Abstract:The Middle Ages focused obsessively on the old; our era is totally absorbed with the new. In medio stat virtus. In this short note, I advocate a strategy that blends copyright and copyleft for disseminating research results in the sciences. I argue that such a blend may be beneficial in fields such as mathematics and computer science, that it may facilitate the evolution and emergence of improved problem descriptions, whilst at the same time preserving author's rights, and easing researchers' work.

Abstract:In this paper, I examine the relationship between digital humanities, audiovisual media, performing arts practices and the preservation of intangible heritage in the contemporary globalized world. As physical data have nowadays been replaced by digital records made available online with a goal of sustaining historical objects and providing access to them via the internet for specialized researchers and the general public, there is a strong interest in supporting and advancing both basic and applied research on this subject matter. In particular, digital repositories and virtual displays of performing arts enactments (music, dance, theater, and film representations) have come to the fore of scientific and cultural policy debates. The aim of this paper is to broaden the dialogue concerning the transfer from earlier (physical) to latest (virtual) audiovisual archives, while raising certain issues of empirical, ethical, and ontological nature on digital humanities as a means to “enable a new critical lens for understanding traditional humanistic subjects of inquiry” (Parry, 2012: 431).

Abstract:Copyright in the cultural sphere can act as a barrier to the dissemination of high-quality information. On the other hand it protects works of art that might not be made available otherwise. This dichotomy makes the area of copyright difficult, especially when it applies to the digital arena of the web where copying is so easy and natural. Here we present a snapshot of the issues for online copyright, with particular emphasis on the relevance to cultural institutions. We concentrate on Europe and the US; as an example we include a special section dedicated to the situation in Italy.

Abstract:The article considers the social perception of artificial intelligence (AI) as an essential factor having an impact on the digitization, transfer, and popularization of cultural heritage. The article aims at the theoretical comprehension of the digital ontology and implementation of AI in the context of Russian realia. The research relies on comprehensive analysis based on statistical data, using descriptive and comparative methods. The interdisciplinary approach adopted includes reflexive analysis of both positive and negative consequences of the digitalization process. The article examines the peculiarities of the “digital ontology”, deterritorization effect, new actors in the digital process, the effect of digital trust, and opposite views of AI-enthusiasts and AI-alarmists. The article describes objective and subjective reasons for the negative perception of digital artifacts, and states the need to consider the influence of key figures in digital ontology: influencers, stakeholders, and data scientists. The ambivalence of public perception of both artificial intelligence and digital cultural heritage is stated. The research reveals digitization frontiers, which involve three factors: the axiological factor, indicating the need for consistency between a human values system and AI development programs; the subject vector, emphasizing the role of a new type of digital heritage bearers and digital influence actors; ethical factor associated with the need to transform relations with information technologies in order to subordinate them to human reflection and comprehension. The authors conclude that cultural heritage digitization should be aimed at generating a human-centered future.

Abstract:Under a regime of limited economic incentive for creativity and confined commodification of information, humanity produced the greatest portion of human knowledge. To mention some, the Bible, the Qur'an, the Mahābhārata, the Iliad and Odyssey, the Aeneid, the Scandinavian Sagas, the German Lay of the Nibelungs, the Celtic legends of Arthur, the Romances and Chanson De Geste all came to life well before strong economic rights were attached to creativity. Later, Petrarch declaimed the Dolce Stil Novo, Dante wrote the Divina Commedia, Chaucer fathered English literature, Ludovico Ariosto chanted Orlando Furioso, Cervantes unleashed his Don Quixote de la Mancha against windmills and earlier epic literature, and Shakespeare gave immortal life to the love of Romeo and Juliet. Emulation, imitation, plagiarism, borrowing, remixing and recombination had a constant demiurgic power in the history of creativity. However, modern policies have largely forgotten the cumulative and collaborative nature of creativity. In this article, I highlight shortcomings of the copyright principle of exclusivity by rereading the history of aesthetics at the dawn of the networked age.

