Abstract:Low temperature is one of the abiotic factors limiting plant growth and productivity. Yet, knowledge about sex-related responses to low temperature is very limited. In our study, the effects of low, non-freezing temperature on morphological, physiological, and ultrastructural traits of leaves in Populus cathayana Rehd. males and females were investigated. The results showed that 4 °C temperature caused a chilling stress, and females suffered from greater negative effects than did males. At the early growth stage of development, chilling (4 °C) significantly inhibited plant growth, decreased net photosynthesis rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E), and chlorophyll pigments (Chl), and increased intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), chlorophyll a/b (Chl a/b), proline, soluble sugar and H2O2 contents, and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity in both sexes, whereas peroxidase (POD) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities decreased and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) content increased only in females. Chilling stress also caused chloroplast changes and an accumulation of numerous plastoglobules and small vesicles in both sexes. However, disintegrated chloroplasts and numerous tilted grana stacks were only found in chilling-stressed females. Under chilling stress, males showed higher Chl and soluble sugar contents, and higher superoxide dismutase (SOD), POD, and GR activities than did females. In addition, males exhibited a better chloroplast structure and more intact plasma membranes than did females under chilling stress. These results suggest that sexually different responses to chilling are significant and males possess a better self-protection mechanism than do females in P. cathayana.

Abstract:Male and female poplars (Populus cathayana Rehd.) respond differently to environmental stresses. However, little is known about sex-dependent responses to chilling at the proteome level. To better understand these differences, a comparative proteomics investigation combined with a biochemical approach was used in the current study. Three-month-old poplar cuttings were treated at 25 or 4 °C for 14 days. Results revealed significant sexual differences in nitrogen metabolic enzymes and free amino acid components in response to chilling. The chilling-treated males showed higher activities of nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase and higher contents of reduced glutathione, serine, arginine, leucine, glycine, proline and methionine than chilling-treated females. A total of 65 chilling-responsive spots were found, of which 48 showed significant sexual differences. These proteins are involved in photosynthesis, carbon and energy metabolism, metabolic processes of proteins, lipid metabolism, vitamin metabolism, stress defense, and gene expression regulation. The study shows that males have more effective metabolic processes and protective systems to chilling than females.

Abstract:Populus is an effective model for genetic studies in trees. The genus Populus includes dioecious species, and the differences exhibited in males and females have been intensively studied. This review focused on the distinctions between male and female poplar and aspen plants under stress conditions, such as drought, salinity, heavy metals, and nutrient deficiency on morphological, physiological, proteome, and gene expression levels. In most studies, males of Populus species were more adaptive to the majority of the stress conditions and showed less damage, better growth, and higher photosynthetic capacity and antioxidant activity than that of the females. However, in two recent studies, no differences in non-reproductive traits were revealed for male and female trees. This discrepancy of the results could be associated with experimental design: different species and genotypes, stress conditions, types of plant materials, sampling sizes. Knowledge of sex-specific differences is crucial for basic and applied research in Populus species.

Abstract:Drought stress poses adverse influence on plant growth and further alters plant-herbivore interactions. Such effect is enhanced as drought occurrence is reported to increase due to global warming. Although dioecious plant species have shown sex-specific response to drought stress through the changes in growth performance and stress tolerance, whether such changes will drive sex-specific differences in defense against herbivores between male and female plant conspecifics is barely studied. In the current study, female and male poplar full-siblings were submitted to moderate (75 % field water capacity) and severe drought (50 % field water capacity) stresses, followed by herbivore growth and feeding bioassays to test the effect of plant gender on herbivore growth and feeding performance of two specialist and two generalist leaf herbivores. The results showed that although the growth of both plant sexes was inhibited by the two drought levels, male plants performed better than female conspecifics. In the paired-choice bioassays, the specialist herbivores preferred female plants while the generalist herbivores fed more on the male plants without drought stress. Both the moderate and severe drought stresses reversed such preferences. In the triple-choice bioassays, the specialist herbivores preferred female control plants while the generalist herbivores fed more on female plants under severe drought. In addition, the specialist herbivores fed on female plants from severe drought stress grew the worst while the generalist herbivores gained the highest fresh weight. The transcriptomic and metabolomic profiling revealed that female plant leaves contained higher levels of flavonoids than males under control condition while severe drought stress remarkably reduced the levels of defensive metabolites such as flavonoids, isoflavonoids, neoflavonoids and alkaloids in female but not in male plant leaves.

