Abstract:In this work, BiVO4 films are firstly synthesized, followed by electrodepositing of Cu2O to construct BiVO4/ Cu2O heterojunction electrodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting. By regulating the electrodeposi-tion potential, it is possible to control that Cu2O is deposited on the surface or inside of BiVO4, which enables them n-type or p-type semiconductivity behavior for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions, respectively. Due to the built-in electric field of p-n heterojunction and the Co-Pi co-catalyst layer, the anodic photocurrent density of optimized BiVO4/Cu2O/Co-Pi photoanode reaches 1.97 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE. In the meantime, the deposition of Cu2O inside BiVO4 has reversed the arrangement of the BiVO4/Cu2O heterogeneous structure. The cathodic photocurrent density of the fabricated BiVO4/Cu2O-C photocathode shows - 2.9 mA cm-2. Furthermore, the unbiased solar tandem cell is fabricated using BiVO4/Cu2O-C photocathode and BiVO4/Cu2O/Co-Pi photoanode, which exhibits 0.1 mA cm-2 in the photoelectrochemical cell without applying any external voltage. Nanostructured TaON/Ta3N5 As a Highly Efficient Type-Ii Heterojunction Photoanode for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Enhancing the charge separation by a semiconductor heterojunction is greatly promising and challenging for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Here, we report for the first time the design and fabrication of a TaON/Ta3N5 heterojunction photoanode, in which the electrode Ta3N5 is the primary light absorber and TaON acts as an electron conductor. By combining the merits of the substantial light harvesting of Ta3N5 with the excellent charge transport capability of TaON, the TaON/Ta3N5 heterojunction photoanode, without any co-catalysts, shows a 350 mV negative shift of photocurrent onset potential to 0.65 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) compared to that of the Ta3N5 photoanode. The design and fabrication scheme can be readily extended to other (oxy)nitride semiconductors for heterojunction construction.

Abstract:Achieving highly effective water splitting based on conventional TiO2 photoanode is challenging due to its poor visible light response and low electrical conductivity. Herein, a Bi2MoO6/TiO2 heterojunction with a suitable band structure is constructed to broaden light absorption and accelerate oxidation kinetics. In particular, the highest photocurrent density (0.35 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE) of Bi2MoO6/TiO2 is 2.1 times higher than that of pristine TiO2. The integrated Bi2MoO6 nanoflakes enrich more reactive sites and charge transfer tunnels. The surface hole injection efficiency and electron lifetime of Bi2MoO6/TiO2 are 1.4 and 5.5 times larger than those of bare TiO2, respectively. Additionally, the activation energy and charge transfer resistance of Bi2MoO6/TiO2 electrodes are decreased remarkably, dramatically promoting the separation of electron-hole pairs. This work offers a novel strategy for TiO2-based heterojunction with great potential for application in photoelectrochemical water splitting.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical water splitting for hydrogen and oxygen evolution by a TiO2 photoanode is a promising strategy for clean energy generation. The BiVO4 decorated N-Doped TiO2 nanotubes (BiVO4/TiO2–N) were synthesized by the anodization and hydrothermal procedure. The physical and chemical characterization indicates that the BiVO4 nanoparticles are successfully decorated on the surface of the TiO2–N nanotubes (∼600 nm) to form the heterojunction structure. After the nitrogen doping and BiVO4 modification of TiO2, the UV–visible light absorption ability is broadened, the band gap energy shifts from 3.2 to around 2.82 eV, and the injection and separation efficiency of charge carriers is increased. Nitrogen doping and BiVO4 modification have little effect on TiO2 crystallization. The optimal photocurrent density of BiVO4/TiO2–N reached 1.02 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE, which is about 1.76-fold more than that of the TiO2 photoanodes. The mechanism studies for BiVO4/TiO2–N indicate that the key factors for boosting PEC performance are the light absorption and the charge separation enhancement by the N-doping and the n–n heterojunction by BiVO4 with the TiO2 photoanode. The mechanism for the BiVO4/TiO2–N photoanode during the PEC water splitting process is proposed for further understanding and designation.

