Abstract:Drought is a natural phenomenon that occurred in Central Europe in the past, but it is becoming a more serious problem due to the changes in its occurrence and intensity related to climate change. The main aim of this paper was to determine changes in air temperature and precipitation amounts in Slovakia from 1931 to 2020 and to identify changes in drought occurrence and intensity using the Standardised Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Cluster analysis was used to determine regions with similar drought occurrences. For each of the identified five clusters, drought characteristics were determined and compared between two reference periods 1961–1990 and 1991–2020. While a decrease in the number of months with SPEI-1 below − 1 was observed in autumn, spring and summer months showed a drying tendency. Overall, we can say that we observed a shift in drought occurrence from autumn and winter months to spring and summer months. This is an important finding for the agriculture or forestry because it affects work management and planning. The clearest tendency in drought events was observed in the western part of Slovakia covering areas with agriculturally intensive land use. Besides prolonging drought events, there was also a higher accumulated deficit for each event. The increase in drought intensity was not spatially consistent over the cluster area, mostly reaching a slight decline of about − 0.1 to − 0.3, which means slight intensification of drought periods in 1991–2020.

Abstract:Abstract With respect to the necessity of comprehensive studies on drought and also high damages that caused by drought, this research studied the meteorological and hydrological droughts. In this study, Lighvan, Navroud and Seqez basins with different climates were selected. We used monthly data of stream flow, precipitation and evaporation from 1992 to 2016 for the study of drought phenomena. The aim at this study is to analyze the SPI and SPEI for determination of dry and wet meteorological periods and use of the SSI for the exploration of hydrological drought. The analysis of drought characteristics such as intensity and duration in three areas with different climates shows that the climate change has a major impact on the characteristics of the droughts. The relations between the duration and severity of drought have been more accurate in the period of 9 months in the Navroud watershed basin. The most significant events are SPI-9 with the duration of 57 months and the severity of 34.7, SPEI-9 with the duration of 34 months and the severity of 28.09 and SSI-9 with the duration of 41 months and the severity of 30.2. According to the obtained equations in different time periods, it was resulted that the highest accuracy was observed in the relationship between the meteorological and hydrological drought characteristics in the watershed basin of Seqez for a period of 6 months. The results show that in all three basins, the correlation between the meteorological and hydrological drought is significant at the level of 99%. Results show that hydrological and meteorological droughts in Navroud and Lighvan basins have a significant correlation with 48-month periods and in the Seqez basin with 12- and 24-month periods, and the relations between hydrological droughts and meteorological droughts were obtained using the nonlinear linear models (polynomial, exponential and logarithmic). The good R 2 between the duration and severity of SPI-9 and SSI-9 is 0.8 and 0.92, respectively, for polynomial equations. The maximum determination coefficient of duration and severity of SPEI-9 and SSI-9 is 0.72 and 0.82, respectively, using polynomial equation. The application of several indices indicating different components of the hydrological cycle integrates many factors that affect and trigger droughts, and thus can help in providing a wider realization of the characteristics of droughts on various water sections.

Abstract:This study focuses on the assessment of drought severity, employing a comparative analysis between the normalized multi-band drought index (NMDI; calculated using Sentinel-2 imagery) and the combined drought indicator (CDI). The research aims to pinpoint the most accurate and reliable remote sensing techniques, which reflect ground-based measurements, thereby enhancing the precision of drought monitoring systems. By investigating the specific area of Małopolska, the study not only contributes to the global knowledge base on drought assessment methodologies but also addresses the regional needs for improved drought management practices. Through an exhaustive analysis correlating satellite-derived indices with in situ meteorological data, this research elucidates the potential of integrating NMDI and CDI for a comprehensive understanding of drought dynamics in Małopolska. In particular, the indices depict different dynamics of drought levels, as well as the location of regions more prone to its occurrence. The findings are poised to advance drought monitoring capabilities, offering significant insights for agricultural sustainability and water resource management in the region.

