Abstract:Liquid metals (LMs) as emerging biomaterials possess unique advantages including their favorable biosafety, high fluidity and excellent electrical and thermal conductivities, thus providing a unique platform for a wide range of biomedical applications ranging from drug delivery, tumor therapy, and bioimaging to biosensors. The structural design and functionalization of LMs endow them with enhanced functions such as enhanced targeting ability and stimuli responsiveness, enabling them to achieve better and even multifunctional synergistic therapeutic effects. Herein, the advantages of LMs in biomedicine are presented. The design of LM‐based biomaterials with different scales ranging from micro/nano‐scale to macro‐scale and various components is explored in‐depth to promote the understanding of structure‐property relationships, guiding their performance optimization and applications. Furthermore, the related advanced progress in the development of LM‐based biomaterials in biomedicine is summarized. Abstract:Conventional biomaterials, such as metals, polymers, composites and ceramics, may not work well when facing certain tough medical challenges. As an alternative, body-temperature liquid metals, such as gallium, or its alloys are recently emerging as new generation functional materials which display many unconventional properties superior to traditional biomaterials, i.e. high fluidity, excellent electrical and thermal conductivities, good biocompatibility, sufficient radiopacity, controllable behaviour, easy manufacture and low cost. This article aims to outline a new biomedical category: liquid metal biomaterials. Representative applications enabled by liquid metal biomaterials from both therapeutic and diagnostic aspects were reviewed. Furthermore, related efforts and perspective for future development of employing liquid metals to resolve modern biomedical tough issues were discussed. With continuous technical progresses and fundamental discoveries, liquid metals are expected to offer more and more outstanding merits as a new class of biomaterials which are promising a generalised way towards resolving biomedical challenges.

Abstract:Liquid metals (LMs) have emerged as a new class of functional materials with attractive characteristics of low melting points and metal properties. Remarkable features, such as biocompatibility, injectability, plasticity, conductivity, and shape transformability, have rendered them as excellent candidates to tackle challenging biomedical issues, such as tumor clinics, tissue engineering, and even nerve connection. Scaling down the droplet size offers more opportunities in surface engineering and functionalization, thus providing broad biomedical scenarios expanding from drug delivery, enhanced bioheat transfer, tumor therapeutics, and bioelectronics to nanorobots. Despite in its infancy stage, a summary about the advancement of LM biomedical nanomaterials is urgently needed. This review aims to highlight the advantages of gallium‐based LM nanoparticles enabled nano‐biomedicine, to summarize the recent synthesis methods with diverse LM compositions, structures and surface modifications, and to introduce their typical state‐of‐the‐art biomedical applications. Challenges and opportunities are also discussed in the end.

Abstract:To date, liquid metals have been widely applied in many fields such as electronics, mechanical engineering and energy. In the last decade, with a better understanding of the physicochemical properties such as low viscosity, good fluidity, high thermal/electrical conductivity and good biocompatibility, gallium and gallium-based low-melting-point (near or below physiological temperature) alloys have attracted considerable attention in bio-related applications. This tutorial review introduces the common performances of liquid metals, highlights their featured properties, as well as summarizes various state-of-the-art bio-applications involving carriers for drug delivery, molecular imaging, cancer therapy and biomedical devices. Challenges for the clinical translation of liquid metals are also discussed.

Abstract:Liquid metals (LMs) possess tremendous potential applications in flexible electronic devices, heat flow management, and smart actuators. Splitting the bulk LMs into microspheres is of great significance to fabricate free-standing and microscale LM-based functional materials and devices. However, it is difficult to disperse the bulk LMs into microspheres because of their large surface tension and high density. In this work, the capillary-based microfluidic chip is employed to continuously and automatically generate LM microspheres in a large scale. The capillary-based microfluidic fabrication is universally applicable in ionic aqueous solution, hydrophobic solution, and the polymeric aqueous solution. The precise size control of LM microspheres can be easily realized by the co-flowing configuration in the microchannels. The coefficient of size variation of monodispersed LM microspheres can be controlled to as low as 0.47%. The free-standing LM microspheres can be used as functional microelectrodes within a wide temperature range from -19.8 to 20 °C and to fabricate tunable integrated circuits with different output powers. Most importantly, the LM microspheres exhibit photothermal property, which is used to make the optical sensor with linear response and to conduct the solar energy harvesting. The capillary-based microfluidic fabrication of LM microspheres provides a facile and templated methodology for processing bulk LMs into microscale units. The LM microspheres with excellent electrical conductivity and photothermal property hold great promise for the development of miniature soft electronics, light-driven actuators, and energy conversion medium.

