Abstract:This review presents information on one of the branches of molecular genetics—proteomics, its goals and objectives, methodological apparatus, and increasing role in the study of natural ecosystems. The following problems are discussed: the lower efficiency of extracting useful information when studying the ecosystems at a proteomic level as compared with genomic one and ways to overcome it; peculiarities of the study of the proteomes of poikilothermic and homeothermic organisms; prospects for proteomic analysis of model and nonmodel objects; and the role of the Human Proteome Project, which provided a stimulus for the development of proteomic studies of other groups of organisms. The final section is devoted to the evolutionary applications of proteomics. The examples demonstrate the efficiency of proteomic technologies in solving the problems of ecology and evolution. Proteomics can be an independent tool and additional component in a complex analysis of ecosystems, as well as a powerful stimulus for developing old hypotheses and theories and creating new ones.
