Abstract:In this article, I examine the intersecting ideologies and practices of community engagement, social practice art, and community-based art education through social interaction and cooperation. Using a case study of art education courses I have taught, I make connections between these three practices, focusing on the democratic concepts of civic responsibility, social justice, common themes of human experience, and meaning-making with and through art in schools, museums, and communities. Providing preservice and in-service art educators with access to empowering community-engaged experiences that holistically integrate their artist/teacher/researcher identities can be personally, professionally, and socially transformative. Modeling curricular practices for students that account for their personal artmaking; the learners’ cultures; and the tenets of social practice art, engaged pedagogy, and community-based art education can better prepare art educators to reconceptualize curriculum in response to community and social engagement concerns.
Educational approaches within US art teacher education: The status of ecological and environmental education

Abstract:Over the preceding half century, ecological and environmental art pedagogies have been put forth within the field of art education. In this study, we sought to understand their contemporary emphasis in US art teacher education and how that emphasis compares with other educational approaches. Through surveying art teacher educators and pre-service art teachers, we found the emphasis of ecological/environmental art education was the lowest of the educational approaches surveyed. In contrast, multicultural education, visual culture and social justice were some of the highest-ranked approaches. The gap in emphasis, between these approaches and ecological/environmental education, represents an opportunity to draw attention to their shared characteristics. We recommend art teacher education adopt an ecofeminist orientation to facilitate its transition towards intersectionality in pedagogy, so it can effectively prepare pre-service teachers to engage with social, cultural and ecological content and issues through art curriculum and pedagogy.

Abstract:In this article, two authors revisit qualitative research on art educators' curriculum work in schools conducted a decade apart. By placing these studies into dialogue, they examine what is said and unsaid to reveal (dis)comforting trends in education. This narrative analysis reveals the permanence of dominant ideologies, the pull of the habitus, and the impact of teacher's identity and positionality on curriculum and pedagogy. The authors conclude with a series of curricular (dis)comforts as invitations for envisioning and creating futurings that hold the enduring possibility for new paradigms in teaching and learning. Naming and critically reflecting on these (dis)comforts opens possibilities to move beyond the comforts of maintaining a dominant curriculum that upholds racial and class hierarchies.

Abstract:Since the “old days” of abstract expressionism and action painting, serious art critics have been de-emphasizing the role of the prematurely aging “Elements and Principles” of art as the basis for their criticism. Along with this de-emphasis has come the acknowledgement that the newer art forms are being created by a generation of men and women who were nurtured on Dewey, Read, Kepes, Moholy-Nagy, Lowry, Bell etc. and who now look upon their former mentors as mere academic synthesizers of words, logic, psychology, philosophy and optics. The traditional approaches to the creation and appreciation of art have been too thoroughly digested to attract the current generation of artists. In fact, many of the creative struggles of these artists emanate from their rejection of the “Elements and Principles” which were gospel in their youth, and the subsequent search for more meaningful guides for artistic expression. (Oddly enough, however, there is apparent contradiction in that some of these new guides take on the trappings of the pre-Modern Art era. As an important contemporary artist recently said in discussing her painting in which a rock like structure appeared to protrude forcefully from the background of the canvas, “For a while it took more guts for me to model that form realistically than it did for Franz Kline to slash color on his canvases a few years ago.” It is beginning to be acceptable, even fashionable for some artists to show that they can draw in the “traditional” sense.)

Abstract:In recent years, school psychology has given increasing attention to issues of social justice and antiracism. While such orientations are not new, the scope and centrality of these movements within the field are, as is the growing appreciation of the need to integrate them across all areas of professional activities and efforts in school psychology. The aim of this special topic section is to create a space for scholarship addressing a broad range of issues relevant to advancing equity and justice in school psychology. In particular, we seek to curate diverse scholarship that expands the ways we conceptualize, design, implement, and interpret school psychology research, as well as how we approach graduate preparation and practice in school psychology to advance equitable and just services for individuals from historically and systemically marginalized backgrounds. The resulting compilation of articles provide insight into how school psychologists can approach scholarship, practice, and professional education to advance antiracism, social justice, and equity. Themes include expanding the nature and scope of school psychology scholarship by confronting the detriments of whiteness and epistemic exclusion; centering equity, healing, and minoritized voices in practice; and leveraging diverse research methods, including participatory approaches, to elevate youth and family voices in addressing some of the most pressing issues in schools. Impact Statement School psychology has given increasing attention to issues of social justice and antiracism, with growing appreciation of the need to integrate them across all professional activities. This article contributes important information regarding how these broad efforts can be supported by confronting the detriments of epistemic exclusion and whiteness in scholarship; centering equity, healing, and minoritized voices in practice; and leveraging diverse research methods, including participatory approaches.

