Abstract:With ever increasing population to feed and shrinking arable land arising from industrialization, we are in a dilemma to survive sustainably along with the ecosystem we belong to. Adding to this, soil is continuously getting contaminated with various heavy metals through multiple anthropogenic practices. Phytoremediation can be one economically feasible solution to soil pollution as plants are natural habitants of soil. Rhizosperic microbes are essentially part of the solution as they aid in promoting the health and wellbeing of the plant species. For a long time, these plant growth promoting rhizospheric bacteria (PGPRs) have established their role in heavy metal laden soil as well. We report of a lead resistant Bacillus sp. isolated from petrochemical waste water at Haldia, West Bengal and its role in promoting germination of Indian mustard and tomato saplings in presence of 1000ppm Pb(NO3)2 along with growth of Indian mustard saplings under metal stress.
