He specialises in geomorphology. He is mainly interested in natural hazards and natural resources in an urban environment. He regularly works with palaeo-environmentalists on Lyon's archaeological sites.André-Marie Dendievel is a scientist at the National Graduate School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Lyon (ENTPE). After a master's degree in geoarchaeology (Univ. Burgundy,Dijon,FR) and a doctoral thesis in palaeoecology (Univ. Lyon-St-Etienne,FR / Univ. Innsbruck,AUS),he also analysed temporal trends in persistent organic pollutants and metals in sediments along rivers. He combines these skills by investigating biodiversity changes in wetland ecosystems over time,under anthropogenic constraints.Dr. Jacqueline Argant,palynologist,has long collaborated with numerous specialists in various fields: archaeology (prehistory,protohistory and history),paleontology and geography,carrying out pollen studies for them on a wide range of materials from the Plio-Pleistocene to the present day. For the past 25 years,she has been working with a multidisciplinary team on the study of peatlands in the eastern Massif Central. Among others,she specialises in the palynological analysis of coprolites of various ages and origins (hyenas,canids and mammoths) and of the latrines in Délos Island (Greece) and currently those of Ostia (Italia).Cédric Audibert is in charge of the life sciences collections at the Musée des Confluences (Lyon,FR). He specialises in entomology and malacology. He has authored numerous articles and books related to systematics,biogeography and the history of science.Laurent Bouby,a biologist with a doctorate in archaeology,is a CNRS research engineer at the Montpellier Institute of Evolutionary Sciences and a specialist in the study of archaeological seeds and fruits. His research focuses on the history of agriculture and food in the western Mediterranean since the Neolithic period and on the domestication and spread of grapevine.Claire Delhon is an archaeobotanist and palaeoenvironmentalist in the CEPAM – CNRS in Nice (Cultures et Environnements,Préhistoire,Antiquité,Moyen Âge),with a particular interest in the relationship between agro-pastoral societies and their environment. She analyses charcoal and phytoliths,mainly in the Mediterranean and Alpine regions,in order to understand how human activities have shaped landscapes since the beginning of the Neolithic period.Philippe Dessaint has been an archaeologist in the Service archéologique de la Ville de Lyon since 2006. He managed several excavations in urban contexts and specialises in the spatial processing of archaeological data.Yanni Gunnell is a Professor of Physical Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Lyon,France. He studies the archives of environmental change and the timescales of continental denudation and material transfer across continental landscapes. His multidisciplinary focus on geochronology and landscape evolution scenarios adopts a comparative approach,which ranges from cratonic environments to mountain belts and covers different climatic settings.Céline Maicher is currently in a postdoctoral position attached to the lab Chrono-environment,Besançon. PhD in paleoparasitology,her work seeks to highlight ancient traces of parasites,in order to better understand waste management and eating habits in an archaeological context.Matthieu Le Bailly is a Professor of Ecology and Paleoecology at the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon. A specialist in paleoparasitology,he is interested in the presence and relative importance of digestive parasites over time,and their impact on ancient societies.Michèle Monin is an archeologist specialist in Roman antiquity. She worked at the Service archéologique de la Ville de Lyon for 35 years until 2022. She managed excavations,especially urban archaeology.

Abstract:This study shows how fine and organic sediments in urban contexts can document landscape changes, anthropogenic activities and depositional processes. We focus on the transition between the late Iron Age and the Roman period in the city of Lyon (France), where an archaeological excavation conducted on Fourvière Hill aimed at understanding the evolution of a defensive site located south-west of the former Roman city. The discovery of a Gallic wall made of earth, wood and stone (murus gallicus) probably indicates the oppidum status of Lyon before the Roman colonisation. Fine-textured, organic and hydromorphic sediments containing a variety of artefacts (fine wares and amphora fragments) and abundant palaeoecological indicators (seeds, fruits, wood and charcoal fragments, pollen, shells, and parasites), were preserved at the foot of the rampart. A multidisciplinary study of these remains reveals the presence of a former hilltop pond surrounded by riparian woodlands with multi-proxy evidence of arable land or gardens, discharge from human settlements (consumption wastes, human parasites), and grazed areas (faecal inputs, animal parasites and plants tolerant to trampling). After several episodes of sediment inputs and backfill, the palaeoenvironmental record ended at the beginning of the Roman Empire, when a defensive wall was built over the site.
