Abstract:Lignin, which can be recycled from bioethanol and paper production wastes, is the second largest renewable resource. However, studies and applications on sustainable upgrading of lignin are extremely limited and most of them only focus on its combustion to obtain energy. The abundance of reactive groups in lignin makes it a potential feedstock for the production of sustainable low carbon footprint value-added materials. Among them, the preparation of flocculants from lignin has attracted much attention. This paper systematically reviews recent progress of low carbon footprint lignin-based flocculants. The modification methods for the production of lignin-based flocculants, Mannich, sulfonation, carboxylation, crosslinking and graft copolymerization, and the flocculation mechanisms in wastewater treatment are discussed emphatically. Moreover, the factors affecting the flocculation performance of lignin-based flocculants, including internal factors, such as charge density, molecular weight, conformation, and external factors, such as dosage, treatment time, wastewater pH, and temperature are discussed in detail, which are conducive to design, production and application of lignin-based flocculants for lower carbon footprint. Furthermore, we critically point out the current deficiencies of the lignin-based flocculants and the challenges facing commercialization, then we propose the corresponding possible solutions. The production and application of high-efficiency lignin-based flocculants are of great significance for resource conservation, low carbon footprint, and wastewater reuse.

Abstract:Sludge disposal is an integral part of wastewater treatment systems, and its cost usually accounts for more than half of the total operation cost. Sludge disposal technology is facing challenges and opportunities simultaneously and can still be improved. Sludge dewatering is an essential process in sludge disposal, and it is important for the effective reduction of the final processing cost. Coagulation/flocculation is a relatively mature, cost-effective, user-friendly sludge dewatering technology. In this work, coagulation/flocculation and their combinations with other pretreatments, including dewatering mechanisms, are reviewed. Various coagulants/flocculants used in sludge dewatering, including inorganic coagulants, organic synthetic and natural polymeric flocculants, and bioflocculants, are introduced in detail because coagulants/flocculants are the key in coagulation/flocculation. The different factors that influence the dewatering performance of these coagulants/flocculants are also presented briefly. Moreover, aiming at the complicated composition of sludge and its treatment difficulty, the prospects and technical developments of coagulation/flocculation in sludge dewatering are discussed.

Abstract:Hybrid materials are products which are composed of two or more different types of components in one polymeric matrix. Hybrid materials have been receiving increased attention by researchers in recent years due to their unique properties and superior performance compared to that of conventional inorganic coagulants and organic polymeric flocculants. This paper attempts to discuss various scientific aspects of hybrid materials that are used in coagulation–flocculation process. This review covers the fundamental aspects of preparation, characterization as well as the application of hybrid materials in coagulation/flocculation of wastewater. The properties of hybrid materials are reviewed in terms of chemical, physical, thermal, morphological as well as structural characteristics. Emphasis is given on the application of hybrid materials in treating wastewater under different conditions, through coagulation and flocculation method. It covers various research works efforts which are being carried out over the past decade with respect to hybrid materials used in treating wastewater.

One-pot preparation of lignin-based cationic flocculant and its application in dye wastewater

Abstract:Lignin shows good potential as a flocculant material, but more complex reaction processes are often required to obtain products with high flocculation performance. In this work, kraft lignin, acrylamide, and 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride were used as materials to prepare lignin-based flocculants (CPKL) using a one-pot method. The flocculation performance was significantly improved by the optimization of the synthesis conditions. Congo Red, an anionic azo dye, was used as a simulated contaminant to test the flocculation performance. Influencing factors such as flocculant dose, pH, and initial dye concentration were evaluated. The jar test results showed that CPKL has the advantages of a wide flocculation window, strong pH adaptability and the ability to maintain a high decolorization rate at different dye concentrations. Charge neutralization was the main flocculation mechanism, and adsorption bridging showed significant effects only at higher dye concentrations. In addition, lignin-based flocculants (CPKL-s) were prepared by gradient acid fractionation of kraft lignin (APKL-s), and their flocculation performance were further investigated. Among them, the product (CPKL-4) obtained by modifying the grade precipitated at pH 4 (APKL-4) exhibited good flocculation performance with a low dose and high decolorization rate. This method is environmentally friendly, technically feasible and has attractive application prospects in water treatment.

