Abstract:The assessment of muscle activity and contraction is significant in biomechanical research and clinical applications. Such information is commonly measured and characterized by electromyography, ultrasound imaging, and laser Doppler. In this paper, we propose a new method of Video Myography (VMG) that can be used to obtain muscle contraction information. The proposed VMG produces two results to measure muscle contraction: the Video Myogram (VMM) is used to obtain the strength of muscle contraction, and the Muscle Activity Vector-Field (MAV-F) is used to describe the two-dimensional displacement field of muscle contraction. Conventional muscle contraction measurement methods obtain a one-dimensional vibration signal of the muscle, where the contraction of muscle fibers induces a two-dimensional or even three-dimensional displacement field in the tissue, which cannot be properly quantified by these methods because they only provide a single scalar quantity. However, the Muscle Activity Vector (MAV) in the MAV-F quantifies the intensity and direction of the muscle contraction. To verify the validity of VMG, we compared the muscle activation and the signal amplitude of the VMM signal and the standard surface Electromyography (sEMG) measured by the skin electrodes. sEMG and VMM signals are simultaneously acquired and processed. The experimental results on nine participants show the validity of the VMG method.
Consensus for experimental design in electromyography (CEDE) project: Application of EMG to estimate muscle force

Abstract:Skeletal muscles power movement. Deriving the forces produced by individual muscles has applications across various fields including biomechanics, robotics, and rehabilitation. Since direct in vivo measurement of muscle force in humans is invasive and challenging, its estimation through non-invasive methods such as electromyography (EMG) holds considerable appeal. This matrix, developed by the Consensus for Experimental Design in Electromyography (CEDE) project, summarizes recommendations on the use of EMG to estimate muscle force. The matrix encompasses the use of bipolar surface EMG, high density surface EMG, and intra-muscular EMG (1) to identify the onset of muscle force during isometric contractions, (2) to identify the offset of muscle force during isometric contractions, (3) to identify force fluctuations during isometric contractions, (4) to estimate force during dynamic contractions, and (5) in combination with musculoskeletal models to estimate force during dynamic contractions. For each application, recommendations on the appropriateness of using EMG to estimate force and justification for each recommendation are provided. The achieved consensus makes clear that there are limited scenarios in which EMG can be used to accurately estimate muscle forces. In most cases, it remains important to consider the activation as well as the muscle state and other biomechanical and physiological factors- such as in the context of a formal mechanical model. This matrix is intended to encourage interdisciplinary discussions regarding the integration of EMG with other experimental techniques and to promote advances in the application of EMG towards developing muscle models and musculoskeletal simulations that can accurately predict muscle forces in healthy and clinical populations.

Abstract:Electromyography is often used to infer the pattern of production of force by skeletal muscles. The interpretation of muscle function from the electromyogram (EMG) is challenged by the fact that factors such as type of muscle fiber, muscle length, and muscle velocity can all influence the relationship between electrical and mechanical activity of a muscle. Simultaneous measurements of EMG, muscle force, and fascicle length in hindlimb muscles of wild turkeys allow us to probe the quantitative link between force and EMG. We examined two features of the force-EMG relationship. First, we measured the relaxation electromechanical delay (r-EMD) as the time from the end of the EMG signal to time of the end of force. This delay varied with locomotor speed in the lateral gastrocnemius (LG); it was longer at slow walking speeds than for running. This variation in r-EMD was not explained by differences in muscle length trajectory, as the magnitude of r-EMD was not correlated with the velocity of shortening of the muscle during relaxation. We speculate that the longer relaxation times at slow walking speeds compared with running may reflect the longer time course of relaxation in slower muscles fibers. We also examined the relationship between magnitude of force and EMG across a range of walking and running speeds. We analyzed the force-EMG relationship during the swing phase separately from the force-EMG relationship during stance phase. During stance, force amplitude (average force) was linearly related to mean EMG amplitude (average EMG). Forces during swing phase were lower than predicted from the stance phase force-EMG relationship. The different force-EMG relationships during the stance and swing phases may reflect the contribution of passive structures to the development of force, or a nonlinear force-EMG relationship at low levels of muscle activity. Together the results suggest that any inference of force from EMG must be done cautiously when a broad range of activities is considered.