Abstract:Drought is a major abiotic stress, limiting the survival and growth of young plants. However, little is known about sex-dependent responses to drought at the proteome level. In this study, we carried out investigations on comparative proteomics, combined with physiological and organelle structure analyses, in males and females of Populus cathayana Rehd. Three-month-old poplar cuttings were treated at 30% of field capacity and at 100% field capacity as a control in a greenhouse for 40 days. Drought greatly inhibited plant growth, damaged the photosynthetic system and destructed the structures of chloroplasts, mitochondria and cellular membranes. However, males suffered less from the adverse effects of drought than did females. Using 2-DE, 563 spots were detected, of which 64 spots displayed significant drought effect and 44 spots displayed a significant sex by drought interaction effect. The results suggest that the different responses to drought stress detected between the sexes have a close relationship to the changes in the expression of sex-dependent proteins, including, e.g. photosynthesis-related proteins, homeostasis-related proteins and stress response proteins. These proteins could contribute to a physiological advantage under drought, giving potential clues for understanding sexual differences in the performance of plants in different environments.
Drought stress-mediated differences in phyllosphere microbiome and associated pathogen resistance between male and female poplars

Abstract:Phyllosphere-associated microbes play a crucial role in plant-pathogen interactions while their composition and diversity are strongly influenced by drought stress. As dioecious plant species exhibited secondary dimorphism between the two sexes in response to drought stress, whether such difference will lead to sex-specific differences in phyllosphere microbiome and associated pathogen resistance between male and female conspecifics is still unknown. In this study, we subjected female and male full siblings of a dioecious poplar species to a short period of drought treatment followed by artificial infection of a leaf pathogenic fungus. Our results showed that male plants grew better than females with or without drought stress. Female control plants had more leaf lesion area than males after pathogen infection, whereas drought stress reversed such a difference. Further correlation and in vitro toxicity tests suggested that drought-mediated sexual differences in pathogen resistance between the two plant sexes could be attributed to the shifts in structure and function of phyllosphere-associated microbiome rather than the amount of leaf main defensive chemicals contained in plant leaves. Supportively, the microbiome analysis through high-throughput sequencing indicated that female phyllosphere enriched a higher abundance of ecologically beneficial microbes that serve as biological plant protectants, while males harbored abundant phytopathogens under drought-stressed conditions. The results could provide potential implications for the selection of suitable poplar sex to plants in drought or semi-drought habitats.

Abstract:1Previous studies have demonstrated that poplar is sexually dimorphic in its responses to environmental stresses and provided evidence of sex-related differences in protein composition, gene transcription and morphological and physiological processes. However, sexual competition of poplar has not yet been studied. We employed Populus cathayana males and females as a model to investigate intra- and intersexual competition under well-watered condition and drought stress. Our results indicated that competition significantly affected sexual dimorphism of P.cathayana under different watering regimes. Sexual competition was environment-dependent and modified by drought. In females, drought intensified the negative effect of intrasexual competition. Similar resource utilization patterns of females may aggravate pressure for resources under drought stress. Under intersexual competition, females showed a greater competitive ability than males under well-watered condition, while males showed a slight competitive advantage under drought stress. Intersexual competition seems to alleviate the sexual dimorphism of P.cathayana in response to drought stress, as females increase fitness and males decrease fitness compared with intrasexual competition. Sexual dimorphism in resource utilization patterns and niche segregation may contribute to sexual competition in a given environment. Sexual competition was found to affect competitive ability and fitness of both sexes, which may cause spatial segregation of sexes in P.cathyana populations.
Populus Euphratica Males Exhibit Stronger Drought and Salt Stress Resistance Than Females