Abstract:Humic acids (HAs) are characterized as recalcitrant compounds in landfill leachate. In the present study, considering the HA removal as well as some traditional indexes such as chemical oxygen demand (CODCr), color and turbidity removals from landfill leachate, the performance of coagulation–flocculation (CF) process using iron-based coagulants was optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). The results achieved using polyferric sulfate (PFS) were compared with those using conventional coagulants such as ferric chloride 6-hydrate (FeCl3·6H2O), ferric sulfate 7-hydrate (Fe2(SO4)3·7H2O). The quadratic models developed for responses indicated the optimum conditions were PFS dose of 8g/L at pH 6.0, FeCl3·6H2O dose of 10g/L at pH 8.0 and Fe2(SO4)3·7H2O dose of 12g/L at pH 7.5. Compromising to simultaneously optimize, the optimum conditions resulted in the CODCr, color, turbidity and HA removal of 56.38%, 63.38%, 89.79%, 70.41% for PFS whereas 68.65%, 93.31%, 98.85%, 80.18% for FeCl3·6H2O and 55.87%, 74.65%, 94.13%, 53.64% for Fe2(SO4)3·7H2O, respectively. The results of confirmatory experiments agreed well with the model predictions, which demonstrated that RSM can achieve good predictions with the least number of required experiments. Meanwhile, the relatively appreciable removals of HA and CODCr indicated that CF process as a pretreatment could remove recalcitrant compounds in leachate effectively.

Abstract:Industrial wastewater is categorized as a voracious consumer of fresh water and a high-strength source of pollution. Coagulation–flocculation is a simple and cost-effective technique for removing organic/inorganic compounds and colloidal particles from industrial effluents. Despite the outstanding natural properties, biodegradability, and efficacy of natural coagulants/flocculants (NC/Fs) in industrial wastewater treatment, their significant potential to remediate such effluents is underappreciated, particularly in commercial scale applications. Most reviews on NC/Fs focused on the possible application of plant-based sources such as plant seeds, tannin, certain vegetables/fruit peels, and their lab-scale potential. Our review expands the scope by examining the feasibility of using natural materials from other sources for industrial effluent decontamination. By analyzing the latest data on NC/Fs, we identify the most promising preparation techniques for making these materials stable enough to compete with traditional options in the marketplace. An interesting presentation of the results of various recent studies has also been highlighted and discussed. Additionally, we highlight the recent success of using magnetic-natural coagulants/flocculants (M-NC/Fs) in treating diverse industrial effluents, and discuss the potential for reprocessing spent materials as a renewable resource. The review also offers different concepts for suggested large-scale treatment systems used by MN-CFs.

Abstract:Volumes of oily wastewater are inevitably generated by every walk of life. The removal of oil particles from oil-contaminated wastewater which is characterized as huge amounts, intricate composition, and great threats to human health and the ecological environment is a research hotspot in water treatment fields. Due to high treatment costs and undesirable treatment efficiencies, oily wastewater treatment remains a topical and urgent issue. At present, coagulation/flocculation as an indispensable oily wastewater treatment technology receives much attention because it is very well established, economical, practical and relatively efficient. The influencing factors of oil wastewater treatment by coagulation/flocculation have also been summarized in-depth, like dosage, pH, etc. In consideration of its complex composition and treatment difficulty, this paper will also compare the treatment effects of different coagulants/flocculants used alone and combined effects in oily wastewater treatment: inorganic coagulants, organic synthetic polymeric flocculants, natural flocculants and modified polymeric flocculants. Additionally, in this review, the mechanisms of removing oily substance by coagulation/flocculation are emphasized. Given strict emission standards and the refractory nature of oily wastewater, the combination process with coagulation/flocculation, such as electrocoagulation, coagulation-membrane filtration hybrid process, and coagulation/flocculation-flotation can present better application potential and are discussed in this review. To provide a proper choice in practical application, the operating cost of coagulation and several conventional technologies are also compared. Finally, the existing challenges in the treatment of oily wastewater by coagulation are analyzed, and the feasible research direction is proposed.