Abstract:Abstract Until now, significant healthcare challenges and growing urgent clinical requirements remain incompletely addressed by presently available biomedical materials. This is due to their inadequate mechanical compatibility, suboptimal physical and chemical properties, susceptibility to immune rejection, and concerns about long-term biological safety. From an alternative, liquid metal (LM) opens a promising class of biomaterials with unique advantages like biocompatibility, flexibility, excellent electrical conductivity, and ease of functionalization. However, despite the unique advantages and successful explorations of LM in biomedical fields, widespread clinical translations and applications of LM-based medical products remain limited. This article summarizes the current status and future prospects of LM biomaterials, interprets their applications in healthcare, medical imaging, bone repair, nerve interface, and tumor therapy etc. Opportunities to translate LM materials into medicine and obstacles encountered in practices were digested. Following that, we outline a blueprint for LM clinics, emphasizing their potential in making new-generation artificial organs. Lastly, the core challenges of LM biomaterials in clinical translation, including bio-safety, material stability, and ethical concerns are discussed. Overall, the current progress, translational medicine bottlenecks, and perspectives of LM biomaterials signify their immense potential to drive future medical breakthroughs and thus open up novel avenues for the coming clinical practices.

Abstract:Magnetically responsive soft smart materials have garnered significant academic attention due to their flexibility, remote controllability, and reconfigurability. However, traditional soft materials used in the construction of these magnetically responsive systems typically exhibit low density and poor thermal and electrical conductivities. These limitations result in suboptimal performance in applications such as medical radiography, high-performance electronic devices, and thermal management. To address these challenges, magnetically responsive gallium-based liquid metals have emerged as promising alternatives. In this review, we summarize the methodologies for achieving magnetically responsive liquid metals, including the integration of magnetic agents into the liquid metal matrix and the utilization of induced Lorentz forces. We then provide a comprehensive discussion of the key physicochemical properties of these materials and the factors influencing them. Additionally, we explore the advanced and potential applications of magnetically responsive liquid metals. Finally, we discuss the current challenges in this field and present an outlook on future developments and research directions.

Abstract:This review is focused on the basic properties, production, functionalization, cytotoxicity, and biomedical applications of liquid metal nanoparticles (LMNPs), with a focus on particles of the size ranging from tens to hundreds of nanometers. Applications, including cancer therapy, medical imaging, and pathogen treatment are discussed. LMNPs share similar properties to other metals, such as photothermal conversion ability and a propensity to form surface oxides. Compared to many other metals, especially mercury, the cytotoxicity of gallium is low and is considered by many reports to be safe when applied in vivo. Recent advances in exploring different grafting molecules are reported herein, as surface functionalization is essential to enhance photothermal therapeutic effects of LMNPs or to facilitate drug delivery. This review also outlines properties of LMNPs that can be exploited in making medical imaging contrast agents, ion channel regulators, and anti-pathogenic agents. Finally, a foresight is offered, exemplifying underexplored knowledge and highlighting the research challenges faced by LMNP science and technology in expanding into applications potentially yielding clinical advances.

