Abstract:In this study, we characterized the variations in ionospheric irregularities and medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) simultaneously at mid-latitudes over central China based on high-fidelity observations of the total electron content (TEC) from a Beidou geostationary satellite and explored their quantitative relationships during 2016–2017. Ionospheric irregularities generally occurred during 20:00–03:00 local time (LT) in summer and reached a peak rate of ~30% at night; during the daytime in summer, the irregularities had a weak occurrence peak of not more than ~10%. The occurrence rate of nighttime MSTIDs showed a major peak of ~45% in summer and a secondary peak of ~20% in winter, whereas the main peak in winter was ~30% during the daytime. Additionally, the period, velocity, wavelength, and propagation direction of nighttime MSTIDs were different from those of daytime MSTIDs. There was a strong correlation between ionospheric irregularities and MSTIDs at night when the rate of ionospheric irregularities occurring during MSTIDs reached 90%. However, the situation during the daytime was different; the rate of ionospheric irregularities associated with MSTIDs did not exceed ~20%. These results indicate that nighttime MSTIDs could play an important role in producing ionospheric irregularities, but daytime MSTIDs do not. The different diurnal relationships between ionospheric irregularities and MSTIDs can be attributed to the different generation processes of MSTIDs. Our results from Beidou GEO TEC observations provide a new perspective for understanding ionospheric irregularities and MSTIDs and their quantitative relationships.

A statistical analysis of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances during 2014–2017 using the Hong Kong CORS network

Abstract:We report a statistical study of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) during 2014–2017 in the low-latitude China region using the Hong Kong Continuously Operating Reference Stations network with a baseline length of 10–15 km. Polynomial fitting and the multichannel maximum entropy method are utilized to derive MSTID parameters from global positioning system total electron content data. We find that MSTIDs can be sorted into three types in this region. One type is daytime MSTIDs, which are mainly distributed during 1000–1700 local time (LT) in spring, autumn and winter. The second type is nighttime MSTIDs, which mainly occur from 2200 to 0300 LT in spring and summer. The third type is morning MSTIDs, mainly occurring from 0500 to 0700 LT in spring and autumn. No clear difference in the MSTID parameters is distinguishable between the cyclone period and non-cyclone period, which may be due to the distance restriction for cyclone identification and different propagation distances of the primary gravity waves (GWs) and secondary GWs.

Abstract:In this study, coordinated airglow imager, GPS total electron content (TEC), and Beidou geostationary orbit (GEO) TEC observations for the first time are used to investigate the characteristics of nighttime medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) over central China. The results indicated that the features of nighttime MSTIDs from three types of observations are generally consistent, whereas the nighttime MSTID features from the Beidou GEO TEC are in better agreement with those from airglow images as compared with the GPS TEC, given that the nighttime MSTID characteristics from GPS TEC are significantly affected by Doppler effect due to satellite movement. It is also found that there are three peaks in the seasonal variations of the occurrence rate of nighttime MSTIDs in 2016. Our study revealed that the Beidou GEO satellites provided fidelity TEC observations to study the ionospheric variability.
Latitudinal Variations of Daytime Periodic Ionospheric Disturbances From Beidou GEO TEC Observations Over China

Abstract:Using total electron content (TEC) data from a chain of Beidou geostationary satellite TEC receivers along similar to 110 degrees E during 2016-2019, the local time, seasonal, and latitudinal occurrence characteristics of periodic TEC perturbation associated with medium scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) are investigated. The results show that the daytime periodic ionospheric disturbances appear prominently in winter with dominant periods similar to 30-40 min. An interesting feature is that the latitudinal variations of periodic ionospheric disturbances show two occurrence peaks at higher and lower latitudes, with a minimum centering around 30 degrees N-33 degrees N, where almost no periodic ionospheric disturbance was detected under the threshold of absolute TEC perturbation greater than 0.3 TECU. Further, using two short-baseline GNSS receiver arrays at middle and low latitudes, the propagation characteristics of the periodic ionospheric disturbances were derived. The median values of propagation azimuth, phase velocity, and period of the ionospheric disturbances at middle (low) latitude are 153.1 degrees (157.4 degrees), 36.7 min (33 min), and 97.2 m/s (62.5 m/s), respectively, showing typical characteristics of MSTIDs. We surmise that the perturbation source and background electron density could play important roles in causing the latitudinal variation of daytime periodic ionospheric disturbances along 110 degrees E.