Abstract:Drought is one of the most critical environmental hazards for the viability and productive development of crops, especially in a climate change environment. To this end, drought assessment is a process of paramount importance to make vulnerable agricultural regions more resilient. The primary aim of this paper is an integrated drought assessment through time and space in one of the most susceptible (in terms of water availability limitations) and agriculturally productive regions in Greece and the Mediterranean, namely, the Thessaly region. Supplementary objectives consist of the determination of the two most extreme years in terms of drought and wetness, so that we may reveal any potential climatological cycles/patterns from 1981 to 2020. Additionally, the methodology includes the annual and seasonal analysis using one of the most widely used drought indices, namely, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), so that consistent measurements are available across a large study area, avoiding the possible scarcity/deficiency of data coming from a sparse land weather network. The innovative element of this paper is the integrated spatiotemporal drought assessment in multiple time scales through the estimation of the SPI making use of remotely sensed data, such as CHIRPS (Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station data). The outcomes highlight that the study area faced two severe years of drought in 1988 and 1989, which led to moderate and extreme drought conditions, respectively. In contrast, extremely wet conditions were observed in 2002–2003, whereas 2009–2010 experienced moderately wet conditions. The central and western part of the region tends to suffer the most in terms of drought severity, especially at the most extreme years. The validity of the results has been confirmed by the adoption of R2 where the index is approaching 0.67 despite the large size of the pixels (5 × 5 km). In this context, the mapping of spatial and seasonal variability across the study area permits more targeted measures (e.g., precision farming) instead of horizontal policies.

Abstract:Abstract In the future, according to regional climate-model simulations, the Carpathian Basin (in Central Europe) is predicted to be exposed to intensifying weather extremes that will exert a growing pressure on water resources. In recent past decades, water already has become a significant limiting factor for the natural environment and many agro-economic sectors in the southern Carpathian Basin. Therefore, there are increasing attempts to develop monitoring systems to detect water stress. In this study, changes in soil moisture conditions were monitored within two Arenosol profiles of extreme water balance during years characterised by different hydrologic conditions and under the impact of irrigation in the Great Hungarian Plain. Hourly data series of hydrometeorological parameters and soil moisture from six different soil depths during 2014–2018 were provided by on-site monitoring stations; humus, carbonate content, porosity, field capacity and wilting point were measured in the laboratory. On the basis of the newly definied so-called ‘available water percent’ (AW%) and a developed classification method, the rate, time and duration of water-shortage periods were evaluated for the years 2014–2018. The results show that drought monitoring cannot be effective without investigation of soil moisture content. Detailed analysis of available water percentage (AW%) can be used for real-time drought monitoring and as a precise indicator of the evolution of drought. This can help us prevent and manage damage from drought, and it is extremely important for agriculture.

Abstract:In this study, the emphasis is on assessing how satellite-derived vegetation indices respond to drought stress characterized by meteorological observations. This study aimed to understand the dynamics of grassland vegetation and assess the impact of drought in the Wielkopolskie (PL41) and Podlaskie (PL84) regions of Poland. Spatial and temporal characteristics of grassland dynamics regarding drought occurrences from 2020 to 2023 were examined. Pearson correlation coefficients with standard errors were used to analyze vegetation indices, including NDVI, NDII, NDWI, and NDDI, in response to drought, characterized by the meteorological parameter the Hydrothermal Coefficient of Selyaninov (HTC), along with ground-based soil moisture measurements (SM). Among the vegetation indices studied, NDDI showed the strongest correlations with HTC at r = −0.75, R2 = 0.56, RMSE = 1.58, and SM at r = −0.82, R2 = 0.67, and RMSE = 16.33. The results indicated drought severity in 2023 within grassland fields in Wielkopolskie. Spatial–temporal analysis of NDDI revealed that approximately 50% of fields were at risk of drought during the initial decades of the growing season in 2023. Drought conditions intensified, notably in western Poland, while grasslands in northeastern Poland showed resilience to drought. These findings provide valuable insights for individual farmers through web and mobile applications, assisting in the development of strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of drought on grasslands and thereby reduce associated losses.

Abstract:Drought is a natural hazard that affects environmental and socio-economic development. In this study, the Water Surplus Variability Index (WSVI), which is based on both precipitation and Penman-Monteith (PM) evapotranspiration (ET) estimates, was used to quantify drought. The application of the WSVI is not possible in some locations because of the missing data for estimating ET. The key objectives of this research were to 1. compare the different temperature-based WSVIs for the 1-, 3-, 6- and 12-month timescales with the original PM-based WSVI; 2. improve the WSVI by replacing the full-set PM equation with the corresponding temperature-based ET equation, such as Hargreaves, adjusted Hargreaves, Thornthwaite, modified Thornthwaite or temperature-based PM; and 3. compare the best temperature-based WSVI with the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). The set of meteorological data was obtained from several stations from Pannonian Basin (Budapest, Debrecen, Novi Sad and Sombor). According to statistical indicators, the Hargreaves-based WSVI (WSVIH) was ranked first or second for each time period at all locations. The WSVIH was additionally tested using the SPI for each location and each timescale. The obtained results indicated the capability of the WSVIH to quantify drought frequency, duration and severity identified by the SPI. Finally, the WSVI can be recommended using the Hargreaves equation instead of the full-set PM equation in future WSVI implementations in the Pannonian Basin.

