Abstract:The research in circularly polarized luminescence has attracted wide interest in recent years. Efforts on one side are directed toward the development of chiral materials with both high luminescence efficiency and dissymmetry factors, and on the other side, are focused on the exploitations of these materials in optoelectronic applications. This review summarizes the recent frontiers (mostly within five years) in the research in circularly polarized luminescence, including the development of chiral emissive materials based on organic small molecules, compounds with aggregation-induced emissions, supramolecular assemblies, liquid crystals and liquids, polymers, metal-ligand coordination complexes and assemblies, metal clusters, inorganic nanomaterials, and photon upconversion systems. In addition, recent applications of related materials in organic light-emitting devices, circularly polarized light detectors, and organic lasers and displays are also discussed.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials have received extensive interest due to their unique optical activity. An increasing number of research endeavors were focused on molecular design of excellent CPL materials to meet the requirement of optoelectronic applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), chiral sensing, information encryption, etc. CPL-active polymeric materials have demonstrated promising potential rooted in their superiority in scalability, flexibility, 3D-stacking capability and film-forming property. In this review, we survey and outline the development of CPL-active polymers focused on the polymer structure-dependent design strategy, including chiral side chain polymers, chiral main chain polymers, chiral coordination polymers and chiral induction systems involving polymer. We also highlight the recent applications of CPL-active polymers to make a clear statement about realistic significance. It is our hope that the system view of CPL-active polymer almost in the last ten years will offer new insights and inspirations in developing excellent polymers and promote the use of efficient and versatile CPL materials.

Abstract:Benefited from direct generation of circularly polarized (CP) emission with tunable colors, high efficiencies and facile device architectures, CP organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) have attracted great attention and are expected to meet industrial applications. Particularly, CP electroluminescence (CPEL) originated from CP-OLEDs has wide potential applications in 3D displays, optical information storage, quantum communication, and biological sensors. The diverse design strategies of chiral luminescent materials for CP-OLEDs, including small organic emitters, lanthanide and transition-metal complexes and conjugated polymers, have been extensively explored. Helicene with twisted extended pi-conjugated molecular structure could exhibit special helical chirality and excellent circularly polarized luminescence properties, which has been employed as the ingenious chirality core for constructing efficient chiral luminescent materials. In addition, significant improvements have been made in terms of CP photoluminescence research, however, the development of CPEL with more application prospects in optoelectronic technology still lags behind. In this review, we systematically summarize the recent advances in chiral luminescent materials based on helicene structure and their CPEL properties, including helicene-based chiral fluorescence molecules, transition metal complexes and thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules, and discuss current challenges and future perspectives for this hot research field. We believe this progress report will provide a promising perspective of OLEDs based on helicene emitters with CPEL properties for extensive researchers, including chemical, physical and material scientists in different disciplinary fields and attract them to this rapidly developing field.
What makes efficient circularly polarised luminescence in the condensed phase: aggregation-induced circular dichroism and light emission

Abstract:In this contribution, we conceptually present a new avenue to construction of molecular functional materials with high performance of circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the condensed phase. A molecule (1) containing luminogenic silole and chiral sugar moieties was synthesized and thoroughly characterized. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence emission are observed, but upon molecular aggregation, both the CD and fluorescence are simultaneously turned on, showing aggregation-induced CD (AICD) and emission (AIE) effects. The AICD effect is supported by the fact that the molecules readily assemble into right-handed helical nanoribbons and superhelical ropes when aggregated. The AIE effect boosts the fluorescence quantum efficiency (phi(F)) by 136 fold (phi(F), similar to 0.6% in the solution versus similar to 81.3% in the solid state), which surmounts the serious limitations of aggregation-caused quenching effect encountered by conventional luminescent materials. Time-resolved fluorescence study and theoretical calculation from first principles conclude that restriction of the low-frequency intramolecular motions is responsible for the AIE effect. The helical assemblies of 1 prefer to emit right-handed circularly polarised light and display large CPL dissymmetry factors (g(em)), whose absolute values are in the range of 0.08-0.32 and are two orders of magnitude higher than those of commonly reported organic materials. We demonstrate for the first time the use of a Teflon-based microfluidic technique for fabrication of the fluorescent pattern. This shows the highest g(em) of -0.32 possibly due to the enhanced assembling order in the confined microchannel environment. The CPL performance was preserved after more than half year storage under ambient conditions, revealing the excellent spectral stability. Computational simulation was performed to interpret how the molecules in the aggregates interact with each other at the molecular level. Our designed molecule represents the desired molecular functional material for generating efficient CPL in the solid state, and the current study shows the best results among the reported organic conjugated molecular systems in terms of emission efficiency, dissymmetry factor, and spectral stability.

