Tunable solvents utilising carbon dioxide lend themselves to a reduction in work-up solvent and can help avoid the need for energy intensive solvent recovery options such as distillation. This perspective examines the potential beneflts of tunable solvents to the chemical manufacturing industry and the environment. Freed from the usual reliance on distillation, high boiling solvents with an inherently lessened potential to cause air emissions can be used as part of a tunable solvent system. Abstract:Pretreatment process is considered as the most important step for effective microalgae biomass refining and has gained more interest since last decades. However, the main obstacles to commercialize microalgae products are recalcitrant cell wall and lack of cost-effective, green, and sustainable pretreatment approaches. Till now, various microalgae pretreatment approaches have been applied prior to extraction steps to enhance the accessibility of solvent inside the cells. However, high energy consumption and the hazardousness of solvents are considerable problem for these pretreatment methods. In this regard, deep eutectic solvents are recognized as sustainable and green solvents possessing great potential for microalgae biomass processing due to their low toxicity, low cost, biodegradability, easy recycling, and reuse. This article provides the fundamentals of DES composition, synthesis, properties, and the current advances in the application of microalgae biomass process.

Abstract:In recent years, almost all extraction processes in the perfume, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food ingredients, nutraceuticals, biofuel and fine chemical industries rely massively on solvents, the majority of which have petroleum origins. The intricate processing steps involved in the industrial extraction cycle makes it increasingly difficult to predict the overall environmental impact; despite the tremendous energy consumption and the substantial usage of solvents, often the yields are indicated in decimals. The ideal alternative solvents suitable for green extraction should have high solvency, high flash points with low toxicity and low environmental impacts, be easily biodegradable, obtained from renewable (non-petrochemical) resources at a reasonable price and should be easy to recycle without any deleterious effect to the environment. Finding the perfect solvent that meets all the aforementioned requirements is a challenging task, thus the decision for the optimum solvent will always be a compromise depending on the process, the plant and the target molecules. The objective of this comprehensive review is to furnish a vivid picture of current knowledge on alternative, green solvents used in laboratories and industries alike for the extraction of natural products focusing on original methods, innovation, protocols, and development of safe products.

Abstract:Sustainable and/or green chemistry has become an avenue that provides ways of developing an efficient complex chemical synthesis of structural diversity and molecules of high added value. Chemistry being the central science might play a crucial role in ensuring that our future generation of materials, chemicals, energy, synthesis, and solvents are more sustainable, reproducible, and reliable than the current generation. The major problem faced by most current chemical manufacturing processes and pharmaceutical industries is lack of efficiency in using raw materials and producing large amount of wastes, mainly from the solvents. Efficient methods of synthesis require the assemblage of complex molecular motifs or arrays including reactions that are both selective (such as chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, diastereoselectivity, enantioselectivity) and economical in atom count (such as maximum number of atoms of reactants appearing in the products). Elimination of solvents in chemical manufacturing processes, industries, and reaction synthesis or the replacement of hazardous solvents with environmentally benign solvents are some of the key areas of Green Chemistry. In this review, the major factors for deriving environmentally sustainable processes in the multicomponent reactions (MCRs), synthesis of medicinal and/or pharmaceutical intermediates, and products using greener solvent and water are discussed. This review has summarized applications of synthesis, MCRs, and surfactant-mediated chemistry in water to a select number of reaction types that underpin the discovery, development, and manufacture of pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:The quest for sustainable and environmentally friendly fuel feedstocks has led to the exploration of green solvents for the extraction of bio-oil from various biomass sources. This review paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and future research outlooks for different categories of green extraction solvents, including bio-based solvents, water-based solvents, supercritical fluids, and deep eutectic solvents (DES). The background of each solvent category is discussed, highlighting their potential advantages and limitations. Challenges such as biomass feedstock sourcing, cost fluctuations, solvent properties variability, limited compatibility, solute solubility, high costs, and potential toxicity are identified and examined in detail. To overcome these challenges, future research should focus on alternative and abundant feedstock sources, the development of improved solubility and separation techniques, optimization of process parameters, cost-effective equipment design, standardization of DES compositions, and comprehensive toxicological studies. By addressing these challenges and advancing research in these areas, the potential of green extraction solvents can be further enhanced, promoting their widespread adoption and contributing to more sustainable and environmentally friendly industrial processes.

