Abstract:A primary effort within the literature addresses the needs in acclimatizing dynamic, student-driven instruction to conceive a significantly enhanced online learning environment. This study serves to examine the relationship, if any, between student characteristics (introversion and extraversion) and contribution in the online writing environment (social presence) and their sense of class community in online writing courses. The research was undertaken in a public university in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), examining a sample (N = 171, 36 males and 135 females) of EFL male and female students. The results confirmed the ICT positive relationships between extraverted and introverted students with their social presence and sense of class community. These results reinforce the instructor's significant role in implementing and engaging students in learning experiences that can address the need for different types of students (e.g., extraverts, introverts) and enhance their interaction through online platforms. The study further calls for developing pedagogically sound approaches to shift away from instructor-fed to student-centered online learning that incorporates instructors' facilitation, constructive and continuous feedback, and clear guidance. It further urges the utilization of sociopsychological methods to address individual differences, especially in online learning.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to determine teachers' opinions regarding the impact of competitive education approach - practices - on students' social and emotional development. Qualitative method was preferred in the research study and interview technique was used. Criterion sampling, one of the purposeful sampling methods, was used when determining the participants. The participants consist of 20 teachers who work in Sincan district of Ankara province in the 2022-2023 academic year, vary in terms of demographic characteristics, teach 12th grade students, and have worked for at least 5 years. In this study, a semi-structured interview form was created as a data collection tool to examine the social and emotional development of students in competitive education in terms of teachers' opinions, and was applied remotely via Google form. The answers given to the interview form in the study were analyzed with the content analysis method used in qualitative studies. The findings were coded and interpreted by creating themes. The classroom guidance program of the Ministry of National Education includes competencies in three development areas of students: academic, career and social and emotional. Social and emotional development area; It consists of ensuring personal safety, self-awareness, interpersonal skills, understanding and managing emotions, and decision-making competencies. As a result of our study, in which we discussed the effect of the competitive education approach, which is the purpose of our research, on the social and emotional development of students in the context of the social and emotional development competencies of the 12th grade guidance program, it can be said that the competitive education approach is insufficient to realize the social and emotional development of students at the desired level. While protecting personal security, self-awareness, interpersonal relations and decision-making skills show development in the social field, understanding and managing emotions show emotional development. At the end of the research, comparative practices that support emotional development can be determined by universities, and it can be recommended to provide consultancy services to the Ministry of Education and schools, to support the social development of students by school-family cooperation for each student, and to be supported by school administrators. Abstract:In this study, it is aimed at determining the effects of communication skills levels of health professionals on Self-Disclosure and Feedback levels and whether the sociodemographic characteristics of individuals change according to their communication skills. In this context, the study conducted on 463 sampled, the level of communication skills of physicians, nurses and administrators differ according to various variables. According to the results obtained, the communication skills of the individuals participating in the research communication skills differed according to age, gender, educational status, professional status, administrator status and working time. When the level of communication skills of individuals is examined on the level of Self-Disclosure and Feedback levels, Self-Disclosure was found to be affected by the dimensions of the communication skills Social Behaviour Competence (SBC), Harmony Competence (HC), Human Relations (HR), Feedback was found to be affected by the dimensions of the communication skills Social Behaviour (SBC), Individual Aspect in Communication (IAC), Sensitivity Competence (SC), Encouragement to Communicate Competence (ECC) and Human Relationship (HR).
Geriatric competency and attitudes toward older adults among Turkish undergraduate social work students

Abstract:The need for social workers educated about aging and eager to work with older adults will increase significantly as the older adult population rises rapidly. It is essential to determine the attitudes and competencies of social workers prepared to work in this field. This study aimed to evaluate Turkish undergraduate social work students' attitudes toward older adults and their geriatric social work competency. A cross-sectional descriptive correlational research design was used in the study. The study included 308 fourth-year undergraduate students attending a social work program. Participants were selected by convenience sampling. The results indicated that students had slightly positive attitudes toward older people. As for the geriatric competency, the students rated highest in applying "values, ethics, and theoretical perspectives" and lowest in the "aging services, programs, and policies." Geriatric social work competence was strongly associated with positive attitudes toward older adults. These findings indicate the need to implement new learning opportunities early in academic programs to improve social work students' attitudes toward older adults and increase their knowledge and skills to address the aging population's needs.

