Abstract:The oxygen carriers (OCs) have recently been investigated for application in biomass chemical looping gasification. This research focuses on the reduction kinetics of newly developed iron ore-based OC pellets during the gasification of radiata pine sawdust. The solid-solid reaction between the OC and residual char mainly occurs at temperatures between 900 and 1195 °C with two successive reduction reactions (Fe2O3 → Fe3O4 → Fe), exhibited as two consecutive peaks in the differential thermogravimetric (DTG) curve. Gaussian peak fitting characterises these two peaks to separate them into two independent processes by assuming a final weight for the first peak and an initial weight for the second peak. Consequently, the Malek method, a model-fitting approach, can be applied to determine the kinetic mechanisms for each stage. The results obtained from the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method, a model-free method, are consistent with the kinetic parameters from the above model-fitting work. The conclusion from the above separate study is validated by treating the two peaks above as a whole process using the Coats-Redfern method, also a model-fitting method. According to the final validation results, the reduction of OC pellets by char is dominated by random nucleation and nuclei growth for the conversion degree (α) from 0.05 to 0.6, which covers the first solid-solid reaction and the initial second solid-solid reaction. Subsequently, the reduction mechanism is shifted to chemical reaction for the α value from 0.6 to 0.95. The corresponding activation energies for these two reaction mechanisms are 698.28 (Avrami-Erofeev equation, 2/3 order) and 847.01 kJ·mol-1 (Reaction order, 5/2 order). The complex crystalline structure of OC pellets is associated with the kinetics results.
