Abstract:The question of what should be meant by a measurement is tackled from a mathematical perspective whose physical interpretation is that a measurement is a fundamental process via which a finite amount of classical information is produced. This translates into an algebraic and topological definition of measurement space that caters for the distinction between quantum and classical measurements and allows a notion of observer to be derived.

Abstract:The perception-related origins of physical measures and standards are considered within the framework of the general observer theory. The impact of observer characteristics on the development of observer-centric physics, physical concepts and metrics are analyzed. A preliminary theoretical approach is suggested for the construction of a general observer theory and formulation of its relationship to observer-centered physical concepts and theories. The approach makes it possible to construct a theory of the observer, intrinsic in any theory of physics.

Abstract:In this paper we give a contribution to the taxonomy of physical theories. We provide here a thorough description of the axiomatic foundations of the most relevant physical theories, Mechanics, Special Relativity, General Relativity, Quantum Mechanics. The corresponding interactions will be dealt with as well, i.e. Gravity in the Minkowskian limit, Electricity without quantized energy, Gravity without quantized energy, Electricity with quantized energy. We pose the problem if the extension of the principle of solidarity to all interactions can impose to consider all variables as dynamic.

Abstract:This study addresses the often underestimated importance of physical dimensions and units in the formal reconstruction of physical theories, focusing on structuralist approaches that use the concept of ``species of structure" as a meta-mathematical tool. Similar approaches also play a role in current philosophical debates on the metaphysical status of physical quantities. Our approach is already contained in an earlier suggestion by T. Tao. It involves the representation of fundamental physical quantities by one-dimensional real ordered vector spaces, while derived quantities are formulated using concepts from linear algebra, e.g., tensor products and dual spaces. As an introduction, the theory of Ohm's law is considered. We then formulate a reconstruction of the calculus of physical dimensions, including Buckingham's $\Pi$-theorem. Furthermore, an application of this method to the Newtonian theory of gravitating systems consisting of point particles is demonstrated, emphasizing the role of the automorphism group and its physical interpretations.

Abstract:We take the view that physical quantities are values generated by processes in measurement, not pre-existent objective quantities, and that a measurement result is strictly a product of the apparatus and the subject of the measurement. We habitually make an inaccurate statements when we speak of the measurement of a quantity by an apparatus. These statements can be formalised as a many valued logic with the structure of a vector space with a hermitian form in such a way as to generate probabilities in the results of measurement. The difference between this and classical probability theory is that we are not finding probabilities generated by unknown variables, but probabilities generated by unknown structure. We thus interpret quantum logic as the application of complex truth values to statements in an inaccurate language, and find that the properties of vector space hold for approximate measurement as well as for measurement of optimal accuracy, suggesting that Planck's constant governs the scale of the fundamental structures of matter.

Abstract:The theory of Physical Structures (TPS) was put forward by Professor Yu.I. Kulakov for the sake of classifying the laws of Physics. The history of the development of that theory is given in his monograph [1]. A physical structure is a geometry of one or two sets whose metric function assigns a number to every pair of points. Its phenomenological symmetry, under Kulakov, means that for every collection of some finite number of points all of their reciprocal distances are functionally related. Such geometries are endowed with a group symmetry under Klein, which is equivalent to the phenomenological symmetry, and many of them have an essential physical interpretation. That is why they are to be defined precisely and explored as purely mathematical objects. In this monograph we treat the mathematical basics of the TPS and present the results of attempts at classification that have been obtained by now. We hope that the monograph will be of interest for research workers and teachers, senior and post graduate students, as well as to all those interested in algebra, geometry and theoretical physics who would like to use the TPS in their research projects or could want to contribute to the development of its mathematical apparatus.

Abstract:The philosophy of science is a discipline concerning the metaphysical aspect of science. Recently, I proposed measurement theory, which is characterized as the metaphysical and linguistic interpretation of quantum mechanics. I assert that this theory is one of the most fundamental languages in science, and thus, it is located at the central position in science. This assertion will be examined throughout this preprint, which is written as the draft of my future book (concerning the philosophy of science). Hence, I hope to hear various opinions about this draft.

Abstract:The paper surveys the current state of the theory of the fundamental concepts of measurement which is based on the model theory of logic. A brief review is given of the historical development of measurement theory. The model-theoretic definition of measurement is presented, together with a discussion of representation and uniqueness conditions. Nominal, ordinal, extensive and interval measurement structures are outlined. The classification of scale types and the problem of meaningfulness are considered. A survey is given of conjoint and derived measurement. A brief review is made of the applications of measurement theory. Consideration is given to the treatment of uncertainty. The setting-up of systems of scales of measurement for a domain of science and its relation to theories for that domain are discussed. It is argued that measurement as defined is related to other forms of symbolic representation such as is involved in computer data representation and natural language.

Abstract:The principle which allows to construct new physical theories on the basis of classical mechanics by reduction of the number of its axiom without engaging new postulates is formulated. The arising incompleteness of theory manifests itself in terms of theoretically undefinable fundamental physical constants $\hbar$ and c. As an example we built up a parametric generalization of relativistic theory, where the Hubble Law and the dependence of light velocity on time are obtained.

Abstract:We study the mathematical structure of the notion of measurement space, which extends aspects of noncommutative topology that are based on quantale theory. This yields a geometric model of physical measurements that provides a realist picture, yet also operational, such that measurements and classical information arise interdependently as primitive concepts. A derived notion of classical observer caters for a mathematical formulation of Bohr's classical/quantum divide. Two important classes of measurement spaces are obtained, respectively from C*-algebras and from second-countable locally compact open sober topological groupoids. The latter yield measurements of classical type and relate to Schwinger's notion of selective measurement. We show that the measurement space associated to the reduced C*-algebra of any second-countable locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid is canonically equipped with a classical observer, and we establish a correspondence between properties of the observer and properties of the groupoid.

