficient ammonia engine**: Further improve the overall efficiency of ammonia engines and reduce energy losses. - **Emission treatment**: Solve the problems of NOx emissions and unburned ammonia generated during ammonia combustion, for example, by using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. In conclusion, this paper aims to solve the problem of low combustion efficiency of ammonia fuel in internal combustion engines by introducing TJI technology and ammonia - hydrogen blended fuels, and provide valuable insights for the future design of ammonia - hydrogen engines.
