Abstract:Dance Education redefines the nature of dance pedagogy today, setting it within a holistic and encompassing framework, and argues for an approach to dance education from a socio-cultural and philosophical perspective. In the past, dance education has focused on the learning of dance, limited to Western-based societies, with little attention to how dance is learned and applied globally. This book seeks to re-frame the way dance education is defined, approached and taught by looking beyond the privileged Western dance forms to compare education from different cultures. Structured into three parts, this book examines the following essential questions: - What is dance? What defines dance as an art form? - How and where is dance performed and for what purpose? - How do social contexts shape the making and interpretation of dance? The first part covers the history of dance education and its definition. The second part discusses current contexts and applications, including global contexts and the ability to apply and comprehend dance education in a variety of contexts. This book opens up definitions, rather than categorising, so that dance is not presented in a hierarchical form. The third part continues to define dance education in ways that have not been discussed in the past: informal contexts. The book then returns to the original definition of dance education as a way of knowing oneself and the world around us, ending on the philosophical application of this self-knowledge as a way to be in the world and to engage with others, regardless of background. Abstract:▪ Abstract Since the mid-1980s, there has been an explosion of dance studies as scholars from a variety of disciplines have turned their attention to dance. Anthropologists have played a critical role in this new dance scholarship, contributing comparative analyses, critiquing colonial and ethnocentric categories, and situating studies of dance and movement within broader frameworks of embodiment and the politics of culture. This review highlights ethnographic and historical studies that foreground dance and other structured movement systems in the making of colonial cultures; the constitution of gender, ethnic and national identities; the formation of discourses of exoticization; and the production of social bodies. Several works that employ innovative approaches to the study of dance and movement are explored in detail.

Abstract:Abstract As human beings and artists, what we produce, as well as our own selves, are visibly influenced by a complex ensemble of processes that take place around us and, in time, we can actually be regarded as their result. This evolutionary principle also applies to the role that body expression has in the wide specter of arts, including in dramatic dance and dramatic theatre. All along the XXth century and up until the first decade of the XXIst century, new performative genres have developed, for example, under the influence of political, social and cultural theories and philosophies. The result was the evolution of numerous alternative forms, supported by revolutionary theories in the dramatic field and by new approaches towards performance. Among these, we can find concepts like physical theatre, total theatre and dance theatre, all of them focusing on body expression. A notable aspect of these changes is the fact that they share the recurrent idea of a fusion between different artistic forms, incorporating dance, dramatic play and other theatrical elements in the creative processes and their outputs.
A Pedagogy of Decolonial Choreography: Reflections of A South Asian Dance Practitioner

Abstract:Focusing on Sri Lankan dance and placing it on the broader spectrum of South Asian dance, I propose a pedagogical process that engages critically with colonial past and present realities, a pedagogy that I term decolonial choreography. A South Asian dancer born and bred in Sri Lanka, I studied and performed the Kandyan dance of Sri Lanka and the Kathak dance of India, and received a PhD in the United States. I have also taught South Asian dances in high schools and universities in the US. Based on my experience as a researcher, educator, and choreographer, I present a pedagogy of decolonial choreography that can be used when teaching and performing South Asian dances in postsecondary dance education. Instead of teaching South Asian dances as exotic, orientalist cultural expressions, decolonial choreography introduces novel critical choreographies resulting from its analytical engagement with South Asian dance and its colonial and postcolonial histories.

Abstract:This study investigates opportunities for and challenges faced by Chinese dance and movement educators at the higher education level in the United States, drawing from interviews with seven influential Chinese dance and movement academics. The article probes the boundaries of what is considered Chinese dance in the US context, including Chinese interdisciplinary xiqu (often mistranslated as Chinese opera) and martial arts. Background information gathered from US dance and theater departments indicates the lack of Chinese dance and movement courses overall and describes the common formats for including these forms in higher education curricula. The interview discussion highlights the navigation involved in teaching Chinese dance and movement in the United States via four major categories: Institutional, Curricular, Pedagogical, and Cultural issues.
Teaching Dance as a Multi-Spatial/Multimedia Practice: Reflections on De- vising Contemporary Dance Pedagogy in University Spaces

