Abstract:The insufficient exploration of the interfacial chemistry of Zn anodes and electrolytes in an aqueous environment restricts the application potential of aqueous Zn batteries (AZBs). Herein, a durable anion-derived solid electrolyte interface (SEI) with high ion conduction properties is constructed by designing an aqueous electrolyte with a weakly solvating effect to manipulate the solvation structure of metal ions (Zn2+/Na+). The constructed SEI significantly restrains the dendrite formation and occurrence of adverse reactions on the surface of the Zn anode, endowing the Zn metal anode with high reversibility of deposition/stripping and ultra-long lifespan over 5000 h with an exceptional cumulative capacity of over 2.5 Ah cm(-2). Significantly, the formation mechanism of the SEI, which is realized by the weakly solvating effect to promote the coordination between anions and metal ions (Zn2+/Na+), and the composition distribution of anion-derived inorganic-rich SEI, are clarified in detail. Furthermore, benefiting from the synergy of the elaborate SEI and the regulated electrolyte environment, the Zn//Prussian blue analogue (PBA) full battery can operate with a high voltage platform of 2.1 V and deliver 99.3% capacity retention after 5000 cycles.

Abstract:Secondary batteries based on metal anodes (e.g., Li, Na, Mg, Zn, and Al) are among the most sought-after candidates for next-generation mobile and stationary storage systems because they are able to store a larger amount of energy per unit mass or volume. However, unstable electrodeposition and uncontrolled interfacial reactions occuring in liquid electrolytes cause unsatisfying cell performance and potential safety concerns for the commercial application of these metal anodes. Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) having a higher modulus are considered capable of inhibiting difficulties associated with the anodes and may enable building of safe all-solid-state metal batteries, yet several challenges, such as insufficient room-temperature ionic conductivity and poor interfacial stability between the electrode and the electrolyte, hinder the large-scale development of such batteries. Here, research and development of SSEs including inorganic ceramics, organic solid polymers, and organic-inorganic hybrid/composite materials for metal-based batteries are reviewed. The comparison of different types of electrolytes is discussed in detail, in the context of electrochemical energy storage applications. Then, the focus of this study is on recent advances in a range of attractive and innovative battery chemistries and technologies that are enabled by SSEs. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are outlined to foresee the development of SSEs.

Abstract:Aqueous metal-based batteries have attracted great attention due to their high energy density and high safety. However, currently suppressing the severe parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the metal anodes in aqueous electrolytes remains challenging. Here, a novel "two birds with one stone " strategy of simultaneously reducing water activity and constructing a protective layer on Al anode with a green and low-cost glucose additive is proposed to suppress the HER. Theoretical studies and experimental characterizations confirm that the glucose additive could reduce water activity via the "molecular crowding effect " and form an organic protective layer on Al metal via chemical adsorption. The dual-functional glucose additive exhibits significant suppression on the HER and self-discharge of Al-metal anodes, which endows a flow-based Al-air battery with ultra-high specific capacity of 2886.7 mAh gAl(-1) and energy density of 3675.1 Wh kgAl(-1). This study not only blazes a new path for suppressing HER on Al-metal anodes but also casts new light on aqueous electrolyte design and the stabilization of metal anodes.

Abstract:Aqueous electrolyte is one of the most favored choices for various high-energy, low-cost and safe batteries. However, the undesired parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), especially on high reactive metal anodes, brought by aqueous electrolyte remains the development bottleneck of these batteries. Here, introducing solvents to manipulate the hydrogen-bond network of aqueous electrolyte is proposed to suppress the parasitic HER. Significantly, theoretical simulations and experimental characterizations demonstrate that donor number of the solvents could serve as a descriptor to ability of confining the free water and reducing the water activity. The solvent additive with high donor number exhibits remarkable suppression on the self-discharge and hydrogen evolution of Al anodes in alkaline electrolyte, which endows a flow-based Al-air battery with an outstanding energy density of 3106.04 Wh kg(-1). The findings not only provide a guidance on the rational design of aqueous electrolyte but also expand the application of high-donor solvents.

