Abstract:Catalysts with a refined electronic structure are highly desirable for promoting the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics and reduce the charge overpotentials for lithium-oxy-gen (Li-O-2) batteries. However, bridging the orbital interactions inside the catalyst with external orbital coupling between catalysts and intermediates for reinforcing OER cata-lytic activities remains a grand challenge. Herein, we report a cascaded orbital-oriented hybridization, namely alloying hybridization in intermetallic Pd3Pb followed by intermo-lecular orbital hybridization between low-energy Pd atom and reaction intermediates, for greatly enhancing the OER electrocatalytic activity in Li -O-2 battery. The oriented orbital hybridization in two axes between Pb and Pd first lowers the d band energy level of Pd atoms in the intermetallic Pd3Pb; during the charging process, the low -lying 4d(xz/yz) and 4d(z)(2) orbital of the Pd further hybridizes with 2p* and 5s orbitals of lithium superoxide (LiO2) (key reaction intermediate), eventually leading to lower energy levels of antibonding and, thus, weakened orbital interaction toward LiO2. As a consequence, the cascaded orbital-oriented hybridization in intermetallic Pd3Pb considerably decreases the activation energy and accelerates the OER kinetics. The Pd3Pb-based Li-O-2 batteries exhibit a low OER overpotential of 0.45 V and superior cycle stability of 175 cycles at a fixed capacity of 1,000 mAh g(-1), which is among the best in the reported catalysts. The present work opens up a way for designing sophisticated Li -O-2 batteries at the orbital level.
Orbital Coupling of PbO7 Node in Single-Crystal Metal-Organic Framework Enhances Li-O2 Battery Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Optimizing the local coordination environment of metal centers in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is crucial yet challenging for regulating the overpotential of lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries. Herein, we report the synthesis of a class of PbO7 nodes in a single crystal MOF (naphthalene-lead-MOF, known as Na-Pb-MOF) to significantly enhance the kinetics of both discharge and charge processes. Compared to the PbO6 node in the single-crystal tetramethoxy-lead-MOF (4OMe-Pb-MOF), the bond length between Pb and O in the PbO7 node of Na-Pb-MOF increases, resulting in weaker Pb 5d-O 2p orbital coupling, which optimizes the adsorption interaction toward intermediates, and thereby promotes the rate-determining steps of both the reduction of LiO2 to Li2O2 and the oxidation of LiO2 to O2 for reducing the activation energy of the overall reaction. Consequently, Li-O2 batteries based on Na-Pb-MOF electrocatalysts exhibit a low total charge-discharge overpotential of 0.52 V and an excellent cycle life of 140 cycles.

Abstract:Pd is generally regarded as an alternative catalyst material to Pt for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, its catalytic activity and durability are much lower than those of Pt. Here, we report a facile approach for the synthesis of intermetallic Pd3Pb square nanoplates enclosed by {100} facets. The use of oleylamine (OAm), oleic acid (OA), and 1-octadecene (ODE) played important roles in the formation of the Pd3Pb intermetallic square nanoplates in high-quality. The Pd3Pb square nanoplates exhibited substantially enhanced ORR properties in terms of activity and durability. In particular, such nanoplates showed higher mass activity (0.62 mA g(Pd)(-1)) and specific activity (3.59 mA cm(-2)), which were 10.3 and 32.6 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C, respectively, due to ligand and geometry effects. Significantly, the Pd3Pb square nanoplates/C were highly stable with 23% loss in specific activity and 21% loss in mass activity after 10000 cycles compared to the Pd3Pb alloy dendritic nanocrystals/C (over 50% loss in specific and mass activities) due to their unique intermetallic structure with high chemical stability.