Abstract:Much attention has been paid on dioecious plants and their responses to environmental stresses. However, little information is available on sexual dimorphism in Populus euphratica Oliver, which usually grows in arid desert areas and exposes to drought and salinity stress. In this study, we investigated female and male seedlings of P. euphratica and their growth and anatomical structure, gas exchange, water and nitrogen use, oxidative stress and antioxidants under drought, salinity, and the combined stress. We found that there were no significant sexual differences in P. euphratica under control conditions (well-watered and no salt addition). However, males showed stronger resistance to drought, salinity and especially to the combined stress, as they had protective structures, higher biomass, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), water and nitrogen use, osmotic adjustment and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging ability, and a lower leaf Cl- content under stress conditions. The significant sex x drought x salinity interactions for biomass, Pn, water and nitrogen use, superoxide radicals (O2-), proline and free amino acids (FAA) indicated that sexual dimorphism occurs depending on the stress gradients, implying contrasting adaptive responses and life strategies in P. euphratica females and males under stress conditions. Due to the sexual dimorphism of P. euphratica under drought and salinity stress, more severe shifts in the sex ratio of P. euphratica forests may occur under future climate change with aggravated aridity and soil salinity.

Abstract:Dioecious plant species represent an important component of terrestrial ecosystems. Yet, little is known about sex-specific responses to drought and elevated temperatures. Populus cathayana Rehd, which is a dioecious, deciduous tree species, widely distributed in the northern, central and southwestern regions of China, was employed as a model species in our study. In closed-top chamber experiments, sex-specific morphological, physiological and biochemical responses of P. cathayana to drought and different elevated temperatures were investigated. Compared with the controls, drought significantly decreased the growth and the net photosynthesis rate (A), and increased the intrinsic water use efficiency (WUE(i)), carbon isotope composition (delta13C), and the malondialdehyde (MDA) and abscisic acid (ABA) contents in droughted plants. In contrast, elevated temperatures significantly promoted the growth and the A, but decreased the WUE(i), delta13C, MDA and ABA contents in well-watered individuals. When compared with males, elevated temperatures induced well-watered females to express a greater increase in the height growth (HG), basal diameter (BD), leaf area (LA), total number of leaves (TNL), dry matter accumulation (DMA) and specific leaf area (SLA), and a lower decrease in the A value, transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (g(s)), MDA and ABA contents, while elevated temperatures induced drought-stressed females to exhibit lower values of HG, BD, LA, TNL, DMA, A, E, g(s) and the intercellular CO2 concentration (C(i)), and higher levels of SLA, WUE(i), delta13C, MDA and ABA contents. Our results indicated that the female individuals of P. cathayana are more responsive and suffer from greater negative effects than do males when grown under environments with increased drought stress and elevated temperature.
Sex-related Responses in Rhizosphere Processes of Dioecious Populus Cathayana Exposed to Drought and Low Phosphorus Stress

Abstract:Extensive research has shown that dioecious plants exhibit sexual dimorphism under extreme environments. However, sex-specific differences in responses to drought, phosphorus (P) shortage or their combination are less known. In our study, impacts of drought, P shortage and their combination on the performance of Populus cathayana males and females were investigated. Drought and P deficiency caused a greater negative impact on female growth than on male growth. P application ameliorated the more negative effect of drought on the shoot dry matter accumulation and P concentration in male leaves, while smaller effects were observed in females. The concentration of citrate in the rhizosphere of males was higher under drought combined with P application than under adequate water availability, and the increase was greater in males than in females. Males also showed a higher abundance of main soil microbial groups, including bacteria, actinomycetes, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and Gram + and Gram- bacteria in the rhizosphere, resulting in a more resistant microhabitat. In contrast, the abundance of bacteria and AMF was less in the rhizosphere of females exposed to stress conditions, while saprophytic fungi increased significantly. P enhanced drought resistance more in stress-resistant males but less in females under relatively severe drought stress. Increased drought resistance by P in males might be associated with greater plasticity in rhizosphere processes when compared with females.

