Abstract:There were high injury risks on lumbar and lower limb joints in parachuting landing, and the lumbar brace could protect lumbar. Besides, a backpack load was necessary in parachute landing and increased the injury risk. This study aimed to evaluate multi-joints protective effects of the lumbar brace on lumbar and lower limb joints in parachuting landing with the backpack load. Seven participants landed from a 120 cm height platform without and with a lumbar brace and without and with a 5-kg backpack load, respectively. Infrared makers were pasted on trunk, pelvis, and lower limb in order to build a multi-rigid-body model for calculating kinematic and kinetic parameters. The joint angular displacements of lumbar and ankle and the peak vertical ground reaction force were significantly decreased from 29.2 ± 9.2°, 45.2 ± 7.8°, and 14.7 ± 2.0 bodyweight to 21.6 ± 4.9° (p < 0.05), 39.0 ± 10.1° (p < 0.05) and 10.7 ± 1.3 bodyweight (p < 0.05) respectively by the lumbar brace with no backpack load, and the joint angular displacement of hip was significantly increased from 52.6 ± 7.2° to 68.3 ± 12.5° (p < 0.05). The joint angular displacement of lumbar and ankle were significantly decreased from 29.0 ± 5.0° and 53.8 ± 5.1° to 25.1 ± 5.2° (p < 0.05) and 48.5 ± 2.5° (p < 0.05) respectively by the lumbar brace with the backpack load, and the joint angular displacement of hip and knee were significantly increased from 60.1 ± 8.2° and 110.1 ± 9.3° to 69.7 ± 13.2° (p < 0.05) and 116.8 ± 5.8° (p < 0.05), respectively. The lumbar brace could provide the multi-joint protective effect by decreasing injuries of lumbar and ankle in landing both without and with the backpack load.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The objective is to compare the effects of a self-designed and self-manufactured novel prophylactic ankle brace [Chinese parachute ankle brace (CPAB)] and two ordinary ankle braces on the ankle joint during a half-squat parachute landing (HSPL) via biomechanical assessment.METHODS: Twenty elite paratroopers were in four different conditions: no brace, elastic brace, semi-rigid brace, and CPAB. Each participant was instructed to jump off a platform with three different heights, 40, 80, and 120 cm, and land on the force plate in a half-squat posture. The vertical ground reaction forces (vGRFs), joint angles, moments, powers, and works were calculated. After the experiment, every participant completed the questionnaires designed for this study.RESULTS: Increasing the dropping height increased all of the parameters significantly (P<0.01), except for time to peak vGRF (T-PvGRF). Applying three braces can all slightly increase vGRF (P=0.237) and reduce T-PvGRF by 6-10 ms, as well as decrease the joint angles, velocities, and moments on the sagittal and coronal planes. Wearing CPAB and a semi-rigid brace more efficiently restricted dorsiflexion and inversion (P<0.05), and they both significantly reduced ankle work (t=5.107, P<0.01; t=3.331, P<0.01) and peak power (t=7.237, P<0.01; t=6.711, P<0.01) at 120 cm. The total scores from low-to-high were semi-rigid brace (19.20±2.99), elastic brace (21.91±3.25), and CPAB (23.37±3.08).CONCLUSIONS: The CPAB was more effective at restricting ankle joint motion on the coronal and sagittal planes than the other two prophylactic ankle braces. Therefore, the CPAB had the advantages of a novel appearance, high efficiency, and superior comfort, providing a reliable choice for parachute jumping and training in China.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of dropping heights and prophylactic ankle braces on ankle joint biomechanics during half-squat parachute landing from two different heights. METHODS: There were 30 male elite paratroopers with formal parachute landing training and more than 2 yr of parachute jumping experience who were recruited for this study. The subjects tested three different ankle brace conditions (no-brace, elastic brace, semirigid brace). Each subject was instructed to jump off a platform from two different heights of 0.4 m and 0.8 m, and land on a force plate in a half-squat posture. The Vicon 3D motion capture system and force plate were used to record and calculate kinematic and kinetic data. RESULTS: Dropping height had a significant effect on peak vertical ground reaction force (vGRF), maximum ankle angular displacement, and time to vGRF. As compared with the no-brace group, use of an elastic ankle brace significantly reduced peak vGRF by 18.57% and both braces significantly reduced the maximal angular displacements of dorsiflexion. The semirigid brace provided greater restriction against maximal angular displacement of inversion. DISCUSSION: The elastic and semirigid ankle braces both effectively restricted motion stability of the ankle joint in the sagittal plane, and the semirigid ankle brace prevented excessive inversion, although the comfort of this device should be improved overall.
Kinematics and Kinetics of Lower-Extremity Joints in Parachuting Landing with Backpack and Knee Brace