Abstract:Abstract Wastewater issues became a complex challenge in the world. There are several methods in wastewater treatment, such as chemical, physical, biological, and the combination of each method. However, each process has advantages and disadvantages. The physicochemical methods are common methods used in wastewater treatment, such as adsorption and coagulation. Adsorption and coagulation are excellent methods to remove pollutants. The adsorption process is greatly influenced by pH, adsorbent dose, temperature, and contact time. Coagulant dose, settling time, and pH are the main factors in the coagulation process. Chemical material as an adsorbent and coagulant has been studied in previous research, but recently, to substitution chemical materials is a challenging subject. Natural substances are potential new materials in wastewater treatment and became popular due to their efficiency and environment friendly characteristics. This review investigated the role of adsorption and coagulation in wastewater treatment and the utilization of natural materials as adsorbents and coagulants.
Preparation of a Lignin-Based Cationic Flocculant and Its Application in Kaolin Suspension Treatment

Abstract:The preparation of an environmentally friendly and efficient flocculant for solid-liquid separation in industrial wastewater is highly important. In this study, a novel cationic flocculant (AL-g-PAMA) was synthesized by a thermal initiation method using alkali lignin (AL) as the main chain and acrylamide (AM) and methacrylamido propyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) as the grafted side chains. The structure, thermal stability, and surface morphology of the copolymers were investigated by various characterization methods. The results indicated the successful synthesis of AL-g-PAMA. AL-g-PAMA was applied to improve solid-liquid separation in kaolin suspensions. The results showed that AL-g-PAMA had excellent flocculation-sedimentation and dewatering efficiency. When the dosage of AL-g-PAMA #5 was 600.0 g/t(s), the thickness of the compressed layer was 2.2 cm, the floc settling velocity was 24.1 cm/min, and the transmittance of the supernatant was 84.0%. The moisture content of the filter cake decreased from 55.0% to 43.4% after treatment with AL-g-PAMA #5. The results of zeta potential and focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM) analysis indicated that bridging and electroneutralization were the main flocculation mechanisms. Therefore, this study extends the potential for using lignin as a bioflocculant and provides a feasible approach to efficiently purify high-turbidity wastewater.

Customized Utilization Strategies of Industrial Lignin to Produce Adsorbents and Flocculants Based on Fractionation and Adequate Structural Interpretation

Abstract:Lignin, a by-product of pulping and biorefinery, has great potential to replace petrochemical resources for wastewater purification. However, the defects of lignin, such as severe heterogeneity, inferior reactivity and poor solubility, characterize the production process of lignin-based products by high energy consumption and serious pollution. In this study, several lignin fractions with relatively homogeneous structure were first obtained by organic solvent fractionation, and their structures were fully deciphered by various characterization techniques. Subsequently, each lignin component was custom-valued for wastewater purification based on their structural characteristics. Benefiting from the high reactivity and reaction accessibility, the lignin fraction (lignin-1) refined by dissolving in ethanol and n-butanol could been used as a raw material to produce cationic lignin-based flocculant (LBF) in a copolymerization system using green, cheap and recyclable ethanol as solvent. The lignin fraction (lignin-2) extracted by methanol and dioxane showed low reactivity and high carbon content, which was used to produce lignin-based activated carbon (LAC) with phosphoric acid as activator. Moreover, the influences of synthetic factors on the purification capacity were discussed, and the LBF and LAC produced under the optimal conditions showed distinguished purification effect on kaolin suspension and heavy metal wastewater, respectively. Furthermore, the corresponding purification mechanism and external factors were also elaborated. It is believed that this cleaner production strategy is helpful for the valorization of lignin in wastewater resources.

Abstract:Currently, lignin is mainly produced in pulping processes, but it is considered as an under-utilized chemical since it is being mainly used as a fuel source. Lignin contains many hydroxyl groups that can participate in chemical reactions to produce value-added products. Flocculants, adsorbents, and dispersants have a wide range of applications in industry, but they are mainly oil-based chemicals and expensive. This paper reviews the pathways to produce water soluble lignin-based flocculants, adsorbents, and dispersants. It provides information on the recent progress in the possible use of these lignin-based flocculants, adsorbents, and dispersants. It also critically discusses the advantages and disadvantages of various approaches to produce such products. The challenges present in the production of lignin-based flocculants, adsorbents, and dispersants and possible scenarios to overcome these challenges for commercial use of these products in industry are discussed.

