Abstract:Introduction: Much published research writing is dull and dry at best, impenetrable and off-putting at worst. This state of affairs both frustrates readers and impedes research uptake. Scientific conventions of objectivity and neutrality contribute to the problem, implying that 'good' research writing should have no discernible authorial 'voice'. Yet some research writers have a distinctive voice in their work that may contribute to their scholarly influence. In this study, we explore this notion of voice, examining what strong research writers aim for with their voice and what strategies they use. Methods: Using a combination of purposive, snowball and theoretical sampling, we recruited 21 scholars working in health professions education or adjacent health research fields, representing varied career stages, research paradigms and geographical locations. We interviewed participants about their approaches to writing and asked each to provide one to three illustrative publications. Iterative data collection and analysis followed constructivist grounded theory principles. We analysed interview transcripts thematically and examined publications for evidence of the writers' described approaches. Results: Participants shared goals of a voice that was clear and logical, and that engaged readers and held their attention. They accomplished these goals using approaches both conventional and unconventional. Conventional approaches included attention to coherence through signposting, symmetry and metacommentary. Unconventional approaches included using language that was evocative (metaphor, imagery), provocative (pointed critique), plainspoken ('non-academic' phrasing), playful (including humour) and lyrical (attending to cadence and sound). Unconventional elements were more prominent in non-standard genres (e.g. commentaries), but also appeared in empiric papers. Discussion: What readers interpret as 'voice' reflects strategic use of a repertoire of writing techniques. Conventional techniques, used expertly, can make for compelling reading, but strong writers also draw on unconventional strategies. A broadened writing repertoire might assist health professions education research writers in effectively communicating their work.
Editing a Woman's Voice

Abstract:Prior work shows that men and women speak with different levels of confidence, though it's often assumed that these differences are innate or are learned in early childhood. Using academic publishing as a setting, we find that language differences across male and female authors are initially negligible: in first drafts of academic manuscripts, men and women write with similar levels of uncertainty. However, when we trace those early drafts to their published versions, a substantial gender gap in linguistic uncertainty arises. That is, women increase their use of cautionary language through the publication process more than men. We show this increase in the linguistic gender gap varies substantially based on editor assignment. Specifically, our author-to-editor matched dataset allows us to estimate editor-specific fixed effects, capturing how specific editors impact the change in linguistic uncertainty for female authors relative to male authors (the editor's author-gender gap). Editors' author-gender gaps vary widely, and correlate with observable editor characteristics such as societal norms in their country-of-origin, their work history, and the year that they obtained their PhD. Overall, our study suggests that a woman's "voice" is partially shaped by external forces, and it highlights the critical role of editors in shaping how female academics communicate.