Abstract:Abstract The occurrence of drought during flowering (usually from the end of May to the beginning of June) is the most hazardous timing in terms of the possible negative impact of agricultural drought on winter wheat, which is the most cultivated crop in the Czech Republic (about 800000 ha). Lack of water, often accompanied by high temperatures, negatively affects the number of grains in the wheat ear and the tissue development of the developing grain, with consequent impacts on yield and quality of product. With the use of a) long-term time series of agrometeorological data (1961–2010), b) long-term phenological time series of winter wheat (1981–2010), and c) soil conditions data (available water capacity of soils of the Czech Republic) for the arable soil, the ratio of actual evapotranspiration and potential evapotranspiration for the period of 1961–2010, used as an indicator of agricultural drought (lack of water) for wheat, was calculated. The innovative aspect of this categorization of the territory of the Czech Republic according to the risk of occurrence of agricultural drought for winter wheat is considering drought from the aspect of the plant, i.e., evaluation based on the actual consumption of water by the vegetation. This is a very sophisticated procedure. Frequently, water content in soils data, presented as an output of some models, do not fully indicate the possible negative impacts on yield generation because the plants themselves are typically not considered. The method used in this study is universally applicable and allows comparisons of regions at the local, regional, and supra-regional levels. For estimation of the development of agronomic drought in the future, the basic water balances in the growing seasons of 1961–2010 and 2071–2100 were compared using a climate scenario. The forecast indicates a significant deterioration of agricultural drought in the region with probable direct impacts on agricultural production.
Assessment of Soil Moisture Anomaly Sensitivity to Detect Drought Spatio-Temporal Variability in Romania

Abstract:This paper will assess the sensitivity of soil moisture anomaly (SMA) obtained from the Soil water index (SWI) product Metop ASCAT, to identify drought in Romania. The SWI data were converted from relative values (%) to absolute values (m3 m-3) using the soil porosity method. The conversion results (SM) were validated using soil moisture in situ measurements from ISMN at 5 cm depths (2015-2020). The SMA was computed based on a 10 day SWI product, between 2007 and 2020. The analysis was performed for the depths of 5 cm (near surface), 40 cm (sub surface), and 100 cm (root zone). The standardized precipitation index (SPI), land surface temperature anomaly (LST anomaly), and normalized difference vegetation index anomaly (NDVI anomaly) were computed in order to compare the extent and intensity of drought events. The best correlations between SM and in situ measurements are for the stations located in the Getic Plateau (Bacles (r = 0.797) and Slatina (r = 0.672)), in the Western Plain (Oradea (r = 0.693)), and in the Moldavian Plateau (Iasi (r = 0.608)). The RMSE were between 0.05 and 0.184. Furthermore, the correlations between the SMA and SPI, the LST anomaly, and the NDVI anomaly were significantly registered in the second half of the warm season (July-September). Due to the predominantly agricultural use of the land, the results can be useful for the management of water resources and irrigation in regions frequently affected by drought.
Hydro-meteorological droughts across the Baltic Region: The role of the accumulation periods

