Abstract:This work proposed a novel molecular-level superhydrophobic coating. The superhydrophobicity was achieved by using polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) as the low-energy substance and nanoparticles of metal organic framework (MOF) as the roughness-improving components. The nanoparticles were synthesized by using 2-aminoterephthalic acid as the ligand to obtain molecular level amination, and PDMS was molecular-level aminopropyl terminated prior to the coating preparation. These made the coating molecular-level superhydrophobic. Epoxy resin and triclosan were further used to improve the mechanical strength and to ensure the bactericidal property, respectively. These four components (NH2 -PDMS, NH2-MOF, epoxy resin, triclosan) were cured in onestep at mom temperature by using a "jointly shared" hexamethylene isocyanate (HDI) as the crosslinker via chemical interaction between isocyanate group in HDI and amino groups in NH2-PDMS and in NH2-MOF and hydroxyl groups in epoxy resin and in triclosan. The chemical immobilization of triclosan in the coatings avoids its leaching and is friendly to the environment. The as-prepared superhydrophobic coatings are mom temperature curable, fluorine-free and have excellent wear-resistant, antibacterial and antifouling performance. The coating can be prepared by simply brushing and spraying, and has a potential for large-scale industrial application.

Abstract:Fluorine-containing coatings play an essential role in waterproof paint, but the harm of fluoride to the environment does not meet the current environmental protection requirements. The present study reports an eco-friendly and fluoride-free waterproof hybrid coating prepared by a semi-continuous seed emulsion method employing vinyl tributbutoxy silane (VTBS) as the functional monomer and octyl triethoxysilane modified SiO 2 (OTES@ SiO 2 ) as the inorganic filler. In vinyl acetate/butyl acrylate hybrid coatings, the surface covering of OTES@SiO 2 and the cross-linking structure produced by VTBS not only significantly improve the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and strong hydrophobicity but also reduce the water absorption. In addition, the gloss loss of the organic–inorganic hybrid layer is <30% after being exposed to UV-irradiation for 720 h. The obtained coating could be a lovely environmental-friendly protective coating for many functional areas, especially for outdoor applications.

Abstract:To prepare water‐based superhydrophobic coatings with excellent properties would be of great significance, but it remains difficult to solve the problems of uneven dispersion of hydrophobic modified inorganic nanofillers in water and poor interfacial compatibility between hydrophilic inorganic nanofillers and polymer matrix in the film. Herein a novel and green technology is reported to disperse dodecyltriethoxysilane in water‐based polymer system uniformly by adsorbing it on the surface of emulsion latex particles first. Then after silica nanoparticles being introduced into the system, the hydrophobic modification is realized by the coupling reaction between silica nanoparticles and the alkylsilane in the film‐forming process. Furthermore, various common water‐based emulsion latexes are able to be applied as the binder between the modified nanoparticles and substrates. The resulting coatings exhibit excellent superhydrophobicity and show remarkable mechanical durability as well as chemical stability. In addition, these nanocomposite coatings are demonstrated of high performance for oil/water separation. The findings provide a valuable way to fabricate water‐based and fluorine‐free superhydrophobic coatings with excellent properties for potential industrial applications.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic coatings have attracted a lot of attention due to their excellent self-cleaning and anti-fouling capabilities. However, the preparation processes for several superhydrophobic coatings are intricate and expensive, which restricts their usefulness. In this work, we present a straightforward technique for creating durable superhydrophobic coatings that can be applied to a variety of substrates. The addition of C9 petroleum resin to a styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) solution lengthens the SBS backbone and undergoes a cross-linking reaction to form a dense spatial cross-linked structure, improving the storage stability, viscosity, and aging resistance of the SBS. The combined solution functions as a more stable and effective adhesive. Using a two-step spraying technique, the hydrophobic silica (SiO2) nanoparticles solution was applied to the surface to create durable nano-superhydrophobic coatings. Additionally, the coatings have excellent mechanical, chemical, and self-cleaning stability. Furthermore, the coatings have wide application prospects in the fields of water–oil separation and corrosion prevention.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic coatings have a wide range of applications in all areas of our lives, however, poor mechanical robustness limits their practical use. The use of organic solvents to prepare coatings can pose safety and environment pollution problems, also increase the cost of production. Water-based coating solution is used to prepare superhydrophobic coatings, which are safe and easy to scale. Thus, we demonstrate that silica nanoparticles, fluorinated alkyl silanes (FAS), fluorocarbon surfactants (FS-3100), and water can form stable system for preparation of superhydrophobic coatings on soft and hard substrates. After coating treatment, the superhydrophobic coatings exhibit excellent chemical stability (resistant to acid, alkali, salt, and ultraviolet radiation) and good mechanical robustness due to superhydrophobicity and crosslinking effects of FAS and FS-3100. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic coatings can delay water freezing time and poses superior anti-icing performance. This simple water-based coating solution may provide a new way of thinking for the later development of new coating technologies that are economical for all applications.