Abstract:BiVO4/CuBi2O4 photoanodes were fabricated by depositing CuBi2O4 layers on top of BiVO4 layers while employing a solution-based deposition technique. Carrier separation and transfer are facilitated by the heterojunction that forms between BiVO4 and CuBi2O4, which significantly raises carrier density. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), UV–VIS absorption spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed for the characterization of the photoelectrode. The heterojunction photoelectrode demonstrated enhanced photoelectrochemical activity in comparison to BiVO4 alone, with the maximum photocurrent density of 1.15 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE. The improvement is attributed to decreased recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes and improved charge separation and transport in the heterostructure. By the generation of heterojunctions, the current work offers a new avenue for the design and construction of photoanodes with high charge separation efficiencies. This may be useful for the further enhancement of PEC water-splitting performances.

Enhanced Charge Separation in Nanoporous BiVO4 by External Electron Transport Layer Boosts Solar Water Splitting

Abstract:Abstract The optimization of charge transport with electron‐hole separation directed toward specific redox reactions is a crucial mission for artificial photosynthesis. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 , BVO) is a popular photoanode material for solar water splitting, but it faces tricky challenges in poor charge separation due to its modest charge transport properties. Here, a concept of the external electron transport layer (ETL) is first proposed and demonstrated its effectiveness in suppressing the charge recombination both in bulk and at surface. Specifically, a conformal carbon capsulation applied on BVO enables a remarkable increase in the charge separation efficiency, thanks to its critical roles in passivating surface charge‐trapping sites and building external conductance channels. Through decorated with an oxygen evolution catalyst to accelerate surface charge transfer, the carbon‐encased BVO (BVO@C) photoanode manifests durable water splitting over 120 h with a high current density of 5.9 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under 1 sun irradiation (100 mW cm −2 , AM 1.5 G), which is an activity‐stability trade‐off record for single BVO light absorber. This work opens up a new avenue to steer charge separation via external ETL for solar fuel conversion.

Ultrathin layer TAFC on BiVO4 with ligand-to-metal charge transfer enhances built-in electric field for boosting photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Abstract:To reveal the mechanism of charge transfer between interfaces of BiVO4-based heterogeneous materials in photoelectrochemical water splitting system, the cocatalyst was grown in situ using tannic acid (TA) as a ligand and Fe and Co ions as metal centers (TAFC), and then uniformly and ultra-thinly coated on BiVO4 to form photoanodes. The results show that the BiVO4/TAFC achieves a superior photocurrent density (4.97 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE). The charge separation and charge injection efficiencies were also significantly higher, 82.0 % and 78.9 %, respectively. From XPS, UPS, KPFM, and density functional theory calculations, Ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) acts as an electron transport highway in TAFC ultrathin layer to promote the concentration of electrons towards metal center, leading to an increase in the work function, which enhances the built-in electric field and further improves the charge transport. This study demonstrated that the LMCT pathway on TA-metal complexes enhances the built-in electric field in BiVO4/TAFC to promote charge transport and thus enhance water oxidation, providing a new understanding of the performance improvement mechanism for the surface-modified composite photoanodes.
Interface Modulation of BiVO4 Based Photoanode with Bi(III)Bi(V)O4 for Enhanced Solar Water Splitting

Abstract:Despite being considered as one of the most promising semiconductor photocatalysts, BiVO4 still suffers the problems of inefficient light harvesting, multiple charge recombination channels and back reactions, restricting its application for solar energy conversion. Here, we demonstrate a unique Bi2O4(400)/BiVO4(040) heterojunction prepared via an oxidation conversion process, which dramatically accelerated the interfacial charge transfer compared to pure BiVO4. Furthermore, with Mo doping, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) loading and Ni-FeOOH co-catalyst deposition, the resulting Bi2O4/Mo-BiVO4/CQDs/Ni-FeOOH photoanode reaches a remarkable photocurrent density of 6.7 mA/cm(2) at 1.23 V vs. RHE under AM 1.5G irradiation in the absence of hole scavengers. Our findings demonstrate that proper material interface engineering together with composition tuning provides a viable route to achieve highly efficient solar water splitting. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. Boosting charge separation and transfer at the boron-triggered BiVO 4 interface for efficient and stable solar water splitting

