Abstract:ZnO nanoflowers/Zn (ZnO NFs/Zn) electrodes were synthesized through electrochemical anodizing of Zn sheets followed by calcination at different temperatures to be used as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. The morphological studies showed that the ZnO NFs/Zn electrodes have suitable nanostructures with low volumetric contraction/expansion during successive alloying/de-alloying processes. The discharge capacities of ZnO NFs/Zn electrode calcinated at 300 °C at the current density of 0.03 mA cm −2 in second and third cycles were 2.2 and 1.3 mAh cm −2 and its charge capacities at the same cycles were 1.2 and 0.9 mAh cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, MWCNTs/ZnO NFs/Zn electrode with highly ordered conductive framework for Li + ion diffusion was fabricated via electrochemical deposition of multiwall carbon nanotubes on ZnO NFs/Zn followed by heat treatment at 300 °C. The electrochemical investigations of the MWCNTs/ZnO NFs/Zn electrode as an anode material in a lithium-ion battery revealed higher columbic efficiency and charge/discharge stability compared to ZnO NFs/Zn electrode. The discharge capacities of MWCNTs/ZnO NFs/Zn electrode at the current density of 0.03 mA cm −2 in the second and third cycles were 1.4 and 1.4 mAh cm −2 and its charge capacities in the same cycles were 1.2 and 1.2 mAh cm −2 , respectively. Improving the stability and efficiency of the modified MWCNTs/ZnO NFs/Zn electrode was attributed to the positive effect of carbon nanotubes in the improvement of electronic conductivity as well as resisting the volumetric changes of ZnO nanowires during the lithiation/delithiation processes.