Abstract:Strengthening water (H2O) interaction is a universal strategy for reducing H2O reactivity, yet often at the expense of kinetics. Here, we unveiled the controllable modulation of molecular structures in aqueous electrolytes and their tailorable electrochemical performance in high-energy aqueous batteries. The H-bond properties and special distributions are identified as crucial parameters to decouple the electrochemical stability and the transport properties of Li+ in the aqueous-based electrolytes. It is found that the mildly solvating ethylene glycol diethyl ether (DEE) is capable of balancing both high-energy Li-ion batteries with a greatly extended electrochemical window of 1.4-5.2 V vs. Li+/Li and high ionic conductivity of 7.2 mS cm(-1) at room temperature with a low salt concentration (1.57 mol/L). LiMn2O4||Li4Ti5O12 aqueous cells deliver outstanding cycling performance over 300 cycles at 1C. One Ah pouch cell is demonstrated with a high energy density of 76.76 Wh kg(-1) at 0.2C and stable cycling performance at room temperature and a low temperature of -20 degrees C. This work provides new insights and strategies to design advanced electrolytes for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:This work provides a novel low‐cost quasi‐solid‐state electrolyte that greatly inhibits self‐corrosion of metal Al anode and promotes uniform Al ions stripping. As a result, the Al–air battery achieves ultra‐high energy density and stable operating voltage using this quasi‐solid‐state electrolyte. Aqueous aluminum–air batteries are attracting considerable attention with high theoretical capacity, low‐cost and high safety. However, lifespan and safety of the battery are still limited by the inevitable hydrogen evolution reaction on the metal aluminum anode and electrolyte leakage. Herein, for the first time, a clay‐based quasi‐solid‐state electrolyte is proposed to address such issues, which has excellent compatibility and a liquid‐like ionic conductivity. The clay with uniform pore channels facilitates aluminum ions uniform stripping and reduces the activity of free H2O molecules by reconstructing hydrogen bonds network, thus suppressing the self‐corrosion of aluminum anode. As a result, the fabricated aluminum–air battery achieves the highest energy density of 4.56 KWh kg−1 with liquid‐like operating voltage of 1.65 V and outstanding specific capacity of 2765 mAh g−1, superior to those reported aluminum–air batteries. The principle of constructing quasi‐solid‐state electrolyte using low‐cost clay may further promote the commercialization of aluminum–air batteries and provide a new insight into electrolyte design for aqueous energy storage system.

Abstract:Temporally intermittent and spatially dispersed renewable energy sources strongly call for large-scale energy storage devices. Aqueous aluminum-ion batteries show great potential for application due to their safety and low cost. Thus far, however, the ideal full-battery configuration is beyond the scope due to shortcomings with regards to suitable anode and cathode materials. Herein, we report a pioneering aqueous aluminum-ion battery system consisting of a Prussian white cathode, 1 M Al2(SO4)3 aqueous electrolyte, and an organic 9,10-anthraquinone anode. The oxidation capability of the Prussian white cathode during the first charging allows for the fabrication of the full battery without pre-inserting aluminum ions, thus making the rocking-chair-type battery feasible. Importantly, the open-framework structure of the Prussian white and distinct enolization charge storage mechanism of 9,10-anthraquinone ensure fast reaction kinetics. The full battery exhibits cycling stability with a capacity retention of 89.1% over 100 cycles at 500 mA g-1, finishing a cycle in about 10 min. This work provides a pathway for developing rechargeable aqueous aluminum-ion batteries.
Aqueous Aluminum Cells: Mechanisms of Aluminum Anode Reactions and Role of the Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interphase

Abstract:Electrochemical cells with aluminum (Al) as the active material offer the benefits of high energy density, low cost, and high safety. Although several research groups have assembled rechargeable Al//MxOy (M = Mn, V, etc) cells with 2 m aqueous Al trifluoromethanesulfonate as an electrolyte and demonstrated the importance of the artificial solid electrolyte interphase (ASEI) on the Al anode for realizing high rechargeable capacity, the reactions of the Al anode in such cells remain underexplored. Herein, we investigate the effects of the ASEI on the charge/discharge cycling stability and activity of Al cells with the abovementioned aqueous electrolyte and reveal that this interphase provides chloride anions to induce the corrosion of Al rather than to support the transportation of Al3+ ions during charge/discharge. Regardless of the ASEI presence/absence, the main reactions at the Al anode during charge/discharge cycling are identified as oxidation and gas evolution, which suggests that the reduction of Al in the employed electrolyte is irreversible. The simple introduction of chloride anions (e.g., 0.15 m NaCl) into the electrolyte is shown to allow the realization of an Al//MnO2 cell with superior performance (discharge working voltage ≈ 1.5 V and specific capacity = 250 mA h/g). Reversible Al Metal Anodes Enabled by Amorphization for Aqueous Aluminum Batteries

