Abstract:Farmed soils contribute substantially to global warming by emitting N 2 O (ref. 1 ), and mitigation has proved difficult 2 . Several microbial nitrogen transformations produce N 2 O, but the only biological sink for N 2 O is the enzyme NosZ, catalysing the reduction of N 2 O to N 2 (ref. 3 ). Although strengthening the NosZ activity in soils would reduce N 2 O emissions, such bioengineering of the soil microbiota is considered challenging 4,5 . However, we have developed a technology to achieve this, using organic waste as a substrate and vector for N 2 O-respiring bacteria selected for their capacity to thrive in soil 6,7,8 . Here we have analysed the biokinetics of N 2 O reduction by our most promising N 2 O-respiring bacterium, Cloacibacterium sp. CB-01, its survival in soil and its effect on N 2 O emissions in field experiments. Fertilization with waste from biogas production, in which CB-01 had grown aerobically to about 6 × 10 9 cells per millilitre, reduced N 2 O emissions by 50–95%, depending on soil type. The strong and long-lasting effect of CB-01 is ascribed to its tenacity in soil, rather than its biokinetic parameters, which were inferior to those of other strains of N 2 O-respiring bacteria. Scaling our data up to the European level, we find that national anthropogenic N 2 O emissions could be reduced by 5–20%, and more if including other organic wastes. This opens an avenue for cost-effective reduction of N 2 O emissions for which other mitigation options are lacking at present.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O) emitted from agricultural soils destroys stratospheric ozone and contributes to global warming. A promising approach to reduce emissions is fertilizing the soil using organic wastes augmented by non-denitrifying N2O-reducing bacteria (NNRB). To realize this potential, we need a suite of NNRB strains that fulfill several criteria: efficient reduction of N2O, ability to grow in organic waste, and ability to survive in farmland soil. In this study, we enriched such organisms by sequential anaerobic batch incubations with N2O and reciprocating inoculation between the sterilized substrates of anaerobic manure digestate and soils. 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing and metagenomics analysis showed that a cluster of bacteria containing nosZ genes encoding N2O-reductase, was enriched during the incubation process. Strains of several dominant members were then isolated and characterized, and three of them were found to harbor the nosZ gene but none of the other denitrifying genes, thus qualifying as NNRB. The selected isolates were tested for their capacities to reduce N2O emissions from three different typical Chinese farmland soils. The results indicated the significant mitigation effect of these isolates, even in very acidic red soil. In conclusion, this study demonstrated a strategy to engineer the soil microbiome with promising NNRB with high adaptability to livestock manure digestate as well as different agricultural soils, which would be suitable for developing novel fertilizer for farmland application to efficiently mitigate the N2O emissions from agricultural soils.

Abstract:AbstractNitrous oxide (N2O) is a greenhouse gas and a potent ozone-depleting substance in the stratosphere. Agricultural soils are one of the main global sources of N2O emissions, particularly from cereal fields due to their high areal coverage. The aim of this study was to isolate N2O-reducing bacteria able to mitigate N2O emissions from the soil after inoculation. We isolated several bacteria from wheat roots that were capable of N2O reductionin vitroand studied their genetic potential and activity under different environmental conditions. Three of these isolates- all carrying the nitrous oxide reductase-encoding clade InosZ, able to reduce N2Oin vitro, and efficient colonizers of wheat roots- presented different N2O-reduction strategies when growing in the root zone, possibly due to the different conditionsin situand their metabolic preferences. Each isolate seemed to prefer to operate at different altered oxygen levels. Isolate AU243 (related toAgrobacterium/Rhizobium) could reduce both nitrate and N2O and operated better at lower oxygen levels. Isolate AU14 (related toAlcaligenes faecalis), lacking nitrate reductases, operated better under less anoxic conditions. Isolate NT128 (related toPseudomonas stutzeri) caused slightly increased N2O emissions under both anoxic and ambient conditions. These results therefore emphasize the importance of a deep understanding of soil–plant–microbe interactions when environmental application is being considered.

