Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To compare and rank the effectiveness of four primary categories of exercise modalities (aerobic, resistance, mind-body, and combined exercise [CE]) in improving the Quality of life (QoL) of women with breast cancer in a network meta-analysis (NMA). METHODS:Articles published in English and indexed in the PubMed (MEDLINE), EBSCO, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, The Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, PsycINFO, EMBASE, and CINAHL Plus databases were identified from inception to 12 October 2023. Studies that met the eligibility criteria were assessed for risk of bias. A frequentist NMA was conducted to appraise the efficacy of different exercise types. RESULTS:This study included 56 studies with 3904 participants. Aerobic, mind-body, and combined exercises effectively improved QoL compared to controls. The surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) indicated that CE best improved patients' QoL (SUCRA = 96.7%). Analysis of the secondary outcomes suggests that exercise reduced patients' depression (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.38, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -0.70 to -0.06, p < 0.001; I2 = 79%) and anxiety (SMD = -0.50, 95% CI = -0.69 to -0.31, p < 0.001; I2 = 27.4%) but did not affect self-esteem. CONCLUSION:All exercise types but resistance were effective in improving the QoL of women with breast cancer, CE (the combination of aerobic and resistance exercise) had the highest likelihood of being optimal for improving QoL.

Abstract:PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION: Improving quality of life (QOL) is a key issue for patients with lung cancer. Exercise interventions could positively affect patients' QOL; however, there is no clear-cut understanding of the role of exercise in improving QOL in patients with lung cancer. LITERATURE SEARCH: The PubMed (R), Embase (R), Cochrane Library, and Web of Science electronic databases were searched from inception to September 6, 2019. DATA EVALUATION: 16 randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria. A qualitative synthesis method was used to identify the effect of exercise interventions on QOL in patients with lung cancer. SYNTHESIS: This review indicates that exercise interventions may have beneficial effects on the QOL of patients with lung cancer. The effectiveness seems to be affected by the duration of the intervention, as well as exercise frequency, intensity, and adherence. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Exercise interventions can be integrated into management plans for patients with lung cancer to improve their QOL. Healthcare providers should consider developing optimal exercise prescriptions to maximize the results for this population.

Abstract:The authors evaluated the effect of regular exercise during the first 36 months after cancer diagnosis on quality of life (QOL) in a population-based cohort study of 1,829 Chinese women diagnosed with breast cancer. The women were identified between 2002 and 2004 and were invited to participate in the study about 6 months after cancer diagnosis. Exercise was assessed approximately 6, 18, and 36 months after diagnosis, and a metabolic equivalent task (MET) score in hours per week was derived. A cumulative, weighted exercise-MET score was created for regular exercise during the 36-month postdiagnosis period. QOL was evaluated at 6 and 36 months postdiagnosis. Multiple linear regression and mixed models were conducted to evaluate the association between regular exercise and QOL, with adjustment for clinical prognostic factors and other potential confounders. Both exercise-MET scores measured during the first 6 or 36 months postdiagnosis and the weighted exercise-MET score over the 36-month postdiagnosis period were positively associated with total QOL score and physical, psychological, and social well-being scores assessed at 36 months postdiagnosis (all P for trend < 0.05). Compared with nonregular exercisers, women with higher exercise-MET scores (!8.3 MET-hours/week) were more likely to have higher scores for total QOL and specific QOL domains (all P < 0.05). The exercise-QOL association remained stable over time after cancer diagnosis. This study suggests that regular exercise after breast cancer diagnosis improves QOL. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the world (1). Approximately 4.4 million women worldwide are living with breast cancer (2, 3). In the United States, there are currently more than 2 million breast cancer survivors, and this population is growing (4). Effects of exercise interventions on cancer-related fatigue and quality of life among cancer patients: a meta-analysis