Abstract:Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) Doppler measurements are immune to cycle slips, providing a robust way to detect ionospheric variations. In this study, we explore the feasibility of utilizing GNSS Doppler measurements to detect medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbance (MSTID). First, the method for MSTID detection based on Doppler measurements is introduced. Subsequently, the theoretical formula on the relationship between MSTID signals extracted from Doppler measurements and those obtained from carrier-phase observations is deduced. To validate the method, data from HKSL GNSS station located in Hong Kong during 2018 and 2023 are utilized. The results show the theoretical formula is valid, and the occurrences of MSTID events detected by Doppler measurements are totally consistent to that of by phase measurements. Furthermore, the characteristics of the MSTID occurrence rate closely resemble those observed in previous studies. These results confirm the feasibility and reliability of using GNSS Doppler measurements for MSTID detection.

Abstract:Large-scale ionospheric irregularities, which occurred on September 8, 2017, were detected by the ionosonde and the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver network in this letter. The Wuhan ionospheric sounding system (WISS), deployed at Puer (PUR, 22.7 degrees N, 101.05 degrees E), Leshan (LSH, 29.6 degrees N, 103.7 degrees E), and Zhangye (ZHY, 39.4 degrees N, 100.13 degrees E), detected these large-scale ionospheric irregularities. The 2-D maps of the rate of the GNSS total electron content (TEC) index (ROTI) further confirmed that the large-scale ionospheric irregularities can cover a broad area (from the equator to middle latitude, similar to 80 degrees E to similar to 120 degrees E, similar to 20 degrees N to similar to 45 degrees N). The ionospheric variation recorded by the WISS shows that the large-scale ionospheric irregularities were driven by the super eastward electric field, which was formed by the eastward prompt penetration electric field during a storm superimposed on the normal prereversal enhancement during the postsunset hours. Moreover, observations by the WISS show the higher the latitudes at which the ionospheric irregularities/spread F occurred, the shorter the duration time.
Morphology and Climatology of Nighttime Periodic Ionospheric TEC Disturbances Associated With MSTIDs Over China

Abstract:In this study, the morphology and climatology of the nighttime periodic disturbances associated with medium‐scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) are investigated over the entire China sector from January 2014 to August 2017, using data from global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) receivers. Firstly, a comparative case analysis of propagation characteristics reveals the complexity and day‐to‐day variations of nighttime MSTID activity. The main statistical findings indicate that these periodic disturbances predominantly occur during the summer months, with a higher occurrence rate during solar minimum. In summer, the disturbances occur more frequently in regions with lower latitudes (20–35°N) and tend to exhibit an extended duration. In the meantime, some disturbances are also detected at much lower latitudes (<20°N), with noticeable longitudinal differences. Additionally, there are two peaks in the geographic distribution of disturbances, located in the sector of 90–100°E and 105–125°E at lower latitudes, respectively. The distinct spatiotemporal evolution patterns of the two peak disturbance regions suggest that their formation mechanisms should be different. The disturbances in the eastern region exhibit similarities with electrified MSTIDs, which are closely related to Perkins instability, whereas the western disturbance region does not display apparent movement, but exhibits a higher occurrence rate and longer durations, which may be attributed to the frequent upward propagation of GWs in the southeastern region of the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau.

Daytime Ionospheric Longitudinal Gradients Seen in the Observations from a Regional BeiDou GEO Receiver Network

Abstract:Many studies have devoted to the longitudinal variations of the ionosphere globally. However, the ionospheric longitudinal variations in a small region are rarely reported. In this paper, we for the first time use total electron content (TEC) data from a BeiDou geostationary orbit (GEO) receiver network to observe and investigate ionospheric longitudinal variations within the zonal scale of 1000km over Central China (112 degrees-122 degrees E, 27 degrees-31 degrees N; 20 degrees-24 degrees N magnetic latitudes) during the period from June 2015 to December 2016. The BeiDou GEO TEC provides a good data set to study longitudinal variations, compared with non-GEO TEC, without contaminating the spatial variations and elevation changes due to satellite motion. Pronounced daytime longitudinal gradients within the distance of 1000km are present in BeiDou GEO TEC. It was found that the TEC is generally larger in the west than in the east. The maximum TEC longitudinal gradient can reach 45 total electron content unit (TECU; 1TECU=10(16)elm(-2)). For most events, the obvious daytime longitudinal gradients are accompanied by the TEC enhancement. The occurrence rate of daytime longitudinal gradients under different geomagnetic activities is similar, whereas strong daytime longitudinal gradients mainly occur under the moderate and strong disturbance geomagnetic activities. These observations suggest that the electric field disturbances could have significant effects on producing the observed ionospheric longitudinal gradients.