Abstract:Based on the physical and geographical conditions, the Baltic Region is categorised as a humid climate zone. This means that, there is usually more precipitation than evaporation throughout the year, suggesting that droughts should not occur frequently in this region. Despite the humid climate in the region, the study focused on assessing the spatio-temporal patterns of droughts. The drought events were analysed across the Baltic Region, including Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. This analysis included two drought indices, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Streamflow Drought Index (SDI), for different accumulation periods. Daily data series of precipitation and river discharge were used. The spatial and temporal analyses of selected drought indices were carried out for the Baltic Region. In addition, the decadal distribution of drought classes was analysed to disclose the temporal changes and spatial extent of drought patterns. The Pearson correlation between SPI and SDI was applied to investigate the relationship between meteorological and hydrological droughts. The analysis showed that stations with more short-duration SPI or SDI cases had fewer long-duration cases and vice versa. The number of SDI cases (SDI ≤ -1) increased in the Western Baltic States and some WGSs in Sweden and Finland from 1991 to 2020 compared to 1961-1990. The SPI showed no such tendencies except in Central Estonia and Southern Finland. The 6-month accumulation period played a crucial role in both the meteorological and hydrological drought analyses, as it revealed prolonged and widespread drought events. Furthermore, the 9- and 12-month accumulation periods showed similar trends in terms of drought duration and spatial extent. The highest number of correlation links between different months was found between SPI12-SDI9 and SPI12-SDI12. The results obtained have deepened our understanding of drought patterns and their potential impacts in the Baltic Region.

Abstract:After 2000, Montenegro has been hit by several severe droughts. The results presented in this study were based on the analysis of the standardized precipitation index (SPI) and the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) for the period 1961–2020. They showed the prevalence of a negative trend in both indices and a significantly higher frequency of drought in the second half of the observed period (1991–2020). The SPEI index is a more representative indicator of drought, because in addition to precipitation, it also takes into account potential evapotranspiration. Using the rescaled adjusted partial sums (RAPS) method, it was determined that the tipping point when the SPEI suddenly fell was the mid-1980s. Out of the 15 analyzed teleconnection variation indicators (atmospheric and oceanic oscillations), 11 oscillations have a significant impact on one or more of the 24 analyzed SPEI time series. The consequences of the drought in Montenegro, as part of the Mediterranean, are most noticeable in the summer, primarily in the form of water shortages, dried vegetation, and frequent fires. Decision-makers in Montenegro should pay attention to this extreme, as drought could pose a serious problem under the projected warmer climate conditions.

Abstract:The European Space Agency (ESA) under the Climate Change Initiative (CCI) has developed a multi-satellite global, daily Soil Moisture (SM) dataset that has paved the ways for agricultural drought studies. To evaluate the performance of this ESACCI SM, two SM-based indices i.e. parametric distribution-based Standardized Soil Moisture Index (SSMI) and non-parametric distribution-based Empirical Standardized Soil Moisture Index (ESSMI) are computed to characterize agricultural drought in the Southern Plateau and Hills (SPH) in India from 1991 to 2020. SSMI and ESSMI are then compared with the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The yearly temporal analysis revealed a consistent pattern among all the four indices with 2003 and 2020 marked as the driest and wettest years, respectively. On the other hand, monthly temporal analysis indicated SSMI and ESSMI lagged behind SPI and ESSMI suggesting a delayed response of SM to precipitation. Spatial distributions of indices showed that the SM-based indices effectively capture temporal variations of dryness or wetness across seasons. The near normal and mild to moderate droughts predominated (both spatially and temporally) the SPH and SSMI better captured the extreme drought areas compared to ESSMI. Further, Dynamic Threshold Run Theory (DTRT) is introduced to identify and characterize drought events based on their duration, frequency, intensity and peak. The findings revealed a resemblance in spatial distribution between the duration and frequency. The drought peak and intensity revealed a moderate nature of drought conditions. Overall, this study highlights the effectiveness of ESACCI SM product to characterize the agricultural droughts.

Abstract:Drought is a global threat caused by the persistent challenges of climate change. It is important to identify drought conditions based on the weather variables and their patterns. In this study, we enhanced the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) by integrating ground temperature data to develop a more comprehensive metric for evaluating drought severity. Our metric offers a dual assessment of drought severity, taking into account both the intensity of the drought and its duration. We employ this evaluation in the primary paddy cultivation region of Sri Lanka, with the aim of shedding light on the prevailing drought conditions affecting paddy crops due to insufficient water supply and prolonged periods of elevated temperatures. Additionally, we calibrate our metric by aligning it with historical drought records and subsequently compare the outcomes with those derived from the conventional SPI index.