Abstract:This research examines classroom methodologies aligned with the communicative approach, gauging the perspectives of English teachers working within vocational high schools (VHSs). The study, employing a qualitative case study research design, engaged 10 teachers from diverse backgrounds. The participants volunteered for the study and were selected through a maximum diversity sampling technique, a purposeful sampling method. The research methodology encompassed data collection through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Content analysis was applied to scrutinize interview data, whereas observational and document‐based findings were subjected to descriptive analysis techniques. The study revealed a prevalent utilization of teacher‐controlled activities and a predominant teacher‐centric classroom layout among teachers. Notably, a considerable proportion of in‐class time was allocated to grammar instruction, whereas comparatively lesser emphasis was placed on fostering reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills. Moreover, it was found that multiple‐choice tests and alternative assessment formats such as performance evaluations and projects were exclusively employed; using other alternative assessment approaches like observations, interviews, learning diaries, and portfolios was rare. It is also found that English instruction in VHSs heavily relies on textbooks, supplemented by the occasional integration of audiovisual materials. Overall, teachers expressed a consensus that there exists a need for enhancement in curricular frameworks, teaching aids, as well as assessment and evaluation tools within the English instruction domain.

The power of virtual connections: A randomized controlled trial of online positive psychotherapy training on effective communication skills of nursing students

Abstract:Aim: This research aimed to assess the impact of the online "Positive Psychotherapy- Based Key Model of Courtesy and Integrity" (KMCI)" program on the effective communication skills of nursing students. Background: With the growing integration of virtual platforms in psychotherapy education, there is a burgeoning interest in understanding their influence on nursing student's communication abilities. Recognizing how online positive psychotherapy education shapes these skills is pivotal for enriching nursing education and practice. Design: The study adopted a pre-test-post-test randomized controlled design and involved 64 undergraduate nursing students from a state university's nursing department during the 2021-2022 academic year, all enrolled in psychiatric nursing courses. Methods: Students were divided into experimental and control groups through simple randomization. Pre-tests, encompassing a "Personal Information Form" and an "Effective Communication Skills Scale," were administered to both groups. Subsequently, the experimental group received the "Positive Psychotherapy- Based Key Model of Courtesy and Integrity" program online for five weeks, while no intervention was provided to the control group during this period. Post-tests were then conducted for both groups after five weeks. Results: The findings revealed a significant increase (p<0.05) in the total scores of sub-dimensions, including "Ego-Enhancing Language, Active Listening, Self-Disclosure and Recognition, Empathy and Self-Language Scale" in the experimental group in both intra-group and inter-group comparisons. Conclusion: In conclusion, the "Positive Psychotherapy- Based Key Model of Courtesy and Integrity" program effectively enhances practical communication skills among nursing students. Equipping students with the ability to integrate courtesy and integrity isn't effective.
Personal responsibility and interpersonal communication in a project-based learning environment

Abstract:A common refrain is that today’s youth lack empathy and are concerned mainly with their own well-being. Freshman university students, especially those involved with project-based courses, have been singled out for this behavior. Students, once put on teams, may be expected to acquire the essential interpersonal skills. However, the interplay between personal responsibility and interpersonal communication is complex. This study investigated 143 freshman students’ responsibility and interpersonal communication propensities in the UAE. Data were collected using two questionnaires. Results indicate that the students’ responsibility and interpersonal communication scores were at a moderate level, while the responsibility scores of students in the second level course were higher. However, the students in the first level course had a slightly higher interpersonal communication. Female students’ interpersonal communication scores were more varied than male students’. A weak positive correlation appeared between responsibility and interpersonal communication scores. Results are discussed, and recommendations are made as to how to increase students’ responsibility behaviors in courses that require the effective use of interpersonal communication skills.

Abstract:This Full Paper in the Research-To-Practice Category presents a long-term study about the effects of a student-centered course on communication and professional skills on students' thoughts, attitudes, and behavior. The course is offered at a European university as part of a computer science master's program. This paper shares the design and challenges of a longitudinal study that reaches ten years behind and employs a mixed-methods approach. Besides presenting and interpreting the findings, we shed light on which features tend to stay on students' minds and impact their way of being and acting in society. Moreover, we suggest implications for the design and practice in comparable courses to maximize constructive, sustainable effects, such as improved active listening, presentation skills, and openness to other perspectives. These are essential (not only) for computer science professionals. Our findings suggest that the course provided significant learning for the vast majority of respondents, including aspects such as presenting while keeping the other side in mind, managing one's stress, and becoming less shy to speak up. All in all, we aim to contribute an evidence-based source of motivation for instructors in technically focused curricula who hold a student-centered stance.
Examining the Effect of Peer and Self Assessment Practices on Writing Skills