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have always restricted the development of lithium oxygen batteries (LOBs). Herein, hollow carbon spheres loaded with Pd/Pd4S heterostructure (Pd/Pd4S@HCS) were successfully prepared via the in-situ deposition to improve the electrocatalytic activities for both ORR and OER in LOBs. With the well-dispersed Pd/Pd4S nanoparticles, the hierarchical composite with large specific surface area offers favorable transport channels for ions, electron and oxygen. Especially, the Pd/Pd4S nanoparticles could exhibit excellent electrochemical performance for ORR and OER due to their intrinsic catalytic property and interfacial effect from the heterostructure. Therefore, the LOBs with Pd/Pd4S@HCS as cathode catalyst show improved specific capacities, good rate ability and stable cycling performance.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt)-based multi-metallic nanostructures show great promise as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cell cathodes. Herein, we report a simple, one-step surfactant-directed synthetic strategy to directly synthesize tri-metallic PtPdNi mesoporous nanospheres (PtPdNi MNs) in a high yield. The synthesis could be accomplished in aqueous solution at mild reaction temperature (40 degrees C) without needing any organic solvent, yielding well-dispersed PtPdNi MNs with uniform shape and narrow size distribution. Benefitting from their unique mesoporous and highly open structure and tri-metallic composition, the as-synthesized PtPdNi MNs demonstrate superior catalytic activity and stability for ORR in acidic solution in comparison with PtPdNi nanodendrites (PtPdNi NDs), PtPd MNs and commercial Pt/C catalyst. Abstract:Li-O2 batteries (LOBs) are considered as one of the most promising energy storage devices due to their ultrahigh theoretical energy density, yet they face the critical issues of sluggish cathode redox kinetics during the discharge and charge processes. Here we report a direct synthetic strategy to fabricate a single-atom alloy catalyst in which single-atom Pt is precisely dispersed in ultrathin Pd hexagonal nanoplates (Pt1Pd). The LOB with the Pt1Pd cathode demonstrates an ultralow overpotential of 0.69 V at 0.5 A g-1 and negligible activity loss over 600 h. Density functional theory calculations show that Pt1Pd can promote the activation of the O2/Li2O2 redox couple due to the electron localization caused by the single Pt atom, thereby lowering the energy barriers for the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions. Our strategy for designing single-atom alloy cathodic catalysts can address the sluggish oxygen redox kinetics in LOBs and other energy storage/conversion devices.
Pd Nanoparticles on Zno-Passivated Porous Carbon by Atomic Layer Deposition: an Effective Electrochemical Catalyst for Li-O-2 Battery

Abstract:Uniformly dispersed Pd nanoparticles on ZnO-passivated porous carbon were synthesized via an atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique, which was tested as a cathode material in a rechargeable Li-O-2 battery, showing a highly active catalytic effect toward the electrochemical reactions-in particular, the oxygen evolution reaction. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed discrete crystalline nanoparticles decorating the surface of the ZnO-passivated porous carbon support in which the size could be controlled in the range of 3-6 nm, depending on the number of Pd ALD cycles performed. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Pd Kedge revealed that the carbon-supported Pd existed in a mixed phase of metallic palladium and palladium oxide. The ZnO-passivated layer effectively blocks the defect sites on the carbon surface, minimizing the electrolyte decomposition. Our results suggest that ALD is a promising technique for tailoring the surface composition and structure of nanoporous supports for Li-O-2 batteries.

Abstract:Pd-based materials are promising alternatives to Pt for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR), which is the critical electrode reaction for many oxygen-electrocatalysis-based energy storage and conversion devices. Modification of electronic structure and support effect are powerful tools for boosting ORR performance of Pd-based catalysts. Herein, phosphorus (P) doped-palladium sulfide (Pd4S) nanoparticles decorated on P/sulfur (S) co-doped reduced graphene oxide (P-Pd4S/PSG) is prepared via a one-step solvothermal method using triphenylphosphine sulfide as both P and S sources. The incorporation of P effectively tailors the electronic structure and coordination environment of Pd4S, while P-Pd4S decorated on PSG generates strong metal-support interaction, which synergistically promotes electrocatalytic performance towards ORR. The proposed synthetic method offers a feasible route for the rational construction of heteroatoms-doped carbon − metal composites with high-performance for ORR and other potential energy applications.

Abstract:Although noble metals, metal oxides and their combinations are the most studied catalysts for Li−O2 cells, it is unclear yet about their intrinsically synergetic catalytic mechanism. Here, a hybrid nanostructure composed of two-dimensional (2D) δ-MnO2 nanosheets and Pd nanocrystals (NCs) was prepared and investigated as a promising catalyst for Li−O2 cells. Li−O2 cells with the Pd/δ-MnO2 hybrid catalyst exhibit low polarization (terminal charge/discharge voltages 4.2V/2.58V at 1600mAg−1), good rate capability (2400mAhg−1 at a high current density of 1600mAg−1), and long cycle life (133 cycles/247 cycles with limited capacities of 1000mAhg−1/500mAhg−1) due to the synergetic catalytic effect between δ-MnO2 and Pd. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations clarify that the charge transfer between δ-MnO2 and Pd underlies their synergetic catalytic mechanism, where the presence of Pd on the one side of δ-MnO2 sheets facilitates the formation of Li2O2 on the opposite side of the δ-MnO2 sheets. The DFT calculations also indicate that it is energetically possible for the formation of stable, electronically conductive LiO2 on the δ-MnO2 sheets with Pd on the opposite side. This work gives a mechanistic insight into the synergetic catalytic effect between noble metal and metal oxide, and provides an effective strategy for designing high-performance catalysts especially with a 2D configuration.
Optimizing Eg Orbital Occupancy of Transition Metal Sulfides by Building Internal Electric Fields to Adjust the Adsorption of Oxygenated Intermediates for Li‐O2 Batteries