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a promising strategy for solar energy conversion and storage. However, poor charge transfer and sluggish water oxidation reaction restrain the PEC performance. Herein, we propose a simple and effective interface etching strategy on the semiconductor surface to modulate the photoanode/cocatalyst interface, following by the decoration of NiFeBi oxygen evolution catalyst (OEC) for significantly improved oxygen evolution activity and stability of the BiVO 4 photoanode. The resultant photoanode achieves a record photocurrent density of 6.33 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V RHE under one sun illumination, over approximately 3.63 times higher than that of the pristine BiVO 4 . The applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 2.3% can be attained with showing a good durability of 40 h. Systematic studies have demonstrated that the introduction of electron-deficient state of B accelerates the surface trapping hole and the charge transfer, which enhances the interfacial coupling between BiVO 4 and NiFeBi OEC, and strongly drives the hole from the BiVO 4 to the NiFeBi surface for capable water oxidation. Density functional theory calculations prove that the surface B treatment increases the effective number of reaction paths of OER and the density of electronic states near the Fermi energy level, which improves the electrical conductivity of the BiVO 4 /OEC interface. This work provides a feasible strategy for tailoring the interface engineering to significantly enhance the PEC activity and stability of the photoanodes.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting in a pH-neutral electrolyte has attracted more and more attention in the field of sustainable energy. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is a highly promising photoanode material for PEC water splitting. Additionally, cobaltous phosphate (CoPi) is a material that can be synthesized from Earth's rich materials and operates stably in pH-neutral conditions. Herein, we propose a strategy to enhance the charge transport ability and improve PEC performance by electrodepositing the in situ synthesis of a CoPi layer on the BiVO4. With the CoPi co-catalyst, the water oxidation reaction can be accelerated and charge recombination centers are effectively passivated on BiVO4. The BiVO4/CoPi photoanode shows a significantly enhanced photocurrent density (Jph) and applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE), which are 1.8 and 3.2 times higher than those of a single BiVO4 layer, respectively. Finally, the FTO/BiVO4/CoPi photoanode displays a photocurrent density of 1.39 mA cm−2 at 1.23 VRHE, an onset potential (Von) of 0.30 VRHE, and an ABPE of 0.45%, paving a potential path for future hydrogen evolution by solar-driven water splitting.

Abstract:Dual incorporation of Au and Co(OH)x cooperative modification for BiVO4 photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting. The resulting AuCo(OH)x/BiVO4 heterojunction photoanode demonstrates an excellent photocurrent density of 6.2 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus RHE as well as outstanding stability with 42 h. Photoelectrochemical solar to hydrogen production is a promising way to achieve carbon neutrality, but severe charge recombination in photoanodes limits the conversion efficiency. Herein, Au nanoparticles and Co(OH)x co‐sensitized bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) to construct AuCo(OH)x/BiVO4 photoanode for significantly enhancing the performance of photoelectrochemical water splitting. This process significantly improves the bulk charge carrier separation efficiency, the surface kinetics of water oxidation, and the electron density of BiVO4 photoanode through Au surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and Co(OH)x oxygen evolution catalysts effect. Additionally, the enhancement of the *O and the *OOH generation accelerate the oxygen evolution reaction kinetics. Consequently, the constructed AuCo(OH)x/BiVO4 photoanode demonstrates an excellent photocurrent of 6.2 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode and a stable continuous output within 42 h. This work contributes to developing high‐efficiency and high‐stability photoanodes for solar H2 production through SPR effect and oxygen evolution catalysts.

Abstract:The BiVO4/Bi2Mo2O9 heterojunction is prepared by a controllable successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. Attributing to the interfacial charge redistribution, an outward built‐in electric filed is formed, which can enhance the photogenerated carrier's anisotropic transfer. The BiVO4/Bi2Mo2O9 heterojunction exhibits an outstanding photocurrent density of 0.9 mA cm−2, implying 3 times improvement compared to BiVO4. Developing an advanced strategy to decrease the charge recombination of BiVO4 is a vital requirement to boost charge transfer for photoelectrochemical water oxidation. Herein, a type II BiVO4/Bi2Mo2O9 heterojunction is successfully synthesized on fluorine‐doped tin oxide substrate by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. Thanks to the Fermi‐level energy difference of 275 mV between BiVO4 and Bi2Mo2O9, an outward built‐in electric filed pointing from Bi2Mo2O9 to BiVO4 is induced, which accelerates the directional flowing of photogenerated electron and hole. Such a unique design structure fastens the electron migration from BiVO4 to Bi2Mo2O9, and the holes will transfer to the surface to participate in water oxidation. The longer lifetime (9.2 ns) by time‐resolved transient photoluminescence signifies that the Bi2Mo2O9 can boost interfacial carriers' anisotropic migration; the surface charge transfer rate of BiVO4/Bi2Mo2O9 is up to 387.6 s−1 (1.4 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)). The BiVO4/Bi2Mo2O9 heterojunction exhibits a remarkable charge separation efficiency of 64% and outstanding photocurrent density of 0.9 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus RHE.