Abstract:Injuries on lower-extremity joints were caused by high impact force in parachuting landing. Knee brace was used to protect knee by restraining motion of knee. Backpack was necessary in parachuting landing and would increase lower-extremity joints injuries. This study aimed to analyze kinematics and kinetics of hip, knee and ankle for investigating multi-joint protection of knee brace for those joints in parachuting landing with backpack. Seven participants landed from 120 cm height. Kinematics and kinetics of hip, knee and ankle were analyzed. It was found that without backpack knee brace decreased angular displacements of hip (12.0%), knee (10.3%) and ankle (18.6%) on sagittal plane and angular velocities of hip (11.9%), knee (6.6%) and ankle (20.9%) on sagittal plane. With backpack, knee brace decreased angular displacement (5.5%) and angular velocity of knee (6.2%) on sagittal plane, but did not significantly influence those of hip and ankle on sagittal plane. Ground reaction force, joint moments and joint energy absorptions were not significantly influenced with knee brace. In conclusion, in parachuting landing without backpack, knee brace could provide multi-joint protection for hip, knee and ankle. Reverse kinematics analysis of spine torque and force during simulated half-squat parachute landing

Abstract:Objective:To analyze the kinematics of causing spine injury by calculating the force and torque applied on spine with reverse kinematics method upon the simulated parachute landing test, and to provide theory base for the guidance of parachuting training.Methods:Twenty-three male active paratroopers without extremity trauma or spinal diseases volunteered to participate in this study. Their average height was (175.78±2.34) cm and average weight was (71.05±4.73) kg. All subjects respectively jumped from 40 cm- and 120 cm-platforms with a standard half-squat posture to the land point. The Vicon 3D motion capture system was used to record the jump process and the AMTI 3D force measuring platform was used to measure the ground reaction force. The biomechanical simulation model of spine and lower limbs was established by AnyBody Modeling System. All the experimental data were introduced into the model with the C3D format for kinematics and kinetics analysis. The measurements included the upper and lower spine torque and joint reaction force of lumbar segments. The maximum torque was compared between different height jumps and between the upper and lower spine ends in same height jumps.Results:The torques measured from the upper and lower spine ends had no statistical significance in both height jumps ( P>0.05 ). The maximum rotational torque and lateral torque of lower spine were significantly larger than those of upper spine in same height jumps ( Z=2.972-4.107, P<0.01), while the flexion and extension torques were not statistically different between two height jumps ( P>0.05). Compared to 40 cm jump, the vertical and the shearing forces on the lumbar segments (excluding L 3-4) significantly increased in 120 cm jump ( t=3.525-4.873, P<0.01), and the lateral force significantly increased at T 12-L 1 segment ( t=2.293, P<0.05). In the same height jumps, the vertical reaction forces on bottom-up lumbar segments decreased gradually. The anteroposterior shearing forces were in opposite directions at upper and lower spine ends and symmetrical distributed, and showed statistical significance among segments ( F=70.651, 85.101, P<0.01). The right and left lateral forces of spine were weak and showed insignificance among segments ( P>0.05). Conclusions:①Maintaining the stability of head, cervical spine, lumbar spine and pelvis would be helpful to avoid injuries. It's necessary to improve the strength of the muscles surrounded spine. ②The vertical and anteroposterior shearing forces would be the main reason led to low back pain. ③The ground training method should be more scientific to improve the impact tolerance and spatial perception.

