Abstract:Advancements in nanotechnology continue to unearth material vistas that presage a new age of revolutionary functionalities replete with unparalleled physical properties and avant-garde chemical capabilities that promise sweeping paradigm shifts in energy, environment, telecommunications and potentially healthcare. At the upper echelons of this realm, the pnictogen and chalcogen class of honeycomb layered oxides have emerged with fascinating crystal chemistry and exotic electromagnetic and topological phenomena that muster multifaceted concepts spanning from materials science to condensed matter physics and potential applications in electrochemistry, quantum mechanics and electronics. In a bid to shed light on the mechanisms governing these biomimetic nanostructures, this review highlights the significant milestones and breakthroughs that have augmented their current fundamental theory, properties, and utilities. Herein, we elucidate the vast promising crystal chemistry space against the backdrop of known synthesis and characterisation techniques employed in the development and optimisation of this class of honeycomb layered oxides. Further, we highlight key theoretical models that have reinvigorated the exploration and characterisation of within this class of materials and are poised to redefine the frontiers of material research and their applications. We conclude by envisaging future research directions where fascinating physicochemical, topological and electromagnetic properties could be lurking and where valiant efforts ought to be inclined, particularly in the prospective realisation of exotic material compositional space as well as their utility as testing grounds for emergent two-dimensional (2D) topological quantum gravity and conformal field theories.

Kinetics and Structural Optimization of Cobalt-Oxide Honeycomb Structures Based on Thermochemical Heat Storage

Abstract:Thermochemical heat storage is an important solar-heat-storage technology with a high temperature and high energy density, which has attracted increasing attention and research in recent years. The mono-metallic redox pair Co3O4/CoO realizes heat storage and exothermic process through a reversible redox reaction. Its basic principle is to store energy by heat absorption through a reduction reaction during high-irradiation hours (high temperature) and then release heat through an exothermic-oxidation reaction during low-irradiation hours (low temperature). This paper presents the design of a cobalt-oxide honeycomb structure, which is extruded from pure Co3O4, a porous media with a high heat-storage density and a high conversion rate. Based on the experimental data, a three-dimensional axisymmetric multi-physics numerical model was developed to simulate the flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, and chemical reaction in the thermochemical heat-storage reactor. Unlike the previous treatment approach of equating chemical reactions with surface reactions, the model in this paper considers the consumption and generation of solids and the diffusion and transfer of oxygen in the porous medium during the reaction process, which brings the simulation results closer to the real values. Finally, the influence of the physical parameters of the honeycomb-structured body on the storage and exothermic process is explored in a wide range. The simulation results show that the physical-parameter settings and structural design of the cobalt-oxide honeycomb structure used in this paper are reasonable, and are conducive to improving its charging/discharging performance.
Honeycomb Layered Frameworks with Metallophilic Bilayers

Abstract:This Review highlights the exciting advancements in the science of honeycomb layered frameworks with metallophilic bilayers that have recently garnered attention particularly due to reports of anomalous fractional valency states of silver cations sandwiched between transition metal slabs of other cations. First, the latest tactics and techniques including but not limited to X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) particularly necessary for characterising recent honeycomb layered frameworks with metallophilic bilayers are described, with emphasis on silver-based oxides. Second, new strategies and concepts related to topochemically- or temperature-induced cationic-deficient phases expanding the compositional space of honeycomb layered frameworks focused on cationic bilayer architectures are also accentuated. Third, the latest condensed matter theoretic advances towards a full, atomistic description of the bilayered structure in such frameworks are detailed, especially related to critical phenomena at the cusp of the monolayer-bilayer phase transition. This entails, in part, describing honeycomb layered frameworks as optimised lattices within the congruent sphere packing problem, equivalent to a particular two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theory. Altogether, it is hoped that this Review will give the reader a panoramic view of the honeycomb layered frameworks with important applications within the emerging field of quantum matter, potentially redefining their frontier. Thus, the scope of this Review is expected to be worthwhile for recent graduates and emerging experts alike not only in the materials science and chemistry community but also in other diverse fields of interest.