Abstract:The research on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has garnered significant attention in recent years due to its many potential applications. One aspect of this research involves the pursuit of chiral materials that posess both high luminescence efficiency and dissymmetry factors. The investigation of CPL behavior is of paramount importance because the structural information of chiral luminescent systems in the excited state can be uncovered. The objective of this review is to offer a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in the CPL research field, with a particular focus on the development of chiral emissive materials, including organic, inorganic, and hybrid substances. Furthermore, this review outlines the recent applications of these materials in areas such as displays, photoelectric devices, anticounterfeiting measures, and sensors. Finally, we highlight the primary challenges and potential prospects of CPL materials. Our aspiration is that this endeavor will contribute new perspectives and insights that further advancements in related research fields.

Abstract:This review summarizes the state‐of‐the‐art research progress in the construction of polymer‐based circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials; and the newly emerging categories of polymer‐based CPL materials are also reviewed. The applications of polymer‐based CPL materials in organic light‐emitting diodes, information security encryption, and optical sensors are discussed. Challenges and perspectives for the future development in polymer‐based CPL materials are proposed. Chiral materials capable of generating circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have gained rapidly growing research interest by virtue of their peculiar photophysical characteristics and far‐reaching applications. Amongst various CPL materials, polymer‐based CPL materials have constituted an important class owing to their abundant types, ease of manufacture, high thermal stability, as well as, tunable properties. The present work reviews the latest advances in constructing polymer‐based CPL materials, which are classified based on the interaction modes between chiral and luminescent components, that is, covalent interaction, non‐covalent interaction, as well as, without covalent and non‐covalent interactions. The newly emerging categories of polymer‐based CPL materials, that is, nonconventional fluorescence‐based CPL materials, circularly polarized room temperature phosphorescence, and polymer‐based CPL materials with thermally activated delayed fluorescence properties are also presented. Typical applications of the polymer‐based CPL emitters in organic light‐emitting diodes, information security encryption, and optical sensors are further discussed. Additionally, the current challenges and future perspectives in this field are summarized. This review article is expected to stimulate more unprecedented achievements derived from polymer‐based CPL materials, thus further promoting their future practical applications.

Abstract:Circularly polarized (CP) light, as a special form of polarized light, demonstrates potential application prospects in future displays and optoelectronic technologies. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from chiral chromophores is an ideal method to directly generate CP light, but how to design efficient emitters is always a perplexing problem. Among various chiral materials, CPL materials with axial chirality can provide us with clear structural parameters and information to further explore the structure-activity relationship. Herein, we systematically summarize the development status of axially chiral compounds with CPL properties from two aspects of photoluminescence and electroluminescence, covering metal complexes, polymers, supramolecular assemblies, simple organic molecules, and liquid crystals systems. In addition, we initially explore the relationship between CPL performance and axially chiral configuration, and the current challenges and opportunities in this vibrant field are also discussed.

Abstract:Polyisocyanides and their block copolymers have widespread applications in many fields due to their unique helix and self-assembly properties. At first, the latest progress in the preparation of helical polyisocyanide-based block copolymers via the method of one-pot sequential controlled synthesis and stepwise polymerization was highlighted in this minireview. Various categories of helical polyisocyanide-based copolymers including amphiphilic block copolymers, UV-response block copolymers, π -conjugated block copolymers, etc., have been prepared successfully. Moreover, recent advances in the self-assembly and circularly polarized luminescence performance of amphiphilic and π -conjugated helical polyisocyanide-based copolymers have been introduced, respectively. We hope this minireview will not only inspire more interest in developing helical polyisocyanide-based copolymers, but also encourage further progress in the field of building artificial functional materials.

