Abstract:Background Missed care has negative consequences for patients, directly affecting the quality of nursing care and patient safety. Aim This study investigated the effect of missed care on the nursing image perceived by patients and their trust relationships with nurses. Methods This descriptive and correlational study was conducted in all inpatient wards of a hospital in southern Türkiye. The sample consisted of 200 patients. Data were collected using a patient information form, the MISSCARE Survey‐Patient, the Nursing Image Scale (NIS), and the Trust in Nurses Scale (TNS). The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (for Windows 25.0). The study adhered to the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines. Findings Participants had a mean MISSCARE Survey‐Patient, TNS, and NIS score of 2.09 ± 0.53, 23.48 ± 5.01, and 71.52 ± 6.75, respectively. There was a moderate negative correlation between MISSCARE Survey‐Patient and TNS scores. There was a weak negative correlation between MISSCARE Survey‐Patient and NIS scores. Moreover, there was a strong positive correlation between NIS and TNS scores. Discussion MISSCARE Survey‐Patient total scores vary due to the imbalance in the number of nurses and the complexity of their tasks. Poor quality of care and incomplete care undermine the image of nursing and negatively affect the trust relationship between patients and nurses. Conclusions Nursing image and trust in nurses decreases as patient–nurse communication and basic care interventions are skipped. Implications for nursing policy Inadequate care can have a detrimental effect on the nursing image and erode patient–nurse trust relationships. Therefore, there is a pressing need for ongoing review and enhancement of nursing education, policy, and practice to elevate the quality of care provided. Further research utilizing objective staff measures and outcome assessments, along with gathering primary data directly from patients, is essential to substantiate the assertion that missed care significantly influences patient outcomes.

Abstract:Aim: To compare presenteeism levels among three samples of nurses and to identify the relationship between presenteeism and sociodemographic and professional characteristics. Background: Presenteeism (going to work ill) is a phenomenon studied from different perspectives, and it has become especially important during the current COVID-19 outbreak; its connection to high healthcare costs, patient safety breaches and negative nurse well-being has been proved. Introduction: The nursing profession is particularly associated with caring for the culture of teamwork, loyalty to colleagues and professional identity. This condition enhances the 'super nurse phenomenon', even though nurses do not feel physically and psychologically able to work. Methods: A multicentre, cross-sectional study was conducted in three different country contexts: Oviedo (Spain), Porto (Portugal) and São Paulo (Brazil). Nurses performing functions in hospitals and primary health care were enrolled. Informed consent and data collection questionnaires were hand delivered. The Stanford Presenteeism Scale-6 was applied. Results: A total of 659 nurses participated. Portuguese nurses showed greater prevalence of presenteeism, followed by Brazilian and Spanish nurses. Younger nurses with less professional experience presented lower levels of presenteeism but greater psychological commitment. Male participants showed lower capacity to complete work when ill than female participants. Conclusions: Age and length of professional experience proved to be significant predictors of total presenteeism, although only professional experience revealed statistical significance in the adjusted model. Implications for nursing and health policy: The knowledge of this phenomenon among nurses highlights the need for the development of strategies in the curriculum of nursing students and organizations. Resilience and ergonomic training should be applied in the training programmes of the students and reinforced by the health centre managers. It is essential that healthcare systems design worksite wellness programmes that pursue greater physical and mental well-being for healthcare professionals.
Unveiling missed nursing care: a comprehensive examination of neglected responsibilities and practice environment challenges