Abstract:More than 695.7 million m 3 of papermaking wastewater is discharged globally. It contains a mixture of complex pollutants, of which lignin is the major constituent (600–1000 mg/L) of papermaking black liquor, making it the second-largest energy-containing biomass globally and accounting for 47.4% and 59.4% of chemical oxygen demand (16,400 ± 120 mg/L) and chroma (3100 ± 22.32 mg/L) of papermaking wastewater. The complex process and dissolved pollutants are responsible for high pH, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, dark color, and toxicity. Papermaking wastewater has emerged as a substantial source of environmental pollution as the conventional wastewater treatment processes are high cost and seldom efficacious. This work introduces the shortcomings of the common treatment methods for papermaking wastewater and lignin, focusing on lignin biodegradation and discussing the metabolic pathways and application prospects of lignin-degrading microbial species. A comprehensive review of the existing lignin treatment methods has proposed that the reasonable amalgamation of biodegradation and various physicochemical techniques are environmentally friendly, sustainable, and economical. Lignin extraction from papermaking wastewater by technology combination is an effective approach to recover valuable organic materials and detoxify wastewater. This review focuses on recent breakthroughs and future trends in papermaking wastewater treatment and lignin removal, with special emphasis on biodegradation, recovery, and utilization of lignin, providing guidance for the mechanism exploration of lignin-degrading microorganisms and the optimization of high-value chemical production.

Abstract:Frequent oceanic oil spill incidents and the discharge of industrial oily wastewaters have caused serious threats to environments, food chains and human beings. Lignin wastes with many reactive groups exist as the byproducts from bioethanol and pulping processing industries, and they are either discarded as wastes or directly consumed as a fuel. To make full use of lignin wastes and simultaneously deal with oily wastewaters, porous lignin-based composites have been rationally designed and prepared. In this review, recent advances in the preparation of porous lignin-based composites are summarized in terms of aerogels, sponges, foams, papers, and membranes, respectively. Then, the mechanisms and the application of porous lignin-based adsorbents and filtration materials for oil/water separation are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of porous lignin-based composites are proposed in the field of oil/water separation. The utilization of abundant lignin wastes can replace fossil resources, and meanwhile porous lignin-based composites can be used to efficiently treat with oily wastewaters. The above utilization strategy opens an avenue to the rational design and preparation of lignin wastes with high-added value, and gives a possible solution to use lignin wastes in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

Application analysis of Fenton /flocculation process for advanced treatment of pulp and papermaking wastewater

Abstract:The relation of H 2 O 2,waste acid(8% FeSO 4),Al 2(SO 4) 3,PAM,CaO and treatment capacity,influent load,COD removal were analyzed based on the long term operation date of a Fenton / flocculation process used for advanced treatment of pulp and papermaking wastewater.The average dosages of H 2 O 2,waste acid,Al 2(SO 4) 3,PAM and CaO to unit volume of wastewater were 0.05 kg/m3,2.18 kg/m3,0.07 kg/m3,0.0075 kg / m3and 0.27 kg / m3,respectively,and the average reagent consumption of COD removed were 0.20 kg /(kgCOD),8.48 kg /(kgCOD),0.27 kg /(kgCOD),0.029 kg /(kgCOD) and 1.06 kg /(kgCOD),respectively.The dosages of H 2 O 2,waste acid,Al 2(SO 4) 3 and CaO increased with the increase of influent load,but PAM had no significant change.The molar ratio of H 2 O 2 / Fe2 +(MH 2 O 2 / Fe2 +) was about 1.0 ~ 2.0,and the cumulative frequency of MH 2 O 2 / Fe2 +between 1.0 and 1.6 was about 93%.The effluent COD and SS were 65 ~ 100 mg / L and 20 ~ 30 mg / L,respectively,and met the Discharge Standard of Water Pollutants for Pulp and Paper Industry(GB 3544-2008).The treatment cost of the advanced process was about 1.01 yuan / m3,in which the chemical cost was 0.58 yuan / m3and accounted for 56.98%.
Preparation and Application of Microbial Flocculant