Using the arts in teaching and learning: building student capacity for community-based work in health psychology

Abstract:Perspectives have emerged within health psychology that focus on the social constitution of health and emphasize community development and social change strategies to reduce human suffering and improve quality of life. Education and training are needed to build student capacity in these areas. Our analysis, grounded in theoretical, empirical, and experiential evidences, suggests that the arts may play a leading role in building this student capacity for community research and action. Major themes are that the arts promote student understandings of the values, goals, and practices of community-based work and enable meaningful student roles in community-based partnerships. Narrative accounts of our use of creative writing, visual arts, poetry, film, and theater in classroom and community-based practice with students illustrate these themes.

Abstract:A range of arguments is used to justify the inclusion of the arts in schools’ curricula from different parts of the world, moreover, "the arts" can mean different things to different audiences. It is therefore useful to contextualize why and how arts education contributes to such things as social utility, personal growth, and aesthetic awareness. Arts education in many countries is being marginalized, and the cognitive value of arts education is being sidelined. By reinstating the arts in education as cognitively driven, culturally relevant, and progressive, an arts offering can be formed that aligns with, and advances, contemporary perspectives and practices in education.
‘Being’ a critical multicultural pedagogue in the art education classroom

Abstract:Art educators continuously struggle to understand what multiculturalism ‘looks like’ in the art classroom. This has resulted in multicultural art education becoming superficial, in which art teachers guide students through art projects like creating African masks, Native American dream catchers, Aboriginal totems, and sand paintings, all without communicating the context of the art. This type of multiculturalism essentializes cultures, and builds Western, myopic narratives about groups of people, specifically about their ‘Art’. Critical multiculturalism is a power-focused upgrade of multiculturalism that calls for a critique of power and demands recognition that racism and other discriminations are enmeshed in the fabric of our social order. Teaching through a critical multiculturalism framework helps teachers dismantle Western, normalized narratives and produce counter-hegemonic curriculum that contextualizes culture and reveals its fluidity. In this article, the author shares a teacher action research study in which she describes what critical multiculturalism looks like in her art education classroom. The study focuses on ‘being’ a critically multicultural educator versus ‘doing’ critical multiculturalism. Such a position counters the idea that critical multiculturalism is a thing to complete, but instead is an ongoing process that rests on specific ways of thinking and considering the classroom, curriculum, and students.

Abstract:Curriculum theorists have provided a knowledge base concerning aesthetics, agency, creativity, lived experience, transcendence, learning through the body, and the power of the arts to engender visions of alternative possibilities in culture, politics, and the environment. However, these theoretical threads do not reveal the potential of K–12 dance education. Research on nonverbal communication and cognition, coupled with illustrative programs, provides key insights into dance as a distinct performing art discipline and as a liberal applied art that fosters creative problem solving and the acquisition, reinforcement, and assessment of nondance knowledge. Synthesizing and interpreting theory and research from different disciplines that is relevant to dance education, this article addresses cognition, emotion, language, learning styles, assessment, and new research directions in the field of education.

Abstract:Arts education occupies a fringe position in school curricula because the arts are widely regarded as accessible to only a chosen few and of little practical use, or as purely recreational. What is needed is understanding of the potential contribution of arts education to other areas of curriculum, including those often seen as the real core of school learning (“the three Rs”). The psychological processes and personal properties inherent to arts education correspond closely to those now regarded as vital right across the curriculum. In contrast, they are often neglected in conventional academic disciplines. Arts education is capable of promoting these processes and personal properties to transfer to other elements of the curriculum in the form of transferable creativity, but this will not occur without changes in mainline pedagogy, for example, in the assessment.

Abstract:Abstract This article reports historical research which sought to understand the present‐day post‐secondary art curriculum through analysing its history in terms of changes in conceptions of art. It found that there have been six distinctive curricula: Apprentice, Academic, Formalist, Expressive, Conceptual and Professional. As a new curriculum has been introduced, it has co‐existed with much contained in a previous one. Most of the curriculum changes have taken place in the past 65 years. During this time, there has been a massive expansion in the education of artists and at the same time art schools accommodated first modernism and then post‐Duchampian aesthetics. A conclusion is that this has made for a very crowded curriculum. Moreover, despite there being an ever increasing choice of things a student might learn, it appears that there is nothing which all students have to learn. It can be problematic that one part of the curriculum is in contradiction to another part, and moreover this lack of a core raises fundamental, ontological questions about what art as a discipline is.