Abstract:Background: The global variable of missed nursing care and practice environment are widely recognized as two crucial contextual factors that significantly impact the quality of nursing care. This study assessed the current status of missed nursing care and the characteristics of the nursing practice environment in Iran. Additionally, this study aimed to explore the relationship between these two variables. Methods: We conducted an across-sectional study from May 2021 to January 2022 in which we investigated 255 nurses. We utilized the Missed Nursing Care Survey, the Nursing Work Index-Practice Environment Scale, and a demographic questionnaire to gather the necessary information. We used the Shapiro‒Wilk test, Pearson correlation coefficient test, and multiple linear regression test in SPSS version 20 for the data analyses. Results: According to the present study, 41% of nurses regularly or often overlooked certain aspects of care, resulting in an average score of 32.34 ± 7.43 for missed nursing care. It is worth noting that attending patient care conferences, providing patient bathing and skin care, and assisting with toileting needs were all significant factors contributing to the score. The overall practice environment was unfavorable, with a mean score of 2.25 ± 0.51. Interestingly, 'nursing foundations for quality of care' was identified as the sole predictor of missed nursing care, with a β value of -0.22 and a p-value of 0.036. Conclusions: This study identified attending patient care interdisciplinary team meetings and delivering basic care promptly as the most prevalent instances of missed nursing care. Unfortunately, the surveyed hospitals exhibited an undesirable practice environment, which correlated with a higher incidence of missed nursing care. These findings highlight the crucial impact of nurses' practice environment on care delivery. Addressing the challenges in the practice environment is essential for reducing instances of missed care, improving patient outcomes, and enhancing overall healthcare quality.
Explaining the consequences of missed nursing care from the perspective of nurses: a qualitative descriptive study in Iran

Abstract:Abstract Background Missed nursing care is a global challenge that can have many consequences. Knowing the experiences of clinical nurses can be helpful. Therefore, this study was conducted to explain the experiences of Iranian nurses regarding the consequences of missed nursing care. Methods This qualitative descriptive study was conducted with a content analysis approach. Sampling was done by the purposeful sampling method and continued until data saturation. Data were collected by in-depth semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis and Graneheim and Lundman’s method. MAXQDA version 10 software was used for data management. Results The participants included 14 nurses with a mean age of 38.7 ± 7.7 years. The data were classified into three categories: patient-related outcomes, nurse-related outcomes, and organization-related outcomes. These categories included nine subcategories entitled "moral distress", "job dissatisfaction", " decreased quality of nursing care "," patient dissatisfaction ","adverse events"," absenteeism ","intention to leave and subsequent turnover", "decreased hospital credit", and "increased hospital costs". Conclusion Missed nursing care can have adverse consequences for the patients, nurses, and organizations. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt management strategies such as providing sufficient manpower and increasing nurses' job satisfaction to reduce the amount of missed nursing care. Further studies are needed to explain the predictors of the missed nursing care consequences.

Relationship between missed nursing care and patients' trust in nurses and satisfaction with care: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Missed nursing care is a global health problem that can have negative consequences for patients, nurses, and healthcare institutions. The purpose of the research is to determine the relationship of missed nursing care with patients' trust in nurses and satisfaction with care. A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 350 patients treated at the cardiology clinic of a university hospital. Data were collected using the MISSCARE Survey-Patient, the Trust in Nurses Scale (TNS), and the Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale (NSNS). There was a strong positive relationship between trust in nursing and satisfaction with care. Additionally, missed care in communication and basic care had a negative relationship with trust in nursing and satisfaction with care (p < 0.001). The multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the communication subscale score was the best negative predictor of trust in nurses and satisfaction with care. The results of this research indicate a deficiency in adequately addressing all nursing care activities. The failure to meet nurse-patient communication needs is the most important missed care factor that negatively affects satisfaction with care and trust in nurses.