Abstract:I have been writing Editorials in this journal for 14 years now, the little fellows amounting to the amazing number of 112, if I calculated correctly. After having taken over the editorship in 2010, the original idea was to comment on something that was part of the respective issue, be it a general topic or a specific contribution. This soon gave way to the occasional ramification dealing with a spontaneous thought or experience—the report on our travels through Assynt, for instance.[1] An initial feeling of unease if something like this did belong into a scientific medical journal was attenuated by unsolicited positive and encouraging feedback by numerous readers. Over time, growing insight into the mechanisms of publishing and extended networking with editorial colleagues made me realize that the Editorial as such has been scientifically analyzed. Was I doing the right thing? A very comprehensive and insightful analysis was published by Peh and Ng in 2010.[2] They list the common purposes of an editorial: Personal message from the editor to journal readers. Commentary on a published article in the same issue. Concise review on a topic of current interest (not warranting a full invited review). Drawing readers' attention to very recent developments or innovations. Commentary on nonscientific topics, for example, health policy, economics, law, or ethics .[2] Their Summary very nicely puts it all in a nutshell[2]: Although originally a means to deliver the editor's message, editorials have evolved to fulfil various purposes. As there is typically a limited space in which to deliver its contents, the message contained in the editorial needs to be well thought out and concisely delivered. It should contain the correct sequence of the elements of critical argument, ideally supported by evidence, with a clear conclusion. The venerable British Journal of Anaesthesia gives sound advice on how to write an Editorial, focusing on its practice of invited ones accompanying and commenting papers published in the journal.[3] There I learnt that you can even win a Pulitzer Prize for such efforts.[4] The prevailing practice regarding the purpose of Editorials is definitely that of opinion pieces related to a current paper, but, as shown, there are others. Independent of their focus, the most critical point seems to be the lack of peer review, which may allow placement of ideas that otherwise would not have made it into the journal. In a healthy scientific community, this will not go unnoticed or uncommented and stir an open discussion.[5] [6] [7] A critical evaluation of any Editorial by the reader is essential. "Opinions," as one says today on social media, are after all "my own." Interestingly, this special genre of academic writing with a definitive potential to influence the community seems to be utilized only rather sporadically by most journals.[8] In her in-depth analysis trying to answer the question "How do editors use editorials to lead their journals?" Maria Plakhotnik states that " Editorials represent a platform for editors to directly communicate with their readers and shape a unique character of the journal ."[8] I could not agree more. Editorials are highly personal. No wonder that their authors may undergo scrutiny. Phyllis Noerager Stern was the Editor-in-Chief of Health Care for Women International from 1983 to 2001. She wrote distinctly idiosyncratic Editorials, which became the subject of a detailed analysis.[9] Aside from medical topics, she was very outspoken about cultural issues and women's rights. This earned her the title of a " Living Legend " of the American Academy of Nursing in 2008. Thomas describes her as " irreverent, droll, and even a bit risqué at times ."[9] "Sounds familiar," I thought when reading this characterization. Stern wrote about how it feels to break a rib,[10] or getting health care in Thailand,[11] gave advice on how to publish or edit medical papers,[12] [13] mourned the murder of her beloved car "Pearly May" by an SUV,[14] and vividly described her cultural experience during a sea cruise to Alaska.[15] The wording of the titles alone! Finally, it looked like I had found a soulmate. Trying to establish contact, I found out that, unfortunately, Phyllis Stern had died in 2014 at 88 years of age. Just by reading her editorials, however, you gain an impression of this Editor as a living person, and, in this case, of someone I would have loved to meet. Reflecting my own practice, this implies that readers of my Editorials who do not know me in person either would possibly like to do so, or would rather not touch me -Abstract Truncated-

Abstract:The concept of #ownvoices writing has gained traction in contemporary publishing as both a genre of reader interest and a focus for debates about authors' rights to write cross-culturally. This paper examines tensions the #ownvoices movement reveals between the commissioning, publishing, and critical reception of a book, using debate about Craig Silvey's Honeybee , an Australian novel focalized through a young trans protagonist but written by a straight male author. Drawing on the theory of recognition, it analyzes author and publisher media interviews, social media, and literary reviews in mainstream publications, which are given context through with selected interviews with Australian publishers. Misrepresentation and appropriation are concerns for many readers, while judgements about aesthetic quality vary. Structures within the book industries limit the economic representation of diverse creators which, in turn, has implications for the diversity of experience represented in young adult fiction and its literary quality.

Abstract:The concept of voice has long attracted the attention of teachers, but more recently has also been the focus of a growing body of research aiming to understand voice as self-representation in writing. Adopting a socio-cultural orientation to voice, studies have revealed much about how textual choices are used by readers to build images of text-authors; however, such research has been limited to contexts in which the author’s actual identity is unknown by the reader. Research has offered limited insight into how an author’s embodied self figures into readers’ voice construction, or how voice construction is connected to readers’ assessments of text—with or without knowledge of the author’s identity apart from the text. This article takes up these issues by exploring how readers’ exposure to videos of two second language (L2) student-authors influenced voice construction and evaluation of the students’ papers. Through primarily qualitative and intertextual analysis, the study concludes that voice construction, extra-textual identity, and assessment are related and interacting constructs, though these relationships are neither straightforward nor predictable. Methodological, pedagogical, and theoretical implications of this conclusion are discussed

Voice, tone, and the rhetoric of narrative communication

Abstract:The essay argues for a rhetorical view of narrative communication as an author’s deployment of particular resources in order to generate certain responses in readers, and then examines the nature and possible functions of voice as a resource. It defines voice as the synthesis of style (diction and syntax), tone (a speaker’s attitude toward an utterance) and values (ideological and ethical), and then turns to analyzing the role of voice—and more particularly, the role of tone—in narrative communication. With George V Higgins’s The Friends of Eddie Coyle as Exhibit A, the essay examines the functions of voice and tone in fictional dialogue, and with Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking as Exhibit B, it examines their role in nonfictional narration. The essay concludes with a call for further analyses of voice and tone, even as it cautions that their roles may be more or less important as we move from one narrative to another.