Abstract:The quest for a successful condensed matter theory that incorporates diffusion of cations, whose trajectories are restricted to a honeycomb/hexagonal pattern prevalent in honeycomb layered materials is ongoing, with the recent progress discussed herein focusing on symmetries, topological aspects and phase transition descriptions of the theory. Such a theory is expected to differ both qualitatively and quantitatively from 2D electron theory on static carbon lattices, by virtue of the dynamical nature of diffusing cations within lattices in honeycomb layered materials. Herein, we have focused on recent theoretical progress in the characterisation of pnictogen- and chalcogen-based honeycomb layered oxides with emphasis on hexagonal/honeycomb lattices of cations. Particularly, we discuss the link between Liouville conformal field theory to expected experimental results characterising the optimal nature of the honeycomb/hexagonal lattices in congruent sphere packing problems. The diffusion and topological aspects are captured by an idealised model, which successfully incorporates the duality between the theory of cations and their vacancies. Moreover, the rather intriguing experimental result that a wide class of silver-based layered materials form stable Ag bilayers, each comprising a pair of triangular sub-lattices, suggests a bifurcation mechanism for the Ag triangular sub-lattices, which ultimately requires conformal symmetry breaking within the context of the idealised model, resulting in a cation monolayer-bilayer phase transition. Other relevant experimental, theoretical and computational techniques applicable to the characterisation of honeycomb layered materials have been availed for completeness.

Abstract:Honeycomb layered oxides have garnered tremendous research interest in a wide swath of disciplines owing not only to the myriad physicochemical properties they exhibit, but also their rich crystal structural versatility. Herein, a comprehensive crystallographic study of a sodium-based $\rm Na_2Ni_2TeO_6$ honeycomb layered oxide has been performed using atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy, elucidating a plethora of atomic arrangement (stacking) disorders in the pristine material. Stacking disorders in the arrangement of honeycomb metal slab layers (stacking faults) occur predominantly perpendicular to the slabs with long-range coherence length and enlisting edge dislocations in some domains. Moreover, the periodic arrangement of the distribution of alkali atoms is altered by the occurrence of stacking faults. The multitude of disorders innate in $\rm Na_2Ni_2TeO_6$ envisage broad implications in the functionalities of related honeycomb layered oxide materials and hold promise in bolstering renewed interest in their material science.

Abstract:Endowed with a multitude of exquisite properties such as rich electrochemistry, superb topology and eccentric electromagnetic phenomena, honeycomb layered oxides have risen to the top echelons of science with applications in diverse fields ranging from condensed matter physics, solid-state chemistry, materials science, solid-state ionics to electrochemistry. However, these oxides are vastly underutilised as their underlying atomistic mechanisms remain unexplored. Therefore, in this study, atomic-resolution imaging on pristine $\rm K_2Ni_2TeO_6$ along multiple zone axes was conducted using spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-corrected STEM) to reveal hitherto unreported nanoscale topological defects and curvature which can be associated with various phase transitions. Furthermore, we discover the coexistence of a stacking variant with P3-type sequence alongside the well-reported P2-type stacking sequence in such honeycomb layered oxides. Our findings have the potential to inspire further experimental and theoretical studies into the role of stacking and topology in the functionality of honeycomb layered oxides, for instance, as high-performance electrode materials for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Honeycomb layered oxides with monovalent or divalent, monolayered cationic lattices generally exhibit myriad crystalline features encompassing rich electrochemistry, geometries and disorders, which particularly places them as attractive material candidates for next-generation energy storage applications. Herein, we report global honeycomb layered oxide compositions, ${\rm Ag_2}M_2{\rm TeO_6}$ ($M = \rm Ni, Mg, \textit{etc}.$) exhibiting $\rm Ag$ atom bilayers with sub-valent states within Ag-rich crystalline domains of ${\rm Ag_6}M_2{\rm TeO_6}$ and $\rm Ag$-deficient domains of ${\rm Ag}_{2 - x}\rm Ni_2TeO_6$ ($0 < x < 2$). The $\rm Ag$-rich material characterised by aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy reveals local atomic structural disorders characterised by aperiodic stacking and incoherency in the bilayer arrangement of $\rm Ag$ atoms. Meanwhile, the global material not only displays high ionic conductivity, but also manifests oxygen-hole electrochemistry during silver-ion extraction. Within the $\rm Ag$-rich domains, the bilayered structure, argentophilic interactions therein and the expected $\rm Ag$ sub-valent states ($1/2+, 2/3+, \textit{etc}.$) are theoretically understood via spontaneous symmetry breaking of SU($2$)$\times$U($1$) gauge symmetry interactions amongst $3$ degenerate mass-less chiral fermion states, justified by electron occupancy of silver $4d_{z^2}$ and $5s$ orbitals on a bifurcated honeycomb lattice. This implies that bilayered frameworks have research applications that go beyond the confines of energy storage.

