Abstract:Abstract Background Vitamin A can have a positive impact on growth and development of children, but vitamin A deficiency (VAD) was found to be a public health problem in Zhejiang Province, China in 1998. There have been no studies on this topic in Zhejiang Province recently. This study was designed to evaluate the serum retinol levels of children aged 0~4 years in Zhejiang Province, southeast China. This epidemiological data will help design supplementation strategies for vitamin A in high-risk groups and improve their vitamin A status. Methods Children were randomly recruited for this study using a stratified sampling method. A blood sample was collected from each child. Assessment included C-reactive protein (CRP), serum retinol measured with HPLC and a questionnaire completed providing for family information and nutritional status. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the risk factors for VAD in children. Results A group of 357 subjects aged 1 day to 4 years were recruited. The mean plasma retinol concentration was 1.653 (sd 0.47) μmol/L. There were 3.08% (11/357) of children affected with VAD, and 7.28% (26/357) of children had low vitamin A status, but none of the children showed any clinical symptoms of VAD. There was no significant difference in the levels of plasma retinol and the incidence rate of VAD between male and female children. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that living in urban region, having parents with good education and taking vitamin A capsule regularly prevented children from VAD, whereas being young (less than 2 years old) was a risk factor. Conclusion Low vitamin A status remains a nutritional problem in Zhejiang Province. The high-risk group in this study were young, dwelled in rural regions, had parents with poor education and did not take a regular vitamin A containing supplement.

Abstract:Background and objective: Asthma is a heterogeneous respiratory disease characterized by airway hyper-responsiveness and reversible airflow blockage. There is ongoing debate about the impact of vitamin D on asthma. This research is focused on investigating the correlation between serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and asthma. Methods: This cross-sectional study comprised 22,708 eligible participants. Data on asthma and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 were analyzed. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were the main factor, with the presence of asthma as the outcome variable. Weighted logistic regression was utilized to investigate the relationship between serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and asthma, while accounting for factors such as age, gender, race, length of time in US, annual family income, education level, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, and cholesterol. Results: Upon adjusting all variables in model III, epi-25-hydroxyvitamin D3 displayed a negative correlation with current asthma at the lower quartile Q1 (0.784, [0.697 to 0.922]), Q2 (0.841, [0.729 to 0.946]), Q3 (0.396, [0.240 to 0.653]) when compared to the highest quartile Q4 level. However, no significant difference was observed between asthma and 25-hydroxyvitamin D2, as well as 25-hydroxyvitamin D3. Conclusions: In the U.S. population, elevated levels of epi-25-hydroxyvitamin D3 are correlated with an increased risk of developing existing asthma. However, it is important to interpret this finding carefully given the constraints of cross-sectional studies.

Abstract:Background: Currently, there is limited and inconsistent evidence regarding the risk association between daily dietary intake, antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins with Childhood Asthma (CA). Therefore, this study employs Mendelian Randomization (MR) methodology to systematically investigate the causal relationships between daily dietary intake, serum antioxidants, serum minerals, and the circulating levels of serum vitamins with CA. Methods: This study selected factors related to daily dietary intake, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and sugars, as well as serum antioxidant levels (lycopene, uric acid, and β-carotene), minerals (calcium, copper, selenium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, and magnesium), and vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E), using them as Instrumental Variables (IVs). Genetic data related to CA were obtained from the FinnGen and GWAS Catalog databases, with the primary analytical methods being Inverse Variance Weighting (IVW) and sensitivity analysis. Results: Following MR analysis, it is observed that sugar intake (OR: 0.71, 95% CI: 0.55-0.91, P: 0.01) is inversely correlated with the risk of CA, while the intake of serum circulating magnesium levels (OR: 1.63, 95% CI: 1.06-2.53, P: 0.03), fats (OR: 1.44, 95% CI: 1.06-1.95, P: 0.02), and serum vitamin D levels (OR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.04-1.25, P: 0.02) are positively associated with an increased risk of CA. Conclusion: This study identified a causal relationship between the daily dietary intake of sugars and fats, as well as the magnesium and vitamin D levels in serum, and the occurrence of CA. However, further in-depth research is warranted to elucidate the specific mechanisms underlying these associations.