Abstract:Aqueous aluminum metal batteries (AMBs) are regarded as one of the most sustainable energy storage systems among post-lithium-ion candidates, which is attributable to their highest theoretical volumetric capacity, inherent safe operation, and low cost. Yet, the development of aqueous AMBs is plagued by the incapable aluminum plating in an aqueous solution and severe parasitic reactions, which results in the limited discharge voltage, thus making the development of aqueous AMBs unsuccessful so far. Here, we demonstrate that amorphization is an effective strategy to tackle these critical issues of a metallic Al anode by shifting the reduction potential for Al deposition. The amorphous aluminum (a-Al) interfacial layer is triggered by an in situ lithium-ion alloying/dealloying process on a metallic Al substrate with low strength. Unveiled by experimental and theoretical investigations, the amorphous structure greatly lowers the Al nucleation energy barrier, which forces the Al deposition competitive to the electron-stealing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Simultaneously, the inhibited HER mitigates the passivation, promoting interfacial ion transfer kinetics and enabling steady aluminum plating/stripping for 800 h in the symmetric cell. The resultant multiple full cells using Al@a-Al anodes deliver approximately a 0.6 V increase in the discharge voltage plateau compared to that of bare Al-based cells, which far outperform all reported aqueous AMBs. In both symmetric cells and full cells, the excellent electrochemical performances are achieved in a noncorrosive, low-cost, and fluorine-free Al2(SO4)3 electrolyte, which is ecofriendly and can be easily adapted for sustainable large-scale applications. This work brings an intriguing picture of the design of metallic anodes for reversible and high-voltage AMBs.

Abstract:Abstract Aqueous aluminum batteries are promising post-lithium battery technologies for large-scale energy storage applications because of the raw materials abundance, low costs, safety and high theoretical capacity. However, their development is hindered by the unsatisfactory electrochemical behaviour of the Al metal electrode due to the presence of an oxide layer and hydrogen side reaction. To circumvent these issues, we report aluminum-copper alloy lamellar heterostructures as anode active materials. These alloys improve the Al-ion electrochemical reversibility (e.g., achieving dendrite-free Al deposition during stripping/plating cycles) by using periodic galvanic couplings of alternating anodic α-aluminum and cathodic intermetallic Al 2 Cu nanometric lamellas. In symmetric cell configuration with a low oxygen concentration (i.e., 0.13 mg L −1 ) aqueous electrolyte solution, the lamella-nanostructured eutectic Al 82 Cu 18 alloy electrode allows Al stripping/plating for 2000 h with an overpotential lower than ±53 mV. When the Al 82 Cu 18 anode is tested in combination with an Al x MnO 2 cathode material, the aqueous full cell delivers specific energy of ~670 Wh kg −1 at 100 mA g −1 and an initial discharge capacity of ~400 mAh g −1 at 500 mA g −1 with a capacity retention of 83% after 400 cycles.

A Dual-Layer Solid Electrolyte Interphase Enhances Interfacial Chemistry Stability in Aqueous Aluminium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Aqueous aluminum metal batteries (AAMBs) have garnered significant attention owing to the abundance of aluminum, high volumetric energy density (8040 mAh cm- 3, approximately four times that of lithium metal anodes), and chemical inertness. However, profound issues such as surface corrosion and the side reaction of hydrogen evolution severely impede the advancement of AAMBs. Here, we report the in-situ formation of a dense inorganic AlF3 + Al/Zn-CO3 + flexible carbon shell solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) on the surface of an Al electrode through hydrothermal and electrochemical activation in a dilute aqueous solution of Al(OTf)3-Zn (NO3)2. Experimental evidence demonstrates that the electrically insulating Al/Zn-NO3 layer initially forms on the Al negative electrode surface through self-polymerization reactions of Al with Zn2+ and NO3 - under sealed heating conditions. Subsequent electrochemical activation leads to the decomposition of CF3SO3- to form conductive AlF3 + Al/Zn-CO3, while in situ generation of a flexible carbon layer occurs internally on the surface. The inorganic inner layer facilitates the diffusion of Al ions, while the organic carbon shell suppresses water permeation and maintains the stability of the SEI structure. The in-situ formed SEI enables the Al//Ti battery to achieve a high Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 98.9 % over 100 cycles. Constructing the Al//beta-MnO2 battery yields a high energy density of 216 Wh kg- 1, with the capacity retention remaining stable at 83.6 % after 700 cycles.