Abstract:Liquid metals are arousing increasing interests among many challenging biomedical and healthcare areas, owing to their exceptional merits such as outstanding fluidic behavior, excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, tunable mechanical property, high plasticity, low vapor pressure, and favorable biocompatibility. Recent endeavors indicate that liquid metals have quickly become a new generation of functional biomaterials in both fundamental research and practical applications. Especially, their uniquely low viscosity and water-like flowability as metals in liquid state enable many unconventional biomedical operational modes through the easy-going injection way. This would mold a highly beneficial technology with numerous advantages distinguishing from those traditional open surgeries. This review is dedicated to systematically draft a new area of liquid metal enabled injectable biomedical technology based on their unique characteristics, summarize the recent representative developments and the associated biomedical progress. The state-of-art materials, technologies, and devices will be interpreted. Scientific opportunities and challenges will also be discussed. As emerging injectable biomaterials, the fundamentals, technology, and potential applications of the liquid metals would endow injectable operations to fulfill urgently biomedical demand as well as stimulate further endeavors along this critical direction. Abstract:In recent years, liquid metals (LMs) have garnered increasing attention for their expanded applicability, and wide application potential in various research fields. Among them, gallium (Ga)-based LMs exhibit remarkable analytical performance in electrical and optical sensors, thanks to their excellent conductivity, large surface area, biocompatibility, small bandgap, and high elasticity. This review comprehensively summarizes the latest advancements in functional micro-/nanostructured Ga-based LMs for biochemical sensing and imaging applications. Firstly, the electrical, optical, and biocompatible features of Ga-based LM micro-/nanoparticles are briefly discussed, along with the manufacturing and functionalization processes. Subsequently, we demonstrate the utilization of Ga-based LMs in biochemical sensing techniques, encompassing electrochemistry, electrochemiluminescence, optical sensing techniques, and various biomedical imaging. Lastly, we present an insightful perspective on promising research directions and remaining challenges in LM-based biochemical sensing and imaging applications.

Abstract:Abstract Liquid metals (LMs) and hydrogels each represent advanced frontiers in emerging biomaterials and biomedicine. Hydrogels as a class of three-dimensional polymer networks formed by hydrophilic materials have broadly tunable physicochemical properties and high similarity with biological tissues. LMs, which possess liquid and metallic properties at normal temperature and pressure, are a new type of conductive material that has gained increasing attention. When integrated into hydrogel polymers, LMs act exceptionally as an ‘active’ filler and/or responsive element. The presence of LMs in these composites endows the LM hydrogel composites (LMHGs) with intriguing properties such as self-healing, flexibility, responsiveness, and thermal and electrical conductivity, achieving enhanced and even multifunctional synergistic effects. These properties significantly broaden their applications in various fields (figure 1). This review introduces the categories and featured properties of LMs, including biocompatibility, synthesis methods, surface modifications, response behaviors, and reversible deformation. Advanced biomedical applications of LMHGs involving medical electronics, biomedical engineering (BME), and soft electronics actuators are emphatically summarized. According to the integration mode of LMs and hydrogels, the biomedical soft electronics devices based on microfluidic technology and surface patterning technology as well as their properties are introduced in detail, respectively. The applications of LMHGs in BME mainly include tumor embolotherapy, contrast agent, single-cell amber, wound healing, and drug delivery system. Additionally, although in their infancy stage, the excellent performances of LMHGs described in this review contribute to the development of soft actuators and robots in the future. Finally, the present opportunities and challenges associated with the biological applications of LMHGs are also discussed. And, future development directions are proposed.

Abstract:Liquid metal, as a novel material, has become ideal for the fabrication of flexible conductive fibers and has shown great potential in the field of biomedical sensing. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the unique properties of liquid metals such as gallium-based alloys, including their excellent electrical conductivity, mobility, and biocompatibility. These properties make liquid metals ideal for the fabrication of flexible and malleable biosensors. The article explores common preparation methods for liquid metal conductive fibers, such as internal liquid metal filling, surface printing with liquid metal, and liquid metal coating techniques, and their applications in health monitoring, neural interfaces, and wearable devices. By summarizing and analyzing the current research, this paper aims to reveal the current status and challenges of liquid metal conductive fibers in the field of biosensors and to look forward to their development in the future, which will provide valuable references and insights for researchers in the field of biomedical engineering.