Abstract:Activated sludge and silt were taken respectively from Hangzhou Sibao Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Shangtang River located in Zhejiang University of Technology. Two strains of microbial flocculant (marked by L_2 and T_2) were screened out of the sludge and silt which were separated and purified by GCI. The optimization conditions for producing microbial flocculant were studied by taking the flocculation effect on suspended liquid of kaoline as reference. The result shows that at temperature of 30 ℃ and pH of 5-7, the culturing period of L_2 and T_2 of 60 h and 36 h respectively, the best flocculation effect is obtained at zymolytic liquid dosage of 1 mL/100 mL. The experiment was made on the printing and dyeing wastewater treatment by using this flocculant. The result shows that the higher removal rate of SS and color is achieved, and settleability of activated sludge is also improved remarkably.

Abstract:Water is an essential element contributing to human life. Evidence shows that only a portion of the water from sewage/tailings is recovered in the consolidated tailings process. The process produces sediments with a high-water content that require special storage. This is problematic because water trapped in such structures might remain there for a long period. This study investigates flocculants that can potentially help these systems. In this publication, we look at how literature has sought to optimise their formulation to enhance dewatering efficiency and present a clear overview and guidance on the main parameters involved, using both theoretical and practical examples. We have assembled over 200 references (majority published 2020 or earlier) in this review article to demonstrate the complexities of designing a flocculation system employing state-of-the-art synthesised, organic, inorganic, and hybrid flocculants. We next go over a few of examples of how to use microscopical techniques to learn more about the flocculation mechanism. This manuscript can be treated as an illustrative, visual, comprehensive view of application of flocculants to wastewater systems.

Abstract:In recent years, the use of chitosan and its derivatives as flocculants in water treatment has received considerable attention due to their many advantages, including their widespread availability, environmental friendliness, biodegradability, and prominent structural features. However, it is a significant strategy for selection and design of the high-performance materials on the basis of their structure-activity relationships. Here we describe several of the chemical modification methods commonly used to prepare chitosan-based flocculants. These methods allow convenient control and adjustment of the structures of the obtained materials to meet the different practical requirements. The influence of structural elements of the chitosan-based flocculants on their flocculation properties are emphasized in this review by examining different flocculation mechanisms and their applications in the treatment of various wastewaters containing different pollutants (insoluble suspended colloids but also dissolved matters). Above all, the chitosan-based flocculants with proper structures by precise structure control bear great application potentials in water treatment.
Occurrence, fate, effects and control of coagulants/flocculants in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge: A review

Abstract:Biomass energy recovery from waste activated sludge (WAS) through anaerobic digestion (AD) is important for the current trend of low-carbon and sustainable wastewater treatment. However, large amounts of coagulants/flocculants accumulate at WAS and their effect on AD is neglected. This review begins with an overview of the potential pathways for coagulants/flocculants to enter the AD process and their fate in sludge. The results indicate that sewer systems, chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) units, chemically enhanced phosphorus removal (CEPR) units, sludge thickeners, and sludge dewatering units all carry coagulants/flocculants into WAS digestion systems. The effects of coagulants/flocculants on WAS digestion are then outlined, concentrating on their impact on AD performance and their effect on biochemical pathways, key enzymes, functional genes, and microbial community succession. The results showed that almost all of the coagulants/flocculants had an adverse effect on AD. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis of the mechanisms through which coagulants/flocculants affect AD was conducted. The findings indicate that most coagulants/flocculants affect methane production by reducing the utilization efficiency of organic substrates, mitigating fermentation inhibitors, regulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and interfering electron transfer. Furthermore, recent research advances in enhancing methane production through pretreatment, additives, and optimization of operating conditions are examined. Of these, pretreatment methods have been extensively studied for their efficacy in promoting the degradation of coagulants/flocculants while increasing methane production. Finally, challenging and urgent questions related to the effect of coagulants/flocculants on sludge AD are raised.