Abstract:Purpose: In this study, exercise interventions were evaluated for their effects on cancer-related fatigue (CRF) and quality of life (QoL) among cancer patients. Design: A meta-analysis was performed. Methods: We systematically searched the PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases, and gray literature sources including the Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library and Google Scholar. This study only included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining how exercise interventions affect CRF and QoL among cancer patients. Based on the Cochrane Risk-of-Bias Assessment Tool, version 2 (RoB 2) and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach, the methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated. In addition, standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were applied to assess the intervention effect with respect to CRF and QoL. Data analysis was performed using Review Manager (version 5.4). Results: There were a total of 1573 participants in the 28 included articles. According to the meta-analysis, CRF (SMD = -0.35, 95% CI: -0.63 to -0.07, p = 0.01) and QoL (SMD = 0.36, 95% CI: 0.20 to 0.53, p < 0.01) were positively affected by exercise interventions. Subgroup analyses revealed considerable improvements in CRF (SMD = -0.54, 95% CI: -1.00 to -0.09, p = 0.02) and QoL (SMD = 0.38, 95% CI: 0.16 to 0.59, p < 0.01) from aerobic exercise. An intervention duration less than 12 weeks had a better effect on CRF (SMD = -0.80, 95% CI: -1.43 to -0.17, p = 0.01) and QoL (SMD = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.21 to 0.85, p < 0.01), and three times per week was the most effective frequency in improving QoL (SMD = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.28 to 1.11, p < 0.01). Exercise intervention was more successful in improving CRF (SMD = -0.66, 95% CI: -1.10 to -0.21, p < 0.01) and QoL (SMD=-0.50, 95% CI: 0.23 to 0.78, p < 0.01) in female cancer patients. Sensitivity analyses showed that the pooled outcomes were reliable and stable. Conclusion: Exercise interventions are a workable approach to improve CRF and QoL among cancer patients. An aerobic exercise intervention of less than 12 weeks might be most effective in improving CRF and QoL, and three times per week might be the most appropriate frequency. Exercise might have a more positive effect on improving CRF and QoL in female cancer patients. Additionally, a larger number of high-quality RCTs should be conducted to further confirm the efficacy of exercise interventions on CRF and QoL among cancer patients. Abstract:PURPOSE:Anxiety, depression, and poor quality of life (QOL) were considered important concerns that hindered the rehabilitation of breast cancer survivors. A number of studies have investigated the effects of physical activity, but they have not reached the same conclusions. This review aimed to identify the effects of physical activity on QOL, anxiety, and depression in breast cancer survivors.METHODS:PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PsycINFO, SinoMed, CNKI, Vip, and WanFang databases were searched for the time period between January 1, 2012, and April 30, 2022. Studies were included if they were randomized controlled trials of the effects of physical activity on QOL, anxiety, or depression in breast cancer survivors. The tools of the Joanna Briggs Institute were used to assess the quality of the included studies. R software version 4.3.1 was used for meta-analysis.RESULTS:A total of 26 studies, involving 2105 participants, were included in the systematic review. Among these, 20 studies involving 1228 participants were included in the meta-analysis. Compared with the control group, the results indicated that physical activity can significantly improve QOL(Hedges' g = 0.67; 95% CI 0.41-0.92) and reduce anxiety (Hedges' g = -0.28; 95% CI -0.46 to -0.10) in breast cancer survivors. However, the effect of physical activity on depression (Hedges' g = -0.46; 95% CI -0.99 to 0.06) was not statistically significant.CONCLUSIONS:Physical activity was an effective intervention to improve QOL and reduce anxiety in breast cancer survivors, as well as showed positive trends in depression, although without statistical significance. Effect of Tele-exercise Interventions on Quality of Life in Cancer Patients: A Meta-analysis

