Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a form of technology in which 3D physical models are created. It has been used in a variety of surgical specialities ranging from cranio-maxillo-facial to orthopaedic surgery and is currently an area of much interest within the medical profession. Within the field of orthopaedic surgery, 3D printing has several clinical applications including surgical education, surgical planning, manufacture of patient-specific prostheses/patient specific instruments and bone tissue engineering. This article reviews the current practices of 3D printing in orthopaedic surgery in both clinical and pre-clinical settings along with discussing its potential future applications.

Abstract:With advances in both medical imaging and computer programming, two-dimensional axial images can be processed into other reformatted views (sagittal and coronal) and three-dimensional (3D) virtual models that represent a patients' own anatomy. This processed digital information can be analyzed in detail by orthopedic surgeons to perform patient-specific orthopedic procedures. The use of 3D printing is rising and has become more prevalent in medical applications over the last decade as surgeons and researchers are increasingly utilizing the technology's flexibility in manufacturing objects. 3D printing is a type of manufacturing process in which materials such as plastic or metal are deposited in layers to create a 3D object from a digital model. This additive manufacturing method has the advantage of fabricating objects with complex freeform geometry, which is impossible using traditional subtractive manufacturing methods. Specifically in surgical applications, the 3D printing techniques can not only generate models that give a better understanding of the complex anatomy and pathology of the patients and aid in education and surgical training, but can also produce patient-specific surgical guides or even custom implants that are tailor-made to the surgical requirements. As the clinical workflow of the 3D printing technology continues to evolve, orthopedic surgeons should embrace the latest knowledge of the technology and incorporate it into their clinical practice for patient-specific orthopedic applications. This paper is written to help orthopedic surgeons stay up-to-date on the emerging 3D technology, starting from the acquisition of clinical imaging to 3D printing for patient-specific applications in orthopedics. It 1) presents the necessary steps to prepare the medical images that are required for 3D printing, 2) reviews the current applications of 3D printing in patient-specific orthopedic procedures, 3) discusses the potential advantages and limitations of 3D-printed custom orthopedic implants, and 4) suggests the directions for future development. The 3D printing technology has been reported to be beneficial in patient-specific orthopedics, such as in the creation of anatomic models for surgical planning, education and surgical training, patient-specific instruments, and 3D-printed custom implants. Besides being anatomically conformed to a patient's surgical requirement, 3D-printed implants can be fabricated with scaffold lattices that may facilitate osteointegration and reduce implant stiffness. However, limitations including high cost of the implants, the lead time in manufacturing, and lack of intraoperative flexibility need to be addressed. New biomimetic materials have been investigated for use in 3D printing. To increase utilization of 3D printing technology in orthopedics, an all-in-one computer platform should be developed for easy planning and seamless communications among different care providers. Further studies are needed to investigate the real clinical efficacy of 3D printings in orthopedic applications.
3D printing application for orthopedic pediatric surgery – a systematic review

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to present a systematic review of the latest scientific literature, in the context of pediatric orthopedics, on the development by additive manufacturing of anatomical models, orthoses, surgical guides and prostheses and their clinical applications. Design/methodology/approach Following the current guidelines for systematic reviews, three databases (Elsevier Scopus ® , Clarivate Web of Science TM and USA National Library of Medicine PubMed ® ) were screened using a representative query to find pertinent documents within the timeframe 2016–2023. Among the information, collected across the reviewed documents, the work focused on the 3D printing workflow involving acquisition, elaboration and fabrication stages. Findings Following the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the authors found 20 studies that fitted the defined criteria. The reviewed studies mostly highlighted the positive impact of additive manufacturing in pediatric orthopedic surgery, particularly in orthotic applications where lightweight, ventilated and cost-effective 3D-printed devices demonstrate efficacy comparable to traditional methods, but also underlined the limitations such as printing errors and high printing times. Among the reviewed studies, material extrusion was the most chosen 3D printing technology to manufacture the typical device, particularly with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. Originality/value To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first systematic review which annotates, from a more engineering point of view, the latest literature on the admittance of the clinical application of additive manufacturing (and its effects) within typical pediatric orthopedic treatments workflows.

