Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are polymer networks with a precise structure and permanent porosity, making them an attractive platform for the detection of volatile analytes due to their chemical stability and accessible active sites. In this study, based on electron-rich N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)-1,4-benzenediamine moiety, two 2D COFs with different topological structures and stacking models were designed by the strategy of spatial effect. The conductivity of the AB-stacked...

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to adjust the stacking model of two - dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) through the spatial effect in order to improve the sensing performance for volatile acids. Specifically, the authors designed and synthesized two 2D COFs with different topological structures and stacking models, namely AB - stacked COF - NUST - 20 and AA - stacked COF - NUST - 30. It was found that the AB - stacked COF - NUST - 20 exhibits better performance in terms of inter - layer and intra - layer charge transfer, and thus is more sensitive to the corrosive HCl vapor, with the conductivity increased by three orders of magnitude. This finding not only shows the potential of 2D COFs as real - time responsive chemical sensors, but also provides new insights for designing highly sensitive sensing materials. ### Main research contents: 1. **Synthesis methods**: - By introducing methyl groups into the linking units, two 2D COFs with different topological structures and stacking models were designed and synthesized. - COF - NUST - 20 and COF - NUST - 30 were prepared respectively by imine condensation reaction between N,N,N′,N′ - tetra(4 - aminophenyl) - 1,4 - phenylenediamine (TPTD) and 4′,5′ - bis(4 - formylphenyl) - 3′,6′ - dimethyl - [1,1′:2′,1″ - terphenyl] - 4,4″ - dicarboxaldehyde (TPTF - Me) or 4′,5′ - bis(4 - formylphenyl) - [1,1′:2′,1″ - terphenyl] - 4,4″ - dicarboxaldehyde (TPTF). 2. **Characterization techniques**: - The structures and properties of COFs were characterized in detail by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT - IR), solid - state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). - The topological structures and stacking patterns of COFs were confirmed by powder X - ray diffraction (PXRD) and structural simulation. 3. **Performance tests**: - The response performances of the two COFs to HCl vapor were tested, including color change, change in ultraviolet - visible - near - infrared absorption spectrum (UV - visible - NIR) and change in conductivity. - The results showed that the conductivity of AB - stacked COF - NUST - 20 increased significantly after being exposed to HCl vapor, while the increase in the conductivity of AA - stacked COF - NUST - 30 was relatively small. 4. **Mechanism discussion**: - Through theoretical calculation and experimental verification, the effects of different stacking patterns on charge transfer and conductivity were explained. - Due to the inter - layer π - π interaction, the AB - stacked COF - NUST - 20 can achieve more efficient charge transfer, thus exhibiting higher conductivity and better sensing performance. ### Conclusion: This research successfully designed and synthesized two 2D COFs with different topological structures and stacking models by introducing the spatial effect. Among them, the AB - stacked COF - NUST - 20 shows significant advantages in the sensing performance for volatile acids, which provides new ideas and methods for designing highly sensitive chemical sensors.