Abstract:Objective This paper studied the linear and nonlinear sEMG signal changes of biceps brachii in different load level during non-fatigue contraction state.Method 19 subjects participated in the experiment.sEMG signals were recorded at different force level to analyze its changes of linear indices AEMG,MPF,MF and non-linear indices C(N),DET%.Result All the linear indices increased and nonlinear index DET% decreased monotonously while C(N) kept stable during muscle contraction from 10%MVC to 80%MVC level.Conclusion The change of sEMG parameters during different levels in non-fatigue contraction may be related to the type II fibres recruitment.
Electromyography Mean Power Frequency Alternations During Rapid Transition of Elbow Flexion to Extension

Abstract:Objective:The purpose of this study was to explore the independent role of central motor control in the alternations of sEMG mean power frequency during elbow flexion to extension transition.Method:10 healthy male subjects took part in the experiment,which consisted of two phase isometric fatigue loading exercise.In the first exercise,the subject performed elbow flexion as soon as possible under the load intensity 60%MVC,then subject performed elbow isometric extension as soon as possible.Both sEMG activities of biceps brachii and triceps brachii were recorded and then mean power frequency and other parameters were calculated.Result:(1)During the rapid transition phase,mean power frequency and other sEMG parameters changed significantly.(2)During two phase elbow isometric contractions,both agonist and antagonist muscle showed similar activity patterns of MPF,C(n)and %DET,but AEMG remained relatively constant.Conclusion:The experimental results suggested brain central motor control system displayed an independent role in the alternations of MPF of biceps brachii during fatigue exercise,the possible mechanisms was that both agonist and antagonist were totally controlled by the central motor control system.
Semg Responses to the Different Intensities of Muscles Voluntary Contractions in Post-Stroke Hemiparetic Subjects

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the relationship between surface electromyography (sEMG) signal activities and neuromuscular motor control in post-stroke hemiparetic subjects. Method:Both sEMG signal activities and muscles maximal voluntary contraction of paretic and non-paretic upper and lower limb muscles of 24 stroke patients were compared. All the subjects performed a maximal voluntary,isometric and dynamic muscles contractions in elbow and knee flexion/extension movement. Myoelectric signals were collected by surface electrode and then processed by linear and non-linear methods. Result: AEMG of agonist in non-paretic side were higher than paretic side during maximal isometric voluntary contraction. Both upper and lower limb agonist muscles AEMG and DET% were higher in paretic side than in non-paretic side during 20%MVC isometric contractions. Both upper and lower limb agonist muscles AEMG were higher in paretic side than in non-paretic side during 20%MVC dynamic contractions. Conclusion:The paretic muscles of post-stroke patients had a specific muscle motor unit recuritment patterns during maximal voluntary and light intensity muscles contractions.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Surface-detected electromyographic (S-EMG) signals are used in exercise science to assess the extent of muscle activation, muscle fatigue, and neural activity during muscle contraction. However, the relationship has not been studied between S-EMG signal amplitude and motor unit activation at different muscle force levels.METHODS: S-EMG signals were measured from 76 healthy subjects during target force levels of 5, 10, 20, 30, and 50% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the knee extensors over 20-30 s. Mean absolute S-EMG amplitude, surface-detected motor unit action potential amplitude (S-MUAP), motor unit mean firing rate (mFR), and motor unit mean voltage, which is the product of S-MUAP amplitude and mFR, were assessed in the vastus medialis by using EMG signal-decomposition and spike-triggered averaging techniques.RESULTS: Motor unit mean voltage increased to the same degree as mean absolute S-EMG amplitude with increasing force, implying that motor unit size and firing rate explain the increase in mean absolute S-EMG amplitude with increasing force generation. In addition, mean absolute S-EMG amplitude increased linearly during the course of each 20-30 s contraction, with the slope being greater at higher force levels. A small change was observed in the shape of needle-detected motor unit action potentials during the contraction, but this change was not sufficient to explain the large change in mean absolute S-EMG amplitude during the contraction.CONCLUSION: Mean absolute S-EMG amplitude at different force levels and its changes during the course of a submaximal contraction are dependent on the number of motor units active, their size, and firing rates.