Abstract:Most people think of the arts in education as a way of teaching arts skills, and in times when the emphasis is on achieving literacy and numeracy (necessary, but not sufficient, educational goals) the arts can often be seen as ‘fringe.’ This article makes the case that study of artworks in the service of developing perceptive and imaginative capacities is critical to K‐12 education, and begins in the elementary grades. Arts skills can also be explored, but it is argued that this is best accomplished in the service of developing these capacities. For over thirty years, Lincoln Center Institute has been pursuing aesthetic education as defined by the educational philosopher Maxine Greene. Recently, as the Institute began to further define and explore its work, we developed the Capacities for Imaginative Learning, which can be cultivated not only through the study of artworks, but across the curriculum. The origin of these capacities in the Institute's work at the High School for Arts, Imagination and Inquiry, their relationship to general conceptions of the imagination, and their applicability in the elementary grades are outlined. This article describes the beginnings of research on the nature and efficacy of the Capacities in fostering learning across the curriculum. Additionally, research questions are posed at the elementary level.

Abstract:In the recent decades art education has tried to move away from the trends based on practical skills and techniques towards a greater stress on interpreting and understanding visual culture, created by the mass media. This approach implies a revision of the field of study and a redefinition of goals, replacing the study of art with a study of ‘visual culture’, a concept that better describes the daily environment of students and which reorientates art education towards social and cultural awareness. In this article, starting from Dewey's conception of art as experience, a theoretical framework is offered based on three ideas. Firstly, the subject of art education involves aesthetic experience, which includes both ‘high’ art and popular culture. Secondly, it is necessary to reconstruct the balance between understanding and production in art education, in order to consider art products as narratives, stories or comments about life experiences. Thirdly, to review the educational function of art education in order to determinate its value for social reconstruction and for which Rorty calls ‘self‐creation’.

Abstract:This article explores the possibilities of queer theory in art education, and I playfully, perhaps provocatively, ask how art education can help kids turn out queer. Moving away from both victim narratives of queer subjects and the attention on gay artists, who often are the focus of scholarship in art education, I contemplate the ways in which art education researchers address queerness and how those forms of address impact the relations that are (im)possible within the educational dynamic. I ask, “In what ways has queer been addressed in art education research, and how can other scholars push forward with such work to continue queer projects?” I observe a need to challenge fears around queer topics and contemplate how queerness, embedded in theory and practice, disputes and disrupts art education research.

Abstract:Three art education researchers conceptualize ethical considerations in conducting research with Indigenous peoples, people of color, and minoritized groups. Three critical dimensions of ethical research emerged: reflexivity, reciprocity, and racialism. We consider how the demands to be successful in academia are at odds with ethical futures. With our examples, we suggest ways to resist academic privilege by foregrounding participants' subjugated and unofficial knowledges. We suggest that more equitable frameworks might be developed by acknowledging intrinsic power dynamics and working toward partnerships from start to finish. We argue that by articulating and acknowledging ethical research praxis, those who have achieved academic success are in the best position to challenge and change interlocking injustices in academia.

Abstract:This study seeks to reveal the perceptions of pre-service visual arts teachers on social justice through art-based practices focused on social justice. Designing on visual phenomenology, this study was performed in the fall semester of the 2018-2019 academic year. Five different activities involving visual inquiries are presented to reveal the perceptions of the pre-service teachers on social justice. The research participants are 35 (13 male, 22 female) sophomore-level pre-service teachers. The data are obtained through course documents, reflective diaries and semi-structured interviews. The data are then analysed through content analysis; reliability and validity are ensured through triangulation. This study identifies four different themes: association, questioning, transformation and reflection. The findings show that the pre-service teachers questioned common issues related to social justice. It was observed in the activities performed in this study that the pre-service teachers identified the visual themes. They mentioned common social justice issues based on the things they experienced and their observations. These are such as women's rights, violence against women, children's rights, LGBT, animal rights, language and religion differences, income imbalance, racism, and discrimination. The issues they questioned were the direct expression of the individual experiences of the pre-service teachers through visuals.
Curriculum Change in the Postcolonial Art History Classroom: A Case Study