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the impacts of tele-exercise intervention with cancer patients' quality of life, taking into account the influence of the duration of tele-exercise intervention, type of intervention, and gender of cancer patients on quality of life. Methods: The PubMed (MEDLINE), Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Web of Science, and PsycINFO databases were searched from inception to August 21, 2023. The Cochrane Collaboration's risk of bias tool 2 was utilized to estimate the risk of bias, and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment. For statistical analyses, R Studio was employed. Results: This meta-analysis contained eight trials. When compared to controls, tele-exercise interventions (SMD = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.12 to 0.70, p < .010; I2 = 54%, p = .030) have a positive influence on boosting the quality of life within cancer patients. Subgroup analyses demonstrated the greater effectiveness of tele-exercise in enhancing the quality of life of cancer patients when the duration was greater than or equal to 10 weeks. Furthermore, tele-exercise was found to have a stronger advantageous effect on quality of life among female cancer. In addition, among the types of interventions for tele-exercise, neither web-based nor telephone-based formats significantly enhanced quality of life among cancer patients. Conclusion: Tele-exercise interventions are a cost-effective and feasible non-pharmacologic complementary way to promote cancer patients' quality of life. Additional large-sample, carefully designed randomized controlled trials are warranted to further validate the impact of tele-exercise concerning cancer patients' quality of life. [Associations Between Physical Exercise and Quality of Life in Breast Cancer Patients].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the associations between physical exercise and quality of life in breast cancer patients.METHODS:A cross-sectional study was conducted among 3 344 community breast cancer patients between April and July 2013 in Shanghai, China. Data were collected using a questionnaire, including socio-demographic situation, cancer survival and health behaviors, and scores of EORTC QLQ-C30 Simplified Chinese version and FACT-G Simplified Chinese version.RESULTS:Among a total of 3 344 breast cancer patients, the patients doing exercise reported significantly higher EORTC physical functioning scores, role functioning scores, emotional functioning scores, global health scores, and FACT-G physical well-being scores, social well-being scores, emotional well-being scores, functional well-being scores, and FACT-G total scores than the patients who didn't take exercise (P < 0.05, P(Adjusted)<0.05) . Breast cancer patients who did exercise more than or equal to 5 times/week reported significantly higher EORTC role functioning scores, cognitive functioning scores, emotional functioning scores, global health scores and FACT-G physical well-being scores, functional well-being scores, and FACT-G total scores than patients who did exercise less than 5 times/week (P < 0.05, P(Adjusted)<0.05 ).CONCLUSIONS:There are active associations between physical exercise and quality of life in breast cancer patients. Engagement in physical exercise is beneficial to breast cancer patients with long-term survival.
Effects of Exercise Intervention on Quality of Life in Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Patients and Survivors: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Background: Cancer and its treatment significantly impact the quality of life (QOL) of adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients. This meta-analysis examined the effects of exercise interventions on the generic and cancer-specific QOL of AYA cancer patients and survivors. Methods: Four databases were searched from January 2010 to September 2019. RevMan 5.3 was used to synthesize the effects of exercise intervention on the QOL of AYA cancer patients and survivors. Results: A total of 11 eligible studies have been included in this paper. Direct outcome comparisons found that pooled overall effects on generic QOL were in favor of exercise interventions, but only with marginal significance (Z= 1.96, P = 0.05). When performing the subscale analysis of the generic QOL, three trials assessed the effects of exercise interventions on the emotional domain of QOL, and the weighted mean difference (WMD) for the overall intervention effect was 3.47 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.42 to 6.51). Additionally, exercise interventions increased the minutes of physical activity per week undertaken by AYA cancer patients and survivors (Z= 2.88, P = 0.004). Conclusion: Exercise interventions had positive effects on generic QOL and increased the minutes of physical activity per week undertaken by AYA cancer patients and survivors. In addition, exercise intervention programs appear to be safe, as there were no studies that reported adverse events. Future research, with rigorous methodological standards and larger sample sizes, should be designed to confirm the positive effects of exercise interventions on the QOL of AYA cancer patients and survivors.
Effect of different exercise types on quality of life in patients with breast cancer: A network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract:Background: Exercise is a rehabilitation strategy for patients with breast cancer; however, the optimal type of exercise remains uncertain. This study aimed to compare the effects of five exercise types on the quality of life of patients with breast cancer and provide a basis for their exercise rehabilitation. Methods: As of May 2024, we searched four databases: Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, and included randomized controlled trials that analyzed the effect of exercise on the quality of life of patients with breast cancer. A network meta-analysis was performed using a frequency-based framework. Results: Forty-five papers involving 4092 participants were included. The five types of exercises included were all significant in the direct comparison with the control group, except yoga and mind-body exercises. Aerobic, resistance, and combination exercises were associated with quality of life. However, in indirect comparisons, only mind-body exercise versus resistance exercise had a significant effect. The effect of exercise on the quality of life(total health status) of patients with breast cancer was ranked based on surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) values combined with effect sizes as follows: aerobic exercise (SUCRA = 84.1) > combined exercise (SUCRA = 78.8) > resistance exercise (SUCRA = 66.4) > yoga (SUCRA = 39.3) > mind-body exercise (SUCRA = 27.2) > usual care (SUCRA = 4.1). Conclusions: Exercise can rehabilitate the quality of life of patients with breast cancer, and aerobic exercise may be the best type of exercise to improve their quality of life(total health status).