Mechanomyographic Analysis for Muscle Activity Assessment during a Load-Lifting Task

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to compare electromyographic (EMG) with mechanomyographic (MMG) recordings during isometric conditions, and during a simulated load-lifting task. Twenty-two males (age: 25.5 ± 5.3 years) first performed maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and submaximal isometric contractions of upper limb muscles at 25%, 50% and 75% MVC. Participants then executed repetitions of a functional activity simulating a load-lifting task above shoulder level, at 25%, 50% and 75% of their maximum activity (based on MVC). The low-frequency part of the accelerometer signal (<5 Hz) was used to segment the six phases of the motion. EMG and MMG were both recorded during the entire experimental procedure. Root mean square (RMS) and mean power frequency (MPF) were selected as signal extraction features. During isometric contractions, EMG and MMG exhibited similar repeatability scores. They also shared similar RMS vs. force relationship, with RMS increasing to 75% MVC and plateauing to 100%. MPF decreased with increasing force to 75% MVC. In dynamic condition, RMSMMG exhibited higher sensitivity to changes in load than RMSEMG. These results confirm the feasibility of MMG measurements to be used during functional activities outside the laboratory. It opens new perspectives for future applications in sports science, ergonomics and human–machine interface conception.

Abstract:Introduction: The electromechanical efficiency of skeletal muscle represents the dissociation between electrical and mechanical events within a muscle. It has been widely studied, with varying methods for its measurement and calculation. For this reason, the purpose of this literature review was to integrate the available research to date and provide more insights about this measure. Methods: A systematic search of the literature was performed across three online databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SPORTDiscus. This yielded 1284 reports, of which 10 met the inclusion criteria. Included studies have used different methods to measure the electromechanical efficiency (EME) index, including electromyography (EMG), mechanomyography and tensiomyography (TMG). Results: The EME index was used to assess muscle conditions such as muscle atrophy, pain syndromes, or to monitor rehabilitation in patients with knee problems, fatigue and the effects of exercise and rehabilitation. TMG has been shown to be one of the most reliable methods to obtain the EME index, but its use precludes obtaining the index during voluntary muscle contractions. Conclusion: Standardizing the EME index is crucial for its diverse applications in clinical, sport, and rehabilitation contexts. Future research should prioritize standardization of measurement protocols for establishing the most repeatable, and reliable approach that can be used for inter-individual comparisons or for assessing an individual for multiple times over a longer period. Abstract:Physiological muscle disorders resulting from various diseases, such as sarcopenia or strokes, affect millions of people each year according to the American Heart Association. Medical examinations for assessing muscle health are difficult to administer and lack standardization. Surface electromyography (sEMG) signals have found a wide variety of applications; in this work, we present a simple reliable framework for hand grip force estimation using them. We hope that this work will lay the groundwork for applying hand grip force estimation as a method for standardized and reliable muscle health assessment. Seven healthy male subjects were voluntarily recruited and sEMG signals were collected from eight electrodes uniformly distributed around the forearm. A logarithmic function can describe the EMG–force relationship. We propose a novel method for generating functional potential-based inverse EMG images of the forearm. The hand grip force can be estimated from the reconstructed images. Using a simple lightweight system and simple algorithmic techniques we can attain a mean correlation coefficient of 0.95 ± 0.01 and mean RMSE of 0.18 ± 0.08 N . The results are presented for subject-dependent tests, the generalizability of the method is still to be researched over a larger cohort of subjects, including rehabilitation patients.

Computation and Evaluation of Features of Surface Electromyogram to Identify the Force of Muscle Contraction and Muscle Fatigue

Abstract:The relationship between force of muscle contraction and muscle fatigue with six different features of surface electromyogram (sEMG) was determined by conducting experiments on thirty-five volunteers. The participants performed isometric contractions at 50%, 75%, and 100% of their maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Six features were considered in this study: normalised spectral index (NSM5), median frequency, root mean square, waveform length, normalised root mean square (NRMS), and increase in synchronization (IIS) index . Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear regression analysis were performed to determine the significance of the feature with respect to the three factors: muscle force, muscle fatigue, and subject. The results show that IIS index of sEMG had the highest correlation with muscle fatigue and the relationship was statistically significant ( P < 0.01 ), while NSM5 associated best with level of muscle contraction (%MVC) ( P < 0.01 ). Both of these features were not affected by the intersubject variations ( P > 0.05 ).