Abstract:Background: Many studies have reported correlations between diet-derived antioxidants and asthma. Nevertheless, the probable association between diet-derived antioxidants and asthma remains a matter of discussion. Objectives: We explored the association between Diet-Derived Antioxidants and Asthma. Methods: We used data from the 2003-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to assess the relationship between diet-derived antioxidants and asthma and a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was employed to assess the causal associations between lifelong diet-derived circulating antioxidant levels and the risk of asthma. Results: Participants with asthma were more likely to be young-to-middle-aged females, smokers, have lower income, belong to non-Hispanic Black ethnicity, have a high school education, have a BMI over 30. The dietary intakes of vitamin C, zinc, selenium, and CDAI were negatively associated with asthma risk (Vitamin C: OR = 0.76, 95 % CI: 0.63-0.91, P = 0.032; Zinc: OR = 0.86, 95 % CI: 0.75-1.00, P = 0.046; Selenium: OR = 0.85, 95 % CI: 0.73-0.98, P = 0.004; CDAI: OR = 0.80, 95 % CI: 0.65-0.97, P = 0.027). There was a significant nonlinear relationship between the dietary intake of vitamin C, zinc, and selenium and the risk of asthma (Pnon-linear < 0.05). However, no causal link between circulating antioxidants and asthma risk was found in the MR analysis. Sensitivity analyses supported the robustness of the results. Conclusion: In the observational study, we identified a negative correlation between the dietary intake of vitamin C, zinc, selenium, and CDAI and asthma risk, while our MR analyses did not find evidence to support a causal relationship between diet-derived antioxidants and the risk of asthma.
The Urinary Metabolites of Volatile Organic Compounds and Asthma in Young Children: NHANES 2011–2018

Abstract:The vast majority of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are of biological origin and do not affect human health, while some VOCs or their oxidation products can damage the respiratory system, nervous system, digestive system and blood system after long-term inhalation by humans. There is limited evidence regarding the association of VOCs exposure with childhood asthma. In this study, we examined the associations between metabolites of VOCs (mVOCs) in urine and childhood asthma. We included a total of 1542 children aged 3–12 years who had information on urinary mVOCs, asthma and essential covariates in the current analyses. After controlling for covariates, we used logistic regression to assess the association between urinary mVOCs and childhood asthma. Then, we examined effect measure modification by child age, gender, race/ethnicity and serum cotinine. 2-Methylhippuric acid (xylene metabolites) (OR: 1.14; 95 % CI: 0.87, 1.59), N-acetyl-S-(benzyl)-l-cysteine (toluene metabolites) (OR: 1.15 95 % CI: 0.76, 1.71), N-acetyl-S-(2-carboxyethyl)-l-cysteine (acrolein metabolites) (OR: 1.09; 95 % CI: 0.61, 1.75), N-acetyl-S-(3-hydroxypropyl)-l-cysteine (acrolein metabolites) (OR: 1.10; 95 % CI: 0.66, 1.80), and N-acetyl-S-(3-hydroxypropyl-1-methyl)-l-cysteine (crotonaldehyde metabolites) (OR: 1.18; 95 % CI: 0.68, 2.01) were weakly associated with the prevalence of asthma in children. Among female children, 2MHA (2-methylhippuric acid) in urine was significantly associated with the prevalence of asthma (OR: 1.81 95 % CI: 1.07, 3.05). At the same time, BMA (N-acetyl-S-(benzyl)-l-cysteine) was significantly associated with the prevalence of asthma in non-Hispanic White (OR:2.09 95 % CI: 0.91, 4.66) and Black (OR:1.90 95 % CI: 0.96, 3.71) children. We found that gender modified the associations between urinary 2MHA and the odds of asthma (interaction term p value = 0.03). Vitamin D Deficiency is Associated with Decreased Lung Function in Chinese Adults with Asthma

Abstract:Background: Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with markers for allergy and asthma severity in children with asthma. However, its association with Chinese adult asthmatics has not been studied. Objective: To examine whether vitamin D status is associated with lung function and total serum IgE in Chinese adults with newly diagnosed asthma. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study including 435 Chinese patients aged >18 years with newly diagnosed asthma. Vitamin D status was assessed by measuring serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentrations. The primary outcomes included airflow limitation, as measured by the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), FEV1 % predicted, and FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC), and serum total IgE concentration. Results: Vitamin D deficiency was prevalent in Chinese adults with asthma, with 88.9% of the subjects having 25OHD <50 nmol/l. Serum 25OHD concentration was positively correlated with FEV1 % predicted (p = 0.02, r = 0.12). After adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, smoking, month of blood collection, and symptom duration, we found significant positive associations between 25OHD concentrations and FEV1 (in liters), FEV1 % predicted, and FEV1/FVC (p for trend < 0.05 for all). The adjusted odds ratios for the highest versus the lowest 25OHD quartile were 0.50 (0.26–0.96) for FEV1 <75% predicted and 0.44 (0.20–0.95) for FEV1/FVC% <0.75. There was no significant association between 25OHD concentrations and total IgE. Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency was highly prevalent in Chinese asthma patients, and vitamin D status was associated with lung function.