Abstract:The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is well recognized as a valuable tool for studying ionospheric variation, providing a means to measure variations in the Total Electron Content (TEC) of the ionosphere. In this manuscript, we focus specifically on the use of GNSS networks to study ionospheric diurnal variation over China, highlighting some of the key findings and challenges in this area. We begin by describing the basic principles of GNSS-based TEC measurements. We then analyze ionospheric diurnal variation using about 320 GNSS stations in China, including the Southern, Middle, and Northern areas. We also discuss some of the challenges associated with GNSS-based TEC measurement and analysis, such as the effects of receiver and satellite biases and understanding of spatial-temporal TEC variation. Finally, we highlight the sunset enhancement and scintillation of GNSS-based ionospheric diurnal variation research. Overall, this abstract provides a valuable overview of the use of GNSS networks for studying ionospheric diurnal variation and its potential applications for improving space weather forecasting and mitigating the effects of ionospheric disturbances on GNSS-based navigation systems.
Monitoring Seismo-TEC Perturbations Utilizing the Beidou Geostationary Satellites

Abstract:Electromagnetic signals transmitted from the Beidou geostationary satellites can be utilized to monitor changes in ionospheric total electron contents (TECs) at motionless ionospheric pierce points (IPPs) over the Earth's surface 24 h a day. The TEC perturbations at close IPPs detected via distinct horizontal azimuths and elevation angles can be examined by utilizing different measuring geometries formed by the selected geostationary satellites and ground-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations. The M6.9 Menyuan earthquake occurred in northwest China on 7 January 2022. We collected TEC perturbations associated with the Menyuan earthquake at those motionless IPPs to examine the capability of the TEC measurements utilizing distinct horizontal azimuths and elevation angles. The experimental results show that the TEC perturbations associated with the earthquake traveled away from the area around the epicenter with velocities of ~800 m/s and ~1000 m/s in the ionosphere. The traveling TEC perturbations were consistently observed in different geometries. Such novel results show that the pronounced TEC perturbations can be obtained once the satellite hanging high over the Earth's surface in front of the traveling TEC perturbations is selected. This study shows that geostationary satellites provide an excellent opportunity to conduct experiments on the advantage of the TEC observation technology.

Abstract:Geostationary BeiDou satellites monitor the total electron content (TEC) in the ionosphere over certain locations 24 hours per day without interruption and act as ionosphere-based seismometers. The system detected perturbations in TEC before both the M6.1 Dali and M7.3 Qinghai earthquakes that occurred during the night of 21–22 May 2021. The TEC perturbations reside mainly over an area within a distance of ∼700 km from the epicentres of the earthquakes. The standing waves revealed the persistence of a subsurface wave source before the occurrences of the earthquakes, which differs from the co-seismic ionospheric distributions propagating away from the epicentres. The resident waves in TEC and ground vibrations share a frequency of ∼0.004 Hz, which can be attributed to the resonant coupling between the lithosphere and ionosphere.

Abstract:Spread F (SF) in the ionosphere can be observed frequently in mid-latitude regions. It is suggested that atmospheric gravity waves play a significant role for the seeding of mid-latitude SF. Previous research suggested that the source of travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) over China is in the southeastern and northeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, however, until now there have been no ground-based observations of the ionosphere in this region. Recently, an advanced digital ionosonde was installed at Zhangye station (39.2°N, 100.54°E, Dip Lat 29.6°N) in the northeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is an opportunity to verify the effect of gravity waves on the formation of mid-latitude SF by comparing it with observations in other regions of the Chinese sector. In this study, statistical analysis of SF recorded at Zhangye station during 2017–2022 was carried out. Results show that diurnal, seasonal and solar cycle characteristics of the occurrence rate of SF are similar with previous studies. At Zhangye station, the maximum occurrence rate of SF is during the post-midnight period in summer and winter. The occurrence rate of SF events have a negative relationship with solar activity. There is no obvious relationship between the occurrence rate of SF and geomagnetic activity. Comparing observations of other stations in the mid-latitude region, we found that the occurrence rates of SF (the annual maximum rates are from 33.83% to 53.29%) are much higher at Zhangye station. Further studies show that ionospheric disturbances can be observed frequently at Zhangye station, especially in autumn and winter. Gravity waves/TIDs in the northeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are suggested to explain the abnormal higher occurrence rate of SF at Zhangye station.

Abstract:Statistical analyses were conducted to investigate the nighttime medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) for the first time by using airglow images and Global Positioning System (GPS) data over central China during 2013-2015. Our results show that the phase fronts of perturbations are aligned from northwest to southeast direction and propagate toward the southwest direction. The characteristics of the nighttime MSTIDs observed by OI 630.0nm images are consistent with those of the nighttime MSTIDs obtained from the GPS data. The phase velocity, period, wavelength, and amplitude of nighttime MSTIDs are 50-150m/s, 0.5-1.5h, 150-400km, and 2%-15%, respectively, as measured from 630.0nm images and GPS data. In addition, we utilized the simultaneous observations from OI 630.0nm and OI 557.7 nm images to explore the relationship between nighttime MSTIDs and gravity waves (<100km) in the mesopause. It is found that the nighttime MSTIDs frequently occurred in the summer solstice, which was not consistent with the occurrence of gravity wave observed in the mesopause. Our results indicate that the nighttime MSTIDs may be generated by the coupling of electrodynamic processes rather than be trigged by gravity waves from the lower atmosphere.
The Simultaneous Observations of Nighttime Ionospheric E Region Irregularities and F Region Medium‐Scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances in Midlatitude China