Abstract:Aqueous aluminum-ion batteries present a promising prospect for large-scale energy storage applications, owing to the abundance, inherent safety, and the high theoretical capacity of aluminum. However, their voltage output and energy density are significantly hindered by challenges such as complex hydrogen evolution and uncontrollable solvation reactions. In this work, we demonstrate that water decomposition is restrain by increasing the electron density of water protons and increasing the dissociation energy of H2O through robust dipole interactions with highly polar dimethylformamide (DMF) molecules. Moreover, the incorporation of dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) flame retardant effectively addresses the flammability risk arising from a substantial presence of organic additives The in-depth study with experimental and theoretical simulations reveals that the water-poor solvation structure with reduced water activity is achieved, which can (i) effectively mitigate undesired solvated H2O-mediated side reactions on the Al anode; (ii) boost the de-solvation kinetics of Al3+ while preventing cathode structural distortion; (iii) reduce the flammability of hybrid electrolytes. As a proof of concept, the Al//AlxMnO2 full cell employing a hybrid electrolyte demonstrate enhanced stability (deliver 335 mAh g-1 while retaining 71% capacity for 400 cycles) compared to those with pure electrolyte.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous Zn-metal batteries have attracted widespread attention owing to their safety and low cost beyond Li-metal batteries. However, due to the lack of the solid electrolyte interphase, problems such as dendrites, side reactions and hydrogen generation severely restrict their commercial applications. Herein, a quasi-liquid interphase (QLI) with a “solid–liquid” property is constructed to stabilize the Zn-metal anode. The synergistic effect of solid and liquid behavior ensures the stable existence of QLI and simultaneously enables the interphase dynamic and self-adaptive to the anode evolution. Electrolyte erosion, Zn2+ diffusion and side reactions are inhibited during long-term cycling after introducing QLI, significantly improving the cycling stability and capacity retention of the symmetric and full cells modified with QLI (Zn@QLI), respectively. Constructing an interphase with a quasi-liquid state represents a promising strategy to stabilize the metal anodes in aqueous electrolytes and even extend to organic electrolytes.
Solid Polymer Electrolytes with Enhanced Electrochemical Stability for High‐Capacity Aluminum Batteries

Abstract:This work develops an ionic liquid‐based solid polymer electrolyte with an inorganic additive for aluminum–graphite batteries, showing improved electrochemical stability over conventional ionic liquid electrolytes to enable ≈30% higher specific capacities. The origins of the improved performance are elucidated via variable‐rate cyclic voltammetry and solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, revealing insights into the electrolyte formation process and changes to the electrolyte ion speciation. Chloroaluminate ionic liquids are commonly used electrolytes in rechargeable aluminum batteries due to their ability to reversibly electrodeposit aluminum at room temperature. Progress in aluminum batteries is currently hindered by the limited electrochemical stability, corrosivity, and moisture sensitivity of these ionic liquids. Here, a solid polymer electrolyte based on 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium chloride‐aluminum chloride, polyethylene oxide, and fumed silica is developed, exhibiting increased electrochemical stability over the ionic liquid while maintaining a high ionic conductivity of ≈13 mS cm−1. In aluminum–graphite cells, the solid polymer electrolytes enable charging to 2.8 V, achieving a maximum specific capacity of 194 mA h g−1 at 66 mA g−1. Long‐term cycling at 2.7 V showed a reversible capacity of 123 mA h g−1 at 360 mA g−1 and 98.4% coulombic efficiency after 1000 cycles. Solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy measurements reveal the formation of five‐coordinate aluminum species that crosslink the polymer network to enable a high ionic liquid loading in the solid electrolyte. A stable and high-energy aqueous aluminum based battery

Abstract:Aqueous aluminum ion batteries (AAIBs) have received growing attention because of their low cost, safe operation, eco-friendliness, and high theoretical capacity. However, one of the biggest challenges for AAIBs is the poor reversibility due to the presence of an oxide layer and the hydrogen side reaction. Herein, we develop a strongly hydrolyzed/polymerized aluminum-iron hybrid electrolyte to improve the electrochemical behavior of AAIBs. On the one hand, the designed electrolyte enables aluminum ions interaction/deinteraction on the cathode while stable deposition/stripping of aluminium on the anode. On the other hand, the electrolyte contributes the electrochemical energy storage through iron redox reaction. These two reactions are parallel and coupled through Fe-Al alloy on the anode, thus enhancing the reversibility and energy density of AAIBs. As a result, this hybrid-ion battery delivers a specific volumetric capacity of 35 Ah L -1 at the current density of 1.0 mA cm -2 , and remarkable stability with a capacity retention of 90% over 500 cycles. Furthermore, the hybrid-ion battery achieves a high energy density of approximately 42 Wh L -1 with an average operating voltage of 1.1 V. This green electrolyte for high-energy AAIBs holds promises for large-scale energy storage applications.