Abstract:BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR) are closely related and considered as allergic respiratory diseases (ARD), and their prevalence has recently increased. Data on the association of dietary antioxidant vitamin intake with asthma and AR in adults are limited. The present study aimed to investigate the associations of vitamin A and C intake with asthma, AR, and all cases of both diseases in young adults who participated in a cross-sectional national survey, with the use of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level as an effect modifier.SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study included 6,293 male and female adults aged 20-49 years from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted between 2016 and 2018. The questionnaire-based reports on asthma and AR diagnosis were used to determine outcome variables. Further, 24-h recall data on dietary vitamin A and C, carotene, and retinol intake were acquired. Logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI).RESULTS: Dietary vitamin C intake was inversely associated with asthma prevalence among participants with hs-CRP levels (≥ 1 mg/L); the OR of asthma prevalence was 0.27 (95% CI, 0.08-0.84) for participants with vitamin C consumption ≥ 75 mg/day compared with those consuming < 20 mg/day. Similar association analyses limiting to non-users of dietary supplements were performed to rule out the potential effects of supplement intake on the outcomes; results showed a stronger association. However, the association between vitamin C and asthma was not significant in participants with hs-CRP levels < 1 mg/L; the OR of asthma was 1.44 (95% CI, 0.66-3.16) for participants with vitamin C consumption ≥ 75 mg/day compared with those consuming < 20 mg/day. Vitamin C intake was not associated with AR. Moreover, there was no association between vitamin A intake and neither asthma nor AR.CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that higher vitamin C intake may play a potential role in reducing asthma prevalence. Nevertheless, further studies should be conducted to evaluate whether this association is causal.

Abstract:Objective This study measured the vitamin D levels in patients with allergic asthma and compared the results with the general population.To determine the relationship between serum concentrations of vitamin D and pulmonary function,TIgE,and airway responsivenss,the relationship between TIgE and airway responsivenss.Methods Vitamin D and TIgE levels were assessed in 41 patients with allergic asthma.There was no control group,and the study results were compared with the standard value.At the same time,lung function,airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) were performed.Comparison the correlation of vitamin D and TIgE,pulmonary function and airway responsivenss,the relationship between TIgE and airway responsivenss.Results The prevalence of severe vitamin D3 (23.10± 23.15) deficiency was significantly in patients with allergic asthma than the standard value,vitamin D3level were positive correlated with FEV1 (r =0.428,P ＜0.01).There was no correlation on vitamin D level and TIgE (r =-0.265,P ＞0.01) and negtive correlated with AHR(r =-0.559,P ＜0.01).Here was negtive correlated with TIgE and AHR (r =0.578,P ＜ 0.01).Conclusions Vitamin D deficiency was highly prevalent in asthma patients,and vitamin D status was associated with lung function,AHR.Unlike the childen,there was no correlation on vitamin D level and TIgE in adult.

Abstract:Abstract Background There is growing literature suggesting a link between vitamin D and asthma lung function, but the results from systematic reviews are conflicting. We conducted this meta-analysis to investigate the relation between serum vitamin D and lung function in asthma patients. Methods Major databases, including OVID, MEDLINE, Web of Science and PUBMED, were searched until 10th October 2018. All published observational studies related to vitamin D and asthma were extracted. All meta-analyses were performed using Review Manager 5.3.5. Results This quantitative synthesis found that asthma patients with low vitamin D levels had lower forced expiratory volume In 1 s (FEV1) (mean difference (MD) = − 0.1, 95% CI = − 0.11 to − 0.08, p < 0.01;I2 = 49%, p = 0.12) and FEV1% (MD = − 10.02, 95% CI = − 11 to − 9.04, p < 0.01; I2 = 0%, p = 0.82) than those with sufficient vitamin D levels. A positive relation was found between vitamin D and FEV1 (r = 0.12, 95% CI = 0.04 to 0.2, p = 0.003; I2 = 59%, p = 0.01), FEV1% (r = 0.19, 95% CI = 0.13 to 0.26, p < 0.001; I2 = 42%, p = 0.11), forced vital capacity (FVC) (r = 0.17, 95% CI = 0.00 to 0.34, p = 0.05; I2 = 60%, p = 0.04), FEV1/FVC (r = 0.4, 95% CI = 0.3 to 0.51, p < 0.001; I2 = 48%, p = 0.07), and the asthma control test (ACT) (r = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.2 to 0.47, p < 0.001; I2 = 0%, p = 0.7). Subgroup analysis indicated that the positive correlation between vitamin D and lung function remained significant in both children and adults. Conclusions Our meta-analysis suggested that serum vitamin D levels may be positively correlated with lung function in asthma patients. Future comprehensive studies are required to confirm these relations and to elucidate potential mechanisms.