Abstract:The last ten years have seen a remarkable rise in the number of art and dance degree programs in universities worldwide. This essay originates in my experience of having taught for three years (2019–2022) on an ad-hoc basis at one such program in a private Indian university. I describe some of my pedagogic methodologies and creative teaching experiments devised during my tenure and that were dedicated to questions of space and multimedia in dance and performance research. I examine how these methodologies and experiments were not just creative in nature but also triggered by: a. the output- driven approach of private-university systems, and b. the precarity of my own status as an adjunct teaching faculty and a “contemporary”—by which I mean non- classical, non-traditional—dancer in the Indian context. Dance scholar Janet O’Shea, in her essay Decolonising the Curriculum? Unsettling Possibilities for Performance Training, critiques the structure of the university as both “colonial and corporate” (750), and points at its links with the “precarity of neoliberalism” (750). I resonate with O’Shea’s position and acknowledge the neocolonial and neoliberal tendencies of private universities in India that idolize Euro-American university models in their approach to higher education. However, I also argue that these universities, with their advocacy for the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary forms of research, mostly aimed at claiming the “cutting-edge” in the liberal art and education industry, inadvertently generate scope for upsetting the traditional hierarchies and trajectories of dance pedagogy and challenging the exclusive notion of dance itself.
Exploring the past to navigate the future: examining histories of higher dance education in China in an internationalized context

Abstract:China has a rich history of dance education and has established prominent tertiary dance institutions. Coupled with this is a growing global interest to engage with China, and connections are developing between Chinese and non-Chinese tertiary dance institutions. Within this curiosity and internationalization of dance education, there is the potential for authentic and exciting dialogue and exchange to occur. However, to allow such interactions to be the most beneficial it is of interest to look at the past of dance education in China to navigate the present and the future. Therefore, this article seeks to critically examine histories of higher dance education in China, to then provide critical understandings of higher dance education in China in the present and how these histories might inform future dance education. Within this article, there is a purposeful focus on the meanings of dance education in China, the relationship between politics and dance, and the examination-orientated education philosophies in teaching and learning dance within a Chinese context.

Abstract:Dancers and choreographers have always been navigating disability within an ableist representational form. This article questions the ableist histories of modern dance in the United States and seeks to redefine how disability is conceived of within the field of dance. The article explores five themes found within archival research, including overcoming narratives, symbiotic and inseparability of dance and disability, denial of disability, changing choreographic practices, and disability aesthetics. Examples of these themes are found in primary source documents about and by Martha Graham, Ted Shawn, and Doris Humphrey and contextualized throughout the article with dance and disability studies theorization.
A Nonverbal Language for Imagining and Learning: Dance Education in K–12 Curriculum

Abstract:Curriculum theorists have provided a knowledge base concerning aesthetics, agency, creativity, lived experience, transcendence, learning through the body, and the power of the arts to engender visions of alternative possibilities in culture, politics, and the environment. However, these theoretical threads do not reveal the potential of K–12 dance education. Research on nonverbal communication and cognition, coupled with illustrative programs, provides key insights into dance as a distinct performing art discipline and as a liberal applied art that fosters creative problem solving and the acquisition, reinforcement, and assessment of nondance knowledge. Synthesizing and interpreting theory and research from different disciplines that is relevant to dance education, this article addresses cognition, emotion, language, learning styles, assessment, and new research directions in the field of education.

Abstract:This article analyzes ways in which dance as labor and artist as a specific subjectivity relate to the material conditions of their production within contexts shaped by neoliberal notions of freedom, ideologies of liberal democracy, and the logic of global capitalism. The discussion focuses on contemporary dance practices that embody some of these values by striving to be more egalitarian, thus giving performers more agency in how they participate in creative processes that lead to a collectively created performance work. This analysis emphasizes the tension between these collaborative practices and modes of producing and distributing financial and symbolic, as well as cultural forms of capital in ways that resist and/or reproduce exploitative aspects of capitalism. Examining some works by Yvonne Rainer, Xavier Le Roy, and Tino Sehgal enables the theorization of the entrepreneurial artistic archive as well as practices of crediting creative labor in relation to notions of capital, ownership, collaboration, and consequently who dance-art makers and performers become as politically progressive artists.