Abstract:Large amounts of agri-food by-products, non-edible food, and waste are produced throughout the supply chain from the initial production to the final consumption stages. The valorization of this biomass to obtain high value-added compounds has been the focus of extensive research in the last decade. For this purpose, the use of green techniques is essential to reduce the negative impact on the health and the environment. In this review, we discuss the use of green solvents for the valorization of agri-food waste and by-products, and we consider their potential to replace conventional organic solvents in order to provide more environmentally friendly and sustainable processes. The use of supercritical fluids, neoteric (ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents), bio-based, and supramolecular solvents is critically dicussed. Parameters affecting extraction efficiency are detailed for each type of solvent along with advantages and limitations for application at the industrial scale.

Abstract:Form past till now, green chemistry has been considered as a promising technique for the organic synthesis of materials toward environmental sustainability and economic development. The prominent duties of green chemistry are the enhancement of production efficacy and decrement of waste generation during the operation. In order to implement this process in industries, important green strategies like avoiding waste production, application of catalytic amount of catalyst, reduction of energy consumption and eventually, employment of renewable /bio-degradable substances must be paid attention. The industrial-based application of ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents and nanofluids have recently been of great interest as eco-friendly, bio-degradable and green materials, which significantly improve the efficiency of green synthesis of organic materials. This paper aims to comprehensively review the breakthrough and cutting-edge methodologies for sustainable and green synthesis of organic materials. Then after, the advantages, performance and the mechanism of action for each technique are explained and the environmental challenges toward their efficient industrial application are discussed in detail.

Abstract:The use of designer surfactants to facilitate chemical transformations in water is a prime example for the knowledge transfer from academia to industry. Accordingly, chemistry in aqueous media aided by surfactants has emerged as a viable alternative to the use of organic solvents as part of the effort to transform chemical manufacturing into a green art. While classical metrics indicate tremendous savings on waste generation, a more exhaustive analysis including the intrinsic carbon footprint of such surfactants has never been conducted. The present work addresses this topic and outlines this analysis as part of a case study on the example of a widely known and applied working-horse of surfactant chemistry, TPGS-750-M. Meanwhile, the fate of the employed water is considered, and a holistic comparison to organic solvents is drawn. The key for a streamlined assessment is the reflected use of proper metrics, clearly pointing out a nonzero carbon footprint of such chemistries in aqueous media, though the techniques range at the greener end of the scale of reaction media.

Abstract:Over the past decades, awareness of the increase in environmental impact due to industrial development and technological advancement has gradually increased. Green manufacturing is one of the key approaches that begin to address environmental issues. With the current global attention, methodologies to incorporate green manufacturing into the design of green products through the green process route are much needed. However, it is challenging for industries to achieve this, as there is no definite definition of green. This work presents a systematic approach that provides a clear and consistent green manufacturing definition with a measurement method in terms of both product and process. With the consistent green definitions, the developed approach designs a product that satisfies green property and other product performance properties. In addition, the developed approach synthesises the production process that fulfils green manufacturing definitions and financial considerations for the designed product. A case study on the design and production of green biofuel is solved to illustrate the efficacy of the approach. Green product design is obtained by identifying molecular building blocks that fulfil the targeted properties using an inverse molecular design technique. The goal is to design a chemical product that is environmentally friendly while fulfilling customer requirements. Moreover, a superstructural mathematical optimisation approach is used to determine optimal conversion pathways that have minimal environmental impact on the production of the identified green product. The utilisation of multi-objective optimisation allows the design of product and process to strike a good balance between operational and environmental performances.

Abstract:Developing new green solvents is one of the key subjects in Green Chemistry. Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents, thus, have been paid great attention to replace current harsh organic solvents and have been applied to many chemical processing such as extraction and synthesis. However, current ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents have still limitations to be applied to a real chemical industry due to toxicity against human and environment and high cost of ILs and solid state of most deep eutectic solvents at room temperature. Recently we discovered that many plant abundant primary metabolites changed their state from solid to liquid when they were mixed in proper ratio. This finding made us hypothesize that natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) play a role as alternative media to water in living organisms and tested a wide range of natural products, which resulted in discovery of over 100 NADES from nature. In order to prove deep eutectic feature the interaction between the molecules was investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. All the tested NADES show clear hydrogen bonding between components. As next step physical properties of NADES such as water activity, density, viscosity, polarity and thermal properties were measured as well as the effect of water on the physical properties. In the last stage the novel NADES were applied to the solubilization of wide range of biomolecules such as non-water soluble bioactive natural products, gluten, starch, and DNA. In most cases the solubility of the biomolecules evaluated in this study was greatly higher than water. Based on the results the novel NADES may be expected as potential green solvents at room temperature in diverse fields of chemistry.