Abstract:In this study, an unconventional superhydrophobic surface construction technique was explored that used aluminate coupling agent (ACA) as raw material to prepare a fluorine-free and nanoparticle-free superhydrophobic coating with “rose” micro-nano structure. Mechanistic investigations proved that the structure of HY-988 was caused by the gas released from the internal reaction when heated, with the reaction temperature and time as the main influencing factors. The prepared coating exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity, peel resistance, and mechanical impact resistance. After 50 times of water impact or 180 days of exposure to air, its water contact angle (WCA) was still 154°. It showed good durability and self-cleaning effect on architectural appearance when combined with resin. Therefore, it can be concluded that the process is scalable, which not only provides a new method for the preparation of durable superhydrophobic coatings, but also opens up a new route for the applications of ACA.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic materials have been extensively exploited for corrosion protection because of their unique non-wetting properties, but restricted by the complicated fabrication process, fluorinated chemicals usage, weak interfacial binding force, low hardness, and poor abrasion/scratch resistance. In this paper, we designed a waterborne superhydrophobic coating based on modified Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles (M-Al 2 O 3 ) and waterborne epoxy resin through a versatile spray-coating approach. When the mass ratio of epoxy/M-Al 2 O 3 was 1.5, the coating features both superhydrophobic properties (water contact angle ∼ 150.8 ± 0.6° and sliding angle ∼ 4.9 ± 0.2°) and optimal abrasion-resistant stability. The coating can maintain its water-repellent superhydrophobicity after 90 abrasion cycles and 120 tape-peeling cycles, indicating reinforced interfacial robustness. Moreover, the coating exhibits excellent self-cleaning, anti-fouling, and corrosion-resistant behaviors with greatly enhanced charge transfer resistance (R ct ) and lowest frequency impedance values (|Z| 0.01Hz ). The corrosion inhibition efficiency of the original coating, coating after 90 abrasion cycles and coating after 120 tape-peeling cycles were 99.99 %, 97.54 %, and 97.52 % respectively, confirming a durable anti-corrosion stability. In addition, the coating retains its superhydrophobic properties after a 6 H pencil hardness test and knife scratch test, which demonstrates its robustness and stability against mechanical damage.

Abstract:Abstract In this research, a cost-effective method for preparing anti-corrosive and fire proof super hydrophobic coating was presented. By simply painting the mixture of alu minium hydroxide, stearic acid, and polydimethylsiloxane, the self-similar structure w as obtained. Thus, this coating maintained super hydrophobicity after sandpaper abrasi on. Moreover, this coating could withstand the chemical and fire attack without losing super hydrophobicity.

Abstract:Conventional waterborne polyurethane (WPU) has poor water resistance and poor overall performance, which limits its application in outdoor coatings. A solution to this problem is urgently needed. The introduction of fluorine-containing groups can effectively improve the water resistance of WPU. In this study, a new fluorinated chain extender (HFBMA-HPA) synthesized by free radical copolymerization and epoxy resin (E-44) were used to co-modify WPU, and five waterborne fluorinated polyurethane (WFPU) emulsions with different fluorine contents were prepared by the self-emulsification method. The effects of HFBMA-HPA content on the emulsion particle properties, coating surface properties, mechanical properties, water resistance, thermal stability, and corrosion resistance were investigated. The results showed that the WFPU coating had excellent thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties. As the content of HFBMA-HPA increased from 0 wt% to 14 wt%, the water resistance of the WFPU coating gradually increased, the water contact angle (WCA) increased from 73° to 98°, the water absorption decreased from 7.847% to 3.062%, and the surface energy decreased from 32.8 mN/m to 22.6 mN/m. The coatings also showed impressive performances in the adhesion and flexibility tests in extreme conditions. This study provides a waterborne fluorinated polyurethane material with excellent comprehensive performance that has potential application value in the field of outdoor waterproof and anticorrosion coatings.