Abstract:Metal oxide redox system characterized open-loop operation, high energy density, and high reversibility , which is one of the most promising thermochemical energy storage technologies for the next-generation concentrated solar power plants. Most of the previous studies focused on the material properties, while the energy storage performance of oxide monolithic bodies, such as energy storage density and heat storage/release rate, has rarely been reported. In this paper, a novel and effective method for the improvement of the energy storage performance of oxide honeycombs with multi-scale composite pores is proposed and presented. Methyl cellulose and four common biomass materials, including bagasse, loofah, juniper leaf, and pine needle, were used as pore-forming agents for oxide honeycombs. The pyrolysis of methyl cellulose forms small-scale pores in the honeycomb bodies and contributes the major pore volume. The biomass templates further optimize the pore characteristics, all biomass-templated Co 3 O 4 -based honeycomb bodies have higher total pore volume and permeability than that of biomass-free honeycomb body. The honeycomb with 2.5 wt% pine needle achieves the highest energy storage density, with an average of 694.62 kJ/kg during the second to fifteenth cycles. In addition, the honeycomb containing 7.5 wt% pine needle has the highest energy store/release rate. Biomass-templated Co 3 O 4 -based honeycomb shows a high crushing strength, and there are no obvious cracks and structural deformations on its surface after 15 thermal cycles. The findings demonstrate that the methyl cellulose and biomass template method can effectively optimize the pore structure and energy storage properties of the oxide honeycombs, thereby expanding the application prospects of Co 3 O 4 -based honeycombs in thermochemical energy storage.

Abstract:Honeycomb layered oxides are a novel class of nanostructured materials comprising alkali or alkaline earth metals intercalated into transition metal slabs. The intricate honeycomb architecture and layered framework endows this family of oxides with a tessellation of features such as exquisite electrochemistry, unique topology and fascinating electromagnetic phenomena. Despite having innumerable functionalities, these materials remain highly underutilized as their underlying atomistic mechanisms are vastly unexplored. Therefore, in a bid to provide a more in-depth perspective, we propose an idealised diffusion model of the charged alkali cations (such as lithium, sodium or potassium) in the two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb layers within the three-dimensional (3D) crystal of honeycomb layered oxide frameworks. This model not only explains the correlation between the excitation of cationic vacancies (by applied electromagnetic fields) and the Gaussian curvature deformation of the 2D surface, but also takes into consideration, the quantum properties of the cations and their inter-layer mixing through quantum tunnelling. Through this work, we offer a novel theoretical framework for the study of 3D layered materials with 2D cationic diffusion currents, as well as providing pedagogical insights into the role of topological phase transitions in these materials in relation to Brownian motion and quantum geometry.
Self-ordering dual-layered honeycomb nanotubular titania: Enhanced structural stability and energy storage capacity

Abstract:Electrochemical energy storage of TiO2 anodic oxide with a novel honeycomb morphology was characterized and compared with that of standard TiO2 nanotubes. The new morphology consists of several smaller-diameter (∼20nm) nanotubes stacked inside of each honeycomb like hemisphere. The honeycomb like hemispheres are 160–200nm in diameter with inter-wall thicknesses of 20–50nm grown onto a planar barrier layer. The dual-layered honeycomb oxide has a total thickness of about 350–500nm and high surface area. Cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge tests were carried out on these oxide samples in as-anodized and thermally annealed conditions using 0.1M NaOH and 0.1M LiCl+0.1M HCl electrolytes. The honeycomb arrays showed an areal capacitance of 56mFcm−2 at 100mVs−1 scan rate, and 0.75mFcm−2 at a current density of 0.1mAcm−2. The areal capacitance of the honeycomb structured samples were about 60% higher than that of the regular TiO2 nanotubes. The honeycomb structured TiO2 also showed 33% higher capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles than that of regular TiO2 nanotubes. The higher capacitance retention could be attributed to the enhanced structural stability of the honeycomb structures.

