Abstract:Due to the shuttle effect of polysulfide, lithium-sulfur batteries have poor C-rate performance and fast capacity decay, which limit their application. To inhibit the shuttle effect of polysulfide in lithium-sulfur batteries and improve the C-rate performance and cycle performance of lithium-sulfur batteries, expanded dickite with expansive silicate layers and acetylene black is used to coat polypropylene separator matrix to prepare a novel type of composite separator. It is found that the active hydroxyl groups on the surface of expanded dickite can bond with the sulfur atoms in polysulfides, realizing the adsorption of polysulfides by expanded dickite, and thus achieving the inhibition effect of the composite separator on the shuttle effect of polysulfides. By the high conductivity of acetylene black in the composite separator, the adsorbed polysulfides are reactivated and participated in the battery reaction, improving the utilization of active substances. In addition, due to the negative charge at the edges of the expanded dickite layer, a high-speed lithium ion transport channel is formed along the edges of the expanded dickite layer. The lithium-sulfur battery using the novel composite separator exhibits a specific discharge capacity of 746.2 mAh g −1 at a rate of 2 C. After 100 cycles, the average attenuation rate per cycle is only 0.230%. This composite separator coated with expanded dickite and acetylene black in lithium-sulfur batteries effectively improves the C-rate performance and cycle performance of the batteries.