Abstract:This lecture explores the various uses of surface electromyography in the field of biomechanics. Three groups of applications are considered: those involving the activation timing of muscles, the force/EMG signal relationship, and the use of the EMG signal as a fatigue index. Technical considerations for recording the EMG signal with maximal fidelity are reviewed, and a compendium of all known factors that affect the information contained in the EMG signal is presented. Questions are posed to guide the practitioner in the proper use of surface electromyography. Sixteen recommendations are made regarding the proper detection, analysis, and interpretation of the EMG signal and measured force. Sixteen outstanding problems that present the greatest challenges to the advancement of surface electromyography are put forward for consideration. Finally, a plea is made for arriving at an international agreement on procedures commonly used in electromyography and biomechanics.

Effect of Forearm Postures and Elbow Joint Angles on Elbow Flexion Torque and Mechanomyography in Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation of the Biceps Brachii

Abstract:Neuromuscular electrical stimulation plays a pivotal role in rehabilitating muscle function among individuals with neurological impairment. However, there remains uncertainty regarding whether the muscle's response to electrical excitation is affected by forearm posture, joint angle, or a combination of both factors. This study aimed to investigate the effects of forearm postures and elbow joint angles on the muscle torque and MMG signals. Measurements of the torque around the elbow and MMG of the biceps brachii (BB) muscle were conducted in 36 healthy subjects (age, 22.24 ± 2.94 years; height, 172 ± 0.5 cm; and weight, 67.01 ± 7.22 kg) using an in-house elbow flexion testbed and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) of the BB muscle. The BB muscle was stimulated while the forearm was positioned in the neutral, pronation, or supination positions. The elbow was flexed at angles of 10°, 30°, 60°, and 90°. The study analyzed the impact of the forearm posture(s) and elbow joint angle(s) on the root-mean-square value of the torque (TQRMS). Subsequently, various MMG parameters, such as the root-mean-square value (MMGRMS), the mean power frequency (MMGMPF), and the median frequency (MMGMDF), were analyzed along the longitudinal, lateral, and transverse axes of the BB muscle fibers. The test–retest interclass correlation coefficient (ICC21) for the torque and MMG ranged from 0.522 to 0.828. Repeated-measure ANOVAs showed that the forearm posture and elbow flexion angle significantly influenced the TQRMS (p < 0.05). Similarly, the MMGRMS, MMGMPF, and MMGMDF showed significant differences among all the postures and angles (p 0.05). The study also found that the MMGRMS and TQRMS increased with increases in the joint angle from 10° to 60° and decreased at greater angles. However, during this investigation, the MMGMPF and MMGMDF exhibited a consistent decrease in response to increases in the joint angle for the lateral and transverse axes of the BB muscle. These findings suggest that the muscle contraction evoked by NMES may be influenced by the interplay between actin and myosin filaments, which are responsible for muscle contraction and are, in turn, influenced by the muscle length. Because restoring the function of limbs is a common goal in rehabilitation services, the use of MMG in the development of methods that may enable the real-time tracking of exact muscle dimensional changes and activation levels is imperative.