Abstract:Context Patients with advanced-stage cancer often suffer many physical and psychological symptoms. Exercise has been shown to improve quality of life (QoL), decrease cancer-related symptoms, and maintain or improve functional status in cancer survivors or patients with early stage cancer. However, the effect of exercise on these outcomes in patients with advanced-stage cancer is unclear. Objectives This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of exercise interventions for patients with advanced-stage cancer in improving cancer-related symptoms and functional status outcomes. Methods We conducted a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science from their inception to February 3, 2019, to include randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing exercise and usual care for improving outcomes in patients with advanced-stage cancer. Two reviewers independently screened the studies, extracted data of interest, and assessed the risk of bias of individual RCTs using the Cochrane Handbook, Version 5.1.0. Results About 15 RCTs enrolling 1208 patients were included. Compared with usual care, exercise showed a significant improvement in QoL (standardized mean difference [SMD] 0.22; 95% CI 0.06–0.38; P = 0.009), fatigue (SMD −0.25; 95% CI −0.45 to −0.04; P = 0.02), insomnia (SMD −0.36; 95% CI −0.56 to −0.17; P = 0.0002), physical function (SMD 0.22; 95% CI 0.05–0.38; P = 0.009), social function (SMD 0.18; 95% CI 0.02–0.34; P = 0.03), and dyspnea reduction (SMD −0.18; 95% CI −0.34 to −0.01; P = 0.03). Conclusion Exercise serves as an effective intervention to improve QoL and alleviate fatigue, insomnia, dyspnea, and physical and social functions for patients with advanced-stage cancer.

METHODS:We conducted a search using English and Chinese databases, namely PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, ProQuest, the Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Literature (CBM), Wanfang Data, and China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP) up to December 4, 2018. We selected randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental trials that compared the effects of home-based exercise and routine guidance on exercise capacity, cancer-related fatigue, insomnia, pain, appetite loss, coughing, anxiety, depression, and quality of life of patients with lung cancer. The effect size was calculated using mean difference and 95% confidence interval, data were analyzed using the Stata version 12.0 software. RESULTS:We retrieved seven randomized controlled trials and seven quasi-experimental trials involving 694 patients in total. Home-based exercise significantly improved exercise capacity, reduced cancer-related fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, and depression, and improved quality of life (P < .05). However, it did not significantly reduce pain, appetite loss, and coughing symptoms (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS:Home-based exercise is a beneficial approach to improving exercise capacity, some symptoms, and quality of life of patients with lung cancer. Home-based exercise should be routinely recommended by health professionals when patients with lung cancer are discharged from hospital.
Effects of exercise by type and duration on quality of life in patients with digestive system cancers: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Abstract:Background There is scant evidence regarding the effects of exercise type and duration on quality of life (QoL) in digestive system cancer (DSC) survivors. We aim to investigate the optimal type and duration of exercises to improve QoL for DSC survivors through a systematic review and network meta-analysis. Methods A systematic literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science was performed. Eligibility for study inclusion was limited to studies that were randomized controlled trials involving all kinds of exercise in adult patients with DSCs, and the comparator was in standard care or other types of exercise. The primary outcome was QoL, including general health, physical health, mental health, and role function. Secondary outcomes included cancer-related symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and duration of hospital stay. The network meta-analyses were performed using a random-effect model. Results The analysis included 32 eligible articles and a total of 2558 participants. Our primary outcome indicated that short-term aerobic exercise significantly enhanced general health (standardized mean differences (SMDs)‚ÄØ=‚ÄØ0.66, 95% credible intervals (CrIs): 0.05 to 1.3, and also contributed to a better mental health (SMD‚ÄØ=‚ÄØ0.37, 95%CrI: -0.06 to 0.81 and role function (SMD‚ÄØ=‚ÄØ0.48, 95%CrI: ‚Äì0.27 to 1.20). Although without significant changes, short-term resistance exercise tends to increase the physical health of patients with DSCs (SMD‚ÄØ=‚ÄØ0.69, 95%CrI: ‚Äì0.07 to 1.50) and effective in alleviating fatigue (SMD‚ÄØ=‚ÄØ‚Äì0.77, 95%CrI: ‚Äì1.50 to 0.01). Short-term aerobic exercise was related to a lower score of insomnia (SMD‚ÄØ=‚ÄØ‚Äì1.20, 95%CrI: ‚Äì2.40 to 0.06), depression (SMD‚ÄØ=‚ÄØ‚Äì0.51, 95%CrI: ‚Äì1.50 to 0.45) and anxiety (SMD‚ÄØ=‚ÄØ‚Äì0.45, 95%CrI: ‚Äì1.30 to 0.34). All types of exercise related to a trend of declined hospital stays (‚Äì0.87 to ‚Äì5 days). Long-term resistance exercise, however, was negatively associated with general health (SMD‚ÄØ=‚ÄØ‚Äì0.33, 95%CrI: ‚Äì1.70 to 1.00), physical health (SMD‚ÄØ=‚ÄØ‚Äì0.19, 95%CrI:‚Äì1.30 to 0.90), and role function (SMD‚ÄØ=‚ÄØ‚Äì1.20, 95%CrI: ‚Äì2.50 to 0.11). Conclusions This study suggests that short-term aerobic exercise, with or without resistance exercise programs, enhances QoL (especially for general health) as well as relieves cancer-related symptoms for DSC survivors, while long-term resistance exercise may have negative effects, and thus should be adopted cautiously. These results provide important evidence for the management of DSCs.