Abstract:<p>Liquid metals (LM) have shown a very broad development prospect over the past decades. This review article focuses on the latest research dedicated to liquid metal materials and their applications in five significant areas: stretchable conductive composite, intelligent sensing electronic skin, catalysis, 3D printing material, and driving machines. The fabrication, specific properties and application of stretchable liquid metal‐polymer composites that can be used as self‐healing materials have been summarized. Liquid metal deposition printing technology, liquid phase 3D printing, suspension 3D printing technology, micro‐contact printing technology, and in vivo 3D printing molding technology have also been reviewed. Furthermore, the application of liquid metal catalyst in aldehyde reaction, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis have been discussed. We have shown that electricity, magnetism, sound, light and heat could stimulate the movement of liquid metal. Through this comprehensive overview of the latest research, the main practical application, development, and mechanism of liquid metal were summarized and described. The future development of liquid metal technology was prospected, thus providing a strong basic research support for the further development of LM materials and their applications.</p>

Light-driven liquid metal nanotransformers for biomedical theranostics

Abstract:Room temperature liquid metals (LMs) represent a class of emerging multifunctional materials with attractive novel properties. Here, we show that photopolymerized LMs present a unique nanoscale capsule structure characterized by high water dispersibility and low toxicity. We also demonstrate that the LM nanocapsule generates heat and reactive oxygen species under biologically neutral near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. Concomitantly, NIR laser exposure induces a transformation in LM shape, destruction of the nanocapsules, contactless controlled release of the loaded drugs, optical manipulations of a microfluidic blood vessel model and spatiotemporal targeted marking for X-ray-enhanced imaging in biological organs and a living mouse. By exploiting the physicochemical properties of LMs, we achieve effective cancer cell elimination and control of intercellular calcium ion flux. In addition, LMs display a photoacoustic effect in living animals during NIR laser treatment, making this system a powerful tool for bioimaging.

Abstract:Liquid metals (LMs) such as gallium or bismuth based alloys are emerging as new functional materials with rather unique physical or chemical behaviors. They are generally safe and non‐toxic, have high boiling points, reflectivities, good thermal and electrical conductivities, intrinsic flexibility, fluidity, self‐healing capability and remain in liquid state at room temperature. However, the further applications of LMs are limited by their single‐color physical appearance, such as working in the situations with imposed stringent requirements for color and aesthetics. Recently, the color and fluorescence functionalization of liquid metals have overcome many conventional technical bottlenecks and opened significant potential for emerging applications in numerous fields owing to their rich colors and unique liquid structure. In this review, the recent developments in the optical properties, color and fluorescence effects of liquid metals are comprehensively investigated. The synthesis, structures, properties, chromogenic mechanisms, and potential photoelectric applications of colorful liquid metals are systematically analyzed and compared. The effectiveness and characteristics of colorful liquid metals induced by coating, mixing, compounding, surface modification, external stimuli are provided, aiming to establish a potential system for the synthesis and practices of colorful liquid metals. Finally, the challenges and prospects in the field have also been identified and explained to preferably guide further scientific and technical researches in the coming time . Abstract:Liquid metal (LM) and its alloys are emerging as promising materials for biosensing applications due to their attractive physical and chemical properties. LM‐based biosensors present a novel strategy in biosensing, particularly for wearables and human health monitoring. Promising physiological and biochemical sensing applications of LM such as the detection of biomolecules, chemical compounds, and gases are highlighted and summarized. Biosensors are analytical tools for monitoring various parameters related to living organisms, such as humans and plants. Liquid metals (LMs) have emerged as a promising new material for biosensing applications in recent years. LMs have attractive physical and chemical properties such as deformability, high thermal and electrical conductivity, low volatility, and low viscosity. LM‐based biosensors represent a new strategy in biosensing particularly for wearable and real‐time sensing. While early demonstrations of LM biosensors focus on monitoring physical parameters such as strain, motion, and temperature, recent examples show LM can be an excellent sensing material for biochemical and biomolecular detection as well. In this review, the recent progress of LM‐based biosensors for personalized healthcare and disease monitoring via both physical and biochemical signaling is survey. It is started with a brief introduction of the fundamentals of biosensors and LMs, followed by a discussion of different mechanisms by which LM can transduce biological or physiological signals. Next, it is reviewed example LM‐based biosensors that have been used in real biological systems, ranging from real‐time on‐skin physiological monitoring to target‐specific biochemical detection. Finally, the challenges and future directions of LM‐integrated biosensor platforms is discussed.

