Abstract:Purpose of ReviewThis review seeks to update the reader on the most recent advancements in post-traumatic headache, identify gaps in the current state of the science, and discuss treatment and future research.Recent FindingsPost-traumatic headache is a heterogeneous disorder, pathologically distinct from other, primary headaches yet sharing some common pathways. Recently, criteria for post-traumatic headache have been further refined, but subsequent publications have also identified controversies and proposed further revisions. Most recently, calcitonin gene–related peptide-modulating drugs are being investigated as a promising therapy.SummaryPost-traumatic headache is prevalent and disabling and presents an enormous societal burden. Despite this, our understanding of this disorder has historically been limited with treatments that are mostly borrowed from other, primary headaches and which have been shown to be largely ineffective. The last 4 years have produced new insights into this disorder in terms of its characterization, natural history, pathophysiology and treatment. Many questions remain, and more specific treatments remain elusive. An individualized, multifaceted treatment approach is still required.