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) with a narrow band gap was considered as one of the most desirable matrices for the photoelectrode in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting system. However, the serious recombination rate of photogenerated charges in BiVO4 causes the practical PEC efficiency to be significantly lower than the theoretical value. Herein, we provide a simple route for modification of BiVO4-based photoanodes with Ni-NDAD to promote charge separation and accelerate water oxidation kinetics. As a result, the Ni-NDAD/BiVO4 photoelectrodes deliver a high photocurrent density of 5.6 mA cm–2 (1.23 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode) and an incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency of 80% (460 nm), which were around 3.5- and 5.3-fold higher than that of pristine BiVO4, respectively. In addition, the introduction of Ni-NDAD on BiVO4 could trap photogenerated holes transferred from BiVO4, thus allowing significant acceleration of water oxidation kinetics and overall improvement in the performance of the whole BiVO4-based PEC water splitting system. Furthermore, the Ni-NDAD/BiVO4 photoanode also displayed high PEC catalytic activity for chlortetracycline (CTC) removal in the presence of persulfate (PS), achieving an 89.19% degradation efficiency within 30 min. This work provides a promising design strategy for efficient photogenerated charge separation to improve PEC water splitting and organic contaminant removal.

Rational design of electrocatalysts for simultaneously promoting bulk charge separation and surface charge transfer in solar water splitting photoelectrodes

Abstract:For a photoanode, a large overpotential for water oxidation, which limits the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency, may be caused by slow water oxidation kinetics and the recombination of photo-induced electrons and holes. Herein, taking flat and thin BiVO4 photoanodes as an example, the composite AgOx/NiOx electrocatalyst was found to promote not only the water oxidation kinetics, but also the bulk charge separation. As a result, the surface charge injection efficiency (eta(inj)) and the bulk charge separation efficiency (eta(sep)) of BiVO4 photoanodes were improved by the composite AgOx/NiOx electrocatalyst. Photo-assisted electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was employed to illustrate the significantly reduced surface charge transfer resistance of the BiVO4/AgOx/NiOx sample at the interface between the photoanode surface and the electrolyte. Analysis of the surface potential changes obtained from photo-assisted Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) revealed that the surface photovoltage (SPV) of the BiVO4/AgOx/NiOx photoanode is higher than those of BiVO4/AgOx and BiVO4/NiOx, representing its large band bending region for bulk charge separation. The open circuit photovoltage (OCP) measurements also demonstrated the superior charge separation ability of the BiVO4/AgOx/NiOx photoanode. The possible working mechanism is that one component of the composite AgOx/NiOx electrocatalyst may stabilize the high valence states of the other metal ions, which is beneficial for the formation of water oxidation active sites and the extension of the band bending region.
Structural Engineering of BiVO4/CoFe MOF Heterostructures Boosting Charge Transfer for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Here a structural engineering design to coat an ultrathin bimetal‐organic framework (MOF) layer on the BiVO4 photoanode is demonstrated. This MOF layer can shut down the hole‐transfer channels from the BiVO4 to its surface trap states, build heterojunction with BiVO4 to provide strong carrier drive force and accelerate surface reaction kinetics as a cocatalyst, achieving highly efficient water oxidation performance. Boosting charge separation and transfer of photoanodes is crucial for providing high viability of photoelectrochemical hydrogen (H2) generation. Here, a structural engineering strategy is designed and synthesized for uniformly coating an ultrathin CoFe bimetal‐organic framework (CoFe MOF) layer over a BiVO4 photoanode for boosted charge separation and transfer. The photocurrent density of the optimized BiVO4/CoFe MOF(NA) photoanode reaches a value of 3.92 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), up to 6.03 times that of pristine BiVO4, due to the greatly increased efficiency of charge transfer and separation. In addition, this photoanode records one onset potential that is considerably shifted negatively when compared to BiVO4. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that the CoFe MOF(NA) prolongs charge recombination lifetime by blocking the hole‐transfer pathway from the BiVO4 to its surface trap states. This work sheds light on boosting charge separation and transfer through structural engineering to enhance the photocurrent of photoanodes for solar H2 production.