Abstract:In this short paper I consider relation between measurements, numbers and p-adic mathematical physics. p-Adic numbers are not result of measurements, but nevertheless they play significant role in description of some systems and phenomena. We illustrate their ability for applications referring to some sectors of p-adic mathematical physics and related topics, in particular, to string theory and the genetic code.

Abstract:During the course of history, the natural sciences have seen the development of increasingly convenient short-hand symbolic devices for denoting physical quantities. These devices ultimately took the form of physical algebra. However, the convenience of algebra arguably came at a cost - a loss of the clarity of direct insights by Euclid, Galileo, and Newton into natural quantitative relations. Physical algebra is frequently interpreted as ordinary algebra; i.e., it is interpreted as though symbols denote (a) numbers and operations on numbers, as opposed to (b) physical quantities and quantitative relations. The paper revisits the way in which Newton understood and expressed physical definitions and laws. Accordingly, it reviews a compact form of notation that has been used to denote both: (a) ratios of physical quantities; and (b) compound ratios, involving two or more kinds of quantity. The purpose is to show that it is consistent with historical developments to regard physical algebra as a device for denoting relations among ratios. Understood in the historical context, the objective of measurement is to establish that a physical quantity stands in a specific ratio to another quantity of the same kind. To clarify the meaning of measurement in terms of the historical origins of physics carries basic implications for the way in which measurement is understood and approached. Possible implications for the social sciences are considered.

General Formalism of the Quantum Equivalence Principle

Abstract:A consistent theory of quantum gravity will require a fully quantum formulation of the classical equivalence principle. Such a formulation has been recently proposed in terms of the equality of the rest, inertial and gravitational mass operators, and for non-relativistic particles in a weak gravitational field. In this work, we propose a generalization to a fully relativistic formalism of the quantum equivalence principle, valid for all background space-times, as well as for massive bosons and fermions. The principle is trivially satisfied for massless particles. We show that if the equivalence principle is broken at the quantum level, it implies the modification of the standard Lorentz transformations in flat space-time and a corresponding modification of the metric in curved space-time by the different mass ratios. In other words, the observed geometry would effectively depend on the properties of the test particle. Testable predictions of potential violations of the quantum equivalence principle are proposed.

Abstract:Inspired by the work of Feynman, Deutsch, We formally propose the theory of physical computability and accordingly, the physical complexity theory. To achieve this, a framework that can evaluate almost all forms of computation using various physical mechanisms is discussed. Here, we focus on using it to review the theory of Quantum Computation. As a preliminary study on more general problems, some examples of other physical mechanism are also given in this paper.

Abstract:Based on the known implicit solution for nonlinear plasma waves, an explicit solution was obtained in the form of decomposition into harmonics. The solution obtained exhibits a mechanism for steepening of nonlinear plasma wave as a result of increasing contribution of harmonics and may be used in theoretical studies of processes involving nonlinear plasma waves.

Abstract:I argue that dimensional analysis provides an answer to a skeptical challenge to the theory of model mediated measurement. The problem arises when considering the task of calibrating a novel measurement procedure, with greater range, to the results of a prior measurement procedure. The skeptical worry is that the agreement of the novel and prior measurement procedures in their shared range may only be apparent due to the emergence of systematic error in the exclusive range of the novel measurement procedure. Alternatively: what if the two measurement procedures are not in fact measuring the same quantity? The theory of model mediated measurement can only say that we assume that there is a common quantity. In contrast, I show that the satisfaction of dimensional homogeneity across the metrological extension is independent evidence for the so-called assumption. This is illustrated by the use of dimensional analysis in high pressure experiments. This results in an extension of the theory of model mediated measurement, in which a common quantity in metrological extension is no longer assumed, but hypothesized.

Towards a Coherent Theory of Physics and Mathematics: The Theory-Experiment Connection

Abstract:The problem of how mathematics and physics are related at a foundational level is of much interest. One approach is to work towards a coherent theory of physics and mathematics together. Here steps are taken in this direction by first examining the theory experiment connection. The role of an implied theory hierarchy and use of computers in comparing theory and experiment is described. The main idea of the paper is to tighten the theory experiment connection by bringing physical theories, as mathematical structures over C, the complex numbers, closer to what is actually done in experimental measurements and computations. The method replaces C by C_{n} which is the set of pairs, R_{n},I_{n}, of n figure rational numbers in some basis. The properties of these numbers are based on the type of numbers that represent measurement outcomes for continuous variables. A model of space and time based on R_{n} is discussed. The model is scale invariant with regions of constant step size interrupted by exponential jumps. A method of taking the limit n to infinity to obtain locally flat continuum based space and time is outlined. Possibly the most interesting result is that R_{n} based space is invariant under scale transformations which correspond to expansion and contraction of space relative to a flat background. Also the location of the origin, which is a space and time singularity, does not change under these transformations. Some properties of quantum mechanics based on C_{n} and on R_{n} space are briefly investigated.

Abstract:One of the main claims of the paper is that Dirac's calculus and broader theories of physics can be treated as theories written in the language of Continuous Logic. Establishing its true interpretation (model) is a model theory problem. The paper introduces such a model for the fragment which covers ``free theories'', that is physical theories with Gaussian (quadratic) potential. The model is pseudo-finite (equivalently, a limit of finite models), based on a pseudo-finite field in place of the field of complex numbers. The advantage of this unusual setting is that it treats the quantum and the statistical mechanics as just domains in the same model and explains Wick rotation as a natural transformation of the model corresponding to a shift in scales of physical units.