Abstract:Decolonised curricula in higher education continue to be a significant issue in the South African context following the student-led protests of 2015–2016. These protests revealed the urgent need for real transformation in the sector and the wide-ranging issues students encountered, including demands for decolonised curricula. In this article I focus on one postgraduate art history course and its curriculum to discuss how postcolonial and decolonial theories both advanced opportunities and presented limitations for students in the programme. The insights are presented as potentially illustrative of some of the challenges in the sector. The article draws on findings from an analysis of one course, titled Post/Decolonial Art History (PDCAH), offered in 2015, which revealed that the course was not sufficiently able to respond to political calls for pedagogical decolonisation at the time. These findings are positioned in relation to subsequent developments in the course. I argue that a more responsive and dynamic approach to pedagogical requirements and changing student contexts is necessary in order to more robustly decolonise the art history curriculum. The article concludes by suggesting that this responsiveness and dynamism remain difficult to navigate within the existing structures of curriculum design, course outcomes, and the complex range of student expectations.
Art Historical Appropriation in a Visual Culture-Based Art Education

Abstract:Critical art histories have strategically contributed to the constitution of visual culture studies as an interdisciplinary field that interprets the mediations of massproduced imagery in contemporary culture. This article advocates for an antihistoricist perspective of art historical knowledge connected to cultural analysis and centered on the present time. It presents an approach to art as a contingent visual event that responds to theoretical and political emergencies and urgencies in specific times and contexts. The article conceptualizes a pedagogy of art historical appropriation that situates the learner as a critical examiner of cultural legacies, inherited genealogies, and repressed memories. Three instances of art historical appropriation (autobiography, archival work, and global narratives), inspired in the work of contemporary artists, art historians, and curators, are analyzed as possible contributions to a visual culture-based art education.

Challenges, implications and the future of the Australian Curriculum: The Arts

Abstract:This paper will explore the key findings identified in the five arts discipline-specific papers which comprise this special theme issue. Each of the participant researchers have situated Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts within the context of the Australian Curriculum: The Arts and what they characterise as its social justice imperatives. A narrative phenomenological approach has been adopted to enable the participant researchers to socially co-construct an analysis of their experiences working with the Australian Curriculum: The Arts including challenges, implications and the future for their respective discipline areas and the Arts overall. The three key themes from these collective voices revealed a quality arts education is an entitlement for every child and young person; the Arts provide important opportunities for children and young people from diverse backgrounds and cultures to demonstrate their learning, express themselves and participate; and arts educators and the Arts industry need to work together to strengthen community understanding about the value of the Arts in education. This process provided important insights into how exposure and engagement with the Arts shape the ways in which children and young people make meaning in their lives, enhance their overall wellbeing, increase their sense of social responsibility and contribute to a socially-just society.

Abstract:Within the last few years, the discourses of authoritarianism and the echoes of a fascist past have moved from the margins to the center of politics across the globe. Increasingly, pedagogy has been implicated in this process by becoming less a practice for freedom than an instrumentalized theory and practice for domination, particularly as the culture of education has been transformed to serve the culture of business or reduced to a regressive form of instrumental rationality. This lecture challenges this reactionary mode of education and pedagogy, particularly in its neoliberal versions, and explores how critical pedagogy might provide the theoretical and practical foundation for rethinking the purpose of education and the nature of politics itself, and how these two realms are inseparable. As a moral and political practice, pedagogy is represents not only a struggle over knowledge and values, but also over agency itself. Central to any viable notion of a critical pedagogy is the understanding that pedagogy is always a deliberate attempt on the part of educators to influence how and what knowledge and subjectivities are produced within particular sets of social relations. In this case, it draws attention to the ways in which knowledge, power, desire, and experience are produced under specific basic conditions of learning and in doing so rejects the notion that teaching is just a method or is removed from matters of values, norms, and power. In addition, central to such a task is rethinking the role of educators as public intellectuals and their responsibility not only to address crucial social problems but also to interrogate critically what it might mean to produce those pedagogical practices and formative cultures that are essential to any substantive democracy. An important issue addressed in this case is that pedagogy is always a moral and political practice and points not only to a struggle over agency and power, but also presupposes discourses of critique and possibility as part of a broader democratic project deeply implicated in addressing matters of economic and social justice and the grounds upon which life is lived and experienced.