Abstract:The facile and low-cost fabrication of fluorine-free superhydrophobic metal surfaces for anticorrosion remains a challenging issue. Here, we report a superhydrophobic coating based on polyacrylate/SiO2 nanoparticles/graphene oxide sheets through a simple yet environmentally friendly method. The as-prepared composite coating sprayed on metal surfaces exhibits excellent superhydrophobic and corrosion-resistant properties. Furthermore, the coating surface possesses good anti-wear performance and remains superhydrophobic after harsh abrasion tests. Prospectively, the developed non-fluorinated superhydrophobic coating opens up opportunities for the application in industrial anticorrosion field.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic coatings with micro and nano structures have great potential in a wide spectrum of fields due to their multifunctionality. However, some disadvantages, such as poor wear resistance and containing toxic fluorine substances, greatly limit the practical application of superhydrophobic coatings. To overcome these shortcomings, herein we have prepared a double-layer coating without fluorine which demonstrates superhydrophobicity with a contact angle of 159.5°. The bottom layer of KH560-graphene oxide (GO)/epoxy (EP) and the surface layer of hydrophobic hexadecyltrimethoxysilane modified SiO 2 (HDTMS-SiO 2 ) is prepared by scraping and spraying, respectively. The bottom layer of KH560-GO/EP effectively promotes the adhesion of the top SiO 2 layer and the coating maintains a superhydrophobic state even after sandpaper sanding, compressive studies and sand impact. In addition, the coating also has superior self-cleaning, anti-fouling, and anti-icing abilities, and it takes 157 s for it to ice up. More importantly, the superhydrophobic coating also exhibits outstanding corrosion resistance due to the synergistic effect of well-dispersed GO and hydrophobic surfaces. This work has demonstrated the great potential of fabricating composite superhydrophobic coatings via artificial architecture design for diversified applications.

Abstract:Here, a fluorine-free robust superhydrophobic coating was fabricated on the Al alloy substrate by a simple and low-cost approach. Embed modified TiO2 nanoparticles onto semi-cured epoxy resin adhesive layer prominently reduces the content of low-energy materials (stearic acid) on the superhydrophobic coating. This prepared coating with hierarchical structures, re-entrant structures and low surface energy shows superhydrophobic. The superhydrophobic coating shows excellent high impalement pressure even water droplets with the velocity of 3.43 m/s. This coating also exhibits stability after different tests and noticeable enhancement of adhesive strength compared with the coating without the epoxy resin. Moreover, this coating presents enhanced durability verified by a sandpaper abrasion and decreased friction coefficient by a wear test. It moreover enabled noticeable self-cleaning property. This superhydrophobic coating also shows promising anti-corrosion property in both the corrosion solution and the salt spray compared with the Al alloy substrate. Notably, the superhydrophobic property combined with photocatalytic function prominently improves the anti-biofouling property of the Al alloy substrate due to the superhydrophobicity reducing organic and bacterial adhesion and the photocatalysis providing organic degradation and preventing bacterial adhesion. The fluorine-free robust multifunctional coating with superhydrophobic and photocatalytic properties can be applied to functionalize various solid surfaces.

Abstract:Abstract This study aims to improve the hydrophobic properties and corrosion resistance of fluorinated acrylate coatings. The surface of nano-SiO 2 was modified by the silicone coupling reagent (KH-570), and the reactive functional groups were introduced to modify fluorinated acrylates. The functionalized SiO 2 -modified waterborne fluorinated acrylate emulsion was prepared by free polymerization with dual initiators. The structure of the polymer was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectro-meter ( 1 H-NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Waters gel chromatography (GPC). The properties of the films and coatings were analyzed by contact angle, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electrochemical analysis. The results showed that the contact angle reached 120° when the SiO 2 content was 3%, the electrochemical impedance value reached 1.49 × 10 7 Ω·cm 2 , and the pencil hardness was 3H.

Abstract:Multifunctional coatings have drawn enormous attention in the past few years in view of their fascinating abilities to respond to complex surroundings. In this study, we reported a waterborne multifunctional coating derived from aqueous polyisocyanate cross-linked with poly [2-(perfluorooctyl) ethyl methacrylate]-[methacryloyloxyethyl dimethyl butyl ammonium bromide]-[2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate] (pFOMA-MDBA-HEMA) copolymers. The combination of hydrophobic perfluorinated chain segment and hydrophilic quaternary ammonium salt endows the resultant coating multifunction upon exposure to different environments. For example, in water-rich surroundings, the coating surface exhibits oleophobicity underwater, self-cleaning, anti-fogging, antibacterial, anti-algal, and anti-icing properties due to the presence of hydrophilic quaternary ammonium groups. Benefiting from the low surface energy perfluorinated chain segment, the coating also shows the excellent anti-oil adhesion, wear resistance and UV aging resistance properties in dry air surroundings. Through the combination of these two components, the as-prepared pFOMA-MDBA-HEMA coating can cope with different environmental functional requirements both in air and underwater, which provides an environmentally friendly material with great potential application prospects in a variety of fields.