Abstract:This study examined the physical properties of agricultural drought (i.e., intensity, duration, and severity) in Hungary from 1961 to 2010 based on the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The study analyzed the interaction between drought and crop yield for maize and wheat using standardized yield residual series (SYRS), and the crop-drought resilient factor (CDRF). The results of both SPI and SPEI (-3, -6) showed that the western part of Hungary has significantly more prone to agricultural drought than the eastern part of the country. Drought frequency analysis reveals that the eastern, northern, and central parts of Hungary were the most affected regions. Drought analysis also showed that drought was particularly severe in Hungary during 1970–1973, 1990–1995, 2000–2003, and 2007. The yield of maize was more adversely affected than wheat especially in the western and southern regions of Hungary (1961–2010). In general, maize and wheat yields were severely non-resilient (CDRF < 0.8) in the central and western part of the country. The results suggest that drought events are a threat to the attainment of the second Sustainable Development Goals (SDG-2). Therefore, to ensure food security in Hungary and in other parts of the world, drought resistant crop varieties need to be developed to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on agricultural production.

Abstract:Assessing drought is a crucial component of effective drought risk management, stemming from diminished precipitation relative to the historical average, which subsequently impacts soil moisture and water reservoirs. The standard precipitation index (SPI) is commonly used to capture temporal and spatial variations. This research aims to evaluate the intensity, frequency, and duration of meteorological drought using SPI with time scales of 1, 3, 6, and 12 months in Herat Province, Afghanistan. The study encompasses 6 gauging stations with a 43-year record period in the region. The results show that with an increase in the time scale, the duration and frequency of drought increase. Additionally, the study reveals that the common extreme drought year for all stations was the year 2001, but the most extreme occurred in the year 2009 with an intensity two times greater than that of the year 2001. Due to the discrepancy of drought occurrence in each station, the findings suggest that for better drought management in the country, it is essential to analyze droughts in each local location. Over the past 43 years, the Cheldkhtaran station experienced the highest proportion of time in drought, accounting for 28.5%. Similarly, the Khosh Rabat station experienced droughts for 26.4%, the Nazdik-i-Herat station for 27.7%, the Pul-i-Hashemi station for 23.6%, and the Rabat-i-Akhund station for 26.9% of their respective time in the past 43 year.
Monitoring and Assessment of Drought Focused on Its Impact on Sorghum Yield over Sudan by Using Meteorological Drought Indices for the Period 2001–2011

Abstract:Currently, the high-resolution satellite images in near real-time have gained more popularity for natural disaster detection due to the unavailability and difficulty of acquiring frequent ground observation data over a wide region. In Sudan, the occurrence of drought events is a predominant natural disaster that causes substantial damages to crop production. Therefore, monitoring drought and measuring its impact on the agricultural sector remain major concerns of policymakers. The current study focused on assessing and analyzing drought characteristics based on two meteorological drought indices, namely the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Drought Severity Index (DSI), and inferred the impact of drought on sorghum productivity in Sudan from 2001 to 2011. To identify the wet and dry areas, the deviations of tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) precipitation products from the long-term mean from 2001 to 2011 were computed and mapped at a seasonal scale (July–October). Our findings indicated that the dry condition fluctuated over the whole of Sudan at various temporal and spatial scales. The DSI results showed that both the Kordofan and Darfur regions were affected by drought in the period 2001–2005, whereas most regions were affected by drought from 2008 to 2011. The spatial correlation between DSI, SPI-3, and TRMM precipitation products illustrated a significant positive correlation in agricultural lands and negative correlation in mountainous areas. The relationship between DSI and the Standardized variable of crop yield (St. Y) for sorghum yield was also investigated over two main agricultural regions (Central and Eastern regions) for the period 2001–2011, which revealed a good agreement between them, and a huge drop of sorghum yield also occurred in 2008–2011, corresponding to extreme drought indicated by DSI. The present study indicated that DSI can be used for agricultural drought monitoring and served as an alternative indicator for the estimation of crop yield over Sudan in some levels.
Agricultural Drought Detection with MODIS Based Vegetation Health Indices in Southeast Germany

Abstract:Droughts during the growing season are projected to increase in frequency and severity in Central Europe in the future. Thus, area-wide monitoring of agricultural drought in this region is becoming more and more important. In this context, it is essential to know where and when vegetation growth is primarily water-limited and whether remote sensing-based drought indices can detect agricultural drought in these areas. To answer these questions, we conducted a correlation analysis between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST) within the growing season from 2001 to 2020 in Bavaria (Germany) and investigated the relationship with land cover and altitude. In the second step, we applied the drought indices Temperature Condition Index (TCI), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), and Vegetation Health Index (VHI) to primarily water-limited areas and evaluated them with soil moisture and agricultural yield anomalies. We found that, especially in the summer months (July and August), on agricultural land and grassland and below 800 m, NDVI and LST are negatively correlated and thus, water is the primary limiting factor for vegetation growth here. Within these areas and periods, the TCI and VHI correlate strongly with soil moisture and agricultural yield anomalies, suggesting that both indices have the potential to detect agricultural drought in Bavaria.