Abstract:This study aims to reveal how peer- and self-assessment practices influence the writing skills of 9th grade students. The study adopted mixed-methods explanatory design. The participants were 102 students attending a public school in Ankara. The quantitative data were collected through a quasi-experimental method, and qualitative data were collected through a case study. There were three groups of participants in this study: the 1st experimental group in which peer-assessment was carried out with 34 participants; the 2nd experimental group in which self-assessment was conducted with 34 students, and 34 students in the control group. The interventions lasted 7 weeks. Writing performance tasks and rubrics were used to gather quantitative data while a Semi-Structured Interview Form was used to collect the qualitative data. For the analysis, paired samples t-test, ANOVA, and content analysis were used. The findings revealed that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores of experimental groups in which peer and self-assessments were conducted whereas there was not a significant difference between the scores of the control group. The findings of ANOVA, the post-test results of the experimental and control groups showed that there was a significant difference between all groups in favor of the 1st experimental group in which peer assessment was applied. The qualitative findings of the study corroborate the quantitative findings. Hence, we can conclude that peer and self-assessment practices were effective both in the development of students' writing skills and on their attitudes and interests towards writing.
An Investigation of Potential Leadership and Innovation Skills of University Students

Abstract:The leadership characteristics and innovation skills of university students are of great importance in order to increase the quality of education in universities and to ensure academic development, change and renewal. This study aimed to investigate the potential leadership and innovation skills of university students with a correlational approach. Therefore, the leadership characteristics and innovation skills of university students were examined based on the variables of gender, year of study and academic career expectations through a descriptive survey design. The participants of this study consist of 343 students studying at 2 state universities in Konya. Personal information form, potential leadership scale and innovation scale were used to collect data. The results of the research showed that there were significant differences in terms of potential leadership characteristics and innovation skills of university students by gender, year of study and academic career expectations. In addition, the potential leadership characteristics of the participants significantly predicted their innovation skills.
Investigation of Communication, Social Intelligence and Intercultural Sensitivity Competencies of Teacher Candidates in Sustainable Education by Structural Equation Modeling

Abstract:It has become increasingly important to provide equal educational opportunities to all students for quality and sustainable education in classrooms with rapidly increasing diversity. In this context, communication skills, social intelligence and intercultural sensitivity are important competences that can affect teacher performance and efficiency in classrooms. Despite the importance of these competencies, empirical studies examining the relationships between these variables are scarce. Consequently, this study aimed to investigate the relationships between teacher candidates' communication skills and their intercultural sensitivity and social intelligence levels through the application of structural equation modeling (SEM). The participants were selected from among the teacher candidates studying at Kütahya Dumlupınar University, a public university in Türkiye, using simple random sampling method. The results indicated that teacher candidates had high levels of communication skills, intercultural sensitivity and social intelligence. In addition, while there was a significant positive relationship between communication skills and intercultural sensitivity level and social intelligence level at low level, there was a significant positive relationship between intercultural sensitivity and social intelligence level at medium level. Furthermore, communication skills and intercultural sensitivity were found to be significant predictors of social intelligence and intercultural sensitivity had a partial mediating role in the relationship between communication skills and social intelligence. In the study, it was concluded that teacher candidates' communication skills predicted social intelligence through intercultural sensitivity.

An Action Research on Improving Classroom Communication and Interaction in Social Studies Teaching

Abstract:The aim of this research is to reveal how communication and interaction in classrooms can be enhanced with the communicative approach education provided for social studies teachers. The participants of this research were five social studies teachers working at secondary schools and their 7th grade students, N = 110. The data collection tools adopted in this research were video and audio recordings, documents, semistructured interview forms, and stimulated recall interview forms. The data obtained from recordings of lessons were analyzed using the communicative approach, and the data obtained from document review and interview were analyzed using the content analysis method. The results of the study show that social studies curriculum contains items that require both dialogical and authoritative discourses and that the course books are prepared accordingly, but teachers as the practitioners of the program do not conduct their lessons accordingly. Instead, all the teachers participating in the research used only authoritative (interactive/noninteractive) approaches and they did not include dialogical (interactive/noninteractive) approaches at all. This situation, which is seen as a problem in terms of conducting successful in-class communication and interaction, has been solved in three action cycles with one of the teachers. The teacher who used only authoritative (interactive/noninteractive) approaches in her lessons prior to the trainings started to include dialogical (interactive/noninteractive) approaches too. It was also observed that the teacher’s impression of the lessons carried out by adopting the communicative approach model was positive. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the communicative approach model is applicable in the social studies course. It can be said that the trainings given to the teachers created awareness about the use of the communicative approach model in classroom communication and interaction and provided benefits in diversifying discourse styles.
The correlation of communication skills and emotional expressions among nursing students in Turkey: A public university sample