Abstract:Abstract Inoculating agricultural soils with nitrous oxide respiring bacteria (NRB) can reduce N 2 O-emission, but would be impractical as a standalone operation. Here we demonstrate that digestates obtained after biogas production are suitable substrates and vectors for NRB. We show that indigenous NRB in digestates grew to high abundance during anaerobic enrichment under N 2 O. Gas-kinetics and meta-omic analyses showed that these NRB’s, recovered as metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), grew by harvesting fermentation intermediates of the methanogenic consortium. Three NRB’s were isolated, one of which matched the recovered MAG of a Dechloromonas , deemed by proteomics to be the dominant producer of N 2 O-reductase in the enrichment. While the isolates harbored genes required for a full denitrification pathway and could thus both produce and sequester N 2 O, their regulatory traits predicted that they act as N 2 O sinks in soil, which was confirmed experimentally. The isolates were grown by aerobic respiration in digestates, and fertilization with these NRB-enriched digestates reduced N 2 O emissions from soil. Our use of digestates for low-cost and large-scale inoculation with NRB in soil can be taken as a blueprint for future applications of this powerful instrument to engineer the soil microbiome, be it for enhancing plant growth, bioremediation, or any other desirable function.
Distinct Denitrifying Phenotypes of Predominant Bacteria Modulate Nitrous Oxide Metabolism in Two Typical Cropland Soils

Abstract:Denitrifying nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in agroecosystems result from variations in microbial composition and soil properties. However, the microbial mechanisms of differential N2O emissions in agricultural soils are less understood. In this study, microcosm experiments using two main types of Chinese cropland soil were conducted with different supplements of nitrate and glucose to simulate the varying nitrogen and carbon conditions. The results show that N2O accumulation in black soil (BF) was significantly higher than that in fluvo-aquic soil (FF) independent of nitrogen and carbon. The abundance of most denitrifying genes was significantly higher in FF, but the ratios of genes responsible for N2O production (nirS and nirK) to the gene responsible for N2O reduction (nosZ) did not significantly differ between the two soils. However, the soils showed obvious discrepancies in denitrifying bacterial communities, with a higher abundance of N2O-generating bacteria in BF and a higher abundance of N2O-reducing bacteria in FF. High accumulation of N2O was verified by the bacterial isolates of Rhodanobacter predominated in BF due to a lack of N2O reduction capacity. The dominance of Castellaniella and others in FF led to a rapid reduction in N2O and thus less N2O accumulation, as demonstrated when the corresponding isolate was inoculated into the studied soils. Therefore, the different phenotypes of N2O metabolism of the distinct denitrifiers predominantly colonized the two soils, causing differing N2O accumulation. This knowledge would help to develop a strategy for mitigating N2O emissions in agricultural soils by regulating the phenotypes of N2O metabolism.

Abstract:The nitrogen (N)-use efficiency of agricultural plants is notoriously poor. Globally, about 50% of the N fertilizer applied to cropping systems is not absorbed by plants, but lost to the environment as ammonia (NH3), nitrate (NO3−), and nitrous oxide (N2O, a greenhouse gas with 300 times the heat-trapping capacity of carbon dioxide), raising agricultural production costs and contributing to pollution and climate change. These losses are driven by volatilization of NH3 and by a matrix of nitrification and denitrification reactions catalysed by soil microorganisms (chiefly bacteria and archaea). Here, we discuss mitigation of the harmful and wasteful process of agricultural N loss via biological nitrification inhibitors (BNIs) exuded by plant roots. We examine key recent discoveries in the emerging field of BNI research, focusing on BNI compounds and their specificity and transport, and discuss prospects for their role in improving agriculture while reducing its environmental impact.

Abstract:The only known sink for nitrous oxide (N2O) is biochemical reduction to dinitrogen (N2) by N2O reductase (N2OR). We hypothesized that the application of N2O-reducing denitrifier-inoculated organic fertilizer could enhance soil N2O consumption while the disruption of nosZ genes could result in inactivation of N2O consumption. To test such hypotheses, a denitrifier-inoculated granular organic fertilizer was applied to both soil microcosms and fields. Of 41 denitrifier strains, 38 generated 30N2 in the end products of denitrification (30N2 and 46N2O) after the addition of Na15NO3 in culture condition, indicating their high N2O reductase activities. Of these 41 strains, 18 were screened in soil microcosms after their inoculation into the organic fertilizer, most of which were affiliated with Azospirillum and Herbaspirillum. These 18 strains were nutritionally starved to improve their survival in soil, and 14 starved and/or non-starved strains significantly decreased N2O emissions in soil microcosms. However, the N2O emission had not been decreased in soil microcosms after inoculating with a nosZ gene-disruptive strain, suggesting that N2O reductase activity might be essential for N2O consumption. Although the decrease of N2O was not significant at field scales, the application of organic fertilizer inoculated with Azospirillum sp. TSH100 and Herbaspirillum sp. UKPF54 had decreased the N2O emissions by 36.7% in Fluvisol and 23.4% in Andosol in 2014, but by 21.6% in Andosol in 2015 (H. sp. UKPF54 only). These results suggest that the application of N2O-reducing denitrifier-inoculated organic fertilizer may enhance N2O consumption or decrease N2O emissions in agricultural soils.