Abstract:Coupling of ionospheric E and F regions in the midlatitude region has been studied for a couple of years. In this study, we investigate the nighttime disturbances in E and F regions in midlatitude China region by using Wuhan ionosonde, Wuhan very high frequency coherent scatter radar, and Mengcheng airglow imager. We present two case studies of simultaneous observations of diffuse sporadic E (Es) layers, quasiperiodic echoes of E region irregularities, spread F, and medium‐scale traveling ionospheric disturbances. Results of case studies indicate that diffuse Es layers and E region irregularities can be associated with the F region medium‐scale traveling ionospheric disturbances or spread F through polarization electric field mapping along the field lines. We then analyze the data set of Wuhan ionosonde and Wuhan very high frequency radar during 2015–2016 and find that the coincidence of diffuse Es layers, quasiperiodic echoes of E region irregularities, and spread F is high at local nighttime. Our results provide the first observational evidence in midlatitude China region to support the concept that polarization electric field generated in the E region irregularities could map along the magnetic field lines and excite electrodynamic disturbances in F region, such as Perkins instability.
Imaging of the large-scale ionospheric disturbances induced by seismic waves using GPS network in China

Abstract:Rayleigh waves travel along the Earth's surface, with vertical ground displacements to excite far field disturbances in the atmosphere and ionosphere. This study uses massive total electron content (TEC) data from the GPS receiver network in China to portray the ionospheric disturbances after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. The results reveal that, the Rayleigh waves reach far field and the energy propagates upward into the ionosphere through the lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling, hence causes large-scale TEC disturbances over China. With dense network in central and eastern China, two-dimensional maps of the TEC disturbances are achieved, showing large-scale zonal band structures. The wave fronts are oriented in the northwest-southeast direction at mid-latitude, then rotate to east-west at lower latitudes. The rotation is expected due to the neutral-ion coupling, which effectively drives plasma motion along geomagnetic field lines in favor of southward propagation of the ionospheric disturbances. This is the first two-dimensional imaging of large-scale seismo-ionospheric disturbances caused by far field Rayleigh waves.
Daytime periodic wave-like structures in the ionosphere observed at low latitudes over the Asian-Australian sector using total electron content from Beidou geostationary satellites

Abstract:Daytime periodic wave-like structures are statistically analyzed for the first time in the low-latitude ionosphere over the Asian-Australian sector using total electron content from Beidou geostationary satellites during 2016-2017. These structures have periods of about 18-28 min, which frequently occur during 11:00-17:00 local time in the winter at latitudes ranging between 17 and 25 degrees N (10-18 degrees N magnetic latitude [MLAT]) in the Northern Hemisphere, where they have a maximum occurrence rate of 80% at similar to 21 degrees N (14 degrees N MLAT). In the Southern Hemisphere, daytime periodic wave-like structures are also observed during 11:00-15:00 local time in the winter within latitudes ranging between 6.0 and 11.1 degrees S (15.4-21.6 degrees S MLAT), although the peak occurrence rate is only approximately 40%. Compared with stratospheric gravity waves (GWs), the seasonal and latitudinal variations of daytime periodic wave-like structures are generally consistent with those of stratospheric GWs. This gives a possible argument that daytime periodic wave-like structures in the low-latitude ionosphere could be generated in the low-latitude ionosphere and triggered by GWs from the lower atmosphere.

Abstract:The position between BeiDou geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) satellites and ground-based receiving stations can roughly be considered to be constant with negligible fluctuations; thus, the total electron content (TEC) data over a fixed ionospheric piercing point (IPP) can be continuously acquired, which is advantageous for monitoring ionospheric disturbances. Focused on the Jiuzhaigou Ms7.0 earthquake that occurred on 8 August 2017, the TEC data inverted by the BeiDou GEO satellite were analyzed to extract ionospheric disturbances potentially associated with the earthquake. It was found that significant anomalies in ionospheric TEC occurred 10–11 days, 6–7 days, and 1–9 h prior to the earthquake, which was mainly located in the southeast and southwest directions within about 2500 km distance from the epicenter. Comparing the spatial and temporal characteristics between the ionospheric disturbance and the radon gas near the surface, the atmospheric electric field, and the spectrum of TEC data, it was considered that the chemical and acoustic–gravity wave pathway may play an important role in the lithosphere–atmosphere–ionosphere coupling (LAIC) mechanism.