Abstract:This review is a comprehensive guide for electromyography (EMG) researchers, providing a comparison of skin EMG recording (surface EMG: sEMG and high-density sEMG: HD-sEMG) and intramuscular EMG recording (multi-motor unit-MMU and single motor unit electromyography-SMU). We delve into the nuances of techniques, highlighting their strengths and limitations in quantifying muscle activation during dynamic and static conditions. We first examine how EMG signals change with time, focussing on the interplay between motor unit synchronisation and signal amplitude. The review then explores the impact of electrode placement on signal quality. We further discuss the challenges of signal cancellation, crosstalk from neighbouring muscles, and motion artifacts, which can significantly affect signal integrity. Finally, we address the temporal changes in electrode impedance and its implications for data interpretation. Our analysis proposes that specific research objectives should guide the choice amongst sEMG, HD-sEMG, SMU and MMU. MMU, which records the peak counts of individual motor unit action potentials from a localised muscle area, is particularly suited for studying deep or small muscles during static and dynamic activities. Its high sensitivity to motor unit recruitment and discharge rates minimises the impact of factors such as signal cancellation and motion artefacts. Conversely, sEMG is well-suited for short-duration, isometric assessments of large, superficial muscles. HD-sEMG helps study single motor unit properties under isometric conditions. SMU is particularly suited for studying neuronal networks between stimulated sites and motor neurons. This review aims to provide researchers with the information to select the most appropriate EMG technique for their investigations.

Abstract:Objective Compared to the research on the single central or peripheral nervous system, there is still a lack of systematic information on the relationship between the two. It is necessary to clarify whether there is information interaction between the central nervous system and the peripheral motor system via brain-muscle coupling. Approach In this study, we constructed the coherence networks within and between the brain and muscles at different levels of thumb force. We then developed a model that can accurately identify different levels of thumb force based on their distinct network features. Main results In the internal coherence network of EEG or EMG, high-level force activity evokes stronger and more concentrated network patterns than low-level force activity. In the corticomuscular coherence network (CMCN) between EEG and EMG, there is a stronger coupling relationship between non-contralateral motor brain regions and most muscle groups for high-level force compared to low-level force. The CMCN features led to significant improvements in identifying different thumb forces, resulting in an accuracy rate of 99.00 %, which is at least 4.00 % higher than using EEG or EMG alone. Significance This study indicates that there is information interaction between the central nervous system and the peripheral motor system during movement, which can have important implications for improving rehabilitation and motor control methods.

Abstract:Electromyography (EMG) is a technique that registers the electrical activity from the muscle; one application for this kind of signal is muscle fatigue analysis, which can be defined as the clue of losing muscle strength during physical activities. These activities can involve isometric or dynamic contractions, whereas, for the last one, there is no consensus about the more precise technique for muscle fatigue analysis. This work aims to compare three different analysis techniques to study muscle fatigue using EMG signals recorded during a pedaling exercise named Wingate test (dynamic contractions): median frequency (MDF), correlation coefficient (CC), and mutual information (MI). The techniques were applied in the frequency domain and, for CC and MI, were observed the similarity between the end and beginning of the signal using two kinds of references: fixed and variable. If the difference between these parts is identified using the references, it successfully identifies muscle fatigue. Comparing the results, CC and MI got better results than MDF, which reached 70.2% of the expected result, which we consider as indicative of fatigue. The results with CC and MI were more satisfactory: for fixed reference, CC got 77.2% of indicative of fatigue and 94.7% with MI. Variable reference got the best results: CC got approximately 98.2% and MI 96.5%, respectively.

Abstract:The relationship of EMGFT with VAT and muscle fatigue index on 12 subjects was studied.Results showed that the investigation rate was quite low,and there was no significant correlation either between EMGFT and VAT or muscle fatigue index.In addition,there was no significant difference in EMGFT among VM,RF and VL.This study aims to explain the phenomenon of low investigation rate while using EMGFT and place foundation for improving the measurement method of EMGFT.
Towards a Simplified Estimation of Muscle Activation Pattern from MRI and EMG Using Electrical Network and Graph Theory

Abstract:Muscle functional MRI (mfMRI) is an imaging technique that assess muscles’ activity, exploiting a shift in the T2-relaxation time between resting and active state on muscles. It is accompanied by the use of electromyography (EMG) to have a better understanding of the muscle electrophysiology; however, a technique merging MRI and EMG information has not been defined yet. In this paper, we present an anatomical and quantitative evaluation of a method our group recently introduced to quantify its validity in terms of muscle pattern estimation for four subjects during four isometric tasks. Muscle activation pattern are estimated using a resistive network to model the morphology in the MRI. An inverse problem is solved from sEMG data to assess muscle activation. The results have been validated with a comparison with physiological information and with the fitting on the electrodes space. On average, over 90% of the input sEMG information was able to be explained with the estimated muscle patterns. There is a match with anatomical information, even if a strong subjectivity is observed among subjects. With this paper we want to proof the method’s validity showing its potential in diagnostic and rehabilitation fields.