Abstract:Agriculture is a major anthropogenic source of the greenhouse gas N2O, which is also involved in stratospheric ozone depletion. While the use of rhizobial inoculants has already been reported as an emerging option for mitigating soil N2O emissions, this study presents an in situ abatement of 70% of soil N2O emission using the strain nosZ+ G49 vs. nosZ− USDA138 in association with soybean. Therefore, we consider that the choice of the inoculant strain of a leguminous crop should take into account the capacity of strains to reduce nitrous oxide in addition to their N fixation capacity. This study also clearly suggests that this mitigation option could be considered not only for soybean but also for different leguminous crops, with emphasis currently placed on lupin because of the potential of its association with the nosZ+ LL200 strain. The clear demonstration of the N2O reduction capacity of clover symbiotic strains suggests that opportunities for mitigation might also occur on grassland.

Abstract:Denitrification in agricultural soils is a major source of N2O. Legume crops enhance N2O emission by providing N-rich residues, thereby stimulating denitrification, both by free-living denitrifying bacteria and by the symbiont (rhizobium) within the nodules. However, there are limited data concerning N2O production and consumption by endosymbiotic bacteria associated with legume crops. It has been reported that the alfalfa endosymbiont Ensifer meliloti strain 1021, despite possessing and expressing the complete set of denitrification enzymes, is unable to grow via nitrate respiration under anoxic conditions. In the present study, we have demonstrated by using a robotized incubation system that this bacterium is able to grow through anaerobic respiration of N2O to N2. N2O reductase (N2OR) activity was not dependent on the presence of nitrogen oxyanions or NO, thus the expression could be induced by oxygen depletion alone. When incubated at pH 6, E. meliloti was unable to reduce N2O, corroborating previous observations found in both, extracted soil bacteria and Paracoccus denitrificans pure cultures, where expression of functional N2O reductase is difficult at low pH. Furthermore, the presence in the medium of highly reduced C-substrates, such as butyrate, negatively affected N2OR activity. The emission of N2O from soils can be lowered if legumes plants are inoculated with rhizobial strains overexpressing N2O reductase. This study demonstrates that strains like E. meliloti 1021, which do not produce N2O but are able to reduce the N2O emitted by other organisms, could act as even better N2O sinks.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is a potent greenhouse gas, and agricultural soils represent a major anthropogenic source. Crop residues provide nutrients for plants but also act as hotspots of N 2 O production. The hyphae of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) could proliferate in organic patches, utilize released N from the organic patches, and potentially mitigate N 2 O emissions. However, the effect of AMF on N 2 O emissions in degraded residue patches and the possible microbial mechanism remain uncertain. Here, a mesocosm experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of AMF ( Funneliformis mosseae ) inoculation on N 2 O emissions, availabilities of carbon and nitrogen, extracellular enzyme activities, and the abundance of key N-cycling genes in degraded residue patches. Our results showed that AMF hyphae significantly reduced N 2 O emissions from degraded residue patches. Quantitative PCR analysis of key functional genes involved in N 2 O production ( amoA , nirK , nirS ) and consumption ( nosZ ) showed that AMF significantly reduced the abundance of the bacterial amoA and nirS genes. NH 4 + , NO 3 − , total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), total nitrogen (TN), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) contents decreased drastically in the presence of AMF. In addition, the activities of all tested extracellular enzymes were significantly decreased by AMF and positively correlated with DOC content. Multiple stepwise regression analysis demonstrated that the abundance of the nirS gene primarily influenced N 2 O emissions and was positively correlated with DOC content in degraded residue patches. Our findings indicate that AMF suppressed N 2 O producers, particularly nirS -type denitrifiers, by slowing down the release of C and N from degraded residues, thereby leading to a cascade effect on the decrease of N 2 O emissions. This study provides a promising approach to mitigate N 2 O emissions by enhancing AMF in the agroecosystems.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an important greenhouse gas and fundamental questions about the capacity of soil microbial communities to act not only as sources, but also as sinks for N2O remains unanswered. We evaluated the capacity of non-denitrifying N2O-reducers to mitigate the production of this greenhouse gas in soil. We showed experimentally that the addition of the non-denitrifying strain Dyadobacter fermentans, which possesses the previously unaccounted N2O reductase NosZII, to 11 different soils significantly reduced N2O production of up to 189% in more than 1/3 of the soils. The magnitude of this effect was significantly influenced by the soil pH and C/N ratio. Overall, our results provide unambiguous evidence that the overlooked non-denitrifying NosZII-type bacteria can contribute to N2O consumption in soil.