Abstract:'The art of living with ICTs (information and communication technologies)' today not only means finding new ways to cope, interact and create new lifestyles on the basis of the new digital (network) technologies individually, as 'consumer-citizens'. It also means inventing new modes of living, producing and, not in the least place, struggling collectively, as workers and producers. As the so-called digital revolution unfolds in the context of a neoliberal cognitive and consumerist capitalism, its 'innovations' are predominantly employed to modulate and control both production processes and consumer behavior in view of the overall goal of extracting surplus value. Today, the digital networks overwhelmingly destroy social autonomy, instead engendering increasing social heteronomy and proletarianization. Yet it is these very networks themselves, as technical pharmaka in the sense of French 'technophilosopher' Bernard Stiegler, that can be employed as no other to struggle against this tendency. This paper briefly explores this possibility by reflecting upon current diagnoses of our 'technological situation' by some exemplary post-operaist Marxists from a Stieglerian, pharmacological perspective.

Abstract:Digital competence has been recognized in Europe as one of the 8 key competencies for lifelong learning. The problem of the digital divide as a binary division of the world population into those with and without access to the Internet is still relevant. However, even among the population provided with Internet access, significant differences persist, the so-called second-level digital divide. Digitalization brings enormous opportunities for the education sector with the constructive use of ICT, freeing up time, the most valuable resource in strategizing, from routine tasks to creative, innovative tasks. However, there are also certain threats when the power of this resource is “wasted” on tasks not related to acquiring knowledge and training skills. It seems appropriate, firstly, to develop ICT tools that can reduce the time spent on routine tasks by both teachers and students. Secondly, students need to be encouraged to use ICT regularly, as their intensive use for educational purposes (searching for bibliographic references, using translation software, etc.) leads to improved skills. Thirdly, special programs are needed to reduce the digital divide between students, overcoming both physical inequality (providing schoolchildren from low-income families with access to ICT, high-speed access to educational resources on the Internet) and inequality in skills of ICT usage in the learning process. Both opportunities and threats must be taken into account when strategizing the development of education according to the OTSW methodology proposed by Vladimir L’vovich Quint. At the same time, the human must be at the center of the educational strategizing process.

Abstract:Over the last two decades, culture has changed irreconcilably. No longer the ideological window dressing of cold war politics, it now finds itself at the core of a growing globalized economy. Politically aligned with local, national and international regeneration policies, culture often finds itself being used as a bridging mechanism between different and often conflicting social, political and economic interests. According to the theorist George Yudice (2003), culture is now expedient—there is no way of funding or producing small, medium or large scale art projects that do not bring into alignment a collection of inchoate and seemingly incompatible interests. Map on to this the digitally driven emergence of “convergence culture”—where, as Henry Jenkins (2006) argues, “old and new media collide,” “grassroots and corporate media intersect” and media producers and media consumers “interact in unpredictable ways,”—and you have the most sophisticated, complex and volatile cultural arena in human history. Within this capricious and frequently arbitrary milieu, art has long since lost its own self-asserted right to set itself apart as some form of omnipotent commentator on the ills of mass culture. The shock tactics of the avant-garde are now the stock in trade of advertising agencies and music producers the world over, and art, as we knew it, now has to fight for the oxygen of publicity with sport, daytime television, online social networking and game consoles. It is a losing battle.

Abstract:The current information environment presents opportunities for sharing information and enhancing the public domain of creative resources for education, research and the public good. Because the sharing paradigm for digital resources is fundamentally different from any we experienced in the analog world, practices of non-profit cultural heritage collecting institutions should be re-examined and re-evaluated with respect to aligning mission with new opportunities. One practice that deserves attention, particularly in this new environment, is the continued assertion of intellectual property rights in images of creative works that are themselves in the public domain.

Abstract:Abstract The chapter traces the evolution of digital art produced in the Russian Federation and in the Russian language by critically considering a number of case studies and re-conceptualizing historical periods. It takes into account technologies, institutions, individual artists and artistic networks, and modes of presentation, appreciation and re-contextualization. It contributes to the debates about the nature and focus of art in the digital era by assessing historical, economic and creative factors. It showcases how digital art might be understood as a particular medium, platform, network, aesthetic and function, and it also argues that digital art does not fit into those categories. Instead notions of transformation, scope and duration are used to account for new forms of artistic expression.