Abstract:AbstractCircularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials have received significant attention in the field of fundamental science recently. These materials offer substantial advancement of technological applications, such as optical data storage, displays, and quantum communication. Various strategies have been proposed in self‐assembled materials consisting of inorganic, organic, and hybrid systems, particularly in the chiral orientationally ordered soft matter systems (e.g., chiral liquid crystals (LCs) and LC polymers). However, developing scientific approaches to achieve the pronounced and steerable circularly polarized light emission remains challenging. Herein, we present a comprehensive review on the recent development of CPL materials based on chiral LCs, including thermotropic LCs (cholesteric LCs and bent‐core LCs), lyotropic LCs (nanocellulose LCs and polyacetylene‐based LCs), and LC polymers (cholesteric LC‐based polymers, helical nanofibers, and helical network). In addition, the fundamental mechanisms, design principles, and potential applications based on these chiral LCs and LC polymers in soft matter systems are systematically reviewed. This review summarizes with a prospect on the latent challenges, which can strengthen our understanding of the basic principles of CPL in chiral orientationally ordered soft matter systems and provide a new insight into the progress in several fields, such as chemistry, materials science, optics, electronics, and biology.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as fantastic luminescent nanomaterials with significant potentials due to their unique photoluminescence properties. With the rapid development of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials, many researchers have associated QDs with CPL property, resulting in numerous novel CPL-active QDs-containing materials over the recent years. The present work reviews the latest advances in CPL-active QDs-based materials, which are classified based on the types of QDs, including perovskite QDs, carbon dots, and colloidal semiconductor QDs. The applications of CPL-active QDs-based materials in biological, optoelectronic, and anti-counterfeiting are also discussed. Additionally, the current challenges and future perspectives in this field are summarized. This review article is expected to stimulate more unprecedented achievements derived from CPL-active QDs-based materials, thus further promoting their future practical applications.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials have been widely used in the fields of bioimaging, optoelectronic devices, and optical communications. The supramolecular interaction, involving harnessing non-covalent interactions between host and guest molecules to control their arrangements and assemblies, represents an advanced approach for facilitating the development of CPL materials and finely constructing and tuning the desired CPL properties. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic natural polysaccharides, which have also been ubiquitous in various fields such as molecular recognition, drug encapsulation, and catalyst separation. By adjusting the interactions between CDs and guest molecules precisely, composite materials with CPL properties can be facilely generated. This review aims to outline the design strategies and performance of CD-based CPL materials comprehensively and provides a detailed illustration of the interactions between host and guest molecules.

Abstract:Due to their magnetic photophysical properties, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials are of particular interest. They have a wide range of potential applications in biological science, 3D display, information storage, spintronics, optoelectronic devices, and so forth. The ones with excellent CPL character range from small chiral molecules to supermolecules, and from chiral rare earth complexes to nano-superstructures. Recently, this field began fast development due to the progress of new materials and technology in chiral science and nanoscience. This review presents a whole picture of this field, including theory and experiments. The formulas suitable to ordinary chiral materials and chiral optical crystals are presented. The reviewed CPL-active materials are categorized into small organic molecules, lanthanide complexes, inorganic nanomaterials, self-assembled helical nanomaterials, and supermolecular gels. The corresponding merits and drawbacks are discussed systematically. The influence factors on the dissymmetry factor and luminescence efficiency are presented in detail. Last, we discuss the opportunities and challenges of concurrently enhancing the dissymmetry factor and luminescent efficiency.

Abstract:Abstract Circularly polarized light exhibits promising applications in future displays and photonic technologies. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from chiral luminophores is an ideal approach to directly generating circularly polarized light, in which the energy loss induced by the circularly polarized filters can be reduced. Among various chiral luminophores, organic micro-/nano-structures have attracted increasing attention owing to the high quantum efficiency and luminescence dissymmetry factor. Herein, the recent progress of CPL from organic micro-/nano-structures is summarized. Firstly, the design principles of CPL-active organic micro-/nano-structures are expounded from the construction of micro-/nano-structure and the introduction of chirality. Based on these design principles, several typical organic micro-/nano-structures with CPL activity are introduced in detail, including self-assembly of small molecules, self-assembly of π-conjugated polymers, and self-assembly on micro-/nanoscale architectures. Subsequently, we discuss the external stimuli that can regulate CPL performance, including solvents, pH value, metal ions, mechanical force, and temperature. We also summarize the applications of CPL-active materials in organic light-emitting diodes, optical information processing, and chemical and biological sensing. Finally, the current challenges and prospects in this emerging field are presented. It is expected that this review will provide a guide for the design of excellent CPL-active materials.
Spiranthes Sinensis-Inspired Circular Polarized Luminescence in a Solid Block Copolymer Film with a Controllable Helix.

