Abstract:This paper is to present a numerical investigation based on finite-element analysis (FEA) to study the shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC). The results of literature experimental studies are to be used to validate the FE model and compare its results with them. Moreover, the models of both types: two-dimensional (2D) shell element and three-dimensional (3D) solid element are to be used in addition to comparing the difference in the central processing unit (CPU) time between them. Furthermore, various strengthening techniques of UHPFRC are to be used. Such techniques include side plates, vertical strips, U-shaped strips, and near surface mounted (NSM) strengthening technique. The parameters include the effect of changing thickness and length of strengthening plates in addition to the effect of reinforcement of theses plates. The numerical study showed that the strengthening using side plates with a length, which was equal to the shear span, caused partial debonding in the lower part of the strengthening plate. However, the overall failure pattern was changed from the shear in the control beam to flexural. The NSM strengthening technique was able to overcome the debonding, which had no presence to be noticed. Such a result was due to the increase in the contact area between the strengthening plates and the concrete body, which led to an increase in the friction and bearing faces of strengthening plates, as a consequence. Finally, the study is to show that changing the thickness of the strengthening plates has a little effect on increasing the ultimate load, while maintaining the failure pattern of ductile flexural in all thicknesses.