Abstract:Aqueous-based Al-ion batteries are attractive alternatives to Li-ion batteries due to their safety, high volumetric energy density, abundance, and recyclability. Although aluminum-ion batteries are attractive, there are major challenges to overcome, which include understanding the nature of the passive layer of aluminum oxide on the aluminum anode, the narrow electrochemical window of aqueous electrolytes, and lack of suitable cathodes. Here, we report using experiments in conjunction with DFT simulations to clarify the role of ionic liquids (ILs) in altering the Al solvation dynamics, which in turn affects the aluminum electrochemistry and aqueous-based battery performance significantly. DFT calculations showed that the addition of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethylsulfonate (EMIMTfO) changes the aluminum solvation structure in the aqueous (Al(TfO)3) electrolyte to lower coordinated solvation shells, thereby influencing and improving Al deposition/stripping on the Zn/Al alloy anode. Furthermore, the addition of an IL reduces the strain in manganese oxide during intercalation/deintercalation, thereby improving the Zn/Al-MnOx battery performance. By optimizing the electrolyte composition, a battery potential of >1.7 V was achieved for the Zn/Al-MnOx system.

Abstract:Abstract The surface chemistry of solid electrolyte interphase is one of the critical factors that govern the cycling life of rechargeable batteries. However, this chemistry is less explored for zinc anodes, owing to their relatively high redox potential and limited choices in electrolyte. Here, we report the observation of a zinc fluoride-rich organic/inorganic hybrid solid electrolyte interphase on zinc anode, based on an acetamide-Zn(TFSI) 2 eutectic electrolyte. A combination of experimental and modeling investigations reveals that the presence of anion-complexing zinc species with markedly lowered decomposition energies contributes to the in situ formation of an interphase. The as-protected anode enables reversible (~100% Coulombic efficiency) and dendrite-free zinc plating/stripping even at high areal capacities (>2.5 mAh cm ‒2 ), endowed by the fast ion migration coupled with high mechanical strength of the protective interphase. With this interphasial design the assembled zinc batteries exhibit excellent cycling stability with negligible capacity loss at both low and high rates.

Abstract:Nonaqueous aluminum-ion batteries are an interesting emerging energy storage technology, offering a plethora of advantages over existing grid energy storage solutions. Carbonaceous and graphitic materials are an appealing cathode material in this system, thanks to their low cost and excellent rate capabilities. The phenomenon of poor Coulombic efficiency in the first cycle, however, is a known issue among some types of carbons, the reasons for which are yet to be fully understood. In this work, we propose that such processes are caused by the formation of a solid–electrolyte interphase, in a similar fashion to graphite anodes in lithium-ion batteries. Using electrospun carbon nanofibers as a model material with tunable crystallinity, the cause of this phenomenon was found to be linked to the presence of surface defects in the cathode material and was further amplified by high surface area. The simple use of a binder polymer, however, helps mitigating the issue by shielding surface defects from direct contact with the electrolyte.

Abstract:Flexible MXene/E‐Al97Ce3 hybrid electrode that is developed by facile and scalable metallurgy and surface processing technologies exhibits exceptionally reversible, stable, and dendrite‐free Al stripping/plating behaviors in aqueous aluminum trifluoromethanesulfonate electrolyte with ultralow oxygen concentration. When coupled with the AlxMnO2‐based cathode, this electrode significantly improves rechargeability and stability of its soft‐package aluminum‐ion battery for potential use in large‐scale energy storage. Aluminum is an attractive anode material in aqueous multivalent‐metal batteries for large‐scale energy storage because of its high Earth abundance, low cost, high theoretic capacity, and safety. However, state‐of‐the‐art aqueous aluminum‐ion batteries based on aluminum anode persistently suffer from poor rechargeability and low coulombic efficiency due to irreversibility of aluminum stripping/plating and dendrite growth. Here eutectic aluminum‐cerium alloys in situ grafted with uniform ultrathin MXene (MXene/E‐Al97Ce3) as flexible, reversible, and dendrite‐free anode materials for rechargeable aqueous aluminum‐ion batteries is reported. As a result of the MXene serving as stable solid electrolyte interphase to inhibit side reactions and the lamella‐nanostructured E‐Al97Ce3 enabling directional Al stripping and deposition by making use of symbiotic α‐Al metal and intermetallic Al11Ce3 lamellas, the MXene/E‐Al97Ce3 hybrid electrodes exhibit reversible and dendrite‐free Al stripping/plating with low voltage polarization of ± 54 mV for ≥1000 h in a low‐oxygen‐concentration aqueous aluminum trifluoromethanesulfonate (Al(OTF)3) electrolyte. These superior electrochemical properties endow soft‐package aluminum‐ion batteries assembled with MXene/E‐Al97Ce3 anode and AlxMnO2 cathode to have high initial discharge capacity of ≈360 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1, and retain ≈85% after 500 cycles, along with the coulombic efficiency of as high as 99.5%.