Modulating Interfacial Charge Transfer Behavior through the Construction of a Hetero-Interface for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Surface-coupled transition metal oxyhydroxide (TMOOH) on semiconductor (SC)-based photoanodes are effective strategies for improving photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. However, there is a substantial difference between the current density and theoretical value due to the inevitable interfacial charge recombination of SC/TMOOH. Here, we employ BiVO4/FeNiOOH as a model, constructing the BiVO4/MnOx/CoOx/FeNiOOH integrated system by introducing a novel hetero-interface regulation unit, i.e., MnOx/CoOx. As expected, the optimized integrated system demonstrates a photocurrent density as high as 5.0 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under 1 sun AM 1.5G illumination, accompanied by 12-h stability. The detailed electrochemical analysis and intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) have confirmed that the high PEC performance mainly originates from the hetero-interface structure, which not only suppresses the interfacial charge recombination by accelerating the photogenerated hole transfer kinetics from BiVO4 to FeNiOOH but promotes the kinetics of surface oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Notably, these findings can also be extended to other structures (CeOx/CoOx), reflecting its universality. This finding has provided a new insight into the highly efficient solar energy conversion in the SC/TMOOH system.

Abstract:A photochemical etching process is developed to produce an asymmetric BiVO4/BiOx homologous heterojunction photoanode from a faceted BiVO4 crystal arrays, achieving an over three times enhancement on short‐circuit photocurrent density and 75 mV enlargement on open‐circuit voltage due to the formation of the strong p–n junction in its interface region, which promotes carrier separation and enlarges photovoltage. BiVO4 as a promising semiconductor candidate of the photoanode for solar driven water oxidation always suffers from poor charge carrier transport property and photo‐induced self‐corrosion. Herein, by intentionally taking advantage of the photo‐induced self‐corrosion process, a controllable photochemical etching method is developed to rationally construct a photoanode of BiVO4/BiOx asymmetric heterojunction from faceted BiVO4 crystal arrays. Compared with the BiVO4 photoanode, the resulting BiVO4/BiOx photoanode gains over three times enhancement in short‐circuit photocurrent density (≈3.2 mA cm−2) and ≈75 mV negative shift of photocurrent onset potential. This is due to the formation of the strong interacted homologous heterojunction, which promotes photo‐carrier separation and enlarges photovoltage across the interface. Remarkably, the photocurrent density can remain at ≈2.0 mA cm−2 even after 12 h consecutive operation, while only ≈0.1 mA cm−2 is left for the control photoanode of BiVO4. Moreover, the Faraday efficiency for water splitting is determined to be nearly 100% for the BiVO4/BiOx photoanode. The controllable photochemical etching process may shed light on the construction of homologous heterojunction on other photoelectrode materials that have similar properties to BiVO4.

Abstract:We herein demonstrate the unusual effectiveness of two strategies in combination to enhance photoelectrochemical water splitting. First, the work function adjustment via molybdenum (Mo) doping significantly reduces the interfacial energy loss and increases the open-circuit photovoltage of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) photoelectrochemical cells. Second, the creation and optimization of the heterojunction of boron (B) doping carbon nitride (C3N4) and Mo doping BiVO4 to enforce directional charge transfer, accomplished by work function adjustment via B doping for C3N4, substantially boost the charge separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs at the B-C3N4 and Mo-BiVO4 interface. The synergy between the above efforts have significantly reduced the onset potential, and enhanced charge separation and optical properties of the BiVO4-based photoanode, culminating in achieving a record applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 2.67% at 0.54 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode. This work sheds light on designing and fabricating the semiconductor structures for the next-generation photoelectrodes.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient and stable photoelectrode materials is of significant importance for the conversion of solar energy into chemical fuels. Herein, a novel Ni@NiO/BiVO4 photoanode is designed and prepared for efficient water splitting by the deposition of Ni particles on the surface of BiVO4 with subsequent thermal treatment. The integration of the Ni@NiO core–shell structure can efficiently passivate the surface states and accelerate the oxygen evolution kinetics along with the in situ-generated NiOOH, consequently contributing to the significantly improved charge separation efficiency. The resulting Ni@NiO/BiVO4 photoelectrode enabled a photocurrent density of 2.6 mA/cm2 with a surface charge separation efficiency of nearly 80% at the potential of 1.23 VRHE—much better than the unmodified BiVO4 (1.8 mA/cm2, 64%).