Abstract:Abstract This paper explores ways in which scholarly skill and expertise might be embodied in tools and sustainable practices that enable communities to create and manage their own digital archives. We focus particularly on tools and practices related to the recording and annotation of digitized materials. The paper is based on co-production practice in two very different kinds of community. Although the communities are different we find that tools designed for a specific community are valuable for others, thus offering the promise of general tools to support community-centred digitization and potentially also traditional archival practice.

Abstract:Digital humanities and digital literary studies face much the same challenges as contemporary media art: what will become of them once their media are no longer “new”, and the limitations of processing art as data have become more clearly and widely understood? This paper revisits information aesthetics and computer poetics from the 1960s and 1970s, casting them as precursors of today’s digital humanities, with many of the same issues, achievements and failures, and with their own hype cycles of boom and bust. Abstract:The paper examines the peculiarities of digitalization processes influence on the architecture of emerging socio-economic relations. The legal regulation issues of digital technologies and the shifts they cause in public life are considered. The relations arising in connection with the regulation of big data are compared. The evolution of big data into smart content is described. The phenomenon of the "digital twin" is considered, as well as its impact on the social sphere. The tendency to move away from the policy of direct prohibitions in the field of digital technologies and the transition to the control of physical entities (data centers) and the regulation of methods and approaches to data processing (algorithms) is shown. It is noted that the existing expectations from digitalization are overstated. At the same time, the increasing influence of digital technologies significantly changes the existing socio-economic landscape, generating new risks. The answer to these challenges should be the joint work of authorities, business, society and the expert community on the formation of digital culture. It is shown that an important aspect should be the development of expert systems that translate qualitative characteristics into quantitative indicators.
THE IMPACT OF POST-DIGITAL AESTHETICS ON WORKS OF ART IN URBAN SPACE

Abstract:The article is devoted to the influence of post-Internet, post-media or post-digital aesthetics on art projects that exist in urban environment, commonly referred to as "public art". In the dense information and visual field of modern cities, contemporary art becomes an important component in the formation of urban imagery, semantic, value and emotional dominant. At the same time, urban art, carried out by means of social order and designed for communication with the so-called "unprepared viewer", has all the attributes of mass culture, in which the economy of impressions plays a significant role. The article provides an overview of the leading publications on post-Internet, post-media or post-digital aesthetics (L. Manovich, A. Vierkant, B. Sterling, K. Bishop). Further, the author examines the impact of post-digital aesthetics on artworks in urban space, which occurs not so much through the display of art on urban digital screens or through AR and VR technologies via digital public art, but through the production of physical art objects in which artists, aided by computer modeling and programs, use colors, textures, design elements from the virtual environment, placing them in the physical space of the city. These trends are revealed in the projects and practices of Russian artists working in urban environment. The conclusion of the article is that not only the form, but also the nature of the artist–work– public relationship is subject to change, when, due to the interactivity of online communication, the viewer is activated. Virtual and objective realities are synthesized, forming a new cultural space, not limited by online or exhibition space.

Abstract:Today we live in computational abundance whereby our everyday lives and the environment that surrounds us are suffused with digital technologies. This is a world of anticipatory technology and contextual computing that uses smart diffused computational processing to create a fine web of computational resources that are embedded into the material world. Thus, the historical distinction between the digital and the non-digital becomes increasingly blurred, to the extent that to talk about the digital presupposes an experiential disjuncture that makes less and less sense. Indeed, just as the ideas of online or being online have become anachronistic as a result of our always-on smartphones and tablets and widespread wireless networking technologies, so too the term digital perhaps assumes a world of the past.