Abstract:Formation of heterostructures between transition metal sulfides can effectively modulate the occupancy of eg orbital to adjust the antibonding orbital of d‐p hybridization, which greatly determine the adsorption strength between catalyst and intermediates, and the moderate adsorption strength endowed the catalyst improved ORR/OER catalytic activities. Li‐O2 batteries are acknowledged as one of the most promising energy systems due to their high energy density approaching that of gasoline, but the poor battery efficiency and unstable cycling performance still hinder their practical application. In this work, hierarchical NiS2‐MoS2 heterostructured nanorods are designed and successfully synthesized, and it is found that heterostructure interfaces with internal electric fields between NiS2 and MoS2 optimized eg orbital occupancy, effectively adjusting the adsorption of oxygenated intermediates to accelerate reaction kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction. Structure characterizations coupled with density functional theory calculations reveal that highly electronegative Mo atoms on NiS2‐MoS2 catalyst can capture more eg electrons from Ni atoms, and induce lower eg occupancy enabling moderate adsorption strength toward oxygenated intermediates. It is evident that hierarchical NiS2‐MoS2 nanostructure with fancy built‐in electric fields significantly boosted formation and decomposition of Li2O2 during cycling, which contributed to large specific capacities of 16528/16471 mAh g−1 with 99.65% coulombic efficiency and excellent cycling stability of 450 cycles at 1000 mA g−1. This innovative heterostructure construction provides a reliable strategy to rationally design transition metal sulfides by optimizing eg orbital occupancy and modulating adsorption toward oxygenated intermediates for efficient rechargeable Li‐O2 batteries.

Abstract:With more flexible active sites and intermetal interaction, dual-atom catalysts (DACs) have emerged as a new frontier in various electrocatalytic reactions. Constructing a typical p-d orbital hybridization between p-block and d-block metal atoms may bring new avenues for manipulating the electronic properties and thus boosting the electrocatalytic activities. Herein, we report a distinctive heteronuclear dual-metal atom catalyst with asymmetrical FeSn dual atom sites embedded on a two-dimensional C2N nanosheet (FeSn-C2N), which displays excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance with a half-wave potential of 0.914 V in an alkaline electrolyte. Theoretical calculations further unveil the powerful p-d orbital hybridization between p-block stannum and d-block ferrum in FeSn dual atom sites, which triggers electron delocalization and lowers the energy barrier of *OH protonation, consequently enhancing the ORR activity. In addition, the FeSn-C2N-based Zn-air battery provides a high maximum power density (265.5 mW cm-2) and a high specific capacity (754.6 mA h g-1). Consequently, this work validates the immense potential of p-d orbital hybridization along dual-metal atom catalysts and provides new perception into the logical design of heteronuclear DACs.

Abstract:High‐valence metal sites modulated nickel‐vanadium layered double hydroxide (NiV LDH) electrocatalysts with the interfacial oxygen bridge bonds are successfully constructed. Benefitting from the abundant unfilled antibonding orbitals induced by the optimized d‐p orbital hybridization, which is beneficial to spatial charge redistribution and strong electronic coupling, thereby optimizing the adsorption/desorption energy of reaction intermediates and then accelerating the oxygen evolution reaction kinetics. Manipulating the electronic structure and coordination configuration of heterogeneous electrocatalyst is an advantageous strategy to motivate the intrinsic activity but remains challenging. Herein, guided by the theoretical mechanism of the d‐band center and valence‐bond theory, the high‐valence metal‐modulated nickel‐vanadium layered double hydroxides (M‐NiV LDH, M = Zr, and Mo) with interfacial oxygen bridge bonding structure are rationally designed and fabricated, affording a 3D vertically staggered and porous nanosheets array network. Benefitting from the abundant unfilled antibonding orbitals induced by the optimized Zr d‐orbital and O p‐orbital hybridization, the introduction of Zr site is beneficial to accelerate charge transfer kinetics and optimize the deprotonation of OH* as well as lower the O* → OOH* free energy. As a result, the as‐prepared Zr‐NiV LDH exhibits a promising oxygen evolution reaction performance with low overpotential and favorable long‐term stability. This work provides valuable insights into the design of electrocatalysts for electronic regulation and intrinsic activity improvement.