Abstract:Abstract Since the turn of the millennium, there has been a heightened emphasis on the quality of teaching and learning in higher education, with an urge to reform the relationship between teachers and students. During this same period, a growing body of research has been conducted on unequal power dynamics in the teaching of dance technique. In this study, I am doing a literature review of 20 articles published between 1998 and 2020, which especially addressed dance technique and power dynamics in the context of higher education. I am particularly exploring strategies proposed in the literature to challenge unequal power dynamics within dance technique training in higher education. Through a thematic analysis of the articles, I have identified three clusters of strategies in the material: reflexivity of traditions in dance, activity , and embodiment . The research shows that there is a rather high interest in continuing and reforming the teaching of dance technique, and that there are several examples of empirical research related to heightening the students’ activity in their learning process. However, there is still a need for more research on this topic, especially concerning the connection between embodiment and empowerment.
A reimagined world: international tertiary dance education in light of COVID-19

Abstract:<span>Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is currently sweeping the globe. With this pandemic impacting social, political and economic spheres, this article unpacks COVID-19 in relation to international tertiary dance education, asking: How are we sustaining international relationships and global dialogues within dance education in light of COVID-19? What might be new ways of engaging internationally if we are not physically able to travel in the ways we did before COVID-19? And how are we becoming creative with our dance education within this time of online learning, teaching and researching, and what might this offer international tertiary dance education? Through an auto-narrative approach we share three experiences from these early days within a changing wold, where we reflect on our role and practices as dance educators and researchers navigating these times. Themes of innovation, motivation, cultural agendas, slow scholarship, online pedagogy, and virtual and corporeal mobility are identified and discussed in relation to the potential future(s) for international tertiary dance education in a COVID-19 world.</span>

Abstract:In Corporeal Politics, leading international scholars investigate the development of dance as a deeply meaningful and complex cultural practice across time, placing special focus on the intertwining of East Asia dance and politics and the role of dance as a medium of transcultural interaction and communication across borders. Countering common narratives of dance history that emphasize the US and Europe as centers of origin and innovation, the expansive creativity of dance artists in East Asia asserts its importance as a site of critical theorization and reflection on global artistic developments in the performing arts. Through the lens of “corporeal politics”—the close attention to bodily acts in specific cultural contexts—each study in this book challenges existing dance and theater histories to re-investigate the performer's role in devising the politics and aesthetics of their performance, as well as the multidimensional impact of their lives and artistic works. Corporeal Politics addresses a wide range of performance styles and genres, including dances produced for the concert stage, as well as those presented in popular entertainments, private performance spaces, and street protests.

Abstract:<span>Heatwaves, extinct species, and broadly polluted areas worldwide are apparent signs of the human-caused ecological crises. Scholars agree that a collective ecological change is needed to save the Earth. Thus, we must critically reflect how we, as dance educators, are dependent on how dance is defined, and how its educational aims and practices are justified in the era of ecocrisis. In this article, we suggest an EcoJustice approach to dance education. This theoretical study is based on the EcoJustice education framework but draws from our practices as dance educators and the directors of community dance projects. In this article, we open up a discussion on the ways that the processes of dance education can lead to an ecosocially informed paradigm shift. We will suggest three aspects considering the three aspects of an EcoJustice approach to dance education: 1) celebrating diversity, 2) recognizing the lived body, and 3) practicing co-creation.</span>

Abstract:This article deploys the anachronistic term 'Negro dance' to query the relations between American modem dance and black concert dance from 1930, when the two practices emerged in tandem, to 1967-68 when 'black dance' replaced 'Negro dance' in common usage. During this period modern dance and Negro dance staged interdependent representations of blackness, whiteness and queerness on the American stage. These representations did not necessarily reduce to either the skin colour or the sexual orientation of the dancers. Rather, blackness, whiteness and queerness became perceptual constructs on stage, ways for linking physical bodies and social meanings. For most spectators, the visibility of blackness opposed the invisibility of whiteness. While queerness was visible to some spectators, it remained invisible to others. This larger argument is illustrated through a case study of Katherine Dunham's reception from the mid-1930s to the mid-1940s. During the heyday of the Popular Front, only a few spectators recognized Dunham's performance of diaspora. During the years of the Second World War her performance of diaspora became legible to a broad range of theatre-goers. At the same time some spectators came to perceive her performance of black sexual dissidence.