Abstract:Aim To examine the association between nurses' insomnia, presenteeism and care left undone and explore the mediating effect of presenteeism on the relationship between insomnia and care left undone among nurses in acute care hospitals, applying a dynamic model of presenteeism and absenteeism. Design A cross‐sectional design. Methods A secondary data analysis was conducted using online survey data collected in January 2023. Participants were 1154 registered nurses who provided direct nursing care to patients in tertiary or general hospitals (hospitals with 300 or more beds) in South Korea. Poisson regression analysis was used to examine the association between nurses' insomnia, presenteeism and care left undone. Generalised structural equation modelling was performed to examine the mediating effect of presenteeism on the relationship between insomnia and care left undone. Results The prevalence of insomnia was 15.3%. More than half of the participants (63.7%) reported experiencing presenteeism in the past 4 weeks. All reported at least one nursing care left undone during their last shift. Insomnia and presenteeism were positively associated with care left undone, and presenteeism mediated the relationship between insomnia and care left undone among nurses in acute care hospitals. Conclusion Nurses experienced insomnia and presenteeism, related to higher rates of care left undone. Nurses' insomnia had a direct effect on care left undone and an indirect effect through presenteeism. Implications for the Profession Nurse managers and administrators need to make greater efforts to reduce insomnia and presenteeism among nurses, thereby reducing care left undone and improving patient safety in acute care settings. Impact Nurse managers and administrators should consider proactive interventions to address nurses' insomnia and foster a workplace with healthy systems and culture to reduce sleep disturbance and presenteeism, which can effectively decrease care left undone. Abstract:Background: Determination of the factors affecting missed nursing care and the impact of ethical leadership is important in improving the quality of care. Aim: This study aims to determine the missed nursing care and its relationship with perceived ethical leadership. Research design: A cross-sectional study. Participants and research context: The sample consisted of 233 nurses, of whom 92.7% were staff nurses and 7.3% were charge nurses, who work in three different hospitals in Turkey. The study data were collected using a personal and professional characteristics data form, the Missed Nursing Care Survey, and the Ethical Leadership Scale. Ethical considerations: The study was approved by the non-interventional ethics committee of Dokuz Eylül University Ethics Committee for Noninvasive Clinical Studies. All participants’ written and verbal consents were obtained. Findings: The most missed nursing care practices were ambulation, attending interdisciplinary care conferences, and discharge planning. According to the logistic regression analysis, sex, the number of patients that the nurse is in charge of giving care, the number of patients discharged in the last shift, and satisfaction with the team were determined as factors affecting missed care. No significant relationship was found between ethical leadership and missed nursing care (p > 0.05), and a weak but significant relationship was found between the clarification of duties/roles subscale and missed nursing care (r = −0.136, p < 0.05). Discussion: Ethical leaders should collaborate with policy-makers at an institutional level to particularly achieve teamwork that is effective in the provision of care, to control missed basic nursing care, and to organize working hours and at the country level to determine roles and to increase the workforce. Conclusion: The results of this study contribute to the international literature on the most common type of missed nursing care, its reasons, and the relationship between the missed care and ethical leadership in a different cultural context.

Abstract:Introduction This descriptive cross-sectional study describes missed nursing care, quality of care, and patient safety rated by nursing staff in emergency departments. Required patient care that is omitted or delayed (missed nursing care) is associated with poorer quality of care and increased risk for adverse events, but studies are scarce in the emergency setting. Methods Emergency registered nurses and nursing assistants (N=126) at 2 Swedish emergency departments participated in the study. The MISSCARE survey – Swedish version was used for data collection. Results Emergency nursing staff assessed that nursing care is frequently missed in the emergency department. More than half of the 24 nursing care items were reported as missed by over 50% of the participants, and registered nurses rated most items significantly higher compared to nursing assistants. Half of the nursing staff perceived quality of care to be good, but nearly the same proportion perceived patient safety as poor. Registered nurses viewed both quality and safety worse than nursing assistants. Discussion The present study found very high levels of missed nursing care in most nursing items. Results indicate that nursing staff in emergency departments need to prioritize between the tasks and that some tasks may not be relevant in the context. The emergency setting focuses primarily on identifying signs of urgency, assessing patients, performing interventions, and diagnostics. However, even items that seemed to be prioritized, such as reassessment of vital signs, had a surprisingly high level of missed nursing care in comparison to in-hospital wards.