Abstract:Physiological responses to abiotic stress in plants exhibit sexual differences. Females usually experience greater negative effects than males; however, little is known about the molecular mechanisms of sexual differences in abiotic stress responses. In the present study, transcriptional responses to salinity treatments were compared between male and female individuals of the poplar Populus yunnanensis. It was found that several functional groups of genes involved in important pathways were differentially expressed, including photosynthesis-related genes, which were mainly up-regulated in males but down-regulated in females. This gene expression pattern is consistent with physiological observations showing that salinity inhibited photosynthetic capacity more in females than in males. Furthermore, genes located in autosomes rather than in the female-specific region of the W chromosome are the major contributors to the sexual differences in the salinity tolerance of poplars. In conclusion, this study provided molecular evidence of sexual differences in the salinity tolerance of poplars. The identified sex-related genes in salinity tolerance and their functional groups will enhance our understanding of sexual differences in salinity stress at the transcription level.
Streamside trees: responses of male, female and hybrid cottonwoods to flooding

Abstract:Cottonwoods, riparian poplars, are dioecious and prior studies have indicated that female poplars and willows can be more abundant than males in low-elevation zones, which are occasionally flooded. We investigated the response to flooding of clonal saplings of 12 male and 9 female narrowleaf cottonwoods (Populus angustifolia) grown for 15 weeks in a greenhouse, along with three females of a co-occurring native hybrid (Populus × jackii = Populus deltoides × Populus balsamifera). Three water-level treatments were provided, with substrate inundation as the flood treatment. In the non-flooded condition, the hybrids produced about four-fold more dry weight (DW) than the narrowleaf cottonwoods (P < 0.01). In both cottonwood taxa, flooding reduced stem height and DW, root and leaf area and weight, leaf chlorophyll and stomatal conductance (all P < 0.01). Inundation increased the foliar carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (+11%; P < 0.05) but did not significantly alter leaf water potential (mean -1.5 MPa), or foliar δ(13)C, which was lower in P. angustifolia (-32.8‰) than P. × jackii (-31.5‰; P < 0.05). Water level influenced the root distribution as roots were sparse in the saturated substrate and abundant in the capillary fringe above. The male and female P. angustifolia genotypes grew similarly with the favorable water levels, but the males tended to be more inhibited by flooding. Sapling DW of males was reduced by 56% compared with a 44% reduction for females (P = 0.1), and there were similar lower reductions for leaf, stem and root DW in females. These results demonstrate the inundation response of floodplain trees and suggest relative flood tolerance as: P. angustifolia female > P. angustifolia male > P. × jackii female. This indicates that narrowleaf cottonwoods are relatively flood tolerant and suggests that females are more flood tolerant than males. We propose the concept of 'strategic positioning', whereby the seed-producing females could be better adapted to naturally flooded, low-elevation streamside zones where seedling recruitment generally occurs.
Sexually Different Physiological Responses of Populus Cathayana to Nitrogen and Phosphorus Deficiencies.

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that there are significant sexual differences in the morphological and physiological responses of Populus cathayana Rehder under stressful conditions. However, little is known about sex-specific differences in responses to nutrient deficiencies. In this study, the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) deficiencies on the morphological, physiological and chloroplast ultrastructural traits of P. cathayana males and females were investigated. The results showed that N and P deficiencies significantly decreased plant growth, foliar N and P contents, chlorophyll content, photosynthesis, and instantaneous photosynthetic N- and P-use efficiencies (PNUE and PPUE) in both sexes. Males had higher photosynthesis, higher PNUE and PPUE rates, and a lower accumulation of plastoglobules in chloroplasts than did females when exposed to N- and P-deficiency conditions. Nitrogen-deficient males had higher glutamate dehydrogenase and peroxidase activities, and a more intact chloroplast ultrastructure, but less starch accumulation than did N-deficient females. Phosphorus-deficient males had higher nitrate reductase, glutamine synthetase and acid phosphatase activities, but a lower foliar N : P ratio and less PSII damage than did P-deficient females. These results suggest that N and P deficiencies cause greater negative effects on females than on males, and that the different sexes of P. cathayana may employ different strategies to cope with N and P deficiencies.