Abstract:Summary: 3D printing technologies have evolved tremendously over the last decade for uses in orthopaedic surgical applications, including being used to manufacture implants for spine, upper extremity, foot and ankle, oncologic, and traumatic reconstructions. Materials used for 3D-printed orthopaedic devices include metals, degradable and nondegradable polymers, and ceramic composites. There are 2 primary advantages for use of 3D printing technologies for orthopaedics: first, the ability to create complex porous lattices that allow for osseointegration and improved implant stability and second, the enablement of complex geometric designs allowing for patient-specific devices based on preoperative imaging. Given continually evolving technology, and the relatively early stage of the materials and 3D printers themselves, the possibilities for continued innovation in orthopaedics are great.

Abstract:3D printing is an important technology occurs in 1980s,which has been about more than 30 years since the first 3D printing machine was developed.Currently,it develops rapidly and its application scope has been greatly expanded.Its most prominent features are the "personalized" printing and the diversification of "printing ink".The "personalized" printing can make it possible to tailor the biological materials for each patient,and the diversity of "printing ink" can make the technology meeting different clinical needs.3D printing can be divided into four aspects:l) the collection and formation of inage of printing object;2) the treatment and the transformation of the image information;3) printing based on the data formatted;4) the post-treatment and pedormance evaluating of the printing object.At present,the common methods related to orthopaedics include:1) stereolithography appearance;2) selective laser sintering;3) fused deposition modeling;4) laminated object manufacturing;5) the direct metal melting technology (selective laser melting or electron beam melting);6) the ink jet printing technology.A variety of materials have been used in 3D printers,including the natural medical materials like collagen and chitosan,the synthetic polymers like polylactic acid,polyglycolic acid and peek,the bioactive ceramic materials like hydroxyapatite,the medical metal materials like titanium.The 3D printed material are mainly used in the following seven aspects in orthopaedics:1) the preoperative planning,such as the printing of the lesion and resection model;2) operation navigation make the surgery procedure more accurate;3) making the customized prosthesis and implant;4) implanting the external fixation;5) the development of new surgical instruments meets the special needs of patients;6) making the personalized tissue engineering scaffold used in regenerative medicine;7) the development of drug and its release study.

Abstract:Since 1989, three-dimensional (3D) printing has developed rapidly in biomedical engineering because it is individually customizable. By printing medical products at clinics, this powerful tool can be used by doctors, which will enhance the response to surgery and increase the creative freedom of surgeons. In this article, we reviewed the progress of 3D printing in biomedicine with particular emphasis on the types of 3D printing methods that are most suitable for the clinical application, and proposed the concept of Printing@clinic. The four levels of Printing@clinic are discussed, from surgical implants to direct printing during surgery. Three major applications of Printing@clinic, which could be rapidly implemented in the clinical setting, are fabricating prosthesis to assist with surgeries, printing 3D implantable scaffolds, and bioprinting for tissue repair. We believe that Printing@clinic will be an attractive service in the decades to come.

Abstract:3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a technology that uses a variety of adhesive materials such as powdered metal or plastic to construct objects based on digital models. Recently, 3D printing technology has been combined with digital medicine, materials science, cytology, and other multidisciplinary fields, especially in the field of orthopedic built-in objects. The development of advanced 3D printing materials continues to meet the needs of clinical precision medicine and customize the most suitable prosthesis for everyone to improve service life and satisfaction. This article introduces the development of 3D printing technology and different types of materials. We also discuss the shortcomings of 3D printing technology and the current challenges, including the poor bionics of 3D printing products, lack of ideal bioinks, product safety, and lack of market supervision. We also prospect the future development trends of 3D printing.

Abstract:We are in the midst of exciting advancements in new technologies and innovative research in precision medicine. Among these, 3D printing is one of the most frequently seen in clinical orthopaedic settings. This new technique has been adopted in a vast range of applications in spine surgery, such as producing anatomical models, surgical templates, preoperative plans, and spinal implants. Some studies on 3D printing technologies in spine surgery have reported the benefits of this emerging technology with more effective manufacturing, more visualisation for communication, and more precise navigation for screw insertion and osteotomy. In addition, in customised implant design and fabrication processes, 3D printing products with anatomical adaptions and complex porous microstructure show some attractive advantages in terms of fit and osteoinductivity. However, there are still some concerns about the safety and feasibility of the application of 3D printing technology in spine surgery. We review the literature on and share our experiences with the application of 3D printing from the beginning of collaborations between doctors and computer-aided design (CAD) designers to the final follow-up of clinical patients.