Abstract:Context: An important factor that significantly affects missed nursing care is the nursing work environment. Additionally, it significantly impacts the recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals and indirectly affects the standard of nursing care. Aim: To identify nurses' perception of the professional practice environment, identify types and reasons for missed nursing care, and find the relationship between nurses' perceptions of the professional practice environment and missed nursing care during the Hajj season. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was carried out at seven hospitals in Makkah region. A convenience sample of 463 registered nurse who has at least one year of nursing experience and working in inpatient units was included in this study. Data was collected through an online questionnaire. It included patients' demographic data, the revised professional practice environment scale, and missed nursing care assessment questionnaire. Results: The result of this study reveal that the mean scores of the professional practice environment and its subscales were 3.56±0.46, indicating a favorable environment. Furthermore, it was found that the overall missed nursing care among the studied nurses was 1.56±0.65, which indicates low missed nursing care. The highest reason for missed nursing care was the inadequate staff (2.85±1.12), supplies/equipment not functioning properly when needed (2.74±1.07), and not being available when needed (2.70±1.10). The professional practice environment statistically significantly negatively correlated with missed nursing care (r=-0.32, p=0.000). Conclusion: Missed nursing care in hospitals can be reduced by improving the professional practice environment. The study recommends that the hospital and nursing administrators consider keeping good practice environments for nurses to prevent missed care activities and potentially enhance patient outcomes in nursing units.

Abstract:Presenteeism refers to the behavior of people who turn up for work despite complaints of ill health that should prompt rest and absence from work. The high incidence of presenteeism in the nurse population has been extensively investigated using self-reported methods to explore its effects on individual outcomes. However, few studies have examined nurse presenteeism using an “other's” perspective to verify self-reported information. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the prevalence, consequences, and causes of presenteeism in Chinese nurses from the perspectives of nurses and chief nurses. A sample of 481 nurses and 282 chief nurses from five hospitals in Henan Province, China, took part in this cross-sectional study. Participants completed the Sickness Presenteeism Questionnaire, Social Productivity Loss Questionnaire, and Causes of Nurse Presenteeism Questionnaire. The human capital method was used to estimate the monetary loss because of nurse presenteeism. We found that 94.25 and 82.08% of nurses experienced presenteeism in the past 6 months from the perspective of nurses and chief nurses, respectively. The annual monetary loss was estimated to be ¥4.38 billion and ¥2.88 billion based on the presenteeism reports from nurses and chief nurses, respectively. Workload, leave system, and conscientiousness are the main reasons for nurse presenteeism, and financial need is another important reason that is likely overlooked by chief nurses. This study provides a foundation for future research by presenting new knowledge about the prevalence, consequences, and causes of presenteeism in Chinese nurses. The findings emphasize the need for nursing managers and nursing departments to establish policy systems around paid sick leave, workload, and communication with managers to reduce nurse presenteeism and the subsequent socio-economic financial losses.