Abstract:Half-squat parachuting landing is a kind of activity with high impact force. Injuries on lower-extremity joints are common in half-squat parachuting landing and would be increased with a backpack. An ankle brace was used to prevent ankle injuries in landing. However, few quantitative studies reported about the protection of an ankle brace for lower-extremity joints in half-squat parachuting landing with a backpack. This study focused on evaluating the protective effects of an ankle brace in half-squat parachuting landing with a backpack. Seven male participants landed from 120 cm with a backpack and an ankle brace. Each participant performed three landing trials on every experimental condition. Kinetics and kinematics of the hip, knee, and ankle were analyzed. It was found that the ankle brace did not significantly affect the ground reaction force with backpack but increased the ground reaction force from 14.7 ± 2.0 bodyweight to 16.2 ± 1.9 bodyweight ( p = 0.017) without the backpack. The ankle brace significantly ( p < 0.05) decreased the angular displacement, angular velocity, and angular acceleration of the ankle both without and with the backpack. In conclusion, the ankle brace could restrict ankle motion and significantly increase ground reaction force without the backpack. However, the ankle brace did not significantly influence ground reaction force and still restricted ankle motion with the backpack. Therefore, the ankle brace was more effective in half-squat parachuting landing with the backpack than no-backpack landing.

Finite Element Analysis of Lumbar Spine with Different Backpack Positions in Parachuting Landing

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the lumbar spine stress with different backpack positions in parachuting landing using a finite element model of lumbar vertebra 1-5. The backpack gravity center was set at three positions (posterior-high (case PH), posterior-low (case PL), and anterior-low (case AL)) respectively. In results, the peak Von-Mises stresses of the matrix, nucleus, fibers, endplate and ligament in case AL were 2.765 MPa, 0.534 MPa, 6.561 MPa, 4.045 MPa and 1.790 MPa respectively, lower than those in case PL (6.913 MPa, 1.316 MPa, 20.716 MPa, 10.917 MPa and 5.147 MPa respectively) and case PH (7.328 MPa, 1.394 MPa, 22.147 MPa, 11.617 MPa and 5.464 MPa respectively). In conclusion, setting the gravity center of backpack at anterior-low position would reduce lumbar spine stress and reduce lumbar spine injuries.
Height dependent kinematics of the foot in response to variant landing positions

Abstract:Objective We intended to evaluate the effectiveness of landing in either the half-squat-type position, common in military occupational specialties including parachute jumping, or the straddle-type position, common in athletic sports such as gymnastics.In landing from jumps at a height, asynchronous landing on either the right or left foot may increase impact forces, potentially resulting in injury. Methods In order to provide a kinematic assessment of the most effective landing position, a group of 20 health male subjects with current Chinese Army PLA paratrooper training were enrolled. Using a Pedar + Pliance (a brand, containing system pressure receptors) in-shoe pressure monitoring system individually fitted for each subject by in-sole size, the ground reaction forces (GRFs), landing pressures (LPs), and pressure time intervals (PTIs) affecting 10 distinct regions of the foot upon jumping from a height of 60 cm and landing in either the half-squat-type or straddle-type landing position were assessed. Results No significant differences were observed between the two landing positions except for a notable variation in PTI resulting in increasing asynchronous landing when the straddle-type landing position was employed.Conclusion These findings suggest that, with proper training, the half-squat-type landing position may reduce the probability of asynchronous landing on either the left or right foot when jumping from a height of 60 cm. Thus, the half-squat-type landing position is superior to the straddle-type landing position kinematically, which confirms the practical use of this landing style in occupational activities, such as military parachute jumping.
Effect of Different Protection on Lateral Ankle during Landing: An Instantaneous Impact Analysis