Abstract:The repair of critical-size bone defect remains a challenge for orthopedic surgeons. With the advent of an aging society and their accompanying chronic diseases, it is becoming more difficult to treat bone defects, especially large segmental bone defects that are caused by trauma, tumors, infections, and congenital malformations. New materials and technologies need to be developed to address these conditions. 3D bioprinting is a novel technology that bridges the biomaterial and living cells and is an important method in tissue engineering projects. 3D bioprinting has the advantages of replacing or repairing damaged tissue and organs. The progress in material science and 3D printing devices make 3D bioprinting a technology which can be used to create various scaffolds with a large range of advanced material and cell types. However, in regard to the widespread use of bioprinting, biosafety, immunogenicity and rising costs are rising to be concerned. This article reviews the developments and applications of 3D bioprinting and highlights newly applied techniques and materials and the recent achievements in the orthopedic field. This paper also briefly reviews the difference between the methods of 3D bioprinting. The challenges are also elaborated with the aim to research materials, manufacture scaffolds, promote vascularization and maintain cell viability.

Abstract:With the ability to produce components with complex and precise structures, additive manufacturing or 3D printing techniques are now widely applied in both industry and consumer markets. The emergence of tissue engineering has facilitated the application of 3D printing in the field of biomedical implants. 3D printed implants with proper structural design can not only eliminate the stress shielding effect but also improve in vivo biocompatibility and functionality. By combining medical images derived from technologies such as X-ray scanning, CT, MRI, or ultrasonic scanning, 3D printing can be used to create patient-specific implants with almost the same anatomical structures as the injured tissues. Numerous clinical trials have already been conducted with customized implants. However, the limited availability of raw materials for printing and a lack of guidance from related regulations or laws may impede the development of 3D printing in medical implants. This review provides information on the current state of 3D printing techniques in orthopedic implant applications. The current challenges and future perspectives are also included.

Abstract:The 3D printing technology is penetrating the healthcare field at an astonishing rate. Although there is still a long way to go to realize organ printing and despite the constantly existing ethical and technical changes (1), the 3D printing can form 3D supporting structures in a controllable manner and has shown charms in fields such as tissue engineering and regenerative medicine along with the advances in cell printing and bio-printing and the innovation of printing materials (2-4). In the clinical settings, 3D printing, as a novel additive manufacturing technique, is mainly applied in orthopedics and stomatology (5). A group of 3D printingbased patient-specific osteotomy instruments, orthopedic implants, and dental implants have been licensed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Caritas Europa (CE) for clinical use. The orthopedics in China does not lag behind the Western countries in terms of patient number, operation volume, and surgical skills; however, the Western countries have much advanced orthopedic devices, in particular the implants, than China. The 3D printing technology may provide a chance for the Chinese orthopedists and technicians to independently develop innovative medical devices to catch up with their Western counterparts.

Abstract:Advancements in 3D printing technology are providing a new direction in pediatric dentistry by offering innovative solutions to traditional challenges. The remarkable expansion of 3D printing necessitates a comprehensive examination of its status and applications in the dental field, particularly in the pediatric dentistry. This review provides a comprehensive exploration of the applications of 3D printing in pediatric dental practices by drawing from a systematic search across databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Scielo and the Cochrane Library. The search strategy employed a combination of keywords: "Digital dentistry and 3D printing", "3D printing technology in dentistry", "3D printing in pediatric dentistry" and "3D printing in pediatric dental procedures". The review encompasses a wide array of studies, including original research, cross-sectional analyses, case reports and reviews. A detailed overview is presented in regard to the use of 3D printing for master and educational models, space maintainers, prosthetic restorations, surgical guide, splint design and fracture treatment, fluoride application, autogenous dental transplantation, anterior teeth restoration, and pediatric endodontics and regenerative treatments. This review shows that 3D printing improves clinical outcomes through personalized and precise treatment options and enhances dental students' educational landscape. Areas lacking extensive research were also identified, which warrent further investigation to optimize the integration of 3D printing in pediatric dentistry. By mapping out the current landscape and future directions, the aim of this paper is to support pediatric dentists in recognizing the broad implications of 3D printing for improving patient care and advancing dental education.

