Abstract:Both the penetrated and the scattered fields in the presence of a non-uniform cold magnetized plasma column are investigated in this work, and the direct integral equation is formulated for describing the currents on the surrounded multiple perfectly conducting strips on the outer boundary of plasma column due to a normally incident TM-wave. In order to formulate such an integral equation, two-dimensional dyadic Green's functions in multi-layered cylindrical shells are derived at first in terms of the cylindrical vector wave functions. Furthermore, by using the Galerkin's method, the surface current of the strips is expanded in the form of a series of Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. Parameter studies are performed to show the variation of the near- and far-zone fields with the operating frequency, the effective collision frequency, as well as the angular width and the number of surrounded strips.

Abstract:The interaction between a magnetized ion and two monochromatic shear Alfven waves propagating obliquely to an ambient magnetic field is investigated both analytically and numerically. According to the Hamiltonian of this system, the invariant of motion at the lowest order and the half-island widths at the corresponding resonances are obtained analytically using the Lie transformation method. It is shown that these theoretical results agree with the numerical ones from the Poincare surface of section. The regular motions from the invariant and the transition to stochasticity due to resonance overlapping are demonstrated. Compared to the case of a single wave, there may be a lower stochastic threshold in the multiple-wave problem.

Abstract:The interaction between an ion and multiple electrostatic waves propagating perpendicularly to an ambient magnetic field with shear is investigated. Based on the Lie transformation method, with the wave amplitude and the magnetic shear both as the perturbation parameters, the analytical formulas for the reduced Hamiltonian is derived and results are compared with numerical calculations of the complete equations of motion for the case of two on-resonance waves and the case of two off-resonance waves, respectively. It is found that the effect of magnetic shear drastically prevents the acceleration of an ion in both cases. This result will help us to understand the behaviors of ions in a magnetic sheared device, such as tokamak.

Abstract:The fluid-kinetic hybrid electron model for global electromagnetic gyrokinetic particle simulations has been formulated in toroidal geometry using magnetic coordinates, providing the capabilities to describe low frequency processes in electromagnetic turbulence with electron dynamics. In the limit of long wavelength and no parallel electric field our equations reduce to the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations. The formulation has been generalized to include equilibrium flows. The equations for zonal components of electrostatic and vector potentials have been derived, demonstrating the electron screening of the zonal vector potential.

Abstract:In this paper, the electromagnetic field of a horizontal infinitely long magnetic line source over the dielectric-coated earth is treated analytically, and the complete approximate solution for the radiated field under the far-field conditions is outlined. The total field is composed of four modes: the direct wave, the ideal reflected wave or image wave, the trapped surface wave, and the lateral wave. In particular, the complete analytical formulas are obtained for both the trapped surface wave and the lateral wave. The trapped surface wave is determined by the sum of residues of the poles. When the infinitely long magnetic line source or the observation point is away from the planar surface of the dielectric-coated earth, the trapped surface wave decreases exponentially with height, and the total field is determined primarily by the lateral wave. When the conductivity of the earth is large, and both the infinitely long magnetic line source and the observation point are on or close to the air-dielectric boundary, the total field is determined primarily by the trapped surface wave.

Abstract:Magnetic metamaterials exhibit extraordinary electromagnetic properties and have shown great potential in low-frequency near-field electromagnetic applications. A near-field device or system is consisted of different natural media and low-frequency metamaterials, and it is essential to develop a numerical methodology to compute the transient response of such a device or system. However, most existing works are dedicated to high-frequency metamaterials and wave propagation problems, whereas the study of numerical methodology for low-frequency metamaterials in magnetoquasistatic (MQS) fields is still blank and challenging. In this regard, a time-domain finite-element method (TDFEM) is first derived for MQS field applications of low-frequency metamaterials. The metamaterials are modeled as continuous media and approximated by a nonstandard Lorentz dispersion equation. The formulas to handle dispersive media in near field are derived based on the auxiliary equation method. The proposed method is validated in a 2-D axisymmetric case study by comparing its results with those of frequency-domain computations.

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are one commonly observed plasma waves in the Earth's inner magnetosphere and play a crucial role in particle dynamics in the radiation belt and ring current. EMIC waves are excited by a proton temperature anisotropy and generally have a left-handed polarization, however satellite observations have usually reported the existence of linearly polarized EMIC waves in the inner magnetosphere. In this paper, we employ a two-dimensional (2D) hybrid code in a dipole field (gcPIC-hybrid) to simulate the propagation of EMIC waves from the equatorial source region. We track one single EMIC wave packet and analyze how its properties evolve along its trajectory. In diagnosing the wave normal angle (WNA) of the packet, we propose a novel method called Wave Front Shape Identification (WFSI). The ellipticity can also been calculated after we know the WNA. By comparing the ellipticity calculated from the linear theory and the ellipticity diagnosed from the simulation, we conclude that in a proton-electron plasma, EMIC waves would turn from a left-handed polarization to a linear polarization solely due to the propagation effect when the waves propagate toward higher latitudes and become oblique. We also find that the peak frequency of the wave packet (the wave mode with the maximum amplitude) decreases when propagating toward higher latitudes, which is due to different growth and damping behavior of different modes.

Abstract:A helix type slow wave structure filled partially with plasma is immersed in a strong longitudinal magnetic field. By means of a sheath model and linear field theory, the dispersion relation of the slow wave structure is derived. The hybrid modes, which are formed at frequencies where the phase velocities of electromagnetic wave and electrostatic wave coincide, are found. The trend of change for the dispersion characteristic, interaction impedance and linear gain is analyzed in different plasma densities by numerical computation. Some useful results are obtained on the basis of the discussion.