Abstract:Synthetic inhibitors and organic amendment have been proposed for mitigating greenhouse gas N2O emissions. However, their combined effect on the N2O emissions and ammonia-oxidizer (ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea, AOB and AOA) communities remains unclear in calcareous soils under climate warming. We conducted two incubation experiments (25 and 35 °C) to examine how N2O emissions and AOA and AOB communities responded to organic amendment (urea plus cattle manure, UCM), and in combination with urease (N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide, NBPT) and nitrification inhibitor (nitrapyrin). The treatments of UCM + nitrapyrin and UCM + nitrapyrin + NBPT significantly lowered total N2O emissions by average 64.5 and 71.05% at 25 and 35 °C, respectively, compared with UCM treatment. AOB gene abundance and α-diversity (Chao1 and Shannon indices) were significantly increased by the application of urea and manure (P < 0.05). However, relative to UCM treatment, nitrapyrin addition treatments decreased AOB gene abundance and Chao 1 index by average 115.4 and 30.4% at 25 and 35 °C, respectively. PCA analysis showed that UCM or UCM plus nitrapyrin notably shifted AOB structure at both temperatures. However, fertilization had little effects on AOA community (P > 0.05). Potential nitrification rate (PNR) was greatly decreased by nitrapyrin addition, and PNR significantly positively correlated with AOB gene abundance (P = 0.0179 at 25 °C and P = 0.0029 at 35 °C) rather than AOA (P > 0.05). Structural equation model analysis showed that temperature directly increased AOA abundance but decrease AOB abundance, while fertilization indirectly influenced AOB community by altering soil NH4+, pH and SOC. In conclusion, the combined application of organic amendment, NBPT and nitrapyrin significantly lowered N2O emissions via reducing AOB community in calcareous soil even at high temperature. Our findings provide a solid theoretical basis in mitigating N2O emissions from calcareous soil under climate warming.

Peaks of in situ N2 O emissions are influenced by N2 O-producing and reducing microbial communities across arable soils

Abstract:Agriculture is the main source of terrestrial N2 O emissions, a potent greenhouse gas and the main cause of ozone depletion. The reduction of N2 O into N2 by microorganisms carrying the nitrous oxide reductase gene (nosZ) is the only known biological process eliminating this greenhouse gas. Recent studies showed that a previously unknown clade of N2 O-reducers (nosZII) was related to the potential capacity of the soil to act as a N2 O sink. However, little is known about how this group responds to different agricultural practices. Here, we investigated how N2 O-producers and N2 O-reducers were affected by agricultural practices across a range of cropping systems in order to evaluate the consequences for N2 O emissions. The abundance of both ammonia-oxidizers and denitrifiers was quantified by real-time qPCR, and the diversity of nosZ clades was determined by 454 pyrosequencing. Denitrification and nitrification potential activities as well as in situ N2 O emissions were also assessed. Overall, greatest differences in microbial activity, diversity, and abundance were observed between sites rather than between agricultural practices at each site. To better understand the contribution of abiotic and biotic factors to the in situ N2 O emissions, we subdivided more than 59,000 field measurements into fractions from low to high rates. We found that the low N2 O emission rates were mainly explained by variation in soil properties (up to 59%), while the high rates were explained by variation in abundance and diversity of microbial communities (up to 68%). Notably, the diversity of the nosZII clade but not of the nosZI clade was important to explain the variation of in situ N2 O emissions. Altogether, these results lay the foundation for a better understanding of the response of N2 O-reducing bacteria to agricultural practices and how it may ultimately affect N2 O emissions.
Inoculation with Stutzerimonas stutzeri strains decreases N2O emissions from vegetable soil by altering microbial community composition and diversity

