Abstract:The first image of a black hole shadow graced the front pages of newspapers around the world when it was released by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration in 2019. Here the EHT team follows on from that groundbreaking result, presenting re-imaging of the same supermassive black hole M87* using data from the subsequent observing run, in April 2018. Significant improvements have been made since the initial observations, and this second run benefitted from increased bandwidth and a wider frequency coverage in part due to the addition of the Greenland Telescope to the network. The new data enable confirmation of the size and shape of the asymmetric ring-like structure observed previously, with a consistent diameter of ~42 μas across both runs. However, a significant change is seen in the position angle of the bright spot in the ring, which shifted by about 30° relative to the earlier result.

Abstract:We present measurements of the properties of the central radio source in M87 using Event Horizon Telescope data obtained during the 2017 campaign. We develop and fit geometric crescent models (asymmetric rings with interior brightness depressions) using two independent sampling algorithms that consider distinct representations of the visibility data. We show that the crescent family of models is statistically preferred over other comparably complex geometric models that we explore. We calibrate the geometric model parameters using general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) models of the emission region and estimate physical properties of the source. We further fit images generated from GRMHD models directly to the data. We compare the derived emission region and black hole parameters from these analyses with those recovered from reconstructed images. There is a remarkable consistency among all methods and data sets. We find that >50% of the total flux at arcsecond scales comes from near the horizon, and that the emission is dramatically suppressed interior to this region by a factor >10, providing direct evidence of the predicted shadow of a black hole. Across all methods, we measure a crescent diameter of 42+/-3 micro-as and constrain its fractional width to be <0.5. Associating the crescent feature with the emission surrounding the black hole shadow, we infer an angular gravitational radius of GM/Dc2 = 3.8+/- 0.4 micro-as. Folding in a distance measurement of 16.8(+0.8,-0.7) Mpc gives a black hole mass of M = 6.5 +/- 0.2(stat) +/-0.7(sys) 10^9 Msun. This measurement from lensed emission near the event horizon is consistent with the presence of a central Kerr black hole, as predicted by the general theory of relativity.

The Science and Technology Behind the First Black Hole Image in History

Abstract:On April 10, 2019, the first black hole image in history was released by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration involving more than 200 astronomers, including 16 from the Chinese mainland. This image was captured using EHT at an angular resolution of 20 microarcseconds, and it shows the shadow of the black hole and the surrounding photon ring at the center of the radio galaxy M87 at a distance of 55 million light years from the Earth, which enabled the derivation of the black hole mass of 6.5 billion solar masses. EHT uses the very long baseline interferometry technology to combine eight telescopes worldwide to form a virtual telescope with a baseline of ten thousand kilometers (approximately the size of the Earth), which enables an angular resolution to reach as high as 20 microarcseconds at the 1.3-millimeter wavelength (with a frequency range of 227-229 GHz). The observations of the central black hole of the nearby radio galaxy M87 were conducted on April 5, 6, 10, and 11 of 2017. After careful data reduction and image processing over the last two years, the first image of the M87 black hole was released. It directly shows the black hole shadow surrounded by an asymmetric photon ring with a diameter of approximately 42 microarcseconds, consistent with the blurred simulated image from a general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics simulation at an angular resolution of 20 microarcseconds. With the more accurate distance of 54.8 million light years measured via the EHT, the size of the black hole shadow directly enabled a mass measurement of the black hole in M87 of 6.5 billion solar masses. This is consistent with the previous estimation of 6.6 billion solar masses based on stellar dynamics; however, it is inconsistent with the result of 3.5 billion solar masses based on gas dynamics, implying the problems in the previous measurement of the gas dynamics. The first imaging of the black hole shadow directly confirms the prediction of Einstein's theory of general relativity with respect to black holes. It provides the measurement of the black hole mass together with the fundamental knowledge of how matter accretes onto the black hole and how the relativistic jet is produced in the vicinity of the black hole event horizon. The EHT collaboration will release its next image of the supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way galaxy soon. The differences between the black hole images in M87 and the Milky Way may enable us to understand the differences in the physical processes surrounding black holes between an active galaxy (such as M87) and a normal galaxy (such as the Milky Way). In the future, we hope that the space- and moon-based millimeter-wavelength telescopes will be constructed and will join the efforts to reach angular resolutions of less than 1 microarcsecond, which will provide us with more powerful facilities to capture clearer images of many black holes in the Universe. As a superpower in space, China is expected to contribute more to both technology and science for future research on black holes.