Abstract:This article presents an efficient analytic algorithm to calculate the electromagnetic (EM) fields radiated from orthogonal magnetic and electric dipoles in the fully anisotropic planar-stratified media. The EM fields are transformed into the frequency–wavenumber domain by the double Fourier transform, which yields a set of ordinary differential equations, consisting of a system matrix, a field vector, and a source vector. The eigenvalues of the system matrix are uniquely determined, but the corresponding eigenvectors can be multiplied by an arbitrary constant or be normalized by energy. With these eigenvalues and eigenvectors, the field vectors are expressed as mode fields consisting of the up-going and down-going fields. The propagation of the mode fields in each layer is described by the generalized reflection/transmission method. To accelerate the evaluation of the inverse Fourier transform of EM field from spectral domain to spatial domain, an approximated primary field was subtracted from total field. Numerical results from a finite element method (FEM) validate the proposed method. Then, we apply this new algorithm to a variety of real applications in geophysical prospecting.

Abstract:We present a formulation for deriving effective medium properties of infinitely periodic two-dimensional metamaterial lattice structures beyond the static and quasi-static limits. We utilize the multipole expansions, where the polarization currents associated with the supported Bloch modes are expressed via the electric dipole, magnetic dipole, and electric quadrupole moments per unit length. We then propose a method to calculate the Bloch modes based on the lattice geometry and individual unit element structure. The results revert to well-known formulas in the quasistatic limit and are useful for the homogenization of nanorod-type metamaterials which are frequently used in optical applications.

Hydromagnetic Waves in a Compressed Dipole Field via Field-Aligned Klein-Gordon Equations

Abstract:Hydromagnetic waves, especially those of frequencies in the range of a few milli-Hz to a few Hz observed in the Earth's magnetosphere, are categorized as Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) waves or pulsations. They have been extensively studied due to their importance in the interaction with radiation belt particles and in probing the structures of the magnetosphere. We developed an approach in examining the toroidal standing Aflvén waves in a background magnetic field by recasting the wave equation into a Klein-Gordon (KG) form along individual field lines. The eigenvalue solutions to the system are characteristic of a propagation type when the corresponding eigen-frequency is greater than a cut-off frequency and an evanescent type otherwise. We apply the approach to a compressed dipole magnetic field model of the inner magnetosphere, and obtain the spatial profiles of relevant parameters and the spatial wave forms of harmonic oscillations. We further extend the approach to poloidal mode standing Alfvén waves along field lines. In particular, we present a quantitative comparison with a recent spacecraft observation of a poloidal standing Alfvén wave in the Earth's magnetosphere. Our analysis based on KG equation yields consistent results which agree with the spacecraft measurements of the wave period and the amplitude ratio between the magnetic field and electric field perturbations. We also present computational results of eigenvalue solutions to the compressional poloidal mode waves in the compressed dipole magnetic field geometry.

Abstract:In natural and laboratory magnetized plasmas, an equilibrium electric field may exist perpendicular to the background magnetic field. In such a situation all the plasma species experience a common drift and the equilibrium distribution functions have a common shift in velocity space. The susceptibility tensor is derived for such a situation using the characteristics and then the Lorentz transformation method is adopted to verify the results. As an application we give an analysis of the waves propagating parallel to the background magnetic field for a simple electron plus single charged ion plasma. It is predicted that the presence of a transverse equilibrium electric field can drastically change the wave propagation only if the wave frequency is close to the plasma Langmuir frequency.

Abstract:Recently, the magnetic field penetration through a circular aperture in a thin perfect electric conductor when excited by a loop antenna placed coaxially with the aperture is solved analytically in the quasi-static frame. However, the analytical solution is only applicable to the longitudinal component. Here, we present two approaches to obtain the transverse component. The first one belongs to the direct extension of the earlier results, but lengthy mathematic derivations are performed to solve a complex integral. The second one utilizes the magnetic vector potential formulation and then converts it into a known scalar potential problem.

Abstract:Two‐dimensional (2‐D) hybrid model is developed to investigate the second harmonic (SH) generation of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves. Applying the singular value decomposition method to simulated fields, we show that the SH exhibits wave properties analogous to typical EMIC waves generated by ion cyclotron instabilities, that is, left‐hand polarization and small wave normal angle. However, the bicoherence index inferred from simulated fields reflects a strong phase coupling between the fundamental wave (FW) and the SH, illustrating the nonlinear generation of the SH by the FW. The necessary conditions, especially for the wave vector relation, are further verified from a 2‐D perspective. The simulated amplitude ratios well meet the theoretical results only in the SH saturation stage, while the necessary conditions remain satisfied almost throughout the simulation. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the SH excitation in a 2‐D simulation domain, contributing to a deeper understanding of EMIC wave nonlinear generation.

Abstract:A two-dimensional plasma–wave interaction model, which is based on the cold collisional plasma dielectric tensor, is applied to investigate the wave propagation and power depositions under different magnetic configurations in helicon plasmas. The varied magnetic configurations are formed by changing the radius of the magnetic coil. When the magnetic coil was positioned closer to the plasma, the magnetic field within the plasma became stronger and more curved. Consequently, the simulation results show that the wave propagation and power deposition in plasmas follow the curved magnetic field lines. In the axial direction, the periodic distribution of wave fields and power deposition are clearly observed and keep consistency in helicon plasmas due to the eigenmodes of helicon waves. Furthermore, a concave dark area where the wave cannot propagate is observed in the closest magnetic coil case and leads to limited power deposition.

Abstract:The dispersion equation on a cylindrical waveguide having an annular plasma sheet is derived under the condition of limited magnetic field. The influence of different plasma density, thickness, and field intensity on the plasma frequency, especially the plasma thickness on depressive characteristics and interaction growth rate are discussed, and the conclusion is obtained that there is a perfect thickness to get the biggest interaction rate.