Abstract:Background Asthma, characterized by recurrent wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing, is a major health concern among children and adolescents worldwide, currently affecting more than 5 million children. The increasing prevalence of obesity and overweight among the pediatric population has made the issue of childhood respiratory health more complex. Compared with children of healthy weight, the risk of asthma is higher in overweight and obese children. Zinc, a nutrient that regulates the oxidant-antioxidant balance, has been studied for its potential protective effects against asthma in adults and children. However, the results are controversial, with some studies reporting a beneficial effect and others showing no effect. Therefore, our objective was to assess the correlation between zinc intake from diet and asthma occurrence among children and adolescents who are overweight or obese. Methods The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2011–2020) provided data on individuals aged ≤20 who were overweight or obese, had asthma, and consumed zinc in their diet. The association between dietary zinc and asthma was evaluated using a variety of statistical methods, including multivariate logistic regression, restricted cubic spline analysis, and subgroup analysis. Results A total of 4597 pediatrics and adolescents were enrolled, with 20.9% (963/4597) suffering from asthma. After adjusting for all covariates in the multivariate logistic regression, compared with the lowest zinc intake group Q1(≤5.68 mg/day), the adjusted OR values for zinc intake and asthma in Q2 (5.69–8.36 mg/day), Q3 (8.37–11.95 mg/day), and Q4 (≥11.96 mg/day) were 0.78 (95% CI: 0.62–0.98, p = 0.03), 0.76 (95% CI: 0.6∼0.98, p = 0.032), 0.71 (95% CI: 0.53∼0.95, p = 0.022), respectively. Stratified analysis showed no interactive role for dietary zinc intake and asthma in overweight or obese children and adolescents. Conclusions Dietary zinc intake is inversely associated with asthma in overweight or obese children and adolescents.

Abstract:The association between composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and asthma remains unclear. Our study aimed to investigate the association of CDAI with asthma in children aged 3-18 years in the United States. Cross-sectional analyses were carried out on 18,118 children aged 3-18 years old. Data was obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2003 and 2020. The Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) was measured by assessing the consumption of six dietary antioxidants (vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, selenium and carotenoids). The association between CDAI and asthma was explored using multivariate weighted logistic regression, subgroup analyses, and sensitivity analyses. Among the 18,118 participants, 2045 (11.3%) reported a diagnosis of asthma by a healthcare provider. In both the crude and adjusted models, the odds ratios (ORs) for asthma with CDAI were not significant. Specifically, in the fully adjusted model, the OR for T2 was 0.98 (95% CI 0.83, 1.17) and the OR for T3 was 1.00 (95% CI 0.76, 1.31). Subgroup analyses by sex, age and BMI category also showed no significant associations. Sensitivity analyses, including weighted logistic multivariate analyses adjusting for family history of asthma, confirmed the absence of a significant association between CDAI and asthma. Our study showed no significant association between CDAI and asthma in children and adolescents.

Abstract:Abstract Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by airway inflammation and hyperreactivity. Prevalence has continued to rise in recent decades as Western dietary patterns have become more pervasive. Evidence suggests that diets emphasizing the consumption of plant-based foods might protect against asthma development and improve asthma symptoms through their effects on systemic inflammation, oxidation, and microbial composition. Additionally, increased fruit and vegetable intake, reduced animal product consumption, and weight management might mediate cytokine release, free radical damage, and immune responses involved in the development and course of asthma. The specific aim of this review paper is to examine the current literature on the associations between dietary factors and asthma risk and control in children and adults. Clinical trials examining the mechanism(s) by which dietary factors influence asthma outcomes are necessary to identify the potential use of nutritional therapy in the prevention and management of asthma.