Abstract:Chiral materials with circular polarized luminescence (CPL) have attracted much interest because of their extensive optical information and remarkable sensitivity. Inspired by the helical template in Spiranthes sinensis, we propose here a general and flexible method for fabricating solid CPL materials using a block copolymer-formed helix as a template. A chiral arrangement of various nonchiral fluorescent molecules was obtained in the block copolymer-based hybrid film. An excimer chiralty rule was found for the CPL emission of nonchiral fluorescent molecules: a right-handed helix induced left-handed CPL emission and a left-handed helix induced right-handed CPL emission. A dissipative particle dynamics simulation showed that such an antihelical effect is related to the length between the adjacent interacting points of nonchiral fluorescent molecules along the helical structure. Furthermore, the fluorescent films had a high dissymmetric factor for CPL emission, and thus, the films provide a general and flexible platform for designing and preparing advanced functional chiroptical materials.
From 0 to N: Circularly Polarized Luminescence Generation from Achiral Luminophores in Fibrous Morphologies

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has attracted broad interest due to its potential applications in advanced photonics and electronics. CPL is generally produced from chiral moieties-decorated π-conjugated molecules. Alternatively, CPL can be directly generated from achiral luminescent materials in helical and twisted supramolecular systems, which circumvents the tough and tedious syntheses in the traditional method. In particular, one-dimensional helical supramolecular systems in fibrous morphology are superior for CPL generation over those in spheroidal or planar structures, because of their high dissymmetry factors (glum). Efforts on one side are focused on the development of helical luminescent fibers with high glum, and on the other side, are directed toward the arrangement of nanofibers to produce scalable materials (films or fibers) with chiral activity. This review summarizes the recent advances in CPL generation from supramolecular systems, illustrating how the chirality transfer, amplification, and regulation of CPL are achieved in fibrous morphologies. Their working mechanisms at hierarchical length scales, including helical fibrous supramolecular assemblies at the nanoscale, chiral films constructed by helically-arranged nanofibers at the microscale, and macroscopic fibers via mechanical twisting, are described sequentially. Finally, the current challenges and future opportunities of the chiral system are also presented.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), as an important chiroptical phenomenon, not only can directly characterize the excited state structure information of chiroptical materials, but also has great application prospects in 3D optical displays, information storage, biological probes, CPL lasers and so forth. Recently, chiral organic small molecules with CPL have attracted much research interest because of their excellent luminescence efficiency, clear molecular structures, unique flexibility and easy functionalization. Planar chiral organic compounds make up an important class of chiral organic small molecular materials and often have rigid macrocyclic skeletons, which have important research value in the field of chiral supramolecular chemistry (e.g., chiral self-assembly and chiral host–guest chemistry). Therefore, the research of planar chiral organic compounds has become a hotspot for CPL. It is time to summarize the recent developments of CPL-active compounds based on planar chirality. In this feature article, we summarize various types of CPL-active compounds based on planar chirality. Meanwhile, we also overview recent research of the planar chiral CPL-active compounds field in terms of optoelectronic devices, asymmetric catalysis, and chiroptical sensing. Finally, we discuss their future research prospects in the field of CPL-active materials. We hope that this review will be helpful to the research work related to planar chiral luminescent materials and promote the development of chiral macrocyclic chemistry.

Circularly Polarized Light Responsive Materials: Design Strategies and Applications

Abstract:Circularly polarized light (CPL) with the end of optical vector traveling along circumferential trajectory, shows left‐ and right‐handedness, which transmits chiral information to materials via complicated CPL‐matter interactions. Materials with circular dichroism respond to CPL illumination selectively with differential outputs that can be used to design novel photodetectors. Racemic or achiral compounds under CPL go through photodestruction, photoresolution and asymmetric synthesis pathways to generate enantiomeric bias and optical activity. By this strategy, helical polymers and chiral inorganic plasmonic nanostructures are synthesized directly, and their intramolecular folding and subsequent self‐assembly are photo‐modulable as well. In the aggregated state of self‐assembly and liquid crystal phase, helical sense of the dynamic molecular packing is sensitive to enantiomeric bias brought by CPL, enabling the chiral amplification to supramolecular scale. In this review, we aim to systematically summarize and discuss the application‐guided design strategies of CPL‐responsive materials. Asymmetric synthesis, resolution and property‐modulation of small organic compounds, polymers, inorganic nanoparticles, supramolecular assemblies and liquid crystals are highlighted based on the important developments during the last decades.