Abstract:The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has revolutionized our ability to study black holes by providing unprecedented spatial resolution and unveiling horizon-scale details. With advancements leading to the next-generation EHT, there is potential to probe even deeper into the black hole's dark region, especially the inner shadow characterized by low-intensity foreground emissions from the jet, thanks to a significant enhancement in dynamic range by two orders of magnitude. We demonstrate how such enhanced observations could transform supermassive black holes into powerful probes for detecting annihilating dark matter, which can form a dense profile in the vicinity of supermassive black holes, by examining the morphology of the black hole image.

Abstract: In April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration revealed the first image of the candidate super-massive black hole (SMBH) at the centre of the giant elliptical galaxy Messier 87 (M87). This event-horizon-scale image shows a ring of glowing plasma with a dark patch at the centre, which is interpreted as the shadow of the black hole. This breakthrough result, which represents a powerful confirmation of Einstein's theory of gravity, or general relativity, was made possible by assembling a global network of radio telescopes operating at millimetre wavelengths that for the first time included the Atacama Large Millimeter/ submillimeter Array (ALMA). The addition of ALMA as an anchor station has enabled a giant leap forward by increasing the sensitivity limits of the EHT by an order of magnitude, effectively turning it into an imaging array. The published image demonstrates that it is now possible to directly study the event horizon shadows of SMBHs via electromagnetic radiation, thereby transforming this elusive frontier from a mathematical concept into an astrophysical reality. The expansion of the array over the next few years will include new stations on different continents - and eventually satellites in space. This will provide progressively sharper and higher-fidelity images of SMBH candidates, and potentially even movies of the hot plasma orbiting around SMBHs. These improvements will shed light on the processes of black hole accretion and jet formation on event-horizon scales, thereby enabling more precise tests of general relativity in the truly strong field regime.

Abstract:Recent developments have ushered in a new era in the field of black hole astrophysics, providing our first direct view of the remarkable environment near black hole event horizons. These observations have enabled astronomers to confirm long-standing ideas on the physics of gas flowing into black holes with temperatures that are hundreds of times greater than at the center of the Sun. At the same time, the observations have conclusively shown that light rays near a black hole experience large deflections which cause a dark shadow in the center of the image, an effect predicted by Einstein's theory of General Relativity. With further investment, this field is poised to deliver decades of advances in our understanding of gravity and black holes through new and stringent tests of General Relativity, as well as new insights into the role of black holes as the central engines powering a wide range of astronomical phenomena.

Abstract:The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a project to assemble a Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) network of mm wavelength dishes that can resolve strong field General Relativistic signatures near a supermassive black hole. As planned, the EHT will include enough dishes to enable imaging of the predicted black hole "shadow", a feature caused by severe light bending at the black hole boundary. The center of M87, a giant elliptical galaxy, presents one of the most interesting EHT targets as it exhibits a relativistic jet, offering the additional possibility of studying jet genesis on Schwarzschild radius scales. Fully relativistic models of the M87 jet that fit all existing observational constraints now allow horizon-scale images to be generated. We perform realistic VLBI simulations of M87 model images to examine detectability of the black shadow with the EHT, focusing on a sequence of model images with a changing jet mass load radius. When the jet is launched close to the black hole, the shadow is clearly visible both at 230 and 345 GHz. The EHT array with a resolution of 20-30$\mu$as resolution ($\sim$2-4 Schwarzschild radii) is able to image this feature independent of any theoretical models and we show that imaging methods used to process data from optical interferometers are applicable and effective for EHT data sets. We demonstrate that the EHT is also capable of tracing real-time structural changes on a few Schwarzschild radii scales, such as those implicated by VHE flaring activity of M87. While inclusion of ALMA in the EHT is critical for shadow imaging, generally the array is robust against loss of a station.

Abstract:In recent years, unprecedented progress has been achieved regarding black holes' observation through the electromagnetic channel. The images of the supermassive black holes M87$^{*}$ and Sgr A$^{*}$ released by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration provided direct visual evidence for their existence, which has stimulated further studies on various aspects of the compact celestial objects. Moreover, the information stored in these images provides a new way to understand the pertinent physical processes that occurred near the black holes, to test alternative theories of gravity, and to furnish insight into fundamental physics. In this review, we briefly summarize the recent developments on the topic. In particular, we elaborate on the features and formation mechanism of black hole shadows, the properties of black hole images illuminated by the surrounding thin accretion disk, and the corresponding polarization patterns. The potential applications of the relevant studies are also addressed.