Abstract:Background & Aim: Missed nursing care can reduce nursing care quality by eliminating or delaying any aspect of the patient’s necessary nursing care. Teamwork has been a solution to improve the quality of care and safety of patients. The present study was conducted to determine the relationship between missed nursing care and emergency nurses’ teamwork in the educational-medical centers affiliated to Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2019. Methods & Materials: This cross-sectional study is predictive correlational in nature. It was conducted on 213 nurses working in the emergency department who were selected based on the census method from March 2018 to December 2019. The self-report data were collected using Nursing Teamwork Survey and Missed Nursing Care questionnaires. The data were analyzed through conducting ANOVA, t-test, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis in SPSS version 16. Results: The mean score of missed nursing care in the emergency nurses was 2.25±0.65, and the nurses’ average teamwork was 3.53±0.55. There was a statistically significant yet inverse correlation between teamwork and missed nursing care (p<0.001) (r= -0.29). The determination coefficient of the multiple linear regression modeling was used to predict the missed nursing care based on the total teamwork score indicated that 14% of the missed nursing care was explained under the influence of independent variables. Conclusion: Due to the inverse relationship between teamwork and missed nursing care, it is necessary to design and plan training courses to further enhance the nurses’ ability to perform teamwork and collaborative work.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Missed nursing care occurs globally and the consequences are severe for the patients. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and cause of missed nursing care, and the relationship between registered nurses' and nursing assistants' perceptions of missed nursing care, in a surgical care context. Method A quantitative study was performed using the MISSCARE survey, measuring missed nursing care and associated reasons, in three surgical wards with registered nurses and nursing assistants as the participants (n=118). The MISSCARE survey also covers background data such as job satisfaction and intention to leave. The response rate was 88%. Result Nursing care rated to be missed the most were ‘attending interdisciplinary care conferences’, ‘turning patient every 2 h’, ‘ambulation 3 times per day or as ordered’, and ‘mouth care’. Registered nurses rated more missed nursing care than nursing assistants. The uppermost reasons for missed nursing care were ‘inadequate number of staff’ and ‘unexpected rise in patient volume and/or acuity on the unit’. Almost every fourth staff member (24.6%, n=29) had the intention to leave within a year in the present department. Discussion Missed nursing care, in combination with a high number of staff intending to leave their employment, poses a hazard to patient safety. Registered nurses reported more missed care compared with the nursing assistants. These findings support a warranted investment in nursing within the organisation. The results can be used to form strategies to reduce nurse attrition and optimise competence utilisation, and to achieve safe person-centered fundamental care.

Abstract:Background Nurses dispense direct care in a wide variety of settings and are considered the backbone of the health care system. They often work long hours, face emotional stress, and are at a high risk of psychosocial and somatic illnesses. Nurses sometimes fall sick but work regardless, leading to presenteeism and subsequent risks to quality of care and patient safety due to the increased likelihood of patients falling, medication errors, and staff-to-patient disease transmission. Objective This study aims to understand presenteeism among frontline nurses and nurse managers in acute, primary, and long-term health care settings and to contribute to the development of future interventional studies and recommendations. Methods A qualitative study based on online focus group discussions will explore the perceptions of, attitudes to, and experiences with presenteeism among frontline nurses and nurse managers. Using a pilot-tested interview guide, 8 focus group discussions will involve nurses working in acute care hospitals, primary care settings, and long-term residential care facilities in Switzerland’s French-speaking region and Portugal’s Center region. The data collected will be examined using a content analysis approach via NVivo 12 QSR International software. Results The University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland’s School of Health Sciences and the Polytechnic of Leiria’s School of Health Sciences in Portugal have both approved funding for the study. The research protocol has been approved by ethics committees in both countries. Study recruitment commenced in February 2021. The results of the data analysis are expected by September 2021. Conclusions This present study aims to gain more insight into the dilemmas facing nurses as a result of all causes of presenteeism among frontline nurses and nurse managers in different health care settings. The researchers will prepare manuscripts on the study’s findings, publish them in relevant peer-reviewed journals, exhibit them in poster presentations, and give oral presentations at appropriate academic and nonscientific conferences. Regarding further knowledge transfer, researchers will engage with stakeholders to craft messages focused on the needs of nurses and nurse managers and on disseminating our research findings to deal with the issue of nursing presenteeism. Abstract:Aim To examine the relationship between missed nursing care and conscientious intelligence. Background Missed nursing care is a globally common patient safety issue that threatens quality nursing care. Current studies mainly focus on the relationship between missed nursing care and external factors such as nurse, unit and hospital characteristics. However, internal factors, such as the conscientious intelligence of nurses, are also very important for missed nursing care. Moreover, the relationship between missed nursing care and conscientious intelligence has not been examined so far. This study will contribute to filling this gap in the literature. Methods This is a descriptive correlational study. The study sample consisted of 514 nurses working in a city in the southeastern region of Türkiye, reached by convenience sampling method. Study data were collected between 30 January and 30 June 2021. Descriptive statistics, difference statistics, Pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed. Results Nurses missed nursing care at an occasional level (1.66 ± 0.63), and their conscientious intelligence score was high (131.26 ± 19.24). Conscientious intelligence alone accounted for 10.6% of the variance in missed nursing care. As nurses' conscientious intelligence levels increase, the level of missed nursing care decreases. Gender, education level, satisfaction with being a nurse and patient‐to‐nurse ratios had a statistically significant effect on missed nursing care scores. Conclusion Missed nursing care decreased as nurses' conscientious intelligence increased. Although nurses need to be knowledgeable and competent in caregiving, it is also necessary to consider their conscientious intelligence in patient care. Implications for nursing and health policy Organizations and nurse managers could improve nursing care by implementing strategies to increase nurses' conscientious intelligence. For this, they would need to encourage nurses to receive training on sensitivity, awareness, ethical decision‐making and ethical sensitivity. Moreover, nurse managers should be role models and leaders in compliance with personal and professional values and ethical standards to improve nursing care.