Abstract:The performance of Li-O2 batteries is seriously limited by the sluggish kinetics of the mass transition in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). To explore a useful strategy to overcome these limitations, herein, we constructed a P-doped TiO2/Ti3C2Tx heterostructure (PTT) with local active site optimization, in which the highly conductive substrate anchored the P-TiO2 nanoparticles with a selective adsorption and conversion of LiOx. In contrast to the TiO2/Ti3C2Tx heterostructure with a relatively uniform active site inducing typical toroidal Li2O2, the introduction of P-doping generates a unique nanosheet array Li2O2 on the PTT surface as a discharge product. This unique structure is endowed with a shorter Li+ diffusion path and benefits mass transfer in ORR and OER, facilitating the reaction kinetics. It presents obviously enhanced battery performance with a high specific capacity of 13,482 mAh g−1 and decreased discharge–charge overpotential, as well as superior cycling stability of 190 cycles. Furthermore, this novel and efficient electrocatalyst can stably operate for more than 650 cycles at 1000 mA g−1 with the addition of a LiI redox mediator. This study provides new insight into high-performance electrocatalyst design in Li2O2 related battery system.

Abstract:Deliberately optimizing the d-band position of an active component via electronic and lattice strain tuning is an effective way to boost its catalytic performance. We herein demonstrate this concept by constructing core-shell Au@NiPd nanoparticles with NiPd alloy shells of only three atomic layers through combining an Au catalysis with the galvanic replacement reaction. The Au core with larger electronegativity modulates the Pd electronic configuration, while the Ni atoms alloyed in the ultrathin shells neutralize the lattice stretching in Pd shells exerted by Au cores, equipping the active Pd metal with a favorable d-band position for electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction in an alkaline medium, for which core-shell Au@NiPd nanoparticles with a Ni/Pd atomic ratio of 3/7 exhibit a half-wave potential of 0.92 V, specific activity of 3.7 mA cm-2, and mass activity of 0.65 A mg-1 at 0.9 V, much better than most of the recently reported Pd-even Pt-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Searching for high energy-density electrode materials for sodium ion batteries has revealed Na-deficient intercalation compounds with lattice oxygen redox as promising high-capacity cathodes. However, anionic redox reactions commonly encountered poor electrochemical reversibility and unfavorable structural transformations during dynamic (de)sodiation processes. To address this issue, we employed lithium orbital hybridization chemistry to create Na-O-Li configuration in a prototype P2-layered Na43/60Li1/20Mg7/60Cu1/6Mn2/3O2 (P2-NaLMCM') cathode material. That Li+ ions, having low electronegativity, reside in the transition metal slabs serves to stimulate unhybridized O 2p orbitals to facilitate the stable capacity contribution of oxygen redox at high state of charge. The prismatic-type structure evolving to an intergrowth structure of the Z phase at high charging state could be simultaneously alleviated by reducing the electrostatic repulsion of O-O layers. As a consequence, P2-NaLMCM' delivers a high specific capacity of 183.8 mAh g-1 at 0.05 C and good cycling stability with a capacity retention of 80.2% over 200 cycles within the voltage range of 2.0-4.5 V. Our findings provide new insights into both tailoring oxygen redox chemistry and stabilizing dynamic structural evolution for high-energy battery cathode materials.

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER) is critical for rechargeable metal-air batteries, a typical electrochemical energy storage and conversion technology. This work reports a general approach for the synthesis of Pd@PdO-Co3O4 nanocubes using the zeolite-type metal-organic framework (MOF) as a template. The as-synthesized materials exhibit a high electrocatalytic activity toward OER and ORR, which is comparable to those of commercial RuO2 and Pt/C electrocatalysts, while its cycle performance and stability are much higher than those of commercial RuO2 and Pt/C electrocatalysts. Various physicochemical characterizations and density functional theory calculations indicate that the favorable electrochemical performance of the Pd@PdO-Co3O4 nanocubes is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between PdO and the robust hollow structure composed of interconnected crystalline Co3O4 nanocubes. This work establishes an efficient approach for the controlled design and synthesis of MOF-templated hybrid nanomaterials, and provides a great potential for developing high-performance electrocatalysts in energy storage and conversion.