Abstract:The black hole in the center of the Galaxy, associated with the compact source Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), is predicted to cast a shadow upon the emission of the surrounding plasma flow, which encodes the influence of general relativity in the strong-field regime. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) network with a goal of imaging nearby supermassive black holes (in particular Sgr A* and M87) with angular resolution sufficient to observe strong gravity effects near the event horizon. General relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations show that radio emission from Sgr A* exhibits vari- ability on timescales of minutes, much shorter than the duration of a typical VLBI imaging experiment, which usually takes several hours. A changing source structure during the observations, however, violates one of the basic assumptions needed for aperture synthesis in radio interferometry imaging to work. By simulating realistic EHT observations of a model movie of Sgr A*, we demonstrate that an image of the average quiescent emission, featuring the characteristic black hole shadow and photon ring predicted by general relativity, can nonetheless be obtained by observing over multiple days and subsequent processing of the visibilities (scaling, averaging, and smoothing) before imaging. Moreover, it is shown that this procedure can be combined with an existing method to mitigate the effects of interstellar scattering. Taken together, these techniques allow the black hole shadow in the Galactic center to be recovered on the reconstructed image.

Abstract:First sketch of black hole from M87 galaxy was obtained by Event Horizon Telescope, recently. As appearance of black hole shadow reflects space-time geometry of black holes, observations of black hole shadow may be a promising way to test general relativity in strong field regime. In this paper, we focus on angular radius of spherical black hole shadow with respect to freely falling observers. In the framework of general relativity, aberration formulation and angular radius-gravitational redshift relation are presented. For the sake of intuitive, we consider parametrized Schwarzschild black hole and Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole as representative examples. We find that the freely in-falling observers would observe finite size of shadow, when they go through inner horizon. For observers freely falling from the outer horizon of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole, we find that the angular radius of the shadows could increase even when the observers move farther from the black hole.

Abstract:The Event Horizon Telescope's image of the M87 black hole provides an exciting opportunity to study black hole physics. Since a black hole's event horizon absorbs all electromagnetic waves, it is difficult to actively probe the horizon's existence. However, with the help of a family of extremely compact, horizon-less objects, named gravastars", whose external space-times nearly identical to those of black holes, one can test the absence of event horizons: absences of additional features that arise due to the existence of the gravastar, or its surface, can be used as quantitative evidence for black holes. We apply Gralla et al.'s approach to studying black hole images to study the images of two types of gravastars: transparent ones and reflective ones. In both cases, the transmission of rays through gravastars, or their reflections on their surfaces, lead to more rings in their images. For simple emission models, where the redshifted emissivity of the disk is peaked at a particular radius r-peak, the position of a series of rings can be related in a simple manner to light ray propagation: a ring shows up around impact parameter b whenever rays incident from infinity at b intersects the disk at r-peak. We show that additional rings will appear in the images of transparent and reflective gravastars. In particular, one of the additional rings for the reflective gravastar is due to the prompt reflection of light on the gravastar surface and appears to be well separated from the others. This can be a robust feature, which may be reliably used to constrain the reflectivity of the black hole's horizon.

Accessing a New Population of Supermassive Black Holes with Extensions to the Event Horizon Telescope

Abstract:The Event Horizon Telescope has produced resolved images of the supermassive black holes Sgr A* and M87*, which present the largest shadows on the sky. In the next decade, technological improvements and extensions to the array will enable access to a greater number of sources, unlocking studies of a larger population of supermassive black holes through direct imaging. In this paper, we identify 12 of the most promising sources beyond Sgr A* and M87* based on their angular size and millimeter flux density. For each of these sources, we make theoretical predictions for their observable properties by ray tracing general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic models appropriately scaled to each target's mass, distance, and flux density. We predict that these sources would have somewhat higher Eddington ratios than M87*, which may result in larger optical and Faraday depths than previous EHT targets. Despite this, we find that visibility amplitude size constraints can plausibly recover masses within a factor of 2, although the unknown jet contribution remains a significant uncertainty. We find that the linearly polarized structure evolves substantially with Eddington ratio, with greater evolution at larger inclinations, complicating potential spin inferences for inclined sources. We discuss the importance of 345 GHz observations, milli-Jansky baseline sensitivity, and independent inclination constraints for future observations with upgrades to the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) through ground updates with the next-generation EHT (ngEHT) program and extensions to space through the Black Hole Explorer (BHEX).