Abstract:Ankle sprain is the most common injury during parachute landing. The biomechanical behavior of the tissues can help us understand the injury mechanism of ankle inversion. To accurately describe the injury mechanism of tissues and assess the effect of ankle protection, a stable time of landing was obtained through the dynamic stability test. It was used for the boundary condition of the foot finite element (FE). The FE model was provided a static load equal to half of the bodyweight applied at the distal tibia and fibula; a foot-boot-brace FE model was established to simulate the landing of subjects on an inversion inclined platform of 0-20°, including non-, external, and elastic ankle braces. Compared with the non-ankle brace, both the external and elastic ankle braces decreased the peak strains of the cal-fibular, anterior Ta-fibular, and posterior Ta-fibular ligaments (15.2-33.0%), and of the peak stress of the fibula (15.2-24.5%). For the strain decrement of the aforementioned ligaments, the elastic brace performed better than the external ankle brace under the inversion of the 10° condition. The peak stress of the fibula (15.6 MPa) decreased up to 24.5% with an elastic brace and 5.6-10.3% with an external brace. The findings suggested that the behaviors of lateral ankle ligaments and fibula were meaningful for the functional ability of the ankle. This provides some suggestions regarding the optimal design of ankle protection.
Biomechanical gender differences of the ankle joint during simulated half-squat parachute landing.

Abstract:Introduction: A search of the literature did not reveal known gender differences in biomechanics during parachute landing. Methods: Eight male and eight female healthy adults participated in this experiment. Each individual jumped from platforms with three different heights (low: 0.32 m; medium: 0.52 m; and high: 0.72 m) and landed on flat ground in a standard half-squat parachute landing technique. The ground reaction force (GRF) normalized to bodyweight (BW), ankle joint kinematics, and the surface electromyogram (EMG) signals of the tibialis anterior (TA) and lateral gastrocnemius (LG) were measured. Two-way ANOVA was used to analyze the effects of the dropping height and gender factors. Results: The anterior-posterior GRF (men 1.01 BW; women 0.79 BW), rate of loading (men 260 BW center dot s(-1); women 127 BW center dot s(-1)), and absolute EMG amplitude of TA (pre-landing: men 219 mu v; women 129 mu v; post-landing: men 573 mu v; women 288 mu v) in the men's group were significantly higher than in the women's group, whereas peak angular velocity of dorsiflexion in the women's group (1627 degrees center dot s(-1)) was significantly higher than in the men's (1188 degrees center dot s(-1)). Discussion: Women are prone to transform the kinetic energy to the ankle motion, whereas men are more likely to transform it to friction. The co-contraction of the ankle flexor and extensor differs between genders. These factors may be associated with the higher incidence of parachute injuries among women reported by some authors.
Kinematic And Kinetic Analysis Of 3-Rpr Based Robotic Lumbar Brace

Abstract:Human spine has functions of load-bearing, shock absorption, protection and movement. Spine deformity seriously affects the daily life of patients and reduces the quality of life. Recent ideas of using robotic braces start a new form of rehabilitation for patients with spine deformity. In this paper, we presented a robotic lumbar brace for the potential application to scoliosis rehabilitation. The robotic brace is designed based on a 3-RPR parallel mechanism and consists of three degrees of freedom: horizontal, vertical, and rotational motions of moving platform relative to the fixed platform in the coronal plane. The robotic lumbar brace interferes with the condition of the spine by changing the position of the thorax relative to the pelvis in the coronal plane in order to relieve or correct scoliosis. The linear actuator is customized to meet the need for greater correction force. Kinetic analysis and kinematic analysis which includes inverse kinematics and forward kinematics are demonstrated in detail. The force and moment of robotic lumbar brace support on thorax during the movement can be calculated timely through kinetic analysis. The proposed robotic lumbar brace may have potentials in scoliosis rehabilitation.
Finite Element Study on Knee Injuries in the Parachute Landing