Abstract:Background & Aim: Expressing emotions is very important both in interpersonal relationships and in the protection and maintenance of the individual's mental health. However, the individual must have certain skills to express his feelings healthily. The most important of these is communication skills. This research aimed to examine the correlation between communication skills and emotional expressions of nursing students. Methods & Materials: This correlational study was conducted among nursing students at a public university faculty of nursing in Turkey between 2016 and 2017. Of the total of 1423 students, 632 nursing students were selected using the convenience sampling method. The Introductory Information Form, the Berkeley Expressivity Questionnaire, and the Communication Skills Scale were used to collect data. The Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H, and Pearson correlation tests were used for the analysis of the data. Results: The mean total Berkeley Expressivity Questionnaire score of the students was found to be 79.45±10.11, and the mean total score of the Communication Skills Scale was 97.67±11.20. Emotional expressions are affected by gender, marital status, class, income level, family structure, the residence where they have lived the longest, place of residence, and working status (p≤0.05, p<0.01). It was found that there was a positive-directed correlation between students' emotional expressions and communication skills (p<0.01). Conclusion: It was concluded that communication skills and some sociodemographic characteristics of nursing students are correlated with their emotional expressions.
A Comprehensive Study on University Students’ Perceived Employability: Comparative Effects of Personal and Contextual Factors

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the personal and contextual determinants affecting the employability perception of university students using a comprehensive model, and to compare the effects of these determinants with each other. The sample consisted of 463 university students from Turkish universities in İstanbul. Following explanatory and confirmatory analyses, the study variables were tested via hierarchical regression analysis. Across all variables, generic skills, academic performance, personal circumstances, and external labor market had significant and positive effects on the perception of employability, while students’ work experience and the contribution of university and consultants did not. The external labor market was identified as the strongest determinant of employability, and contextual factors were identified as having a stronger influence than personal ones. The results present a number of suggestions for stakeholders—including the Ministry of Education, university administrations, teaching staff, employers, students, families, media, and graduates—vis-à-vis perceived employability.

Abstract:Communication skills, such as listening, open-mindedness, empathy, and confidence, are essential for personal and professional development and play a significant role in many disciplines, including education, health, and business. Social media, a widely used communication channel, has revolutionized how people interact, and its effects on education and overall social development are significant. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of communication skills possessed by university students and to determine whether these levels are affected by the social media applications that the students use. In this study, there were 407 participants in the sample, with 55.8% (227) female and 44.2% (180) male. Communication skills scale was used to assess the students’ communication skills. Exploratory statistics (mean and standard deviation) were used to determine the participants’ communication skill levels. Bayesian statistics were used to determine how well the data supported the differentiation of communication skill levels based on independent variables. The study revealed that most college students possessed moderate communication skills and disclosed disparities between academic departments, underscoring the need to assess curricula and teaching methods. It also suggested that most social media platforms have little effect on communication skills, with some gender differences observed, emphasizing the significance of addressing these differences to enhance the development of communication skills.
Reflective writing and the self-perceived development of intrapersonal communication skills among first-year university students in the UAE

Abstract:Intrapersonal communication (IC) is inescapable; we constantly engage in self-talk. IC is surprisingly under-researched, but its quality affects students' reflective skills, impacting their academic success. This implies that students' IC skills need to be developed systematically. Our small-scale qualitative study explores first-year university students' self-perceived development of IC skills in the context of a communication course that supported intensive reflective writing experience, with data collected through reflective essays. Results suggest that the students' reflective writing experience impacted their self-perceived IC skills by enhancing analytical and problem-solving processes, self-awareness, positive thinking, and self-esteem, and also supported interpersonal communication skills' development. Introducing first-year university students to reflective writing would therefore seem to be beneficial. However, to generate positive experiences, reflective writing needs to be scaffolded carefully.
Life Experiences of Young People Who Are Neither In Education or Employment: A Qualitative Research