Abstract:We elucidate the physical origin of the dark spot in the image of supermassive black hole SgrA* presented very recently by the EHT collaboration. It is argued that this dark spot, which is noticeably smaller than the classical black hole shadow, is the northern hemisphere of the event horizon globe. The classical black hole shadow is unseen in the image of SgrA*. The dark spot in the image of SgrA* is projected within the position of the classical black hole shadow on the celestial sphere. The outer boundary of this dark spot is an equator on the event horizon globe.

Abstract:The images of supermassive black holes captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration have allowed us to have access to the physical processes that occur in the vicinity of the event horizons of these objects. This has enabled us to learn more about the state of rotation of black holes, about the formation of relativistic jets in their vicinity, about the magnetic field in the regions close to them, and even about the existence of the photon ring. Furthermore, black hole imaging gives rise to a new way of testing general relativity in the strong field regime. This has initiated a line of research aimed at probing different physical scenarios. While many scenarios have been proposed in the literature that yield distortion effects that would be a priori detectable at the resolution achieved by future EHT observations, the vast majority of those scenarios involve strange objects or exotic matter content. Here, we consider a less heterodox scenario which, involving non-exotic matter, in the sense that it satisfies all energy conditions and is dynamically stable, also leads to a deformation of the black hole shadow. We consider a specific concentration of non-emitting, relativistic matter of zero optical depth forming a bubble around the black hole. Due to gravitational refraction, such a self-interacting -- dark -- matter concentration may produce sub-annular images, i.e. subleading images inside the photon ring. We calculate the ray tracing in the space-time geometry produced by such a matter configuration and obtain the corresponding black hole images. While for concreteness we restrict our analysis to a specific matter distribution, modeling the bubble as a thin-shell, effects qualitatively similar to those described here are expected to occur for more general density profiles.

Abstract:We describe the possible forms of black hole images viewed by a distant observer (or a telescope) on the celestial sphere. These images are numerically calculated based on general relativity and the equations of motion in the Kerr–Newman metric. A black hole image is a gravitationally lensed image of the black hole event horizon. It may be viewed as a black spot on the celestial sphere, projected inside the position of a classical black hole shadow. In the nearest future it will be possible to verify modified gravity theories by observations of astrophysical black holes with Space Observatory Millimetron.

Abstract:The first image of black hole in M87 galaxy taken by Event Horizon Telescope shows that directed observation of supermassive black holes would be a promising way to test general relativity in strong gravity field regime. In order to calculate shadow of rotating black holes with respect to observers located at finite distance, orthonormal tetrads have been introduced in previous works. However, it is noticed that different choice of tetrads does not lead to the same shape of shadow for observers in near regions. In this paper, we alternatively use formula of astrometric observables for calculating the shadow of a general rotating black hole with respect to these observers. For the sake of intuitive, we also consider Kerr-de Sitter black holes as a representative example. In this space-time, size and shape of Kerr-de Sitter black hole shadows are expressed as functions of distance between the black hole and observer. It is forecasted that the distortion of shadow would increase with distance.

Abstract:A detailed analysis is presented of gravitational microlensing by intervening compact objects of the black hole shadows imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). We show how the center, size, and shape of the shadow depend on the Einstein angle relative to the true/unlensed shadow size, and how the location of the lens affects the shift, size, and asymmetry of the black hole shadow due to microlensing. Assuming a supermassive black hole (SMBH) casts a circular-shaped true shadow, microlensing can create an asymmetry of up to approximately 8\%, which is twice the asymmetry caused by the SMBH's spin and its tilt relative to us. Furthermore, the size can be enhanced by $\sim$50\% of the true shadow. Currently, the terrestrial baselines of EHT lack the resolution to detect microlensing signatures in the shadows. However, future expansions of EHT, including space-based baselines at the Moon and L$_2$, could potentially enable the detection of microlensing events. For Sgr A$^*$, an event rate of 0.0014 per year makes the microlensing phenomena difficult to observe even with space-based baselines for the stellar population in the stellar bulge and stellar disk for lens masses $\sim M_\odot$. Nonetheless, the presence of a cluster of 20,000 stellar-mass black holes in the central parsec of the Milky Way, expected to arise from dynamical friction acting on infalling stellar clusters, significantly boosts the event rate. Hence, continuously monitoring the shadow of Sgr A$^*$ could offer novel insights into the compact object population surrounding the Galactic Center.