Abstract:Owing to unique structures and properties, 2D layered materials have exhibited great potentials for energy-related applications. Among these, 2D Bi-based layered materials which possess intriguing characteristics for energy conversion and storage systems have attracted tremendous attention. In this review, the structural and electronic properties of 2D Bi-based layered materials classified into four categories (unitary, binary, ternary and multinary) are introduced. Their promising applications in energy conversion and storage are reviewed in details, with particular emphasis on photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, solar cells, thermoelectrics, optoelectronics and rechargeable batteries. Finally, based on current research progress, future perspectives for exploring and developing advanced 2D Bi-based layered energy conversion and storage materials are presented.

Abstract:The categories of different sites and elementary compositions of honeycomb‐layered‐oxides are discussed. Recent progress on honeycomb‐layered‐oxides as well as Na3Ni2SbO6 and Na3Ni2BiO6 as two representative materials is introduced, and the crystal and electronic structure, electrochemical performance, and modification strategies are summarized. This review would inspire more interest in high output voltage, long lifespan sodium‐ion batteries. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are becoming promising candidates for energy storage devices due to the low cost, abundant reserves, and excellent electrochemical performance. As the most important unit, layered cathodes attract much attention, where honeycomb‐layered‐oxides (HLOs) manifest outstanding structural stability, high redox potential, and long‐life electrochemistry. Here, recent progress on HLOs as well as Na3Ni2SbO6 and Na3Ni2BiO6 as two representative materials are introduced, and the crystal and electronic structure, electrochemical performance, and modification strategies are summarized. The advanced high nickel HLOs are highlighted toward development of state‐of‐the‐art sodium‐ion batteries. This review would deepen the understanding of superstructure in layered oxides, as well as structure–property relationship, and inspire more interest in high output voltage, long lifespan sodium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Graphene and other two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have attracted intensive interest for use in energy storage and conversion systems because of their unique structure and remarkable properties. Although significant progress has been made in this field, certain intrinsic limitations obstruct the achievement of desired properties. 2D heterostructures, upon stacking or stitching different 2DMs in well-defined sequences or patterns, could significantly entail drastic changes in their properties, and thereby synergistically combine the merits of individual 2DMs while eliminating their related drawbacks. Herein, we provide a topical review of recent advances in the preparation and characterization of 2D heterostructures for energy-related applications. Firstly, an introduction is given to the definition and importance of 2D heterostructures, followed by their typical categories of vertically stacked heterostructures and horizontal in-plane heterostructures reported so far. Secondly, the state-of-the-art synthesis approaches to fabricate 2D heterostructures, including mechanically aligned transfer, chemical vapor deposition, liquid exfoliation and self-assembly, and layer by layer self-assembly, are introduced in detail. Then, the current status of advanced characterization techniques like scanning probe-, electron-diffraction-, X-ray-, and spectroscopy-based techniques that are critical for the accurate identification of 2D heterostructures and understanding of the performance-enhancing mechanisms of devices is systemically summarized. Furthermore, recent applications of 2D heterostructures in energy storage (e.g., lithium/sodium ion batteries, lithium sulfur batteries, supercapacitors, and micro-supercapacitors) and conversion (e.g., hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions and photocatalysis) are exemplified to highlight their positive synergistic effect. Finally, future challenges and prospective solutions that may direct the growth of 2D heterostructures and their energy-related applications are proposed.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), as a new generation of intrinsically porous extended crystalline materials formed by coordination bonding between the organic ligands and metal ions or clusters, have attracted considerable interest in many applications owing to their high porosity, diverse structures, and controllable chemical structure. Recently, 2D transition-metal- (TM-) based MOFs have become a hot topic in this field because of their high aspect ratio derived from their large lateral size and small thickness, as well as the advantages of MOFs. Moreover, 2D TM-based MOFs can act as good precursors to construct heterostructures with high electrical conductivity and abundant active sites for a range of applications. This review comprehensively introduces the widely adopted synthesis strategies of 2D TM-based MOFs and their composites/derivatives. In addition, this paper summarizes and highlights the recent advances in energy conversion and storage, including the hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, urea oxidation reaction, batteries, and supercapacitors. Finally, the challenges in developing these intriguing 2D layered materials and their composites/derivatives are examined, and the possible proposals for future directions to enhance the energy conversion and storage performance are reviewed.

