Comparison studies on acoustic behaviour of natural fibre-reinforced polymer matrix composites

In recent decades, innovation has played a role in the growth of many fields, and one such field is acoustics application. Acoustical techniques with natural fibres, fibre-based materials and composite materials may imply a significant environmental responsibility. Such natural fibre-based composites are recognized and proposed as a replacement for synthetic fibre composites for reasons such as being highly secure, consistent, and unaffected by human health and the environment. This paper deals with the acoustic behaviour of three kinds of natural fibres namely coir, banana and palm reinforced in epoxy resin aiming to replace pure plastics or synthetic fibre-reinforced composites with similar acoustic properties. Such attempts make them a relatively greener alternative. The study employs an impedance tube method to experimentally analyze the sound absorption properties of these composites. This method involves measuring the sound absorption coefficient, which is a critical parameter in assessing the acoustic performance of materials. The combination of 75 μm fibre size and 5 wt.% banana fibre results in very high frequencies and a severe reduction in noise coefficient. This is noticed at the maximum sound absorption coefficient of 0.604, which is the highest possible value. The findings also suggest that the experimental combination of 225 μm fibre size and 5 wt.% coir fibre in a sound absorption coefficient of 0.531 while the combination of 75 μm fibre size and 3 wt.% palm fibre yields a sound absorption coefficient of 0.345. These results demonstrate the potential of natural fibre-based composites to offer acoustic properties similar to synthetic fibre composites. In general, the findings indicate that the banana fibre-filled reinforced composite is an outstanding material that has the potential to be utilized in a variety of industries, such as aircraft and mitigation, where the lightweight and acoustic qualities are of major significance.