Abstract:What do you value most about your voice? As ethnomusicological studies of the voice expand, so must our understanding of what voice even means. Voice must entail more than just a sonic phenomenon, but must also relate to our ideology. By fusing an ethnomusicological and legal perspective, this article will explore the “right of publicity,” introduce the concept of the negative voice, and explain why Waits stands as the culmination of a gradual evolution of the right of publicity. These explorations can help us understand how musicians can protect their ideological, as well as their physical, voices.
Moderation Challenges in Voice-based Online Communities on Discord

Abstract:Online community moderators are on the front lines of combating problems like hate speech and harassment, but new modes of interaction can introduce unexpected challenges. In this paper, we consider moderation practices and challenges in the context of real-time, voice-based communication through 25 in-depth interviews with moderators on Discord. Our findings suggest that the affordances of voice-based online communities change what it means to moderate content and interactions. Not only are there new ways to break rules that moderators of text-based communities find unfamiliar, such as disruptive noise and voice raiding, but acquiring evidence of rule-breaking behaviors is also more difficult due to the ephemerality of real-time voice. While moderators have developed new moderation strategies, these strategies are limited and often based on hearsay and first impressions, resulting in problems ranging from unsuccessful moderation to false accusations. Based on these findings, we discuss how voice communication complicates current understandings and assumptions about moderation, and outline ways that platform designers and administrators can design technology to facilitate moderation.

Effects of Authorial Voice on Literary Reception in the United States

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the effects of authorial voice on literary reception in the United States. Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: The study indicate that the tone, style, and perspective of the author can shape readers' interpretations and emotional responses to a text. For example, a confident and authoritative voice may engender trust and engagement, while a more experimental or ambiguous voice might provoke curiosity and critical reflection. Furthermore, readers' familiarity with an author's voice, whether through previous works or cultural reputation, can impact their expectations and predispositions towards new material. Implications to Theory, Practice and Policy: Reader-response theory, narrative theory and reception theory may be used to anchor future studies on assessing effects of authorial voice on literary reception in the United States. Encourage authors to actively engage with readers to solicit feedback on narrative voice choices and their impact on reader interpretation and enjoyment of literary works. Advocate for policies and initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion in literature, ensuring that marginalized voices and perspectives are represented and celebrated in the literary landscape.

Abstract:Background: There is a lack of conceptual framework for how to develop more inclusive practices in the subfield of technical editing. Literature review: Some researchers have posited theories, like feminism and rhetorical theory, as ways to conceptualize technical editing. This piece extends that literature into social justice using Walton, Moore, and Jones's 3Ps heuristic of positionality, privilege, and power. Research questions: 1. How might technical editing pedagogy become more inclusive Methodology: We conduct a rhetorical analysis of the major academic works in technical editing, including books, textbooks, and academic articles, and compare them to an established framework for social justice in technical and professional communicationthe 3Ps heuristic. Results: We find that there are strong instrumentalist underpinnings to much of the current literature in technical editing, making the goal of technical editing linguistic conformity to American Standard English (ASE) at the expense of linguistic diversity. We offer a conceptual framework, the inclusive editing paradigm (IEP), to challenge that linguistic hegemony in technical editing and provide technical editors with theoretical and practical foundations for developing a more inclusive editing practice. Conclusions: More work needs to be done to shift technical editing in a more inclusive direction. We call on practitioners, academics, and users to contribute to this dialogue.

Psychoanalytic Dialogues

Abstract:The work of producing a peer-reviewed journal involves keeping on top of a whirlwind of moving parts. We recruit submissions, assign reviewers, shepherd writers through the process of revising their articles for publication, and invite discussants to engage dynamically with the authors. Curating issues allows us to stand back and witness the scope and breadth of current writing in psychoanalysis. It's important to us to represent the range and diversity of voices, emerging and established, within our field. Thumb through the major journals, new format magazines, and newsletters; listen to podcasts and view short format videos, and it will be clear that it is a very demanding task, as one of our readers recently put it, to "hold the center."