Abstract:In most arid and semi-arid environments, groundwater is one of the precious resources threatened by water table decline and desiccation, thus it must be constantly monitored. Identifying the causes influencing the variations of the subsurface water level, such as meteorological drought, is one approach for monitoring these fluctuations. In the present study, the effect of two meteorological drought indices SPI and SPEI on the fluctuations of the underground water level was evaluated, as was their relationship with the drought index of the subsurface water level (SWI) using multivariate linear regression and M5 decision tree regression. After calculating climatic and hydrological drought indices in a 6-month time window for a long-term statistical period (1989–2018), the semi-deep aquifers of Golestan province, which is located in northern Iran, were considered as a research location for this purpose. The results demonstrated that the effect of meteorological drought does not immediately manifest in the changes of the subsurface water table and the hydrological drought index. By adding the meteorological drought index with a 6-month lag step, the average air temperature, and the total rainfall from the previous 6 months as new variables, the correlation with the SWI index increases, so that in the best-case scenario, the M5 decision tree model provides the best result in predicting the SWI index. The second half of the year yielded a coefficient of determination of 0.92 and an error value of RMSE = 0.27 for the SPEI index. Among the meteorological drought indices, the SPEI index, which is based on precipitation and evapotranspiration, created a stronger link with the SWI index, which highlights the significance of potential evapotranspiration. It is a warning that, as a result of global warming, subsurface water tables in this region may fall in the future.

Abstract:Abstract One of the adverse impacts of climate change is drought, and the complex nature of droughts makes them one of the most important climate hazards. Drought indices are generally used as a tool for monitoring changes in meteorological, hydrological, agricultural and economic conditions. In this study, we focused on meteorological drought events in the High Ziz river Basin, central High Atlas, Morocco. The application of drought index analysis is useful for drought assessment and to consider methods of adaptation and mitigation to deal with climate change. In order to analyze drought in the study area, we used two different approaches for addressing the change in climate and particularly in precipitation, i) to assess the climate variability and change over the year, and ii) to assess the change within the year timescale (monthly, seasonally and annually) from 1971 to 2017. In first approach, precipitation data were used in a long time scale e.g. annual and more than one-year period. For this purpose, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was considered to quantify the rainfall deficit for multiple timescales. For the second approach, trend analysis (using the Mann-Kendall (M-K) test) was applied to precipitation in different time scales within the year. The results showed that the study area has no significant trend in annual rainfall, but in terms of seasonal rainfall, the magnitude of rainfall during summer revealed a positive significant trend in three stations. A significant negative and positive trend in monthly rainfall was observed only in April and August, respectively.

Abstract:Eswatini, as the rest of southern Africa, is being frequented by drought over the last decade, and modelling experts are predicting that drought years will become more and severe. The expected increase in extreme climatic events makes the use of drought indices essential for drought monitoring and early warning. To enable Eswatini to better prepare, analyse and respond to drought, this study analysed the use of Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) for near-real-time drought monitoring through the development of a model for drought severity. Meteorological stations across all agro-ecological zones with data for the period 1986-2017 were selected for analysis. The SPI computation was achieved through DrinC software. Primary NDVI data sources were CHIRPS gridded rainfall dataset and the MODIS NDVI CMG data. Results of the 3-month SPI indicated that moderate droughts were experienced in 1990/1991, 2005/2006, 2011/2012, 2012/2013 and 2015/2016. The Highveld and Middleveld had the lowest drought occurrence percentage of 3.3%, whereas the likelihood of having a moderate, severe and extreme drought was higher in the Lowveld. The study determined a positive correlation between the SPI and the NDVI at 3-month time scale, and a value of <i>Y</i> (drought severity) greater than 0.54 indicated a significant dry spell and could be used as a drought trigger threshold for early warning. The combined use of NDVI and SPI was deemed capable of providing a near-real-time indicator for drought conditions allowing planners to provide timely information for drought preparedness, mitigation and response planning, thereby helping to lower the eventual drought relief costs, protect food security and reduce the humanitarian impact on the population.