Abstract:The worrying and constant increase in the quantities of food and beverage industry by-products and wastes is one of the main factors contributing to global environmental pollution. Since this is a direct consequence of continuous population growth, it is imperative to reduce waste production and keep it under control. Re-purposing agro-industrial wastes, giving them new life and new directions of use, is a good first step in this direction, and, in global food production, vegetables and fruits account for a significant percentage. In this paper, brewery waste, cocoa bean shells, banana and citrus peels and pineapple wastes are examined. These are sources of bioactive molecules such as polyphenols, whose regular intake in the human diet is related to the prevention of various diseases linked to oxidative stress. In order to recover such bioactive compounds using more sustainable methods than conventional extraction, innovative solutions have been evaluated in the past decades. Of particular interest is the use of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and compressed solvents, associated with green techniques such as microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and pulsed-electric-field-assisted extraction (PEF). These novel techniques are gaining importance because, in most cases, they allow for optimizing the extraction yield, quality, costs and time.

Abstract:Green chemistry is focused on replacement or reduction of common materials which are the reason of ecosystem damages. Organic solvents are the main culprit of volatile organic compound (VOC) emission into the atmosphere. Therefore, different environmentally friendly solvents have replaced them. Alternative solvents should decrease the negative impact of organic solvents into the environment. Green solvents like water, ionic liquids (ILs), fluorous solvents, supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2), bio-solvents, and organic carbonates are reviewed in this chapter for organic synthesis. Although water is an ideal medium for plenty of reactions, ionic liquids and fluorous solvents are suitable for reactions which cannot accomplish in supercritical carbon dioxide or water. Reaction rates are so high in supercritical carbon dioxide due to its properties which are intermediate between those of a liquid or gas. While organic carbonates are used for medical, pharmaceutical, and extraction applications, bio-solvents are applied in cleaning agents, cosmetic, and agricultural chemicals.
Alternative green solvents associated with ultrasound-assisted extraction: A green chemistry approach for the extraction of carotenoids and chlorophylls from microalgae

Abstract:This study proposes a method for the ultrasonic extraction of carotenoids and chlorophyll from Scenedesmus obliquus and Arthrospira platensis microalgae with green solvents. Ethanol and ethanolic solutions of ionic liquids were tested with a variety of extraction parameters, including number of extractions, time of extraction, and solid-liquid ratio R(S/L), to determine the optimal conditions. After selecting the most effective green solvent (ethanol), the process conditions were established: R(S/L) of 1:10, three extraction cycles at 3 min each), giving an extraction yield of 2602.36 and 764.21 μgcarotenoids.gdried biomass-1; and 22.01 and 5.81 mgchlorophyll.gdried biomass-1 in S. obliquus and A. platensis, respectively. The carotenoid and chlorophyll extracts obtained using ethanol were shown to be potent scavengers of peroxyl radical, being 5.94 to 26.08 times more potent α-tocopherol. These findings pave the way for a green strategy for valorizing microalgal biocompounds through efficient and environmentally friendly technological processes.

Abstract:The concept of sustainable development has impacted in analytical chemistry changing the way of thinking processes and methods. It is important for analytical chemists to consider how sample preparation can integrate the basic concepts of Green Chemistry. In this sense, the replacement of traditional organic solvents is of utmost importance. Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) have come to light as a green alternative. In the last few years, a growing number of contributions have applied these natural solvents proving their efficiency in terms of extraction ability, analyte stabilization capacity and detection compatibility. However, the arising question that has to be answered is: the use of NADES is enough to green an extraction process? This review presents an overview of knowledge regarding sustainability of NADES-based extraction procedures, focused on reported literature within the timeframe spanning from 2011 up to date. The contributions were analyzed from a green perspective in terms of energy, time, sample and solvent consumption. Moreover, we include a critical analysis to clarify whether the use of NADES as extraction media is enough for greening an analytical methodology; strategies to make them even greener are also presented. Finally, recent trends and future perspectives on how NADES-based extraction approaches in combination with computational methodologies can contribute are discussed.

Abstract:Nutritional oils (mainly omega-3 fatty acids) are receiving increased attention as critical supplementary compounds for the improvement and maintenance of human health and wellbeing. However, the predominant sources of these oils have historically shown numerous limitations relating to desirability and sustainability; hence the crucial focus is now on developing smarter, greener, and more environmentally favourable alternatives. This study was undertaken to consider and assess the numerous prevailing and emerging techniques implicated across the stages of fatty acid downstream processing. A structured and critical comparison of the major classes of disruption methodology (physical, chemical, thermal, and biological) is presented, with discussion and consideration of the viability of new extraction techniques. Owing to a greater desire for sustainable industrial practices, and a desperate need to make nutritional oils more available; great emphasis has been placed on the discovery and adoption of highly sought-after 'green' alternatives, which demonstrate improved efficiency and reduced toxicity compared to conventional practices. Based on these findings, this review also advocates new forays into application of novel nanomaterials in fatty acid separation to improve the sustainability of nutritional oil downstream processing. In summary, this review provides a detailed overview of the current and developing landscape of nutritional oil; and concludes that adoption and refinement of these sustainable alternatives could promptly allow for development of a more complete 'green' process for nutritional oil extraction; allowing us to better meet worldwide needs without costing the environment.

Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents (DES) advanced in the past decade as the new generation of green and sustainable extraction and reaction media in biorefineries and in a multitude of chemical and biotechnological processes. Particularly, enzyme catalyzed reactions benefit from the specific properties of DESs, which not only ensure good substrate solubility but also enhance enzyme stability and operational efficiency. Recent studies showed that natural deep eutectic solvents comprising choline chloride or betaine as hydrogen bond acceptor and a large spectrum of natural compounds, such as carbohydrates, polyols carboxylic acids, as hydrogen bond donors, can have multiple functions, acting simultaneously as extraction solvent, reaction medium, source of substrate and source as catalyst. This novel approach for the utilization of multifunctional reactive natural deep eutectic solvents (R‐NADES) in catalytic conversions opens the way to the development of greener biocatalytic and chemo‐catalytic processes, with simpler downstream processing and minimal discarded wastes, which will speed up their durable implementation in industry. This paper reviews the innovative applications of R‐NADES in biocatalytic reactions for the synthesis of a large diversity of high value chemicals and materials, including biosurfactants, flavors, biobased building blocks and biobased polymers, with highlight on esterification, transesterification, glycerolysis, polymerization, and redox reactions.

Abstract:Evaluating environmental sustainability is essential for determining the possible benefits of utilizing eco-friendly actions. There is increasing interest in analytical chemistry in developing and using environmentally friendly extraction processes. This review explores the advent and importance of green adsorbents as extractive materials in analytical chemistry applications. Sustainable green adsorbents from renewable sources provide an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional extraction techniques, reducing adverse environmental impacts and supporting a circular economy. This review focuses on various green adsorbents, including natural adsorbents, synthetic adsorbents like molecular imprinted polymers, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic framework, nanomaterials, and carbon-based materials and their applications. Furthermore, green adsorbents are integrated with the principles of green analytical chemistry (GAC), which prioritizes reducing or eliminating harmful reagents and solvents. As the scientific community continues to prioritize sustainable practices, adopting green sorbents in analytical chemistry holds promise for advancing both environmental stewardship and analytical methodologies.

Abstract:Abstract Solvents are important in most industrial and domestic applications. The impact of solvent losses and emissions drives efforts to minimise them or to avoid them completely. Since the 1990s, this has become a major focus of green chemistry, giving rise to the idea of the ‘green’ solvent. This concept has generated a substantial chemical literature and has led to the development of so-called neoteric solvents. A critical overview of published material establishes that few new materials have yet found widespread use as solvents. The search for less-impacting solvents is inefficient if carried out without due regard, even at the research stage, to the particular circumstances under which solvents are to be used on the industrial scale. Wider sustainability questions, particularly the use of non-fossil sources of organic carbon in solvent manufacture, are more important than intrinsic ‘greenness’. While solvency is universal, a universal solvent, an alkahest, is an unattainable ideal.

Abstract:In this study, an optimized environmentally friendly procedure was employed to enhance the sustainable utilization of phenolic antioxidants derived from aloe vera rind by-products. The procedure involved the application of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) in combination with deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Eleven different DESs and three conventional solvents were employed as extraction media for polyphenolic compounds. Choline chloride–citric acid (ChCl-CA) was selected as the most suitable extractant, considering its extraction efficiency in relation to the total phenolic content. The operating conditions of UAE were optimized and modeled by the use of response surface methodology in order to maximize the yield of total phenolics and antioxidant capacity. The optimal operational parameters for the UAE procedure were determined to be 16.5 min, 74% (v/v) DES in water, and a solvent-to-solid ratio equal to 192. HPLC analysis, which was performed on the optimum extract, revealed significant levels of phenolics present in the aloe rind. Efficient recovery of the extracted antioxidants was obtained by the use of solid-phase extraction (SPE) and polyamide cartridges. The ChCl-CA DES exhibited excellent recycling capability with a yield of over 90% through SPE. Finally, the greenness of the method was evaluated using the green AGREE and AGREEprep metrics. The results highlighted the sustainability and the greenness of the proposed extraction procedure for the aloe by-product.