The Influence of Exercise on Quality of Life among Cancer Survivors: A Meta-analysis.

Abstract:PURPOSE: Cancer survivors may experience improved quality of life (QOL) by engaging in physical activity (PA), though many fail to do so. We meta-analytically reviewed studies that evaluated the efficacy of exercise as an intervention to enhance QOL among cancer survivors. METHODS: Studies with interventions were included if they: (1) were intended to increase PA in adult cancer survivors; (2) included a valid self-report measure of QOL; (3) had an appropriate between- or within-subjects comparison; and (4) provided sufficient statistical information to calculate an effect size. RESULTS: We found PA interventions positively affected QOL among cancer survivors (d =.3301, P =.0006), although interventions varied widely in their efficacy. Interventions were more successful when they: (1) offered a greater numbers of sessions; (2) offered longer sessions; (3) demanded greater metabolic energy equivalents (METS) of aerobic activity; and (4) enrolled breast cancer survivors versus other cancer survivors. CONCLUSIONS: Findings highlight PA intervention characteristics that may be particularly important in enhancing QOL among cancer survivors. These characteristics should be considered when designing future exercise interventions. Future research may widen the body of research included in these meta-analyses by examining additional dependent variables such as cardiovascular fitness and fatigue.

The identification of strategies to improve life satisfaction in patients with cancer is of great interest to health practitioners since it may be associated with a better prognosis of cancer and higher survival rates. Previous meta-analyses and reviews concluded that exercise could significantly improve health-related quality of life in this population, but the effects of exercise on life satisfaction are still not well-known. This review aims to analyse the effects of exercise programs on life satisfaction in people with cancer and individuals who have overcome cancer.

Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Objective</h3><p>The primary purpose of this study is to structure the available evidence relating to physical exercise programs and their impact on patients' cardiovascular system during the convalescence for breast cancer.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>We searched six English databases and four Chinese databases from inception to May 19, 2021. Two reviewers independently screened literature, extracted data. They assessed the risk of bias according to the eligibility criteria, and the Cochrane Collaboration RevMan 5.3.0 version software and STATA 15.0 software were used for this meta-analysis. This study has been registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42021226319).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>In total, 3483 articles were screened and data from 11 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 666 breast cancer patients were used in this meta-analysis. The results showed that exercise could decrease systolic blood pressure (SBP) (P=0.006), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (P=0.0003), triglycerides (TG) levels (P<0.00001), body mass index (BMI) (P=0.009). Results also showed that exercise could significantly increase peak oxygen uptake (VO2<sub>peak</sub>) (P=0.009), maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) (P=0.01), and High-density leptin cholesterol (HDL-C) levels (P<0.0001). However, compared with the control group, there was no significant changes of mean arterial pressure (MAP), peak heart rate (HRpeak), and peak respiratory exchange ratio (PERpeak) (P>0.05).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>Physical exercise could improve the cardiovascular system function associated with decreased the levels of SBP, DBP, TG, and increased the levels of VO2peak, VO2max, and HDL-C in breast cancer patients. These findings reveal that exercise may be a promising means for cardiovascular nursing.</p>

Abstract:Background Exercise improves quality of life (QOL) in cancer survivors, although characteristics of efficacious exercise interventions for this population have not been identified. Purpose The present meta-analysis examines the efficacy of exercise interventions in improving QOL in cancer survivors, as well as features that may moderate such effects. Method Studies were identified and coded, and QOL effect sizes were calculated and analyzed for trends. Results Overall, exercise interventions increased QOL, but this tendency depended to some extent on exercise and patient features. Although several features were associated with effect sizes, models revealed that interventions were particularly successful if they targeted more intense aerobic exercise and addressed women. These tendencies emerged over longer periods of time and were more prominent in studies with higher methodological quality. Conclusion Appropriately designed exercise interventions enhance QOL for cancer survivors and this pattern is especially evident for women. Limitations are discussed.