However, limited PGPR strains can mitigate N2O emissions from agricultural soils, and the microbial ecological mechanisms underlying N2O mitigation after inoculation are poorly understood. In greenhouse pot experiments, the effects of inoculation with Stutzerimonas stutzeri NRCB010 and NRCB025 on tomato growth and N2O emissions were investigated in two vegetable agricultural soils with contrasting textures. Inoculation with NRCB010 and NRCB025 significantly promoted tomato growth in both soils. Moreover, inoculation with NRCB010 decreased the N2O emissions from the fine- and coarse-textured soils by 38.7% and 52.2%, respectively, and inoculation with NRCB025 decreased the N2O emissions from the coarse-textured soil by 76.6%. Inoculation with NRCB010 and NRCB025 decreased N2O emissions mainly by altering soil microbial community composition and the abundance of nitrogen-cycle functional genes. The N2O-mitigating effect might be partially explained by a decrease in the ( amoA + amoB )/( nosZ I + nosZ II) and ( nirS + nirK )/( nosZ I + nosZ II) ratios, respectively. Soil pH and organic matter were key variables that explain the variation in abundance of N-cycle functional genes and subsequent N2O emission. Moreover, the N2O-mitigating effect varied depending on soil textures and individual strain after inoculation. This study provides insights into developing biofertilizers with plant growth-promoting and N2O-mitigating effects. IMPORTANCE Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have been applied to mitigate nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from agricultural soils, but the microbial ecological mechanisms underlying N2O mitigation are poorly understood. That is why only limited PGPR strains can mitigate N2O emissions from agricultural soils. Therefore, it is of substantial significance to reveal soil ecological mechanisms of PGPR strains to achieve efficient and reliable N2O-mitigating effect after inoculation. Inoculation with Stutzerimonas stutzeri strains decreased N2O emissions from two soils with contrasting textures probably by altering soil microbial community composition and gene abundance involved in nitrification and denitrification. Our findings provide detailed insight into soil ecological mechanisms of PGPR strains to mitigate N2O emissions from vegetable agricultural soils.

Distinct denitrifying phenotypes of predominant bacteria mould nitrous oxide metabolism in upland agricultural soils

Abstract:Abstract Denitrifying nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions in agroecosystems result from variations in microbial composition and soil properties. However, the microbial mechanisms of differential N 2 O emissions in agricultural soils are less understood. Microcosm experiments of two types of Chinese farmland soil were conducted with nitrate (250 mg/kg) and a combination of glucose (1000 mg/kg) and nitrate, and a case with no addition was used as the control. The results show that N 2 O accumulation in black soil (BF) was significantly higher than that in fluvo-aquic soil (FF) independent of carbon and nitrogen supply. The abundance of denitrifying genes was significantly higher in FF, but the ratios of genes responsible for N 2 O production ( narG, nir S, and nirK ) to the gene for N 2 O reduction ( nosZ ) did not significantly differ between the two soils. However, the soils showed obvious discrepancies in denitrifying bacterial communities. High accumulation of N 2 O was verified by the isolates of Rhodanobacter , which is predominant in BF due to its truncated denitrifying genes and lack of N 2 O reduction capacity. The dominance of complete denitrifiers such as Castellaniella in FF led to a rapid reduction in N 2 O and reduced N 2 O accumulation, as demonstrated when its corresponding isolate was inoculated into both studied soils. Therefore, the different phenotypes of N 2 O metabolism of the distinct denitrifiers maintained in the two soils caused their differing N 2 O accumulation. This knowledge could guide the regulation of the denitrifying bacterial community and the phenotypes of N 2 O metabolism in agricultural soils to reduce N 2 O emissions.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the effects of a biological nitrification inhibitor on nitrous oxide emission and rice yield quality in paddy soils and its effects on denitrifying the bacteria of nosZ, nirK, and nirS types. Two treatments were performed: (1) using a local conventional fertilizer as the control CK; (2) using the partial application of a conventional fertilizer + biological nitrification inhibitor as SW. N2O emission was measured using gas chromatography; qPCR amplification was performed using primers for the targeted functional genes, nosZ, nirS, and nirK, and denitrifying functional gene abundance and denitrifying microbial community structure were analyzed using fluorescence quantification and high–throughput sequencing, respectively. The results reveal that the biological nitrification inhibitor resulted in a 41.83% reduction in N2O, relative to the normal fertilizer treatment. Meanwhile, rice yield increased by 15.45% and related quality indexes were also improved. This can promote the reproduction of bacteria with the nosZ gene while inhibiting the growth of bacteria with nirS and nirK genes. The core bacteria, Nitrosospira, Rhodanobacter, Bradyrhizobium, Tardiphaga, Rhodopseudomonas, and Paracoccus, positively correlated with N2O emissions, while core bacteria Azospirillum, Burkholderia, and Mesorhizobium negatively correlated with N2O emissions. Therefore, the application of a biological nitrification inhibitor could be an effective measure to promote rice yield and quality, reduce N2O emissions, and affect key denitrifying bacteria.