Abstract:Aims To compare nurses' and patients' reports of missed nursing care, explore patients' perspectives and utilise these insights to elucidate discrepancies or congruence between perceptions. Design A descriptive mixed‐methods design combining quantitative (questionnaires) and qualitative (semi‐structured interviews) methods. Methods In the quantitative phase, 143 nurses and 643 patients completed the MISSCARE and MISSCARE‐Patient surveys. Correlations between their total missed care scores were examined. In the qualitative phase, 68 patients participated in semi‐structured interviews analysed using thematic analysis. Results The correlation between nurses' and patients' perceptions of missed nursing care was nonsignificant. Qualitative findings revealed three themes: (1) patients' need to preserve individuality; (2) most patients attributed missed care to systemic factors, while some attributed it to nurses' attitudes and (3) emotional responses varied from empathetic understanding, inadvertently enabling more missed care, to frustration and assertiveness to ensure receiving necessary care. Conclusions This study reveals a significant discrepancy between nurses' and patients' perceptions of missed care. Patient perspectives offer insights into this misalignment, highlighting differences in care priorities and role understanding. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care Enhancing nurse–patient communication and patient empowerment are crucial. Healthcare institutions should integrate patient feedback into quality initiatives, create supportive work environments and foster a patient‐centred care culture. Effectively marketing nurses' expertise and implementing strategies to manage patient assertiveness are essential. Impact This study addresses the discrepancy in perceptions of missed nursing care between nurses and patients. It reveals how patients' care priorities and attributions influence their experience of missed care. Findings will impact healthcare policymakers, nursing educators and hospital administrators, informing strategies to improve care quality, patient satisfaction and nurse work environments across healthcare settings. Missed nursing care in highly specialized hospitals: A Mexican case study

Abstract:Objective: To assess the status of missed nursing care and the reasons for its occurrence in a highly specialised public hospital in Mexico. Materials and methods: An observational cross-sectional analysis with data collected from January to June 2019 at the National Institute of Rehabilitation Luis Guillermo Ibarra Ibarra in Mexico City. We assessed missed care and its causes by conducting the MISSCARE survey among 116 nursing professionals selected from a population of 162 nurses. This work presents the estimated rates of missed care-overall and broken down into its four dimensions-as well as the reasons for its occurrence, namely limited labour resources, inadequate material resources and communication problems among work teams. Results: The overall score for missed care was 16% (95% CI: 11.84%-20.15%), with the following rates by dimension: 19.48% for basic care, 14.66% for individual needs, 6.47% for patient education and discharge planning, and 4.31% for continuous patient assessment. The main reason cited for missed care was inadequate material resources, followed by limited labour resources and communication problems among work teams. Conclusion: Basic care and individual needs interventions were the most frequently omitted services, primarily because of inadequate material resources, limited labour resources and communication problems among work teams. An increase in the frequency of missed care can be expected in light of the high demand for health services, particularly as regards labour and material resources, imposed by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Abstract:Policy, Politics, &Nursing Practice, Ahead of Print. Missed nursing care is a multifaceted patient safety issue receiving increased attention among healthcare scholars worldwide. There is limited research on missed nursing care in the Jordanian healthcare context. The current study sought to examine the perceptions of Jordanian nurses toward the amount and types of missed nursing care in medical and surgical wards. We also examined the differences in missed care items between public, private, and university hospitals in Jordan. This was a cross-sectional study using the MISSCARE Survey tool. Data collection spanned 4 months between March and July 2021. The final study sample consisted of 672 registered nurses employed in five public, three private, and two university hospitals in Jordan. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation coefficent test. Of the 672 registered nurses who participated, the majority were females (n = 421; 62.6%). Most participants held a bachelor's degree in nursing (n = 577; 85.9%). The three most common missed nursing activities in the participating hospitals were: ambulation, oral care, and emotional support. Nurses working in public hospitals reported the highest missed nursing care. The age and number of patients under care significantly correlated with missed nursing care. The findings could help nursing managers develop plans to reduce missed nursing care in their healthcare institutions.