Abstract:Allergic asthma is a complex lung disease characterized by breathlessness, airway inflammation, and obstruction. Allergy and allergic rhinitis (AR) are the main triggers of asthma. Vitamin A is an important supplementary factor for the physiological activation of the immune system. In the present study, we investigated the effects of vitamin A on the exacerbation of allergic asthma symptoms. BALB/c mice were allocated to four groups. Asthma was created in two groups, and in the other two groups, rhinitis was induced. One of the asthma groups and one of the rhinitis groups orally received vitamin A (20 IU/g for 15 days). The levels of Immunoglobulin (Ig) E, histamine, leukotriene B4 (LTB4), Cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (Cys-LT), interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, IL-13, and IL-35 as well as eosinophil peroxidase activity, were measured. Also, the histopathology of mice lungs was evaluated. The levels of total IgE, LTB4, Cys-LT, IL-4, IL-5, IL-17, and IL-33, eosinophil peroxidase activity, perivascular and peribronchial inflammation significantly decreased in vitamin A-treated asthma and rhinitis groups compared to non-treated groups. Also, IL-13 and histamine levels, hyperplasia of the goblet cell, and hyper-secretion of the mucus insignificantly decreased in vitamin A-treated asthma and rhinitis groups. Asthma and AR are common diseases that are generally developed due to the dysregulation of the immune system. Vitamin A plays an important role in controlling the immunopathologic mechanisms of allergic diseases. Vitamin A could be a useful supplement in managing AR and asthma by decreasing the severity of inflammatory responses. Therefore, control of vitamin A deficiency is recommended in Allergy.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Asthma is a major public health concern due to its persistent inflammation of the airways. The intricate and widely variable epidemiology of asthma among nations and populations is a result of the interplay between genetic, environmental, and socioeconomic factors. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate whether VitD supplementation can reduce the frequency of exacerbations (including the frequency of exacerbations requiring systemic corticosteroids and the frequency of exacerbations necessitating trips to the hospital or emergency room, or both) and improve pulmonary function (clinical indicators such as the FEV1% predicted value). METHODS: Computers were used to search Pubmed, Medline, ISI Web of Science, Embase, Cachrane Library, CNKI, CBM, VIP, and the Wanfang Database. Asthma/asthma, VitD/VitD, lung function/lung function, retrieval time is from database setup to October 8, 2021, to search all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effect of VitD on human asthma and to retroactively incorporate references to literature were all included in the search criteria. After rigorous screening, quality evaluation, and data extraction of the included literature by two reviewers independently, heterogeneity tests and sensitivity analyses were performed. RESULTS: The findings show that a total of 12 relevant studies meeting the inclusion criteria were finally included, including 649 cases in the experimental group and 646 cases in the control group. VitD intervention reduced the number of asthma exacerbations, including the rate of exacerbations requiring systemic corticosteroid therapy and the rate of acute exacerbations requiring emergency department or hospital visits or both. CONCLUSIONS: In the outcome of lung function (FEV1% predicted value), it was shown that VitD supplementation improved lung function; in the outcome of serum 25-hydroxyVitD levels, it was shown that VitD supplementation increased serum 25-hydroxyVitD levels.

Abstract:Background Asthma is an inflammatory disease. The potential of n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) to alleviate asthma symptoms through their anti‐inflammatory effects and immune modulation has been explored. However, the precise role of dietary n‐3 PUFAs in childhood and adolescent asthma remains unclear. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the association between dietary n‐3 PUFAs intake and asthma in children and adolescents in the United States. Methods We conducted a cross‐sectional analysis of 8543 children and adolescents from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2013 and 2020 by adjusting for covariates and using multivariate logistic regression, restricted cubic spline, threshold effects, and subgroup analyses. Results Among 8354 participants, 1456 (16.5%) self‐reported diagnosis of asthma by a healthcare provider. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, compared with individuals in the lowest n‐3 PUFA consumption group (T1, <26.07 mg/kg/day), the adjusted odds ratio (OR) for asthma was 0.71 (95% CI: 0.6–0.84, p 48.93 mg/kg/day). Furthermore, a nonlinear (L‐shaped) relationship was observed between n‐3 PUFA intake and asthma (p = .009), with subgroup and sensitivity analyses confirming the stability of the results.