Abstract:Excessive ammonia (NH3) emitted from nitrogen fertilizer application in farmland have caused serious disturbance to global environment, including reduction of visibility, formation of regional haze, and increase of nitrogen deposition. Application of biofertilizer has been considered as an effective approach for soil improvement and agriculture sustainability. In this study, a field experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of B. subtilis biofertilizer on mitigating NH3 volatilization and to investigate the underlying mechanisms. Compared with organic fertilizer, the incorporation of B. subtilis biofertilizer reduced NH3 volatilization by up to 44%. Moreover, the application of B. subtilis biofertilizer reduced the abundance of ureC gene, and increased the abundance of functional genes (bacterial amoA and comammox amoA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). This indicated that the conversion of fertilizer nitrogen to NH4+-N was decreased and the nitrification process was increased. In brief, the application of B. subtilis biofertilizer reduced the "source" and increased the "sink" of NH4+-N, thus reducing the retention of NH4+-N in alkaline soil, and mitigating NH3 volatilization. These results indicated that B. subtilis biofertilizer is an effective control strategy for agricultural NH3 emission, maintaining high crop yield and mitigating environmental disturbance.
AOB Nitrosospira cluster 3a.2 (D11) dominates N 2 O emissions in fertilised agricultural soils

Abstract:Ammonia-oxidation process directly contribute to soil nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions in agricultural soils. However, taxonomy of the key nitrifiers (within ammonia oxidising bacteria (AOB), archaea (AOA) and complete ammonia oxidisers (comammox Nitrospira )) responsible for substantial N 2 O emissions in agricultural soils is unknown, as is their regulation by soil biotic and abiotic factors. In this study, cumulative N 2 O emissions, nitrification rates, abundance and community structure of nitrifiers were investigated in 16 agricultural soils from major crop production regions of China using microcosm experiments with amended nitrogen (N) supplemented or not with a nitrification inhibitor (nitrapyrin). Key nitrifier groups involved in N 2 O emissions were identified by comparative analyses of the different treatments, combining sequencing and random forest analyses. Soil cumulative N 2 O emissions significantly increased with soil pH in all agricultural soils. However, they decreased with soil organic carbon (SOC) in alkaline soils. Nitrapyrin significantly inhibited soil cumulative N 2 O emissions and AOB growth, with a significant inhibition of the AOB Nitrosospira cluster 3a.2 (D11) abundance. One Nitrosospira multiformis -like OTU phylotype (OTU34), which was classified within the AOB Nitrosospira cluster 3a.2 (D11), had the greatest importance on cumulative N 2 O emissions and its growth significantly depended on soil pH and SOC contents, with higher growth at high pH and low SOC conditions. Collectively, our results demonstrate that alkaline soils with low SOC contents have high N 2 O emissions, which were mainly driven by AOB Nitrosospira cluster 3a.2 (D11). Nitrapyrin can efficiently reduce nitrification-related N 2 O emissions by inhibiting the activity of AOB Nitrosospira cluster 3a.2 (D11). This study advances our understanding of key nitrifiers responsible for high N 2 O emissions in agricultural soils and their controlling factors, and provides vital knowledge for N 2 O emission mitigation in agricultural ecosystems.