Abstract:The applications of 3D printing technology in health care, particularly orthopedics, continue to broaden as the technology becomes more advanced, accessible, and affordable worldwide. 3D printed models of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance image (MRI) scans can reproduce a replica of anatomical parts that enable surgeons to get a detailed understanding of the underlying anatomy that he/she experiences intraoperatively. The 3D printed anatomic models are particularly useful for preoperative planning, simulation of complex orthopedic procedures, development of patient-specific instruments, and implants that can be used intraoperatively. This paper reviews the role of 3D printing technology in orthopedic surgery, specifically focusing on the role it plays in assisting surgeons to have a better preoperative evaluation and surgical planning.

Abstract:As a promising manufacturing technology, three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is widely used in the medical field. In the treatment of osteoarticular defects, the emergence of 3D printing technology provides a new option for the reconstruction of functional articular surfaces. At present, 3D printing technology has been used in clinical applications such as models, patient-specific instruments (PSIs), and customized implants to treat joint defects caused by trauma, sports injury, and tumors. This review summarizes the application status of 3D printing technology in the treatment of osteoarticular defects and discusses its advantages, disadvantages, and possible future research strategies.

Abstract:Purpose: Three-dimensional printing has evolved into a cost-effective and accessible tool. In orthopedic surgery, creating patient-specific anatomical models and instrumentation improves visualization and surgical accuracy. In pediatric orthopedics, three-dimensional printing reduces operating time, radiation exposure, and blood loss by enhancing surgical efficacy. This review compares outcomes of three-dimensional printing–assisted surgeries with conventional surgeries for upper and lower extremity pediatric surgeries. Methods: A complete search of medical literature up to August 2023, using Ovid Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library was conducted in compliance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Broad search terms included “pediatrics,” “orthopedic,” and “3D-printing.” Eligible studies were assessed for intraoperative time, blood loss, and fluoroscopy exposure. Results: Out of 3299 initially identified articles, 14 articles met inclusion criteria. These studies included 409 pediatric patients, with ages averaging 9.51 years. The majority were retrospective studies (nine), with four prospective and one experimental study. Studies primarily utilized three-dimensional printing for navigation templates and implants. Results showed significant reductions in operative time, blood loss, and radiation exposure with three-dimensional printing. Complication occurrences were generally lower in three-dimensional printing surgeries, but there was no statistical significance. Conclusions: Three-dimensional printing is an emerging technology in the field of orthopedics, and it is primarily used for preoperative planning. For pediatric upper and lower extremity surgeries, three-dimensional printing leads to decreased operating room time, decreased intraoperative blood loss, and reduced radiation exposure. Other uses for three-dimensional printing include education, patient communication, the creation of patient-specific instrumentation and implants. Level of evidence: Level III

Abstract:Background: With increasing requirements for medical effects, and huge differences among individuals, traditional surgical instruments are difficult to meet the patients' growing medical demands. 3D printing is increasingly mature, which connects to medical services critically as well. The patient specific surgical guide plate provides the condition for precision medicine in orthopaedics. Methods: In this paper, a systematic review of the orthopedic guide template is presented, where the history of 3D-printing-guided technology, the process of guides, and basic clinical applications of orthopedic guide templates are described. Finally, the limitations of the template and possible future directions are discussed. Results: The technology of 3D printing surgical templates is increasingly mature, standard, and intelligent. With the help of guide templates, the surgeon can easily determine the direction and depth of the screw path, and choose the angle and range of osteotomy, increasing the precision, safety, and reliability of the procedure in various types of surgeries. It simplifies the difficult surgical steps and accelerates the growth of young and mid-career physicians. But some problems such as cost, materials, and equipment limit its development. Conclusions: In different fields of orthopedics, the use of guide templates can significantly improve surgical accuracy, shorten the surgical time, and reduce intraoperative bleeding and radiation. With the development of 3D printing, the guide template will be standardized and simplified from design to production and use. 3D printing guides will be further sublimated in the application of orthopedics and better serve the patients. The translational potential of this paper: Precision, intelligence, and individuation are the future development direction of orthopedics. It is more and more popular as the price of printers falls and materials are developed. In addition, the technology of meta-universe, digital twin, and artificial intelligence have made revolutionary effects on template guides. We aim to summarize recent developments and applications of 3D printing guide templates for engineers and surgeons to develop more accurate and efficient templates.