Abstract:We report the fabrication of a robust, transparent, and superhydrophobic organic-inorganic composite coating with simple, low-cost, effective, and environmentally friendly characteristics. First, a waterborne polyurethane (WPU) emulsion and silica fluoride (F-SiO2) nanoparticle dispersion were synthesized. Subsequently, the organic-inorganic superhydrophobic surfaces with low surface energy were constructed by spraying, in order, the WPU emulsion and F-SiO2 nanoparticle dispersion on substrates. The robust composite coating had superhydrophobicity and good optical transparency, in which the WPU provided a strongly adhesive elastic substance for the anchoring of superhydrophobic F-SiO2 nanoparticles to further construct a mechanically and chemically resilient nanocomposite coating. After 250 cycles of abrasion, a long period of ultraviolet irradiation, and oil pollution and cross-cut tests, the nanocomposite coating still exhibited excellent properties including good self-cleaning, transparency, abrasion resistance, aging resistance, and strong adhesion. Even after being oil-contaminated, the WPU/F-SiO2 composite coatings still possessed superhydrophobic properties, showing their future application as self-cleaning surfaces and protective coatings for various substrates.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic coatings arouse much attention for their extensive potential applications from industry to our daily life. The introduction of nanoparticles into polymer matrix is one of the main methods to construct superhydrophobic coatings. However, the fabrication and practical application of super-antiwetting coatings are frequently hindered, owing to the incompatibility between inorganic nanoparticles and organic polymer matrix. Herein, we develop a durable coating that tackles the compatibility problem of inorganic and organic phases, formulating with hyperbranched polysiloxane modified silica nanoparticles and silicon-based acrylic polymers. The as-prepared coatings exhibit excellent superhydrophobicity with CA beyond 158° and SA below 4°. They are capable of retaining superhydrophobicity after exposing to harsh conditions including immersion in acid-base solutions for 12 days, boiling water for 3 h and high temperature of 150 °C for 24 h, as well as experiencing various mechanical damage such as 100 cycles of sandpaper abrasion, 40 cycles of tape peeling and 200 g sand impact. Furthermore, the coating can be further applied to anti-insect blood adhesion under dynamic conditions, self-cleaning of pollutants in life and substrate surfaces with diverse properties. The preparation technology of superhydrophobic coatings has unique advantages in scalable productivity, less equipment requirements and mild process conditions, and also provides insights into the fabrication of superhydrophobic coatings with good compatibility of inorganic and organic materials.

However, low durability, environmentally harmful fabrication methods, and complex fabrication methods severely limit their widely practical applications. In this work, we demonstrate an eco-friendly, robust, superhydrophobic matrix coating based on siloxane-modified hyperbranched waterborne polyurethane (Si-HBPU) in combination with fluorinated silica nanoparticles (F-SiO2). The superhydrophobic coating was constructed by convenient process of casting Si-HBPU onto the substrate, which was regulated by a moisture-controlled model, and then F-SiO2 nanoparticles were uniformly seeded onto the surface of semi-cured Si-HBPU. The Si-HBPU covalently bonds to F-SiO2 nanoparticles for the reason that Si-HBPU possesses many polar groups (such as Si-OH), which utilized the silanol groups to chemically bond with the surface hydroxyl of the substrate and F-SiO2 nanoparticles to form a solid SiOSi cross-linking network. The resulted coating exhibited an excellent water repellency with contact angles of ∼ 163° and sliding angles of ∼ 3°. And benefiting from the establishment of the stable SiOSi binding, the modified coating demonstrates excellent mechanical robustness, and is capable of maintaining superhydrophobicity after 140 cycles of sandpaper abrasion. The resultant coating shows excellent anti-icing/deicing performance: the water-freezing time can be postponed to 2205 s at −20℃ and the ice adhesion is significantly lower than that of a pure copolymer coating (∼21.2 KPa). Moreover, the Si-HBPU/ F-SiO2 coating also demonstrated excellence in scratch resistantance, anti-fouling and anti-corrosion performances. These remarkable performances may promote the development of large-scale operation and practical application.

Abstract:Hydrophobic functionalized coatings have attracted widespread attention in fabric finishing fields, which exhibit breathable properties and can significantly enhance wearer comfort. However, the inadequate hydrophobic durability of inorganic coating and poor biologically safety of fluorine-containing coatings limited the further development of fabric finishing coating, thus it remains a significant challenge to develop fluorine-free and durable fabric finishing coating. In this study, a glyceryl monostearate (GMO)-modified fluorine-free waterborne polyurethane (WPU) emulsion (WSiPU) was synthesized and applied as a hydrophobic coating on different type of fabrics successfully. The optimal additive amount of GMO was determined by investigating the particle size and size distributions of the emulsions, solvent swell rates, wettability of water and oil on the coatings, and hydrophobicity. Cotton fabric treated with optimized WSiPU 8 emulsion exhibited excellent hydrophobicity, durability, reusability, solvent resistance, breathability, and bio-safety. Furthermore, clothing and gloves treated with WSiPU 8 emulsion exhibited excellent water repellency under flowing water and after soaking in sewage. The treated cotton fabric showed excellent hydrophobicity (water contact angle > 140 degrees), durability (>50 resistance cycles of abrasion and laundry), and self-cleaning performance. The findings of this study provided novel insights for various applications such as oil-water separation and hydrophobic coatings.