Abstract:The layered alpha-NaFeO2 structure is one of the most important structural families for battery cathodes. In recent years, it has been found that a honeycomb-layered superstructure of the basic alpha-NaFeO2 structure type can produce enhanced specific capacities for Li-ion batteries (Li-excess compounds with Li2MnO3 motifs) and enhanced voltages for Na-ion batteries (compounds such as Na3Ni2SbO6 for which the entire discharge capacity is delivered above 3.0 V vs. Na+/Na). However, the crystallography of honeycomb-layered compounds is very complex, which results in the occurrence of both disordered and ordered polymorphs as well as complex long-range c-axis superstructures whose origin has not previously been determined. New tools for investigating, classifying, and quantifying the disordered in honeycomb-layered compounds have been developed and applied to Na-ion cathode materials with this structure type with an emphasis on the “number” faults associated with the position of the central atom of the honeycomb lattice rather than the “letter” faults associated with the layer position relative to the close-packed atom planes. This comprehensive work includes Rietveld refinements of synchrotron and neutron diffraction data, pair distribution function analysis, solid state NMR, TEM studies, and complementary electrochemical performance data. It is demonstrated that there is a continuous spectrum of compositions with varying amounts of number disorder. This number disorder is distinctly non-random, and the underlying thermodynamic reasons will be discussed, as well as the unusually slow reaction mechanism by which disorder is annealed out of the structure. Since the structure of honeycomb-layered compounds are strongly dependent on the synthesis history, the methods for quantifying the degree of disorder that will be presented are particularly important if systematic studies on this important class of materials are to be carried out. It is found that the degree of ordering has a clear impact on electrochemical performance, and thus control over sample disorder is required in order to attain the best cathode electrochemistry.

Abstract:The review discusses recent advances in hierarchical porous structure MOFs and their derived materials. It covers design, synthesis, and applications in optics, sensors, catalysis, and energy storage. The importance of 3DOM structures in enhancing mass and charge transfer in electrochemical reactions is highlighted. The review concludes with suggested challenges and prospects for 3DOM porous structure materials. Hierarchical porous materials have attracted the attention of researchers due to their enormous specific surface area, maximized active site utilization efficiency, and unique structure and properties. In this context, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a unique mix of properties that make them particularly appealing as tunable porous substrates containing highly active sites. This review focuses on recent advances in the types and synthetic strategies of hierarchical porous MOFs and their derived materials. Furthermore, it highlights the relationship between the mass diffusion and transport of hierarchical porous structures and the pore size with examples and simulations, while identifying their potential and limitations. On this basis, how the synthesis conditions affect the structure and electrochemical properties of MOFs based hierarchical porous materials with different structures is discussed, highlighting the prospects and challenges for the synthetization, as well as further scientific research and practical applications. Finally, some insights into current research and future design ideas for advanced MOFs based hierarchical porous materials are presented.

Abstract:Transition metal carbides and/or nitrides (MXenes), a burgeoning group of 2 D layer-structure compounds, have multiple merits, such as high electrical conductivity, tunable layer structure, small band gap, and functionalized redox-active surface, and are receiving significant attention as one of the most promising class of energy storage materials. The synthesis methods, structural configuration, and surface chemistry of MXenes directly influence their performance. This Minireview focuses on interfacial structure design and functionalization of MXenes and MXene-based energy storage materials and the effect of structural configuration and surface chemistry on their electrochemical performance. Additionally, the structure-property relationships between interfacial structure, functional group, interlayer spacing, and the corresponding energy storage performance are summarized in detail. Finally, light is shed on the perspectives for the future research on advanced MXene-based energy storage materials including scientific and technical challenges.

Abstract:The development of 2-dimensional materials has expanded beyond the realm of graphene, and now includes inorganic 2-dimensional transition metal oxides/hydroxides, which show promise for a wide range of applications. As an emerging class of nanoscale materials, they show unprecedented properties that are unattainable in their bulk lamellar systems, which can be attributed to their confined thickness compared to several tens of micrometer lateral dimensions. Such qualities make them viable candidates for battery and supercapacitor applications. There are a few challenges ahead for 2-dimensional transition metal oxides/hydroxides, including the limited types of 2-dimensional parent materials in bulk form, the controlled synthesis of 2-dimensional nanostructures with nonlayered structures, and the ability to control the properties of layers by tuning the chemistry and nanoscopic features. This Focus Review will cover the research landscape of 2-dimensional transition metal oxides/hydroxides, ranging from synthetic approaches, to understanding the properties that emerge at the single-layer scale, to exploiting these properties in both new and existing technologies.