Abstract:Populus yunnanensis Dode., a native dioecious woody plant species in Southwest China, plays an important role in commercial forestry and environmental protection. In natural habitats, female P. yunnanensis trees are extremely rare while males are dominant in population. Our previous physiological studies in the species have revealed sex-dependent difference in response to drought stress, and females suffer greater negative effects than males. However, the molecular basis of sex-related differences during drought stress has been poorly characterized. We use the Illumina-Solexa platform to sequence the leaf transcriptomes derived from male and female P. yunnanensis trees grown in normal condition and drought stress. In total, 22,235 transcripts were identified in this study and 6039 genes were differentially expressed (DEGs) during drought stress. Majority of the DEGs were identified in males (92%, 5539); thus, males had greater remodeling of the leaf transcriptome in response to drought compared with females. Furthermore, many genes involved in hormone biosynthesis, photosynthesis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging enzyme system had more transcript changes in males than in females during drought stress, while these genes exhibited higher transcript alteration in females than in males in normal condition. Quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis of 15 selected genes suggested that during drought treatment the up-regulated DEGs had a quicker increment in their transcript abundances in females than that in males. The sexual differences of gene transcription coincide with the sexual different adaptation of P. yunnanensis in the present natural habitats.
Growth and defense trade-offs in dioecious Salix myrtillacea exposed to drought and low temperature stress

Abstract:Extensive studies have shown that plants can develop stress memories to improve their tolerance to subsequent abiotic stresses. However, the comprehensive understanding of sex-related stress memory in response to drought, low temperature, and their cross conditions remains an ongoing pursuit. In this study, we investigated plant growth, photosynthetic physiology, and the leaf metabolome in female and male Salix myrtillacea exposed to drought, low temperature, and their cross. Our results underscored the profound detrimental impact of different stresses on growth performance and the photosynthetic apparatus in both sexes. Furthermore, female willows showed greater tolerance to drought, low-temperature and cross-stress, as evidenced by their improved growth performance and higher abundance of amino acids ( e.g ., proline, histidine, glutamine and methionine) and sugar alcohols ( e.g ., melibiose, sorbitol and mannitol). Conversely, male counterparts displayed a richer diversity and abundance of flavonoids in comparison to females. In the key metabolic pathways, flavonoids ( e.g ., syringetin, laricitrin and isoquercitrin) were more abundant under cross-stressed conditions, suggesting that the generation of stress memory significantly enhanced the resistance of male willows at the metabolic level. Taken together, these results suggest that the enhanced resistance of female and male plants is associated with a trade-off between growth and defense. The formation of stress memory in females and males may be associated with greater plasticity in growth performance and accumulation of defensive metabolites, contributing to sex-specific patterns of adversity resistance and niche segregation.

Abstract:We used Populus yunnanensis Dode., a native dioecious species in southwestern China, as a model species to study morphological, physiological, biochemical and ultrastructural responses to drought, salinity and their combination. Females exhibited more growth inhibition, gas exchange rate depression and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation; higher lipid peroxide levels, lower osmotic adjustment capacity and ascorbate-glutathione cycle enzyme activities; and more damage to cell organelles than did males under drought, salinity and especially under their combination. In addition, we found sex-specific responses in total chlorophyll content (TC), carotenoid concentration and carbon isotope composition under different osmotic stresses. Our results indicated that: (1) females are more sensitive and suffer from greater negative effects than do males under drought, salinity and especially under their combination; (2) sexual differences in adaptive responses to drought, salinity and their combination are context dependent; and (3) sex-specific reactions under a combination of stresses are distinct from single-stress responses. Thus, these results provide evidence for adaptive differentiation between sexes in responses to osmotic stresses and in the sensitivity to environmental change.
Different Growth Sensitivity to Enhanced UV-B Radiation Between Male and Female Populus Cathayana.

Abstract:We investigated sex-related morphological and physiological responses to enhanced UV-B radiation in the dioecious species Populus cathayana Rehd. Cuttings were subjected to two UV-B radiation regimes: ambient (4.5 kJ m(-2) day(-1)) and enhanced (12.5 kJ m(-2) day(-1)) biologically effective UV-B radiation for one growing season. Enhanced UV-B radiation was found to significantly decrease the shoot height and basal diameter and to reduce the leaf area, dry matter accumulation, net photosynthesis rate (P(n)), chlorophyll a/b ratio (Chl a/b) and anthocyanin content. Enhanced UV-B radiation also increased chlorophyll pigment, leaf nitrogen, malondialdehyde and abscisic acid (ABA) content, superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities and UV-B-absorbing compounds. No significant effects of enhanced UV-B radiation were found on biomass allocation, gas exchange (except for P(n)), photochemical efficiency of photosystem II or water use efficiency. Moreover, different sensitivity to enhanced UV-B radiation between males and females was detected. Under enhanced UV-B radiation, males exhibited significantly higher basal diameter and leaf nitrogen, and lower Chl a/b, ABA content, UV-B-absorbing compounds, as well as less decrement of leaf area and dry matter accumulation than did females. However, no significant sexual differences in these traits were found under ambient UV-B radiation. Our results suggest that males may possess a greater UV-B resistance than do females, with males having a more efficient antioxidant system and higher anthocyanin content to alleviate UV-B penetration stress than females.