Abstract:Objective To numerically simulate the half-squat parachute landing and analyze the mechanism of knee injuries with the finite element method based on the data of the simulated parachute landing experiment. Method The half-squat parachuting experiment was performed by 16 healthy volunteers. The heights of simulated landing were 0. 32 m,0. 52 m and 0. 72 m respectively. A three-dimensional finite element model of human knee joint was developed based on magnetic resonance images. The kinematical data of the knee and the data of the reaction force obtained by experiments were used to make a numerical simulation of the parachute landing process. Results The stress level of the knee increased with the increase of the height. The lateral meniscus and cartilage suffered greater loads than the medial ones. Obvious stress concentrations occurred in the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament when the knee flexion degree reached the peak value. Conclusions The severe impact in parachute landing is the direct cause of injuries in parachute landing. The lateral cartilage and meniscus are more likely to be injured,and the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament are easier to tear when the knee flexion degree reaches the peak value.
Numerical modeling and analysis of neck injury induced by parachute opening shock

Abstract:Neck injuries from parachute opening shock (POS) are a concern in skydiving and military operations. This study employs finite element modeling to simulate POS scenarios and assess cervical spine injury risks. Validated against various conditions, including whiplash, the model replicates head/neck kinematics and soft tissue responses. POS simulations capture body/head motions during parachute deployment, indicating minimal risk of severe neck injuries (Abbreviated Injury Score/AIS ≥ 2) and low risk of soft tissue tears. Vertebral stress analysis during a rougher jump highlights high stress at C5/C6 lamina, indicating fracture risk. Comparative analysis with rear impact scenarios reveals distinct strain patterns, with rear impacts showing higher ligament strain, consistent with higher soft tissue damage risk. Though POS simulations exhibit lower strain values, they emphasize similar neck deformation patterns. The model's capability to accurately simulate head and neck movements during parachute openings provides critical validation for its use in assessing injury risks. The study's findings underline the importance of considering specific loading conditions in injury assessments and contribute to refining safety standards for skydiving and military operations. By highlighting the differences in injury mechanisms between POS and rear impacts, this research offers valuable insights into tailored injury mitigation strategies. The results not only enhance our understanding of neck injury mechanisms but also inform the development of protective gear and safety protocols, ultimately aiding in injury prevention for skydivers and military personnel.

Terrain stiffness and ankle biomechanics during simulated half-squat parachute landing.