Abstract:Problem The fact that the young population, which represents the most active and productive segment of the country, is far from working life directly affects the future of the country. Purpose: To deeply examine the life experiences of young adults who are not included in education and working life, to reveal the difficulties they face and what needs to be done to participate in education and working life. Method: This study is a qualitative research and in-depth interviews were conducted with the participants and thematic content analysis was used in its analysis. 41 volunteer young adults determined by the snowball sampling method participated in the research. Findings: Our research findings revealed that the young adults who participated in the research could not continue their education, had a lack of experience, and felt bad and incomplete. Among the findings, it was highlighted that young adults attended vocational courses and looked for jobs in order to ensure their personal development. Conclusion It has been revealed that current programs aimed at the participation of young adults in education and working life should be improved and that the financial support that young people need in this process should be provided by state institutions. Originality/Value: This study makes an extremely important contribution to the literature in terms of making the life experiences of young people who are not included in education and working life visible. Evaluation of Social Intelligence and Communication Skills Levels in terms of Music Education

Abstract:This study aims to determine high school students’ social intelligence and communication skills and the effect of music education on these variables. A survey method was used in the study. Two data collection tools were used in the study. These are Tromso Social Intelligence Scale developed by Silvera et al. (2001), adapted into Turkish by Doğan and Çetin (2009), and Communication Skills Scale created by Korkut Owen and Bugay (2014). The study group consists of students in five high schools in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, in the 2021-2022 academic year. The data collection process was completed in two months (April-May). The study shows that high school students have good social intelligence and communication skills. The scores obtained do not differ according to gender and grade level variables. At the same time, a positive and significant relationship was found between social intelligence and communication skills scores. The scores of the group that received extra music education outside the school were compared with those that did not. According to these results, the social intelligence and communication skills scores of the group that received music education were higher. While this difference was not significant in the case of social intelligence, it was significant in the case of communication skills.

Abstract:Background: In Iraq, adolescents confront challenges, external and internal factors and their life circumstances are exacerbated by threats to their physical and mental health. Objective: To throw a light on training for life skills which in turn leads to promotion of adolescents physical and mental health. Methods: A total of 120 adolescents participated in the study (50 of them were trained for life skills and the others act as control group) for the period April 2010 to Sept. 2011. Their age was 19 ± 2.4 years with male to female ratio of 1.4:1. The program consisted of several subjects concern with physical and mental health. Positive outcomes were determined. Scores of training variables presented in mean ± SD. Student's t test was used to examine the difference in variables between trained and untrained adolescents. Results: Scores of positive outcomes (good personal hygiene, getting enough sleep, healthy weight, got exercise, social competence (adolescent shows respect, tries to resolve conflicts and concern about self-esteem), condemnation of abuse, harassment, bullying and rape, aware about sexual transmitted diseases (STDs) including acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), intimate relationship, awareness to teen pregnancy or abortion and family planning, concern with family life (arranged marriages) and study skills (motivation, goal setting, time management, positive study attitude and empowering concentration) were significantly higher in trained than in untrained adolescents (p= 0.023, 0.025, 0.001, 0.04, 0.025, 0.001 and 0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Life skills could be applied for promotion in mental health as well as physical health.

Abstract:Objective: Burnout syndrome is an important problem among health professionals. The aim of the study is to evaluate the relationship between the burnout status and communication skills in primary care staff. Methods: The study was conducted in the cross-sectional type between April and June 2019. The population of the study comprised of physicians and family health professionals working in primary care unit. The participants were administered the Maslach Burnout Inventory, certain questions concerning sociodemographic characteristics, and the communication skills evaluation scale. Results: In total, 383 individuals working in the primary care unit participated in the study. The mean age was 43 ± 8,1 and among them, 64.8% were women. The scores of the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization of physicians were significantly higher compared to nurses. While the depersonalization score of women was significantly lower than men, the sense of personal accomplishment score was higher than men. As the number of daily clinic visits of the physicians increased, the rate of their emotional exhaustion and depersonalization increased. While the communication skills decreased as the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization increased, the communication skills level increased as the sense of personal accomplishment increased. Women, nurses, the widowed/the divorced women, and age group were determined to have better communication skills. Conclusion: A significant relation was determined between burnout subscales and increased number of daily average clinic visits of physicians, gender and occupational groups. There was a significant relationship between communication skill levels and burnout subscales concerning occupational groups, gender, marital status and age groups.