High density EMG signal decomposition for force prediction: perspective for man-machine interfacing.

Abstract:The surface electromyogram (EMG) is used to infer the neural drive sent by the central nervous system to the muscles by associating its amplitude to the strength of the neural activation. In addition, the surface EMG is adopted in the design of technologies for motor rehabilitation with the aim to restore the lost limb functionality of amputees. In this perspective, it is possible to translate this biologic signal into commands for controlling intuitively the prosthetic device. Since the surface EMG amplitude constitutes a poor indicator of the neural information, more advanced methods were developed such as the high-density surface EMG signal decomposition. With this work, I focused my efforts on understanding how the central nervous system (CNS) controls the muscle force, by exploiting the discharge timings of the motor units. This might help to lay the foundations for an innovative human-machine interface directly based on the spinal cord circuitry information. In this context, the aim of this thesis is to compare the use of the traditional surface EMG signal versus the offline high-density surface electromyography (HDsEMG) signal decomposition. For this study, I used a Graphical User Interface (GUI )which implement Convolutive Kernel Convolution (CKC). This graphical tool allows the operator to decompose the EMG signal and to perform a manual correction of the possible algorithm errors. Thanks to the decomposition approach, the neural activation sent by the spinal cord to the muscles was explored. The entire analysis is focus on the activity of the tibialis anterior muscle (TA) which was recorded by using a grid of 64 electrodes (HDsEMG). In each experiment, the participants performed 25 isometric ankle dorsiflexion at three different levels of speed (i.e.%MVC/s). In particular, the study consists of two main part: 1. the investigation of the motor units recruitment and the discharge rates modulations to understand how the CNS responds to the different conditions, such as the changing in the contraction speed; 2. the design of two different linear regressor, based on the neural drive and the EMG envelope respectivelly, to estimate the force of the contraction. In particular three single linear regressor (SLR) and the global linear regressor (GLR) were used. Both the regressions were done considering a time domain feature extracted from the recording force, i.e. the contractile impulse (IC). This was calculated as the integral of the force along time. Thus for both the EMG envelope and the neural drive, the regressions were evaluated with the integral of the signals in each contraction, instead of the signal itself. In order to investigate the performance of the regressors, the R2 value was evaluated and statistically compared among the different cases. A higher R2 mean values was obtained with the single linear ND model based regressor and the global ND model-bases regressor. Results suggest that using the HDEMG decomposition similar or even better performance can be achieved for estimating the contractile force of a muscle. Limitsof this work, due to time and facilities constraints, are mainly related to the numerosity of subjects involved for the analysis. Future development should also investigate dynamic contractions and different muscles.

Investigating the Correlation between Force Output, Strains, and Pressure for Active Skeletal Muscle Contractions

Abstract:Experimental observations suggest that the force output of the skeletal muscle tissue can be correlated to the intra-muscular pressure generated by the muscle belly. However, pressure often proves difficult to measure through in-vivo tests. Simulations on the other hand, offer a tool to model muscle contractions and analyze the relationship between muscle force generation and deformations as well as pressure outputs, enabling us to gain insight into correlations among experimentally measurable quantities such as principal and volumetric strains, and the force output. In this work, a correlation study is performed using Pearson's and Spearman's correlation coefficients on the force output of the skeletal muscle, the principal and volumetric strains experienced by the muscle and the pressure developed within the muscle belly as the muscle tissue undergoes isometric contractions due to varying activation profiles. The study reveals strong correlations between force output and the strains at all locations of the belly, irrespective of the type of activation profile used. This observation enables estimation on the contribution of various muscle groups to the total force by the experimentally measurable principal and volumetric strains in the muscle belly. It is also observed that pressure does not correlate well with force output due to stress relaxation near the boundary of muscle belly.