Abstract:Male and female poplars (Populus cathayana Rehd.) respond differently to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) deficiencies. In this study, an iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomic analysis was performed. N and P deficiencies caused 189 and 144 proteins to change in abundance in males and 244 and 464 in females, respectively. Compared to N- and P-deficient males, both N- and P-deficient females showed a wider range of changes in proteins that are involved in amino acid, carbohydrate and protein metabolism, and the sexual differences were significant. When comparing the effects of N- and P-deficiencies, N-deficient females expressed more changes in proteins that are involved in stress responses and gene expression regulation, while P-deficient females showed more changes in proteins that are involved in energy and lipid metabolism, stress responses and gene expression regulation. The quantitative RT-PCR analysis of stress-related proteins showed that males have a better expression correlation between mRNA and protein levels than do females. This study shows that P. cathayana females are more sensitive and have more rapid metabolic mechanisms when responding to N and P deficiencies than do males, and P deficiency has a wider range of effects on females than does N deficiency.

Abstract:We used Populus yunnanensis Dode., a native dioecious species in southwestern China, as a model species to study morphological, physiological, biochemical and ultrastructural responses to drought, salinity and their combination. Females exhibited more growth inhibition, gas exchange rate depression and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation; higher lipid peroxide levels, lower osmotic adjustment capacity and ascorbate-glutathione cycle enzyme activities; and more damage to cell organelles than did males under drought, salinity and especially under their combination. In addition, we found sex-specific responses in total chlorophyll content (TC), carotenoid concentration and carbon isotope composition under different osmotic stresses. Our results indicated that: (1) females are more sensitive and suffer from greater negative effects than do males under drought, salinity and especially under their combination; (2) sexual differences in adaptive responses to drought, salinity and their combination are context dependent; and (3) sex-specific reactions under a combination of stresses are distinct from single-stress responses. Sex‐specific Strategies of Nutrient Resorption Associated with Leaf Economics in Populus Euphratica

Abstract:There are differences between sexes in physiological and functional traits and possibly in nutrient resorption, particularly in nutrient-poor environments. However, little is known about the extent of nutrient resorption from fine stems and fine roots, and about how nutrient resorption is related to leaf economics in the males and females of dioecious trees. We investigated nutrient resorption of different organs and explored whether nutrient resorption is associated with nutrient conservation traits of leaves (e.g. leaf thickness, leaf mass per area, LMA) in Populus euphratica females and males in four natural forests along the Tarim River, China. Both female and male leaves had the highest N resorption efficiency (NRE), than stems and roots. We found sexual dimorphism in leaf nutrient resorption at Shaya, Luntai and Yuli forest sites, where P. euphratica males had higher leaf NRE than females, whereas females had a higher leaf P resorption efficiency (PRE). Moreover, the different nutrient resorption strategies were related to leaf economics. P. euphratica males possess a conservation strategy with a higher leaf thickness, LMA and leaf vein density, which positively correlated with leaf NRE, while females with higher leaf PRE resorbed disproportionately more P for the reproductive investment. Synthesis. Populus euphratica males possess a conservation strategy with higher leaf NRE, while females have higher leaf PRE for the reproductive investment. Due to spatial sexual segregation across environmental gradients, dioecious plants are especially vulnerable under future climate change. The differences in nutrient uptake and utilization strategies between females and males may result in a situation where one sex is more prone to future climate change than the other one. Such sex-specific nutrient resorption strategies are associated with leaf economics. The present study deepens our understanding of the nutrient balance and adaptation strategies of plants under climate change.