Abstract:Background: A hard surface is potentially one of the risk factors for ankle injuries during parachute landing, but this has never been experimentally validated. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of terrain stiffness on ankle biomechanics during half-squat parachute landing (HSPL). Methods: Eight male and eight female healthy participants landed on three surfaces with standard HSPL technique. The three surfaces were cushioned mats with different thicknesses (0 mm, 4 mm, and 8 mm). The effects of terrain hardness and gender and their interaction with ground reaction forces, ankle kinematics, and electromyograms of selected lower-extremity muscles were statistically analyzed with multivariate analysis of variance. Results: The effects of terrain stiffness and the interaction between factors on all variables were not statistically significant. The effects of gender were not statistically significant on most variables. The peak angular velocity of the ankle dorsiflexion was significantly lower in men (mean 1345 degrees.s(-1)) than in women (mean 1965 degrees.s(-1)). A spongy surface even eliminated the differences between men compared to women in the activity of their tibialis anterior during simulated HSPL. Discussion: Terrain stiffness, in the ranges tested, did not appear to influence ankle biomechanics among individuals performing HSPL. Additional studies are required to know whether this finding is applicable to realistic parachuting.
The Risk Factors for Injuries in Parachuting and Load Exposure in the Training of Chinese Paratroopers.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Parachutists are generally recognized as a "high-risk" group among military personnel. However, the findings came mostly from data analysis without soldiers as subjects. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the injury prevalence in Chinese paratroopers on-site and determine the relationship between injury and risk factors encountered during parachuting and land-based training. METHODS: This study consisted of a field study with questionnaire and an experiment on muscle load during the simulated training exercise of platform jumping with surface electromyography (EMG), in which 7230 paratroopers and 38 soldiers were involved respectively. Chi-square test was used for the injury rate analysis, ANOVA and t-test for comparison of EMG data, and logistic regression for the analysis of multiple factors. Taking both intensity and time into consideration, jump-years (J-yrs) was used as a complex indicator for exposure to parachuting. Either injury per 1000 jumps or injured persons per 100 soldiers were calculated as injury prevalence. RESULTS: The overall injury rate among Chinese parachutists was found to be 13.9 injuries per 1000 parachute jumps and 24.5% based on personnel. The person-based injury rate increased with the exposure level significantly (.2 = 142.06, 2-sided, P < 0.05; trend test also significantly). Among the identified risk factors the uneven terrain was ranked as the most important one by logistic analysis. The EMG amplitude in MVE% increased with the platform height of all the 8 measured muscles and even reached 100% in 4 muscles, showing a high impact at landing. In addition, some characteristics of parachuting injury were also revealed by the injury type and site analysis. CONCLUSION: A dose-response relationship between parachuting and injury was observed significantly in the survey of Chinese paratroopers. Their injury rate was found to be relatively higher than the reported internationally. Landing impact as a critical point for injury seemed to be proved by the investigation and also the experiment with EMG measurement. It is suggested for future studies, to use the person-based injury rate, landing studied in work physiology and with consideration of different landing skills.

Abstract:Objective: To study effects of ankle stabilizer on electromyographic activities of lower-extremity muscles during the simulated half-squat parachute landing and its gender differences. Method: Eight male and eight female healthy adults were required to jump from a platform of 0.72 m high to simulate half-squat parachute landing. The experiment was divided into 3 groups: the barefoot one as control group, the group wearing tapes and braces respectively. The electromyogram (EMG) of each subject's tibial anterior, lateral gastrocnemius, biceps femoralis and rectus femoralis was measured. Two-way ANOVA was used to analyze and evaluate the effect of the stabilizers and genders on EMG variables. Results: The use of brace significantly increased the pre-landing EMG amplitude of the tibialis anterior for male (Control: 266 μV; Tape: 368 μV; Brace: 552 μV). The stabilizers had no significant effects on the other EMG parameters. Conclusions: Semi-rigid ankle braces are capable of arousing more active EMG of male's ankle flexor during half-squat parachute landing, but female does not share this predominance. Ankle stabilizers have no significant effects on EMG activities for knee joints.
Effects of Forefoot versus Rearfoot Landing on Biomechanical Risk Factors for Lower Limb Injuries and Performance During Stop-Jump Tasks

Abstract:Background: Lower limb injuries commonly occur during sudden deceleration movements. Instructing landing with forefoot or rearfoot is hard to answer, especially considering the injury prevention and keep the performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the forefoot and rearfoot landing on the biomechanical risk of lower limb injury prevention and performance during the stop-jumping task. Method: Twenty-three male health subjects were recruited for this study. During a stop-jumping task, three-dimensional kinematic and kinetic, and performance data were collected under two conditions: forefoot landing at initial ground contact and rearfoot landing at initial ground contact. Statistical parametric mapping analysis was used to compare the differences between different landing strategies. Result: Significant differences were found in ankle internal rotation angle and ankle joint moment at foot initial contact with ground between different landing strategies. Landing with forefoot has shorter stance time compared with landing with rearfoot. In the rearfoot strike, posterior ground reaction force (GRF) and GRF inclination angle were smaller than forefoot strike in 0-14% of the stance phase. Conclusion: Landing with forefoot may decrease the risk of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injuries and have an advancement in quick reaction time, as indicated by decreased stance time, but the risk of lateral ankle sprain may increase for the stop-jump task.