Abstract:The article deals with the problems of determining the concept of goodwill in terms of digital transformation. There has been proposed a new concept of digital goodwill and studied the problems of determining its content and evaluation. Digital transformation in modern conditions has been found to determine both the pace of economic development and efficient activities and the creation of a successful business reputation. A comparative analysis of the methods for evaluating the results of digitalization was carried out and it was revealed that the performance indicators are similar in many methods, but the number of indicators and the reliability of their assessment is questionable. The analysis of the definitions of the concept of goodwill showed that there is no single, generally accepted definition, goodwill improperly comprises only business reputation. It has been assumed that the concept of goodwill is broader, it comprises a set of characteristics of an organization (business reputation, product quality, technological culture, digital culture, a certain level of production organization, partnerships, market prospects). In the context of digitalization, new types of factors of production appear, which include digital capital; an analysis of the existing definitions of digital capital was carried out and its own was proposed: tangible and intangible identifiable assets and unidentifiable digital assets (digital goodwill and digital competencies of employees), which allow implementing digital technologies and contribute to increasing labor productivity. For the first time the concept of digital goodwill was proposed, under which is meant a good name of the company including the company’s reputation, prestige, customer relations, location, product range, and other things based on the active use of digital technologies in management and having a significant impact on its future income. Key factors of digitalization have been identified, which can serve as targets for the formation of digital goodwill. The problems of evaluating digital goodwill are considered: invisibility (absence in accounting objects), lack of a clear assessment methodology, unavailability of objective information for developing the cash flows.

Abstract:In recent years, it has become common knowledge that culture is the main component for people’s creative communication as well as for the elimination of social differences and political contradictions, the encounter for people of different racial, ethnic, religious hues in a common place, leading thus to the achievement of world peace.Furthermore, the field of culture under proper management, can contribute substantially to improving the economic conditions of different countries, considering the multiple fields of production and dissemination potential of diverse cultural products which, combined with the explosive and rapid growth of telecommunications and the internet, create a considerable number of new jobs.As a result: the growing interest in this sector. However, the legal framework in which the digitization and management of cultural heritage should develop is not always clear enough or, even when it is clear, it is overturned by modern trends, which, for the sake of technology, become massive.It is therefore important to know basic relevant notions and principles for navigating and acting in a politically correct way in the vast and diverse universe of civilization: the present study constitutes an attempt both to specify the notions of cultural heritage and copyright, as well as to detect the possibilities and limitations of digitization and management of cultural heritage as defined by the current legal framework.The aim is the succinct quote of the afore-mentioned, in order that this project will serve as a concise manual easily understood and useful mainly to people not specialized in law.

Abstract:The present article invites the reader to re-appraise the values of memory, imagination, and knowledge from a new perspective and with an abundance of various opinions, ideas, and commentaries. At the beginning of the 21st century, the growth by leaps and bounds of technology has made this re-evaluation even more relevant now that we have access to all kinds of sources of information. Such a fresh perspective becomes feasible and necessary, given the tools and possibilities offered, literally, by a wealth of sources at our fingertips. Using references available in historical documents as well as contemporary electronic and mass media communication, the discussion centers on a thorough analysis of memory and imagination with their obvious effects on the retention of knowledge. The positive outcome of such an approach is also relevant when we take a good look at the quest for knowledge and its intrinsic value. Research of material produced over centuries and millennia leads us to pursue the study of memory and imagination and, through them, perceive the acquisition of knowledge as beneficial and much-needed in the entire process of education.

Abstract:<span>The built environment is literally and metaphorically concrete but its creation from conception through design and construction involves many levels of abstraction. This spectrum of activities between concrete and abstract is complex and unexplored in construction but it will be shown that a deep understanding of this is required to make successful buildings in a modern age of digitalization. ion is the simplification of an entity with a degree of generalization of purpose and causality but also used to promote the idealization of the entity. When abstractions are believed to be real then there are conditions of hyperreality. This article unpacks the nature of abstraction in the creation of the built environment through three vignettes of practice; considering: drawings, project planning and building modelling. ion has been key to making buildings but is growing in significance because of building information modelling. The themes of loss of meaning, loss of control and loss of perspective are used to show that digitalization involves creating a dangerous illusion of the connection between data and reality thus creating a problematic hyperreality. This can be avoided by stronger thinking, more openness about abstractions and less exaggeration of their performance.</span>