Abstract:Background: Care is one of the essential metaparadigms of nursing. The personal and professional character of the nurse, along with attention to human, financial, and communication factors, can provide an essential part of standard care. Moral sensitivity, as a part of professional ethics, offers responsible and accurate care. Objectives: This study was conducted with the aim of predicting missed nursing care based on moral sensitivity and care-related factors in 2021. Methods: In this cross-sectional-analytical study, 345 nurses working in medical education centers in Ardabil were selected by stratified random sampling from internal, surgical, special care, emergency, and pediatric departments. Data were collected using the modified Lutzen Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire, Kalish's Missed Nursing Care, and Blackman's Missed Care Related factors. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 19 with descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (ANOVA, regression, and Pearson). Results: The results of the present study showed that nurses had an average level of moral sensitivity (70.75 ± 10.83). The mean and standard deviation of missed nursing care were (33.93 ± 10.35), which was less than the median of the questionnaire. The components of moral sensitivity (0.32) and related factors (0.08) explain missed care. There was a significant relationship between age, work experience, overtime, and second job with missed care (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Identifying influential factors in reducing missed care is crucial in care, education, and management. It can be said that the dimensions of moral sensitivity and related factors such as human, financial, and communication resources are predictors of missed care. Increasing workload and having a second job increase forgetfulness in caregiving. It is suggested to utilize the experiences of nurses with expertise in care, education, and management, in addition to enhancing moral sensitivity, to ensure comprehensive care while reducing overtime and avoiding second jobs.

Abstract:Aim The aim of the study was to investigate the mediating effect of patient‐reported missed care in the relationship between care dependency, adverse events, trust in nurses and satisfaction with nursing care. Design A cross‐sectional and correlational study. Methods A total of 374 patients were recruited from the medical and surgical inpatient units of two public university hospitals in Türkiye using a convenience sampling method from May to August 2022. The data were collected using the Care Dependency Scale, MISSCARE Survey‐Patient, Trust in Nurses Scale and Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Care Scale. The relationships between the variables were analysed using a sequential mediation model (Model 6) in Hayes' PROCESS macro. Results Care dependency was found to have a significant negative effect on misscare‐communication; however, it had no significant effect on misscare‐basic care. Misscare‐communication had a significant positive effect on the experience of adverse events, while misscare‐basic care had no significant effect. Misscare‐communication and basic care had a significant negative effect on trust in nurses and satisfaction with nursing care. Misscare‐communication was found to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between care dependency and experiencing adverse events, trust in nurses and satisfaction with nursing care. Conclusion The results emphasize the importance of misscare‐basic care, communication and patients' care dependency in improving patient outcomes such as experiencing adverse events, trust in nurses and satisfaction with nursing care, and they extend existing nursing studies by addressing missed care and care dependency together from the perspective of patients. Impact We urge nurse managers to consider the role of misscare in the impact of patients' level of care dependency on patient outcomes. Accordingly, nurse managers should focus first on interventions to eliminate misscare‐communication. Effective interventions to address factors that impact communication and fulfilment of basic care are necessary to achieve better patient outcomes.