Biomechanical investigation of thoracolumbar spine in different postures during ejection using a combined finite element and multi-body approach

Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate the dynamic response of a multi-segment model of the thoracolumbar spine and determine how the sitting posture affects the response under the impact of ejection. A nonlinear finite element model of the thoracolumbar-pelvis complex (T9-S1) was developed and validated. A multi-body dynamic model of a pilot was also constructed so an ejection seat restraint system could be incorporated into the finite element model. The distribution of trunk mass on each vertebra was also considered in the model. Dynamics analysis showed that ejection impact induced obvious axial compression and anterior flexion of the spine, which may contribute to spinal injuries. Compared with a normal posture, the relaxed posture led to an increase in stress on the cortical wall, endplate, and intradiscal pressure of 43%, 10%, 13%, respectively, and accordingly increased the risk of inducing spinal injuries.

Abstract:Brace application has been reported to be an effective approach in treating mild to moderate idiopathic adolescent scoliosis. However, little attention is focused on the biomechanical study of patient-specific brace treatment. The purpose of this study was to propose a design method of personalized brace and to analyze its biomechanical behavior and to compare the brace forces with the I-Scan measurement system. Based on a three-dimensional patient-specific finite element model of the spine, rib cage, pelvis, and abdomen, a parametric patient-specific model of a thoracolumbosacral orthosis was built. The interaction between the torso and the brace was modeled by surface-to-surface contact interface. Three standard strap tensions (20 N, 40 N, and 60 N) were loaded on the back of the brace to simulate the strap tension. The I-Scan distribution pressure measurement system was used to measure the different region pressures, and the equivalent forces in these regions were calculated. The spinal curve changes and the forces acted on the brace generated by the strap tension were evaluated and compared with the measurement. The reduction in the coronal curvature was about 60% for a strap tension of 60 N. The sacral slope and the lordosis were partially reduced in this case, but the kyphosis had no obvious change. The brace slightly modified the axial rotation at the apex of the scoliotic curve. The forces generated in finite element analysis were approximately in good agreement with the measurement. The design and biomechanical analysis methods of patient-specific brace should be useful in the design of more effective braces.

Introduction: Chinese paratroopers have traditionally performed the half-squat parachute landing (HSPL), which was different from the well-known parachute landing fall. During HSPL, ankle biomechanics have been shown to vary greatly between genders. Therefore, it is necessary to consider gender with regard to the design of ankle stabilizers for paratroopers. Methods: Eight male and eight female healthy participants landed from platforms under three ankle conditions based on different stabilizer rigidity levels (barefoot control, elastic tape, and semi-rigid brace). Multivariate analysis of variance was used to analyze the effects and interactions of ankle stabilizer, gender, and dropping height on the ground reaction forces (GRF), ankle kinematics, and the shank surface electromyogram (EMG). Results: Compared to men, women had significantly higher peak medial-lateral GRF when they were equipped with stabilizers (tape: men 0.521 vs. women 0.856 bodyweight; brace: men 0.531 vs. 0.935 bodyweight), except when barefoot. Both stabilizers significantly decreased all peak angular displacements, but no significant interaction was detected between gender and stabilizer rigidity in ankle kinematics. Compared to barefoot, the semi-rigid brace significantly increased male pre-landing EMG amplitude of the tibialis anterior from 218 to 525 mu V and post-landing EMG amplitude of the lateral gastrocnemius from 323 to 910 mu V, but no corresponding change took place in women. Discussion: The semi-rigid stabilizer was helpful for men in increasing shank muscle activities. Increased stabilizer rigidity had little influence on the muscle activities of women and this could contribute to greater injury risk in women during HSPL.