By virtue of characteristics of well controlled wettability, high electrical conductivity, low cost and easy operation, liquid metal materials have been developed into above area in recent years. In this chapter, representative strategies to develop liquid metals as implantable or injectable medical electronics were introduced and discussed.
Liquid metal injected from interstitial channels for inhibiting subcutaneous hepatoma growth and improving MRI/MAT image contrast

Abstract:Objective: Liquid metal (LM) nowadays is considered a new biomedical material for medical treatment. The most common application of LM in medical therapy is taking LM as a carrier for oncology therapeutics. However, the feasibility and direct effect of LM in tumor treatment are still unknown, and how to delineate the negative resection margin (NRM) of the tumor is also a crucial problem in surgery. We aimed to inject LM into interstitial channels of extremities of mice to overlay the surface of the primary tumor to investigate the effect of LM on inhibiting tumor growth and highlight the NRM of the tumor. Methods: In this study, all 50 BALB/c-nude female mice were used to construct the transplanted HepG2-type hepatocellular carcinoma model. One week after the establishment of the model, the mice were divided into three groups, named LM group, PBS group and Control group by injecting different liquid materials into the forelimb interstitial channel of the mice. T2WI image on MRI and Magneto-acoustic tomography (MAT) were used to show the distribution of LM and PBS in vivo. The group comparisons of tumor growth and blood tests were evaluated by one-way ANOVA and post-hoc analysis. And the biocompatibility of LM to BALB/c nude mice was evaluated by histopathological analysis of LM group and control group. Results: The volume change ratio of tumor was significantly lower in LM group than in PBS and Control group after 10 days of grouping. Compared with PBS and Control group, the main indexes of blood tests in LM group were significantly lower and close to normal level. In addition, the distribution of LM in vivo could be clearly observed under T2WI anatomic images and the crossprofile of the tumor in MAT. LM also has a obvious contrast in MRI T2WI and enhanced the amplitude of imaging signal in MAT. Conclusion: LM may inhibit the growth of transplanted hepatoma tumor through tumor encapsulation. In vivo, tumor imaging and LM distribution imaging were achieved by MRI T2WI, which verified that LM injected with interstitial injection made the NRM of tumor more prominent and had the potential of being MRI contrast agent. Abstract:Abstract Gallium‐based liquid metals (LMs) are a group of metal materials that are in liquid state at room temperature. Their unique physiochemical properties such as fluidity, conductivity, and interfacial properties with other materials have presented great potentials and wide applications. Specifically, the interactions between gallium‐based LMs and some common but important transition metals (TMs) have not only enabled a series of intriguing phenomena but also provided valuable strategies or functional materials in soft robotics, devices, flexible electronics, addictive manufacturing, biomedical engineering and therapies, and other fields. The chemical mechanisms including the galvanic corrosion, infiltration, intermetallic compound formation should play vital roles within these interactions. Hereby the combining the LMs and TMs by alloying or physically mixing may offer a platform to develop novel and multifunctional materials system. To acquire a comprehensive understanding of those interactions as well as to inspire the researches for multifunctional materials design and applications, this article reviews the researches on the combination of LMs and TMs, discusses the characteristics, the mechanisms, and their applications especially in electronics, smart materials, and biomedicine. The main challenges and future research outlook are also discussed.

Abstract:Flexible sensors that conformably attach to the soft curvature, can provide precise and sensitive signals for applications of soft robots, wearable devices and human-machine interaction. The soft and flexible features are especially featured in human-related activities, such as human healthcare monitoring, detection of physiological signals and disease diagnosis. Recently, liquid metals have emerged as new generation of function materials to solve complicated biomedical problems. With distinct merits of high conductivity and favorable fluidity, liquid metals are considered as extraordinary candidates among numerous flexible conductive materials. The fluidic nature enables liquid metals with unique injectable and self-healing properties and further inspires many revolutionized electronic patterning techniques. This chapter is dedicated to reviewing liquid metal enabled flexible sensors for biomedical applications, including the featured properties of liquid metals, principles as sensors, emerging fabrication techniques and the typical applications in biomedicine.
